- This is our review of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. The FCEV, short for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle, is BMW’s new bet on hydrogen-powered vehicles, but certainly not their first. The BMW Hydrogen car (iX5) made its debut in 2019 at the Frankfurt Auto Show and then, once again, two years later at the Munich car show.
BMW engineers have worked hard since to perfect the technology in the iX5 Hydrogen prototype and was now finally ready to be handed out to a selected number of journalists. And there is no better place to do so than at the BMW Testing Center in Arjeplog, Sweden. Located 55 kilometers from the Arctic Circle, the testing centers offers development engineers of the BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands perfect conditions for intensive and integrated work on new vehicle components and models.
The BMW iX5 Hydrogen has two carbon-fiber hydrogen tanks that store 6 kilograms of compressed hydrogen at a pressure of 700 bar.
Typically, this BMW hydrogen car makes about 125 kW/170 horsepower, however, the energy stored in a performance buffer battery can be used for short bursts of high-performance acceleration, delivering a maximum of 275 kW/374 horsepower. The power battery located at the rear axle can be recharged in coasting overruns and braking phases.
Speaking of “charging”, it takes about three to four minutes to fill up the hydrogen tanks, enough for a current estimated range of 300 miles (500 km).
Let's take a look at the BMW iX5 Hydrogen review!

Would you prefer a hydrogen-powered BMW or a battery-powered electric BMW?
Hydrogen-powered BMW
EV, I don’t wanna experience what oil is doing to us now. Hydrogen is another form of oil.
@@akme18 Why?
@@fancyIOP How is it another form of oil? Curious
Both are equally pointless in Canada. Until we invest in infrastructure, none of this matters
im so glad that bmw is not only following the mainstream and still believe and invest in hydrogen technology. one day they will be get big reward for their endurance!
Hopefully it pays off
Toyota, hundai, and Honda dont exist apparently
BMW should partner with JCB in hydrogen efforts🙌
Why?
Wish this was coming to the Midwest United States. Electric is cool but not feasible for those who live in rural areas or where we have 2-3 hours of driving between big cities. Fact that you fuel this like normal combustion vehicle would be a huge plus for our region.
Not for a while but hopefully a production series will follow.
Murat was here. TFS (Thanks For Sharing)
Make more fcev please!
Hopefully there will be more
Great!!!Good Review!!!
Glad you enjoyed it
🔥🔥🔥
I wonder if they could use the water and heat to power cooling AC in hot countries like Australia.
Interesting use case
As an experiment it’s great however I doubt that many countries will put in the charging infrastructure also the need for clean eco hydrogen.
I therefore don’t see a future for passenger cars. But for Trains, Shipping, heavy plant and possibly Aircraft I’m sure it has a great future.
Not sure if you understand how h2 is created.
Those industries could drive the charging infrastructure
@@bmwblog they can't though. It's enormously complex and capital intensive. Oil companies despite what the media suggests don't have that kind of cash.
@@cwx8 yes I do hydrogen mainly through Electrolysis. But Green Hydrogen is expensive. Blue cheaper.
@@garrycroft4215 not really. Electrolysis competes with blue on capital cost. Steam methane reforming will require carbon sequestration. Only blue hydrogen can produce at rates sufficient for pipeline transport. That's the issue.
Awesomeness 🙌🏿I may not be a Hydrogen fanboy because look at the prices of oil now, we don’t want to see another oil coming in the form of hydrogen but we appreciate the investment. I will however get a BMW EV in the near future when it’s on solid power batteries.
What makes you think batteries are any different? History repeats itself. Scientists are warning about the ecological impact of battery material extraction and the waste created by batteries. And we are ignoring them just like we did the warnings of global warming in the late 70s. Rich investors have tricked everyone yet again.
Get a Hydrogen Car. It's free fuel for 3 years.
@@jasonlewis460 sounds great but if I get solar system and a pure EV I can charge it “free forever” not limited to 3 years.
@@cwx8 I hear you, but I’ve seen a lot of companies coming up with solutions to battery wastes and also battery components. I mean 90% of the battery components can be recycled now, that 10% will also be looked at. I guess for now we will just have to wait and see how the market will pan out. Scientists are just the voices behind the data but the people are the actual buyers of those products.
@@fancyIOP I dunno where this 90% comes from. It must be by weight because it definitely isn't what you want which is cathode anode. I am working for a company looking to solve this exact problem.
BMW de iX5 Hydrogen excellent
It is
Is bmw ix5 hydrogen system lighter than bmw ix40?
Good question. Have not asked, but will soon have a chance.
I see, they can put Harmon Kardon in some non production Test car but not my 2022 $72k X5?
They likely just used whatever X5 was available. Not sure they even thought about it
6:00 what a messy conversation bit :D
Happens when it's not scripted
Informative, thank-you. UK only has 14 locations where you could recharge with Hydrogen. So, unless National Governments or the private sector of mainline Petrol/Diesel/Electric filling stations invest in such infastructure, this concept becoming practicable reality to use and buy such BMW's, is certainly a non-starter in the UK currently. So if going 'Green'. currently we have no-choice, only electric.
Even then you can't or at least you don't hope everyone goes electric at once. There's nowhere near the infrastructure needed.
Glad you enjoyed the review! This is a long game still. BMW says that only by 2030 we might see a full production run. Which means they are also waiting to see how the infrastructure develops over time.
I just wanna point out that this car is also "electric". FCEV stands for fuel cell electric vehicle. It's just the energy storage that differs.
@@SoundboundOfficial Exactly.
Well those 14 locations are more than there were ten years ago when it was about 3, mostly in southern England. Hydrogen will come soon, mark my words.
Where do I sign up
No sign ups yet. But we will learn more about the car in September-October.
Hydrogen vehicle or Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle. The hydrogen function as an energy storage in the form of gaseous chemical. The current hydrogen source is from natural gas reform, which is the current hydrogen source use in the industry for many years. However, now the hydrogen is being produce from renewable electricity, which is through electrolizers (Other discussion). That means, that the hydrogen can be designated as a "green hydrogen". Once in the vehicle, the green hydrogen is chemical and electrical change through a Fuel Cell into electrons (electricity) to run the electric motors. The only exhaust from the vehicle is water. As the vehicle is running, air (oxygen) comes in from the outside and combines with the used hydrogen molecules and releases only water. Thus, there is not any fossil exhaust at all from the vehicle. Only water comes out. However, the challenge the industry is having is the green hydrogen production cost, and the infrastructure development. As a result, the USA government is investing in the research and development of lower hydrogen cost production and infrastructure installations. The benefits: faster fueling time, high performance, no CO2 or methane, less weight, and around 350 miles of endurance. So, yes, i'll choose a hydrogen vehicle.
Plz just clear one thing ' is it like IC cars or foes it has all d instant tork like EVs'
We will talk about that in part 2 of the review since we drove and drifted the car! So please subscribe to the channel!
@@bmwblog okkk
It's an electric vehicle, just with different storage. It also has a small battery for bursts tho.
@@SoundboundOfficial 👍🙂
@@SoundboundOfficial Exactly.
What is price for this car?
No price yet. The car will be available in small units in 2023
BMW have just announced that it will be manufacturing hydrogen fuel cell cars by the end of 2022.
Yes. A small batch of X5s.
👏👏👏🍀✌️

It amazes me how those at the top of the industry don’t understand the business they are in. FCEV will never be able to beat BEV in the marketplace, BMW, Toyota and others playing with this tech are just wasting their money.
It's not like BMW is going all in on hydrogen. This is just an alternative to EVs.
Hydrogen for use in the vehicle is 4x as expensive as traditional gasoline. Couple that with lack of infrastructure to get refills and it's a hard pass for me. I also don't like the idea of not being able to quickly assess and repair issues on my own.
Today....maybe valid points. But most of these projects are for the future where all the things you mentioned might look different
Go look at a lithium strip mine and tell me EVs are globally sustainable.
The battery based electric car is almost as bad for enviroment and the humans as the petrol or diesel cars or even worse. So please switch completely to hydrogen cars.Congratulations and we keep our fingers crossed so your project will be a worldwide success.
Please BMW, stop wasting your time on this folly, And we love the 4 bmw cars in our family, 3 of which are electric.
20% loss in electrolysis, 20% loss in transmission/transportation, 30% loss in conversion back to electric.
VS 5-10% loss from a grid source to your battery, much of which will be renewable when charged at night.
This is economic madness.
Question! How many hydrogen road tankers are required to deliver the energy density of a diesel tanker!
18.
Finally, and erudite answer. THANK YOU Steve
How many lithium strip mines will it take to poison the world?
After nearly 2 years youve prepared this video, hydrogen is even far than reality, as EV now common choice. İt sounds good to fill up hydrogen in 4 minutes but there is no auch stations and the ones opened in some countries closed one by one. İmagine you xould generate hydrogen in your house and you could charge EV also in your House, you would much nire wnergy for hydrogen option to have same mileage because hydrogen generation and the fuel cell efdicincy is not good. İn the future you might expect more efficient batteries with new technology but compressing h2 is already at its limits, and it will not grow more mileage. Still insee some research for trucks and planes, but for cars at least with current infrastructure and technology winner is already EV
Go look at a lithium strip mine and tell me how EVs are globally sustainable.
@@anon-yw4wd actually i am interested, I am not sure i know "strip" but I know brine mines requires lots of water, electrolysis of H2 also requires water, but let me know if there is more into it. I am also happy to see that other materials are starting to be used instead of lithium, but their energy density is lower.
Anyone who thinks EVs are awesome should go look at a lithium strip mine. 💀💀💀
