I am here too and I think he is a very interesting and a brilliant commentator. Like Malcolm X he knew to absolutely distrust the white liberal as far as he could throw them. The hypocrisy with mr. Baldwin however is that he bemoans European society and culture from where he lived and was educated. Also, he lived a disordered life as a homosexual.

@@eileen1820 He did not live a "disordered" life. It completely baffles me how you could praise someone for eloquently eviscerating prejudice in all its forms, and then completely undermine everything you've said by making an equally pernitious prejudicial and ignorant comment about his sexuality.
Your attitude of "I like him, shame that he's gay though" reminds me of racists who would go around saying "I like him, shame he's a negro though." He doesn't have to conform to your notion of how a gay person should love, any more than a black person must conform to a white person's idea of how a black person should act.

An observation, and especially the pleasantly surprised tone in which Black intellectuals speak is usually offered, reveals that white people subscribes to a way of thinking that holds Black people are typically inarticulate. “Articulate” Blacks are therefore a welcome exception to the rule. Last time i checked, slavery didnt begin in the USA. In fact, slavery was very small in the USA compared to places like the Caribbean or Brazil. Robert Kennedy's prediction was close, very close, to what actually unfolded.
I haven't seen his original quote so I can't say for sure, but I suspect that Baldwin may be misinterpreting here. The projection that America might elect a Black president by the end of the 20th century may not have been about what blacks might be able to achieve in that time, but what whites might be able to.
I'm sure RFK recognized that there were plenty of of African Americans who were intelligent and well enough educated to take national leadership roles in his own day, so it seems to me he was commenting on how long it would take white America to recognize and reward the talent already in their midst.
