@@bf5175 We Brits like puns, because we find playing with language fun. The more groan-provoking the pun the better we like it, that's the whole point. I don't think US speakers really do think of language or even humour the way we do, e.g., one joke here is 'there is nothing the British like so much as a joke they know really well'. If you don't 'get' that, you just don't 'get' us. ( don't blame you at all, under a restrained surface we can be a bit weird- and there is no reason to expect we should always understand each other just because we broadly speak the same language, our culture is very different from yours, I know I have been there.)
We really like using language creatively- we do, I think, a lot more literature at school than over in the US. And in some parts of the UK we are more creative with it than others, Lancashire being one, which is why a lot of our best comedians come from t/here. We are especially creative with insults, which can be used as a term of endearment to friends when the same word would be an insult to someone else.
