This music would most definitely raise someone from a dead state into eternal glory, and if my body was lying there in state, I would probably rise up and congratulate the organist.
For those interested, the organ builders Nicholsons have removed all the pipework from this instrument and the pipes have been melted down. The exception are the case pipes which date from the 17th century. So the Gloucester Cathedral organ shown here no longer exists. As such this performance is a useful historical record of the instrument before its destruction. The brand new organ is due to be completed in 2026.
This clip sounds amazing whenever I listen to the Hymns it reminds me of flipping the pages and giving the Hymnbook for my Grandfather Percry Samuel Edwards, to sing BASS at Church of South INDIA HOLY CROSS CHURCH, I was 14yers when I did that, whenever it was required on a Sunday morning to listen to my Grandfathers lovely voice that time it was Amazing, May your soul rest in peace, Papa, And also God bless although who gave their life for Church Music and Ministry,
Used to love that hymn about the saints of God, particularly the line "and some were eaten by a fierce wild beast, and there's not any reason, no not one, why I shouldn't be one too." Always fancied being a fierce wild beast.
I'm sitting in Waverly, Iowa, loving the sound of this magnificent instrument. But, Richard, you need to sit up straight. I'm getting a backache watching you play - and a glimpse of heaven, listening to your musical genius. Thank you.
Richard McVeigh has done a serive to the Christian church for performing these beautiful sacred hymns and anthem for the church. We love it! Hallelejah!
The best VC so far. Fantastic organist, wonderful Cathedral with acoustics and reverb out of this world, and a fantastic English organ! For me, it doesn't get any better! Thank you Richard.
Thanks for playing the Star-Spangled Banner. It heartening to hear a little love from our English-speaking brothers in England. I loved the entire concert.
Greetings from over in the USA. My name is Adam, and I’m the SubDean for the Potomac Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. I’d love to hear “King of Glory, King of Peace” General Seminary.
I've spent my whole life growing up listening to the sound of the organ of Gloucester Cathedral from a wide range of organists over the decades such as David Briggs, Andrew Nethsinga, Robert Houssart, Mark Lee, Ashley Grote, and more recently to the present day with Adrian Partington and Jonathan Hope, whom I've had the pleasure to know personally and professionally. I myself had such a unique thrill being able to play on it myself in recent times, even with having lessons with Adrian only just last Friday to name such an occurrence. I could tell from Richard's expression just how much it felt for him to be there in person over a week ago to be up close and personal with such an iconic instrument in our country. This really was an icing on the cake to have both Jonathan and Richard working together again as well as the BIS community to have the this organ added to Richard's collection. I can think of a few extra churches here in our county I think you'll love to play and add to your digital organ library if you're interested Richard!
There are lots of places I’d love to go, and I’m trying to record at least one pipe per month. There are lots of beautiful churches around with good organs 😊
@@beautyinsound There's St. Catharine's which is just up the road from me in Gloucester, as well as St. Barnabas on Stroud Road which has a fantastic acoustic. If you get the chance, definitely make a visit to Tewkesbury Abbey.
And I am hearing our National Anthem from none other than Gloucester MA. What a treat. I wish we had a cathedral and organ like that here. Thanks Richard!
Thank you Richard. You’ve made my All Saints Day with my favourite hymns of the day. I really appreciate your tempos and choices of registration. That fine organ in that wonderful building is spellbinding.
Excellent. Thank you very much indeed. And for once, at last, the chat regulars seemed to be paying attention to what you were doing, Such a relief from their usual way of infantilizing themselves with their toe-curlingly embarrassing talk of "throwing cake around in the naughty corner", etc. Week by week it makes me sad to see adults behaving like this. I hope they can snap out of it and focus on the music, the instruments, the playing, and the hymns. Thank you again.
Thank you Richard for the Star Spangled Banner. Beautiful colors on the organ. Some side information. There are a total of 4 verses to the Star Spangled Banner. Google has all the verses. Once again thank you for the uplifting BIS.
Great service once again Richard, really liked the 'At the Lamb's high feast' and the Bach BWV 545! There's great music for this Feast - looking forward to Advent music coming around again in a few weeks too!
Richard: You are a fantastic organist! And you are the first world-class organist I have ever noted who is able to play in your socked feet sans organ shoes. Your feet must be highly developed to withstand the strain and pressure of the pedals without the buffer of the shoe.
You're very kind! I'm not sure about 'world-class'.... more like 'world-infamous'! I'm happy to be able to play in both shoes and socks, and I do honestly believe that it improves one's ability to naturally feel their way around the pedalboard.
This is so wonderful. In August of 2020 I was scheduled to go along with our choir from Trinity Cathedral Little Rock, AR (USA) and spend a week at Glochester Cathedral. Of course that didn’t happen but thank you so much for a small glimpse of what we missed!
I remember "processing" to this at Canterbury Cathedral on one of my first visits there. We walked from the quire seating to the site of the martyrdom of St Thomas. I'd never "processed" before. When I hear this played on a cathedral organ it reminds me of that occasion.
An absolutely marvelous VC!!! And it’s only on rewatching that one sometimes catches the Easter eggs : there really IS a big comfy couch in the organ loft!!!! What an amazing sound. Bravo!!!
Thanks again for a magnificent series at Gloucester - it was truly beautiful to wake up to such an incredible instrument on a Monday morning! The levels were spot on, and captured the amazing sounds and colours. NB: more requests from Nala please, they have amazing taste :)
Well played Richard and one of my favourites “Jerusalem” was fantastic 👍 your many stop changes always amaze me as yu rarely fluff a note whilst doing it👍 I haven’t seen many other organists so dexterous?? Excellent choice of many of my best loved hymns👍thank you 👍the filming & editing certainly hit a new high 🙏🏼🙏🏼
For some people, a car or a bicycle or a basketball becomes like part of themselves and obviously, Richard and his organ are symbiotic! So great to be on the receiving end of the music, too.
Coming in late again - sorry! But, where to start with such a fine selection of hymns on such a stunning instrument? OK, Thornbury - it is one of those tunes which used to addle my brain in D & I always played it in C. (E#s just don't compute here.) Anyway, our chamber choir was singing at Canterbury Cathedral & our D.o.M. asked if I would play. Cue many hours of practice & it is now under the fingers for ever. Really strange experience though as the choir & congregation processed up to the extreme east end during the hymn & seemed to be further behind on each verse - getting to the final bars, stopping & hearing them two whole beats later was fun! I had to follow some advice I heard years ago & "ignore the congregation or you will never get home for lunch!" Thanks again Richard & Caroline (and Hugo, of course).
Thank you very much for your service to the world and to followers of the Lord around the world. Hearing you play makes me yearn for the day of the Lords return and the great song and praise we shall all sing together before the Father under the Chief Cantor, Jesus Christ inspired by the Spirit himself. . . until that point, however, the question of editions will remain unresolved 😄. Which edition did you use for the Bach Prelude and Fugue in C? I am unsatisfied with mine...
It's interesting hearing English hymns as an American Baptist organist lol. We typically play All Hail The Power of Jesus' Name to the tune "Coronation" in G major
Wow, I enjoyed your playing and interactions very much and the sounds of that cathedral. Must go and visit it as its only 2 and a half hours from Bognor. I attend the Chichester cathedral concerts and I had the privilege of once playing the pipe organ there. (My very first time ever playing a pipe organ. Different from my Johannus organ). I noticed a delay in sound as you pressed the keys, so that's different. Looking forward to some more organ music from you. Thank You.
@@beautyinsound Cheers Richard. We are so lucky to have such fine cathedrals in the UK. When I hear a professional play it inspires me to brush of the dust, open the roll cover and have fun playing. Look forward to your RUclips posts.
Marvelous instrument and performance--including the cathedral itself: what a pairing! Did I hear at least a three, maybe a four second reverb from the building itself?
When the sound comes out unmodified at the end guess its the stops taken out but not sure bc I dont know the specs of this particular instrument, but I digress, its just one big mess of sounds in the most terrific way.
Hi all! There is one thing I don’t understand about RUclips. Can the commercials be put between songs/organ solos? I get into whatever Richard is playing then a commercial interrupts the beauty and Richards master ship of the organ. I am in central United States.
Strange - there shouldn’t ever be an advert in the middle of a piece! I have to put them at various points throughout the video to help fund the creation of more similar videos, but I always put them at relevant points.
@@beautyinsound Hi Richard, was having the same issue with my viewing as well - think YT went a bit potato :( Also, massive thanks for Salzburg - such a magnificent sound, and masterful performance
Okay I am confused, over here they have been telling us lately that the tune to the Star Spangled Banner was actually an old English drinking tune called "Ode to Anacreon" or something like that. Is it actually a hymn tune before that and they just got it wrong? Or was it a case of the folk tune being adapted into a hymn and then into our song?
10:02 feels like the music is moving through your body. Masterful.
A great powerful instrument, J.S.Bach (BWV 545) would be impressed about the sound, and the organists mastership.
This music would most definitely raise someone from a dead state into eternal glory, and if my body was lying there in state, I would probably rise up and congratulate the organist.
“All hail the power of Jesus’ name“ was a sheer delight and act of worship. Thank you, Richard! To God be the glory!!
For those interested, the organ builders Nicholsons have removed all the pipework from this instrument and the pipes have been melted down.
