Thought this was the future but… drove the ionic 6 today , 600km range and charged to 80% in 18 mins . All the manufacturers are upping their game 😊

Excellent video and narration. Great questions. I'm actually amazed at the size of the center tank and that it doesn't seem to intrude into the rear passenger compartment that much from the picture shown. Unlike the Mirai which the rear center passenger has to really spread their legs out wide to sit there. BMW seems to have done a great job at packaging all the equipment needed for an FCEV.

As a driver of a Hyundai NEXO I was astonished about the consuption while the test drive. Done with my car I would see a consumption of about 0,8 kg/100 km H2 and so 1 kg/100 km less then the X5. The NEXO has a tank capacity of 6,33 kg H2 and a WLTP-distance of 666 km, the X5 6 kg and 504 km.
So I believe it is great that BMW now really works with the hydrogen technology. Because for bigger cars ist is a great technology! I like it in my Hyundai very much.
But it is a lot more than taking some fuel cell staks from Toyota, build them together and the car is ready. It is the absolut correct decission to bring the car as a techology test car and to learn now. I would say at the moment Toyota and Hyundai are with that technology in lead about more then five years of development.

The conversation touched on cabin conditioning with the battery. Not the issue of battery conditioning for range. 500km combined range in cold weather with lithium batteries degrades noticebly. The answer to the problem was not given.
But is it running on li-ion? The hydrogen supplies the continuous power

I like this technology, the only thing I don't understand is the use batteries as energy density is low and mining Lithium is a very polluting process, mind you on the disposition, etc.

This is a very interesting vehicle. Will the cars that are part of this limited series eventually be sold on the used car market to private consumers?
It's unclear. They said maybe towards the end of the decade when Neue Klasse cars as here
@@bmwblog I mean the cars like the one you actually drove. They will be delivered to car reviewers and VIP customers, as far as I understood. So when these people are done, where will the cars go?
They will likely go to BMW. Some countries dont have the homologation for the cars to be on the road without a BMW engineer in the car.

@@soc831 Don't feel bad, it's a common misconception that FCEVs are light. The hydrogen itself is. The iX5 holds 6kg or 13lbs of H2, but the tanks, fuelcell, hybrid battery as well as all the small systems to manage all of it, add up to a lot. The 700bar tanks alone are 300 lbs. The fuel cell is over 150 lbs. The hybrid battery is about 200lbs because it's a bigger 2.5kWh to give better acceleration vs something like a Mirai with a 1.25kWh, plus all the additional equipment and structures needed. It all adds up to be a few lbs heavier than a PHEV and a few lbs lighter than a BEV, but all within 100 lbs of each other.

500km WLTP on 6 kg, and 1,8 kg/100km realworld? I'm sorry, but that is terrible efficiency for an RWD. Scratch that. It's terrible for any type. That's equal to 33kWh per 100km, assuming 55 percent fuel cell efficiency. Other H2 cars can do over 100km per kilogram.
You also added together the kW power of the fuel cell and the motor. That makes no sense, fuel cell (or the small battery) is the source of power for the motor. You can't add these together.
I really hope people are not serious about the idea to import H2 from the middle east. Talk about replacing one dependency with another. The 24 percent of energy to transport the hydrogen is also optimistic, considering you have to either liquify it or have huge tanks for the transport. Another point was that you want to store the renewables into H2. Ok, but why are you using that as an argument againts batteries? Battery storage and BEVs themselves are a buffer for renewable energy. People are also unlikely to have an electrolyzer at home. With BEVs they can send their overproduction directly into the car.
I understand BMW hedging their bets but as long as over 95 percent of H2 is made from methane, let' s not call this a green transportation alternative.
why not add together the HP output? That's the total power output. In the print review, we broke down all the specs, by source also.
@@bmwblog The Fuel cell is the SOURCE of power for the motor. The power from the motor is what you have available as the driver. Your explanation in the video sounded as if you took the fuel cell power and added the power of the motor to get to 401hp. If the motor can indeed produce 401 hp (300kW) the rest of the power (300kW-175kW fuel cell = 125kW) would have to come from the tiny battery.
