Oh wow...WOW! I’m a harpist, playing for many years, and this young man is a genius, something out of this world, how he adds so many new and different sounds to the harp with such mastery and passion. There is no match. I’m in awe. I hope the world in its entirety hears this young man play. And that smile of his and humility is priceless :)
I was wondering if all of that is just normal techniques for harpist, but i guess not entirely. He is amazing. I discovered him because he has a live album with Hiromi, you should listen to it if you havent. Beautiful.
Daniel Omar Ríos Talamantes I feel that Live in Montreal is my favorite album of all time. If I could listen to one album for the rest of my life, it’d be that one.
I saw him perform 3 years ago live in Atlanta and I literally cried the whole show. His music touched my heart so much, it was crazy. Hiromi was playing piano as well and I'm a huge fan of hers too. I listen to their album often when I'm driving and it always brings a lovely tear to my eyes.
I was 12 years old the first time I listened to this concert. I'm 21 now, and I find myself coming back periodically both for the nostalgic effect I get from his melodies and unceasing amazement of his mastery.
I'm Colombian, I love harp from joropo and today I wrote "colombian harp" in the search of some classics. I am now at the edge of absolute happiness. Gracias desde el fondo de mi corazón, gracias por tomar de tu tiempo para endulzar nuestros días!
Holy f&@k! Insane genius. Latin American harpists have blown my mind for decades: Mexico, Columbia, Paraguay… this guy is right up there with the very best of them. Virtuosic as any guitarist or pianist virtuoso. What human fingers can do!!!
This clip has a couple of years and he's still magnanimus (standing speechless, in absense of a greater adjective). We just had him opening our yearly Mastercard Jazz Fest in Puerto Rico 2023 (reopening after Covid times), and I'm literally holding my urge to cry because I couldn't assist to go watch him. Truly a genius. You don't have to be hispanic, or colombian or even a passionate music fan to just stand in awe with Edmar. But for us who have our roots in Latinamerica, can't help but loose all sense of gravity when we listen to him and swell with pride at what he's achieved with his music and the harp. Truly remarkable.
This Master is like a hummingbird so beatifull to see and so hard to fotograph always and always Tiny Desk capture the sound and how it is plaid but this Maestro is to fast and intricate to capture at plain sight so wonderful to see thanks again tiny desk for making me discover yet again another Master Gracias Mil
Amazing. If not for NPR Music (and COVID-19) I would not have known Edmar Castaneda. Never thought a harp could be played like this. Super COOL. Music is boundless.
This dude is to the harp what Bela is to the banjo. A virtuoso. One of the best, solo jazz performances I've personally ever heard. Brilliant. The man "has his way" with the music, he dominates it - as huge as it is. Bravo!
🎶💜 13:22 … mind blown 🤯… I felt that! This was so inspiring to witness. What a phenomenally gifted soul. Perfect example of the many ‘voices’ of an instrument and the variety of flavors a musician can create from it. Simply divine 🎶💜
Only one word comes to mind to describe what I just saw and heard....."impossible"......" "I M P O S S I B L E".....!!!!!! This guy is beyond incredible....and is as humble as the quiet neighbor next door. I am ashamed to say I have never ever heard of him.
Total command of the light tension South American harp. Those blues notes take the lever harp to a new level. No limits. But beyond the technique, he is channeling the kind of creative power that reminds me of my first listen to John Coltrane back in the late 60s.
What a feast of prodigious harp music , full of passion and amazing musicianship . He makes this harp HUGE and POWERFUL . Felicidades Edmar . Tu eres un regalo rico para la humanidad . Muchisimas gracias . George Lewis, Sr.
he is so beyond impossible amazing, super incredible - soul and might of expression splendour all the way, so inspired by this sweetheart ! thank you for the post !
As someone who grew up with the harp, this is amazing. He is truly gifted and has explored the depths of one of the most beautiful instruments on earth.
A man tear was shed. This is intelligent composition and he's using some gorgeous phrasing on top of that. All I can say is thank you NPR for posting this and thank you Edmar for writing such beautiful music. It has been appreciated.
I've had the luck of interview him in NYC, a couple of years ago, he is just an amazing artist and even greater human being. cheers, Edmar, you rock brother!
This is one of the most energizing and beautiful performances that I have seen. Castaneda, you are an inspiration with so much palpable rhythm and surprise and history! Eso!
The music of Faso is an inexhaustible source of sweetness. It allows us to plunge deep inside ourselves and at the same time resonate with our fellow man, Yé Lassina Coulibaly❤❤❤❤❤❤

Joropo is a folkloric music from Colombia and Venezuela where the harp is the main instrument check it to see another great harpist
The Latin American technique is an entirely different branch of harp playing, you can see they use their nails and plays standing with a thinner harp.
¡Viva Colombia!

Anthony David I feel like even if he doesn’t have too many fans, the ones that he does, he really helps heal our soul.
That's so beautiful!
Same here!! Love this
It's like 2 People Playing At Once. The grace and machine precision is out of this World. ❤ He's playing a Whole concert All at once.
Sadly the masses like good looks, fluff and canned music. Not actual talent.
I'm Colombian, I love harp from joropo and today I wrote "colombian harp" in the search of some classics. I am now at the edge of absolute happiness. Gracias desde el fondo de mi corazón, gracias por tomar de tu tiempo para endulzar nuestros días!

2:37 hit me in the emotions
The soul remembers. It reminded of the dimension of perfection.
Amazing. If not for NPR Music (and COVID-19) I would not have known Edmar Castaneda. Never thought a harp could be played like this. Super COOL. Music is boundless.
This is the best video I have ever seen. I almost didn't watch it because, well, it's the harp. My error in judgment was clear after five seconds.
Orgullo Colombiano!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So much passion in his playing. Incredible.
This dude is to the harp what Bela is to the banjo. A virtuoso. One of the best, solo jazz performances I've personally ever heard. Brilliant. The man "has his way" with the music, he dominates it - as huge as it is. Bravo!
I totally agree!
Going to see him and Bèla play a concert tomorrow afternoon
new dimension of harp playing
it was never new, that's how the harp is played in Colombia and Venezuela
They play jazz traditionally? Can we get some names?
It is not Jazz is joropo and musica llanera
Yeah, I thought so.
He plays jazz, too;don't be so "ethnically guarded". Amplifique sus horizontes,y no seas tan estrecho de de concepto estetico, por dios. +ebiop
RUclips needs to make this video impossible to dislike. There needs to be one big and fat LIKE button at the top and that's it.
Un gran músico para el mundo y para Colombia !!!

A tear from beautifully played heaven music.
Holy criminy! And all on a diatonic harp! Magnificent!
🎶💜 13:22 … mind blown 🤯… I felt that! This was so inspiring to witness. What a phenomenally gifted soul. Perfect example of the many ‘voices’ of an instrument and the variety of flavors a musician can create from it. Simply divine 🎶💜

He is a genuine ARTIST! I am falling into the music!
Me llego hasta el fondo de mi alma , de mis raizes y sangre. Saludos desde Chile!
People hate harp because they don't know what harp can really do. THIS is what harp can really do. Bravo Edmar Castaneda!
Edmar is a mad genius.
Wow!!! What an amazing experience watching him play!!! Like damn dude!
Not afraid to Praise God - Bless this man! May his gift bring the world some peace.
Edmar tiene duende!!! Suena Flamenco!! Impresionante!
look how he takes his hand that he uses for the bass, and winds it, as if he can physically pull and stretch the notes, simply amazing
