  • Béla Fleck, the world's preeminent banjo player, and Edmar Castañeda, a peerless master of the Colombian harp, share more than a penchant to pluck magic out of strings. Both musicians are keen listeners with lightning reflexes and the ability to pounce on any digression. They're both alchemists of style, unbound by the rules of genre. And each has a way of making virtuosity feel generous, disarming any look-at-me heroics with a spirit of welcome.
They had never played together before this performance at the 2019 Big Ears Festival. The concert, at Saint John's Cathedral in Knoxville, Tenn., features an equal portion of compositions by Fleck and Castañeda, as well as a flamenco-charged classic by Brazilian composer Jacob do Bandolim. The notes rain in cascades, or flow like rivulets, but always in service of bright communion.
This performance was recorded at St. John's Cathedral in Knoxville, Tenn., on July 31, 2019.
    SET LIST
    0:12 - "No Fear"
8:58 - "Throw Down Your Heart"
    19:54 - "For Jaco"
    28:48 - "Bamako"
    37:05 - "Santa Morena"
    MUSICIANS
    Béla Fleck (banjo)
    Edmar Castañeda (harp)
*Correction to the credits: Kimani Oletu is an additional videographer for this recording.

Quote "they had never played together before this performance..." Uh, what... I seems like they have been playing together for ages. The music is rather amazing, start to finish...

Just heard Fleck, Castaneda, and Antonio Sanchez at the Blue Note in NYC last week. It was the most extraordinary sound world created by these three masters playing their own wonderful compositions throughout. It was so off the charts great, I went back two nights later....a revelation....again!

Simplemente maravilloso.

I saw Edmar with his own group more10 years ago in Westport CT, a very intimate setting. Thanks to the sound engineer for this top shelf performance, I was transported back in time before several forks in my personal road. Bravo Bela and Edmar!

Such a feast for the ears, every time I listen to this!!! My god. So wish I’d been there in person. Btw, hate to judge the audience, but the quiet, polite applause was kind of anger-making. But could be they were just gobsmacked and stunned, just like I was the first time I watched this. On this Earth, it doesn’t get any better than Bela and Edmar jamming together

Sooo gooood! I hear shades of Malian kora stylings in Edmar's playing. I wonder if it's intentional or if it's just natural way to play both instruments that way.

This is one of those cases where I find something and immediately think I'll love it (I know me). And I don't. Another one is Esperanza Spalding. It's interesting how some virtuous playing and finest music sometimes just don't connect emotionally.
