Edmar Castaneda: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Edmar Castaneda is the sort of musician who isn't afraid to challenge the established order. He's carving out a place for himself in Latin jazz on an instrument you don't often hear in his chosen genre: the Colombian harp. He's adapted intricate traditional fingerpicking techniques to play jazz melodies along with the Afro-Cuban tumbao (bass line). As you can see and hear for yourself in this Tiny Desk Concert, he can switch between rural Colombian dance music and jazz with a twist of his wrist. Literally.
His musical vision is so invigorating that he's gaining fans like NEA Jazz Master Paquito D'Rivera, with whom Castaneda has performed. His Web site shows him constantly on the road as a guest artist with other forward thinkers, or with his latest touring trio, which consists of Castaneda, a drummer and a trombonist.
Castaneda recently parked himself behind Bob Boilen's desk and crafted a transporting mix of tradition and improvisation. Chances are, you've never heard anything like it. Видеоклипы
Oh wow...WOW! I’m a harpist, playing for many years, and this young man is a genius, something out of this world, how he adds so many new and different sounds to the harp with such mastery and passion. There is no match. I’m in awe. I hope the world in its entirety hears this young man play. And that smile of his and humility is priceless :)
I was wondering if all of that is just normal techniques for harpist, but i guess not entirely. He is amazing. I discovered him because he has a live album with Hiromi, you should listen to it if you havent. Beautiful.
Daniel Omar Ríos Talamantes I feel that Live in Montreal is my favorite album of all time. If I could listen to one album for the rest of my life, it’d be that one.
Joropo is a folkloric music from Colombia and Venezuela where the harp is the main instrument check it to see another great harpist
The Latin American technique is an entirely different branch of harp playing, you can see they use their nails and plays standing with a thinner harp.
I saw him perform 3 years ago live in Atlanta and I literally cried the whole show. His music touched my heart so much, it was crazy. Hiromi was playing piano as well and I'm a huge fan of hers too. I listen to their album often when I'm driving and it always brings a lovely tear to my eyes.
¡Viva Colombia!
dilo.... Cubano Nuyorquino aqui
I was 12 years old the first time I listened to this concert. I'm 21 now, and I find myself coming back periodically both for the nostalgic effect I get from his melodies and unceasing amazement of his mastery.
Anthony David I feel like even if he doesn’t have too many fans, the ones that he does, he really helps heal our soul.
That's so beautiful!
Same here!! Love this
It's like 2 People Playing At Once. The grace and machine precision is out of this World. ❤ He's playing a Whole concert All at once.
Sadly the masses like good looks, fluff and canned music. Not actual talent.
You should invite him again, he is spectacular.
200% AGREE
That's so beautiful!
Im only 30 seconds in and I agree
His skill at the harp is unbelievable. That was the coolest tiny desk I've ever seen
This guy works so hard and obviously loves what he's doing. This is fantastic music from an incredible musician.
Absolutely incredible. Perfect technique, and execution, and unrivaled in originality to top it all off. Where's the "love" button?
I watch this several times a day to remind me that there is still beautiful people out there.
Orgullo Colombiano!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i cried listening to this. its freaking amaging !!
2:37 hit me in the emotions
The soul remembers. It reminded of the dimension of perfection.
This is the best video I have ever seen. I almost didn't watch it because, well, it's the harp. My error in judgment was clear after five seconds.
Un gran músico para el mundo y para Colombia !!!
así es!!
soy colombiano, y esto es sencillamente hermoso.
Es espectacular.
Es colombiano pero también es de otro mundo. Increíble.
I'm Colombian, I love harp from joropo and today I wrote "colombian harp" in the search of some classics. I am now at the edge of absolute happiness. Gracias desde el fondo de mi corazón, gracias por tomar de tu tiempo para endulzar nuestros días!
This Master is like a hummingbird so beatifull to see and so hard to fotograph always and always Tiny Desk capture the sound and how it is plaid but this Maestro is to fast and intricate to capture at plain sight so wonderful to see thanks again tiny desk for making me discover yet again another Master Gracias Mil
Holy f&@k! Insane genius. Latin American harpists have blown my mind for decades: Mexico, Columbia, Paraguay… this guy is right up there with the very best of them. Virtuosic as any guitarist or pianist virtuoso. What human fingers can do!!!
A tear from beautifully played heaven music.
So much passion in his playing. Incredible.
This clip has a couple of years and he's still magnanimus (standing speechless, in absense of a greater adjective). We just had him opening our yearly Mastercard Jazz Fest in Puerto Rico 2023 (reopening after Covid times), and I'm literally holding my urge to cry because I couldn't assist to go watch him.
Truly a genius. You don't have to be hispanic, or colombian or even a passionate music fan to just stand in awe with Edmar. But for us who have our roots in Latinamerica, can't help but loose all sense of gravity when we listen to him and swell with pride at what he's achieved with his music and the harp. Truly remarkable.
new dimension of harp playing
it was never new, that's how the harp is played in Colombia and Venezuela
They play jazz traditionally? Can we get some names?
It is not Jazz is joropo and musica llanera
Yeah, I thought so.
He plays jazz, too;don't be so "ethnically guarded". Amplifique sus horizontes,y no seas tan estrecho de de concepto estetico, por dios. +ebiop
Amazing. If not for NPR Music (and COVID-19) I would not have known Edmar Castaneda. Never thought a harp could be played like this. Super COOL. Music is boundless.
Total command of the light tension South American harp. Those blues notes take the lever harp to a new level. No limits. But beyond the technique, he is channeling the kind of creative power that reminds me of my first listen to John Coltrane back in the late 60s.
The heavenly bass in all this heavenly music❣️
Me llego hasta el fondo de mi alma , de mis raizes y sangre. Saludos desde Chile!
Holy criminy! And all on a diatonic harp! Magnificent!
He is a genuine ARTIST! I am falling into the music!
Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. Mind. Blown.
I'm watching this 7 years later and I'm still crying by minute 3...
Edmar tiene duende!!! Suena Flamenco!! Impresionante!
Wow!!! What an amazing experience watching him play!!! Like damn dude!
I can hear some influences from the argentinian litoral music. Very beautiful!
This dude is to the harp what Bela is to the banjo. A virtuoso. One of the best, solo jazz performances I've personally ever heard. Brilliant. The man "has his way" with the music, he dominates it - as huge as it is. Bravo!
I totally agree!
Going to see him and Bèla play a concert tomorrow afternoon
Absolutely magical.
quarantine brought me here and that's been one of the only good things of these past few months
Yes. It’s been tough and this music from passionate artists are the only things keeping me going. Keep striving and I hope you are doing well.
Meanwhile, in 2019, Edmar Castaneda -- referred by some as "the Pat Metheny of the Harp" is performing and recording with former Pat Metheny Group member Gregoire Maret on Harmonica. I'm excited to see them perform together at the GroundUP Music Festival 2020 :-)
WOW.. You talent is beyond belief...!!!
RUclips needs to make this video impossible to dislike. There needs to be one big and fat LIKE button at the top and that's it.
Only one word comes to mind to describe what I just saw and heard....."impossible"......"
"I M P O S S I B L E".....!!!!!!
This guy is beyond incredible....and is as humble as the quiet neighbor next door. I am ashamed to say I have never ever heard of him.
Nothing is impossible through music
🎶💜 13:22 … mind blown 🤯… I felt that! This was so inspiring to witness. What a phenomenally gifted soul. Perfect example of the many ‘voices’ of an instrument and the variety of flavors a musician can create from it. Simply divine 🎶💜
