@@kidale4159 I know that ruud knows what’s going on it’s just that he definitely was not thinking that Alcaraz was going to set up the world famous “2 1” but he knew that alcaraz was trying to push him wide and get an advantageous inside out forehand
One thing that, for me, separates top level pros from "really good but not quite there" players is how Carlos sets up a play that would give him the DTL winner most times but, when Ruud still reaches it, he's able to keep pushing forward, first with the volley and then with the overhead. I've seen many top >30 players try a great, perfectly executed, play and then run out of ideas when its opponents returns the ball once or twice more
It's a much more difficult shot. It doesn't look like it, but it is, for multiple reasons (changing trajectory of the ball, changing spin, the net is higher, you need to let the ball come back further on the backhand side, increasing error rate and reducing power) you are also hitting towards the court because you are so wide making it also less effective in that situation
Ruud was really stuck there cause once he was way out on the backhand side, technically he could go down the line but with Alcaraz’s speed, he could get to it and hit a cross court forehand and the point would be over even more quickly
I was always giving this guy a thumbs down and making comments about how ridiculous he was until someone pointed out that he's just being funny I just didn't get it but now it makes sense! The 2-1 that is funny!
The mistake is Ruud’s. He could easily hit straight down the line on the right of Alcaraz and make A move. But Ruud stayed with his corner to corner line and paid the price.
Not to mention the cripple of a defensive lob that he threw up. Alcazar's volley wasn't very good either and Ruud had all the time in the world to go for a down the line pass.
If John Madden did commentary for tennis. “See, when the forehand goes over the net, lands in the court & the other guy can’t return it before it bounces twice…that’s a touchdown!”
Upgrade to forehand .. I also have seen players running around the forehand doing waaay to little and getting nailed with a fairly plain down the line. It's threading a needle. You could accomplish the same a backhand.
What wouldEvert who could undo any ground stroke rally pattern do when steffi made the same ploy in everts last win over Graf ( who employed this strategy which worked against Evert in later matches due to everts age and lower mobility execution ) do ? Evert would do one of three things 1. Hit drop shot either down the line or middle of the court bring a reluctant Graf to net if she could reach it then lob over grafs head . 2. Because down the line is a lower percentage shot (higher part of the net, shorter court) and if he doesn't hit a great shot 1) he'll be out of position, and 2) Alcaraz will be able to take a big cut on his forehand, 3) Alcaraz will be able to hit crosscourt, which is the higher percentage shot (low part of the net, longer court), and 4) because Ruud is out of position, he'll be on the dead run trying to chase that ball down.

okay but why doesn't ruud just hit it down court or are carlos's balls too hard to hit them where he wants?
Probably the latter
Because it's riskier shot as the net is higher on the sides + Carlos' groundstrokes are hard hits.

why does Ruud always hit it right back to alcaraz instead of going to the other corner to make him move?
He’s pushing him further in that direction so opponent is too far once he hits to other side. The guy just explained it
