Love everything about the truck, I had a 2 door Blazer (non ZR2) and the front diff would make a banging sound. Seeing all those pieces from the front diff dissembled makes it easy to show how fragile that disconnect system is. I wanted to manually lock it in, but I could have had a problem with that shift sleeve/coupler thing. I love that you deburred everything in the cast iron diff, I wouldn't be able to resist either. Setting up the diff, I always thought that the in/lbs torque wrench was to check for problems, I thought the main thing you wanted to do is set the pinion depth with the crush sleeve and then check that the rotating force is within spec..

    • @Guillotines_For_Globalists

Push button does nothing, no sounds, the bellow doesnt move.
Questions are, what parts do I check out mainly?
Obviously the vacume lines (I definitely know there cracked and bad) then the bellow (its looks alright)..
Maybe you know what's typically wrong because I know this is a common problem.
I feel like I should hear a relay clicking when I hit the button.
Possibly the actuater or button its self? Is there anything else?

For the full size GM trucks they make an aluminum slug to replace the 4wd actuator to always keep the front axle live. This is particularly useful in the earlier OBS trucks that use a thermal actuator and you have to wait forever for your front axle to engage. It's called an on demand conversion and it's available for order at every parts store, a little spendy compared to the conventional actuator though.

How much power do you expect to put to the front drive? I bet you put way too much and I can't wait to see it. Paint it now, paint and rust remover are not getting cheaper.

Can't stress enough about the 1 ton idler upgrade and replacing the steering shaft rag joint with a u joint... that stock idler ain't gonna handle what your doing

Who else was watching this while working on a project in the garage?
I'm still trouble shooting an ill running condition with my 72 SS 454 Chevelle. Like a dummy, I let it sit for nearly a decade. Quadrajet is off... hoping it's something simple. (Accelerator pump, stuck metering rod, etc)

All s10's with 4wd and a 5speed from 98-2004 came with a cast iron front diff and an 8.5 rear diff.

One of my first times at Numidia with my '93 4.3 5-speed 4x4 Sonoma, the 2nd guy I went up against was Andy Jensen when he just got his blue C6. I actually tree'd and 60'd him by starting out in 4wd and shifting it to 2wd on the 1-2 shift. Then I saw tail lights for the rest of it. My '87 WO2 did better. Made my own RPO V75 "liqiud tire chain for my hardtop LS1 4th gen. That actually worked, 1.7 60's on junk 17" snow tires. Be cool to do one on an AWD.

@@macattack1392 Just search for it. It's a 1970 RPO code. You can probably patent it again with a mod and get wealthy. I know at least 100 more if you want to listen?

Needle bearings suck. Bushings are superior for longevity. Just run a little extra diff lube to keep things moving! Recommended for Toyota front clamshell diffs.

Nothing wrong with doing it right while you're in there. Only thing that I would have done is pressure wash it before tearing it down. I hate working in a nasty space.

Larry, always love your content! Miss seeing you on the Sunday morning show you used to host. Quick question; is a rebuild of the diff or 'recondition'?.not trolling or trying to split hairs. Just curious how one would differentiate the two terms? As always, enjoy your content!

To me, I consider it a rebuild if it gets all new bearings and seals like I did, because that’s replacing all the wear items, but that’s just me.

My 1st vehicle was an 89 s10, then 87s10blazer, then 97 gmc jimmy. All 2 wheel & stock motors.

Cant do anything to my DD. Its lame but been great to me for yrs & got super cheap. 13 elantra got for $7.5k in 2017 with 34k on it. Clean title, 1 owner. Thats what trade in value was & thats all they wanted. So paid up & ut was mine.

Since you have the ability to get to all the frame, you should throw some surface shields on it. You will most likely get s couple years out of it assuming it's applied correctly
