I'm 78 and watched this when I was about five. Fell in love with the pipes and so at 15 (underage) I joined the Toronto Scottish Regiment. After three years with the Tor Scots I joined the regular army for a 31 year career. I think this movie was the pivotal moment that set my future in place. To this day I still enjoy the pipes & drums.
I have not seen a real western like this in decades! This truly is a standards maker. Plenty of stars, plenty of Indians, plenty of action, AND PLENTY OF SUPERB SCRIPT WRITING AND INTEGRITY. NO movies made today can compare to this one. It has a backbone!
This is my first time watching this film. It's truly a classic in my opinion. One of the most heartbreaking scenes though is when the dog is trying to lead Chris to his lost family. That's honestly heartbreaking. But the way Chris deals with the issue compared to Abby. Is masterful the way he tries to tell her don't look and tells her to go back. As he's digging the grave. Is just what a true man to do. We don't see stuff like that anymore in movies. My favorite part though is when she's crying after seeing the bodies and holding the dog. She basically says that it's hopeless. But Chris like a true man comes back with basically that it's not hopeless. The storytelling the characters all of this is something that Hollywood today can't possibly do. At least this is all my opinion. This is now up there in my top five favorite movies. Thank you for uploading this God bless you all.

This film reminded me of another of my favourite films "Captain Blood" with Errol Flynn. another of my favourite actors. Gary Cooper, Paulette Goddard - makes for a very good combination. In my opinion, Coop was in the top five male actors in their hey day and there isn't anyone nowadays can come remotely close.
Yes, Gary Cooper, Artie Murphy, James Stewart, and a leading man Randolph Scott later found to be gay. There's so many Greats could go on Gary Grant, Alan Ladd, Rock Hudson etc etc.....
Enjoyed this film, great photography. Different, made me feel as if I was in that era. Loved the end as the drummers marched in. A by gone era...wonderful.
Mary Bentley you've spoken very well and mature it always gladdens my heart when people acknowledge good things 😊 How are you doing Mary Bentley hope you're fine and also in good health condition?
Watched it twice Those Scottish horn's blowing at the end was amazing Paulette Goddardand gary cooper Everything about the characters just Noble and I like that the movie is adventurous too especially the chasing scene and just packed with a lot of intrigue
Just watched this movie at random. I love classic movies and this one was no exception. I also saw 3 scenes from this movie, that were placed in other movies. Classic!
I seen this movie 7 times in the movie theaters, when I was 7 years old. When they cut the movie they cut out the most important part,of it. It was the green dress. It showed Paulette Goddard when she was dirty, and than showed her cleaned up and beautiful in that gorgeous dress. It really was a very significant part of the movie. So sorry they cut it out!
I love Gary Cooper during a particular time of his career. Back in the ‘30s when he first started making movies, most of his roles were on the ‘goofy’ side. But as he became seasoned, his looks were more endearing & his acting matured. He still held a hidden talent for humor but it became a controlled trait he used to his benefit. I found him increasingly handsome ~ my attraction for his acting ‘grew on me’ ~ he no longer acted in parts that portrayed him as a weakling or a big tall dummy. It’s no wonder Gary Cooper became one of the best actors of his time & was soo widely sought after during the ‘40s when the motion picture industry made the best films/movies ever! (~ in my opinion). He eventually lost his sensuous attractiveness, but he never lost his integrity for acting with distinction & talent, and oftentimes a touch of humor!
Actually, Cooper started acting in the 1920s. He had a small, showy part in the very first winner of the Academy Awards for Best Picture, "Wings" in 1927. He was the flyer who offered Richard Arlen and Buddy Rogers some chocolate before going on a flying mission.
I agree w most of what u said ..except...ever watch Devil & The Deep " W Tallulah Bankhead ..you'd change your mind about the 30's....,& Cowboy & The Lady" ..he is very handsome & manly in both....he s great in this one too as u say the 40's so awesome in Hollywood...but I don't think he EVER list his sensuality....or manliness or anything..watch " Love in the Afternoon " w Audrey Hepburn 25 yrs younger..he's hot in that &his very last movie too.....a Total hunk no matter what age.......💖💖💖💖👌👌👌
@@karenhill3970 Love in the Afternoon is my all time GC favorite. I loved his character and Audrey Hepburn's. Maurice Chevalier too. Some of it was cheesy, but most old movies are that way. Never a better ending when he swooped her into the train!😍 I have watched it over and over. Better than Audrey's Breakfast at Tiffany's or Charade. Didn't like either one. Give me Coop!
"Get your things Abby." -"I haven't anything." "You got two feet, get up in them." Sounds so much like something a motivational speaker would say. Witty stuff too.
@2:23:13 Garth (Howard Da Silva), "She's comming with me." Capt. Holden (Gary Cooper), "Where you're going, you're going alone." How I love that kind of talk; simply to the point, not said with profanity and stated in a normal tone of voice - the effect is quite menacing, but it is not the kind of dialog that comes out of Hollywood anymore and probably never will again.
Well said carol Stefan it always gladdens my heart when people acknowledge good things 😊 How are you doing Carol Stefan hope you're fine and also in good health condition?

STILL such a Gooood Cecil DeMille "Epic" portrayal.... even after all these decades!! Wonderful Gary Cooper in yet Another Classic and Ever-Memorable Role. The scene with Seneca Chief Guyasuta (Boris Karloff) with The Compass and the fired-off gunpowder is A Slice of Hollywood History!!! Above-n-beyond the intended Purely (box office) Dramatic Elements of the film, then the larger sequential aspects of "The French and Indian War" are fairly consistent with documented American history pre-independence..... in what was then the Wild Wild West (of the Alleghanies / Appalachians)!! THX for this "clean" film copy....!!!! :-)

Saksri Miller I love Gary Cooper and Cary Grant! (I even gave my adorable dog the name of Cooper! Couldn’t name him Gary tho...My uncle already has that name )
@ Saksri Miller Just saw one of my fav GARY COOPER movies with CAROL LOMBARD - he's a cow hand she's a millionaire socialite. Made 1930. It's 02:30:00 hours cut to 1:30:00. They destroyed it. Don't even watch A FAREWELL TO ARMS.
Made in 1947, Cecil B. DeMille : Producer and Director; Staring Paulette Goddard and William Holden with other well known players . How the west was won - this is how I learnt my American History. - from epic western films and comics. Great way of learning.
Even though they may look dated now,. Things such as it overhead camera shots while fleeing from the indiana's, the recreation look of the gentlemen with Washington,in the manner of contemporary painting s of the time... worth a closer look
Ahh. And here it is. R. F. from the peanut gallery has spoken. I bet you live here? Instead of taking a stand against America by commenting about an old movie storyline. Why don't you let kids watch it then turn it into a lesson? Or better yet, move to another country and really make a stand.
Thank you this good movie. It certainly reveals the tragedy of slavery of all kinds. Women were very vulnerable with none to turn to for help if they were bought by a cruel person. The black slave no options either. I was sad when the black man begged Gary Cooper if he could go with him. But Gary said he couldn't because he was owned by his brother.
Double-dealing and double-crossing hail from indenture contracts. The crossing referred to X signatures by illiterates. Double-dealing meant -- straight out of this plot -- an SOB double-indentured a victim. BTW, the normal term for any indenture was only seven-years -- because of the Biblical injunction against longer terms of debt -- and indenture was deemed a labor debt. The typical solution for an indentured white person -- think Irish -- was to lose your accent and run away -- beyond the reach of the law. No small amount of the frontier was settled by such souls. British colonial slavery law was actually based on the indentured. (Irish) However, with Africans, payoffs to the courts, corruption, turned Black 'indentures' into perpetual indentures -- true life-long slaves. This devolution was entirely due to graft, corruption, and the language + cultural barrier. (Africans weren't Christian way, way back then. They'd been stolen from their homes -- by other Africans -- and then sold on -- at the coast -- to European SOBs -- rather like the sex traffickers we see right now. Stealing people was just too profitable to stop. Epstein comes to mind.)
This movie is filled with familiar faces & names and I missed it as a kid? That Paulette Goddard was breath-taking. Boris Karloff in a Gary Cooper film? That's great casting.
The action in this movie takes place in 1760s. When the assembled men were discussing whether the land beyond the Alleghenies was safe for settlers, Ward Bond stood up and said that the land is replete with coal and iron which, he said, can be smelted into steel. However, steel wasn't invented until the 1850's by British inventor, Henry Bessemer.
Steel usage has been dated back to Roman times, possibly even earlier. What Bessemer did was make a manufacturing process that could mass produce it inexpensively.
Hmmm . . . steel has been around for centuries. what Mr. Bessemer invented was the 'Open Hearth' furnace, making possible the production of steel in large quantities.
@@thepandeslar8062 No, he invented his 'Bessemer Converter' -- Carnegie adopted the open hearth furnace after gaining success with Bessemer's design. The open hearth design -- of the 19th Century -- used locally produced bricks and masons. Whereas the Bessemer Converter required high quality iron and steel. Today's basic oxygen furnaces actually hail back to Bessemer's design. So you can see that the industry has bounced back and forth as to what works best.
The film ends with a quote from Ben Franklin, "Where liberty dwells, that is my country." To which Thomas Paine replied, "Where it does not, that is mine." There weren't many that could one up a quote from Ben. Thomas Paine then traveled to France to assist in their revolution.
And was nearly guillotined for doing so - by the revolutionaries. He was an impossible man, financially stupid (the 2 go together - just like Karl Marx) and was never going to be happy. Benjamin Franklin was a pedophile and a malignant father - as well as being astute.
And 77 years later, this still ranks as one of the most watchable movies ever!
Couldn’t agree MORE
Cooper made over $3 million in today's money and Paulette made over a million--The movie lost money because Demille went over budget

Great classic movie, wonderful story, great acting , direction . This movie would have won many academy awards and Oscar awards
it didnt win anything. was not taken seriously when it was new.

Hello there,
How are you doing ?
Such a great movie. Two of my all time favorite actors.
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this wonderful movie. It was a pleasure to watch.
Excellent quality in these westerns so far, thank you for having them for us to watch
En español, gracias
Thanks too Mary Bobbitt for acknowledging good thing 😊
How are you doing Mary Bobbitt hope you're fine and also in good health condition?
What a wonderful movie in all senses, filming, acting , everyting.
“Better than you? She must have been crazy”--Wonderful quote. 1:47:30 I watch this movie just for that alone. It’s a great movie.
EthnoEuropean's CountriesAreBeingInvaded I know, but it’s a great line anyway, and she says it so well.
I feel what you mean ..beautiful
Gary Cooper was great, there are no americans like him anymore.
My favourite part though is the part that starts at 1:52:58
@EthnoEuropean's CountriesAreBeingInvaded Why not? I could.
watch this movie when i was very young , great movie thank for uploading
Gary Cooper, Paulette Goddard - makes for a very good combination. In my opinion, Coop was in the top five male actors in their hey day and there isn't anyone nowadays can come remotely close.
I agree. They don't make leading men like Cooper anymore. If they even existed, they would be told to bulk up and play superheroes.
Yes, Gary Cooper, Artie Murphy, James Stewart, and a leading man Randolph Scott later found to be gay. There's so many Greats could go on Gary Grant, Alan Ladd, Rock Hudson etc etc.....
So true
Also John Wayne, Yul Brynner and many others.
@@bessieking3797 what has "gay" to do with it ?
Enjoyed this film, great photography. Different, made me feel as if I was in that era. Loved the end as the drummers marched in. A by gone era...wonderful.
Wonderful writing tyvm
I am 70 and first time l see this. Very good..
Boris Karloff as an Indian.....wonders never cease. Great movie, great stars.
Karloff was of Anglo-Indian descent which is why he was so often an attractive choice for ethnic roles at the time.
Check out "Tap Roots" on RUclips, another movie c Boris in an ethnic role."
He also played a Choctaw Indian in "Tap Roots".
Mary Bentley you've spoken very well and mature it always gladdens my heart when people acknowledge good things 😊

Those Scottish horn's blowing at the end was amazing
Paulette Goddardand gary cooper
Everything about the characters just Noble and I like that the movie is adventurous too especially the chasing scene and just packed with a lot of intrigue
" marriage saves you from slavery , I can't say the same for you , sir " . great line .

I have to say I truly enjoyed this movie so thanks so much for sharing it . :)

"Sergeant York" made use of his obvious skill with a rifle. Cooper handled the Springfield if were it were made of balsam wood.
Great movie; historical in so many ways. Thanks for sharing.
What a great classic western movie! Thanks for sharing.
"Get your things Abby."
-"I haven't anything."
"You got two feet, get up in them."
Sounds so much like something a motivational speaker would say. Witty stuff too.
This is the very best, most authentic colonial movie ever made.
This is one of my favorites!!! Thank you!
M. W. Wilson not with the satanist commies in charge
DaSilva made such a good baddie. Contrast to his fun role as B. Franklin in "1776" (1972).
Right!! Because He ( Gary Cooper) was a real MAN........ PERIOD
To Mm Wilson
Another great movie with the best actor Gary Cooper.

I just love classic movies. This is one of my copper movies of all time
I loved this movie. It had a "Cinderella-twist" to it. Excellent movie.
Events which took place in my back yard
If this generation only had a clue of the courage it took and the thousands of lives lost to make this country and our Constitution, freedom and liberty for all. Great movie!
And a lot of murdered Indians...you forgot that part.
Very good movie very very good locations very good acting of all actors actresses very good story and Direction
She went through so much, her clothes got torn, but her makeup always stayed so beautiful. 😊
Continuity - In the waterfall she was wearing flesh coloured shoes until the leather wraps showed up.
What a beautiful woman she was. I swear women were better looking in the 30s - 40s and 50s.

I've never seen a DeMille film I didn't like. I first saw"Unconquered" as a little fellow. The scene where Holden comes to the rescue of Ft.Pitt started me liking the music of Bagpipes & Drums. I still do! An Excellent movie! Not historically accurate; but that's Hollywood.💀

Hollywood has gone to Heck.
Made in 1947, Cecil B. DeMille : Producer and Director; Staring Paulette Goddard and William Holden with other well known players . How the west was won - this is how I learnt my American History. - from epic western films and comics. Great way of learning.
Well Done , Nice efforts to allow watching full movie. Thanks .
Even though they may look dated now,. Things such as it overhead camera shots while fleeing from the indiana's, the recreation look of the gentlemen with Washington,in the manner of contemporary painting s of the time... worth a closer look
Now these are movie's!!! You could sit with your whole family together
I saw this in on 35 mm film last night in a theater in Los Angeles. Yes you could sit with your entire family.
Oh yes let the kids see what racists, and mysogenes Americans were!!!
Ahh. And here it is. R. F. from the peanut gallery has spoken.
I bet you live here? Instead of taking a stand against America by commenting about an old movie storyline. Why don't you let kids watch it then turn it into a lesson? Or better yet, move to another country and really make a stand.
@@wheretonow3106 lucky for me, I live far far away from the US. If you do turn it into a lesson then why not... But most people won't unfortunately.

Great movie, thanks for sharing.

Steel production and implementation can be traced back almost 4,000 years to the start of the iron age.
Hmmm . . . steel has been around for centuries.
What a beautiful movie
Thank you
terrific movie. thank you for showing.
The film ends with a quote from Ben Franklin, "Where liberty dwells, that is my country."
To which Thomas Paine replied, "Where it does not, that is mine."
There weren't many that could one up a quote from Ben.
Thomas Paine then traveled to France to assist in their revolution.
1 for 2 ain’t bad
And was nearly guillotined for doing so - by the revolutionaries. He was an impossible man, financially stupid (the 2 go together - just like Karl Marx) and was never going to be happy. Benjamin Franklin was a pedophile and a malignant father - as well as being astute.
man , this is a great film , right from the git go it's a blockbuster to the last minute !
