MKBHD knows about tech, thats why he didnt request an sd slot or a headphone jack. those are useless features on a phone that only people who dont know about storage solutions and audio equipment want, the casual consumer of technology. which is fine, there are plenty cheap phones that offer those features. sd cards are completely irrelevant in the face of portable storage devices like ssds, especially portable NVME drives, and a headphone jack in a smartphone is pointless if the DAC inside the phone is shitty. 99% of even flagships have a less than decent DAC, because its obviously not something 99% of people even know anything about, or even exists, so it doesnt matter. people who actually care about listening to music with good audio will use a dedicated device for it with a good DAC and amplifiers. everyone else can just use wireless earbuds, like MKBHD does. ALSO, they sell them for like 30 bucks now or less, theres literally less than no point in phones having audio jacks anymore. plus, you can either get a usb-c pair of earbuds, or an adapter to usb-c for regular wired earbuds.

5:25 Even if 6.1-inch phones might have a smaller market share than 6.7-inch ones, there's literally no budget or midrange compact phone available right now (at least in India). if no one else wants to fill the gap, why not jump in and make a small, affordable phone, especially when people are demanding for it?
A smaller screen compromises on literally everything people look for in a phone just to be slightly easier to hold.. Clearly the people who want a smaller phone are fairly vocal minority but they don't actually have the numbers or the will to buy smaller phones at a large scale for it to be worth it for a company.
The fact is that none of the things MKBHD specified were from Nothing, yet Nothing didn’t take it personally or let ego get in the way and made this video happily
This phone would cost $1300 retail. Minimum. $500 is just the bill of off the shelf materials. That's usually only half of the cost, sometimes less. Add 30% cut for the company and this is an expensive phone.
The crazy thing about this, at this quoted figure, using my own low guess (emphasis on low) of a phone like this being sold at $1200 full price, $800 on sale; they would only need to sell between 33,622 to 78,450 units to recoup all their costs, which sounds so attainable (right??).
They did ignore several factors too like how they talked about the fact that factories don't trust newer companies leading to higher costs and also stuff like marketing and advertising was completely ignored. It's not really as ez as it looks
Marketing, advertising, distribution, contracts with networks and other retailers, international distribution and tariffs, and various taxes per device and on total profits. Failed units, stolen units and broken units on arrival needing free replacement, warranty program supporting the phone for free repairs and replacement, ongoing staff costs for the support length of the phone. This was purely how much the baseline to develop and get a single example handset from idea to physically existing.
Mkbhd wanted the Apple processors and the android os of google pixel with the cameras of google pixel for photos and iPhone for videos once in a podcast.
And it will be good if you can introduce a super AI feature in the phone. If you can add some features like introducing cyber punk model things to the recorded video, like insta 360 ace pro 2 trying to do

Battery: 6000mAh It would be kinda weird having a lot of cameras but with a design like Xiaomi 14 Ultra it could be great, I love to use all of the cameras when taking my photos and I use zoom a lot when travelling or watching an event, since I also play a lot recently, having a bigger screen with 144hz is perfect (for me) to have a good gameplay also with competitive games.

I thought they'd at least touch on the marketing and distribution as well. People think a device can just magically teleport from the parts store to the factory and then into their hands with an at-cost price lol, the manufacturing will be the cheapest part. Cost per unit will depend on the scale though. *Things I can think: - making commercials - buying TV spots - buying billboard ads - tarifs for international retail - sponsorships, brand ambassadors - keeping social media active around current products Strangely, in the past it felt like only a couple of companies would innovate and the others would copy (saving cost in R&D) but nowadays interesting things come from any company lol, even if rare
@@filbao8113 camera tech in Chinese brands has been more interesting for example (pop-up camera & other form factors, collabs with camera companies for better features etc), everything Nothing is doing, extra folding devices, gaming phone tech. It was also Xiaomi that first did the edge-to-edge screen phones that are now standard. Many of these aren't exactly new but they're in the latest era of Android development (before ai anyway).
I imagine it'll have something to do with removing every single component from the motherboard and attaching/soldering it onto the new one. Plus the chip/RAM/Memory is probably affixed to the motherboard, so it'll probably be easier just to source a brand new motherboard with all of that already attached. I imagine that's where the cost is coming from. Same issue with laptops.
@@TheMightyHams Based on my experience, the reason why I think it's so expensive to replace a logic board at official tech support for these devices is because it costs them more money to actually fix them, simple as that. Replacing a logic board is far easier (needs techs with lower skill levels = cheaper labor), and it's faster than having a motherboard diagnosed and fixed by a more experienced tech (again, they don't need those if they just replace them). Technically, it might bring some more peace of mind, given that the device leaves with a whole new board. I'm sure the fact that they have to build extra logic boards that instead of going for whole devices, they're spares for warranty repairs (which they don't get paid for) plays a role. And they'd rather you just buy a new phone. lol I've worked as an electronics repair tech, at a shop that was doing official warranty repairs for a big tool supplier in Europe. For walk-in customers, we'd diagnose and do board repair, for them, 90% of repairs were whole board swaps.
What an amazing phone it's gonna be, but I was expecting to see like 120W fast charge rather than the one you guys used. Just make it perfect at once 🤷
Mkbhd dreamed way too small. Dream phone should be as follows -6000mah (I'd prefer even bigger but for most people it'll be enough) -Snapdragon 8 elite -S25U display with TOF sensor (3d face scanning) -Dual speakers (big and equal size top and bottom), I don't care if it takes up some space in the front of the phone. Allow for 2.5mm/3mm top and bottom to dedicate for front facing speakers. This has the benefit of protecting the screen from drops too. You can also fit the front facing camera and TOF sensor there too instead of using a hole punch. No hole punches. Just clear uninterrupted display with speakers top and bottom. -Headphone jack -Microsd slot + dual SIM -1 inch sensor for main camera (using Vivo software), same sensor used for ultrawide, another big sensor for the telephoto. -Camera button that doubles as an alert slider so I can switch phone to silent/sound when I slide it and when I press it functions as a shortcut/camera button -removable back cover where I can easily swap out batteries and easily customise my phone similar to lg G4 where I can have leather if I want or plastic. You can add metal options and glass options too. -pass through charging -big vapour chamber -16gb ram DDR(whatever is highest I think we're on 7) -1TB storage of your fastest UFS -large under display fingerprint sensor (having both face ID and fingerprint at the same time is perfect for me because sometimes I wear a mask at work and sometimes I wear gloves. It's good to have both it makes my life easier) -satellite connectivity for SOS calls and texts. -upgraded radios for better signals. If someone made a phone like the above, I'd be happy to purchase it for £2000. I wouldn't even need to upgrade the bloody thing ever again.
@sarkasticc custom software ideally based on the pixel experience but with a better functionality on top. I love Niagara launcher, I would have that as the main launcher. 5:25 Even if 6.1-inch phones might have a smaller market share than 6.7-inch ones, there's literally no budget or midrange compact phone available right now (at least in India). if no one else wants to fill the gap, why not jump in and make a small, affordable phone, especially when people are demanding for it?
Nah there's moto edge 50 neo compact n budget friendly

A smaller screen compromises on literally everything people look for in a phone just to be slightly easier to hold..
Clearly the people who want a smaller phone are fairly vocal minority but they don't actually have the numbers or the will to buy smaller phones at a large scale for it to be worth it for a company.
The fact is that none of the things MKBHD specified were from Nothing, yet Nothing didn’t take it personally or let ego get in the way and made this video happily
Clearly they care

Kinda agree with you on this , Soft launching the 3 .
This phone would cost $1300 retail. Minimum. $500 is just the bill of off the shelf materials. That's usually only half of the cost, sometimes less. Add 30% cut for the company and this is an expensive phone.
Nothing is like redbull but in mobile phones
Ha ha..one comment which i thought of commenting
Red Bull has you convinced lmao
I'm very confused! Please explain! 😅
This company channel doesn't feel like a company channel
Mkbhd wanted the Apple processors and the android os of google pixel with the cameras of google pixel for photos and iPhone for videos once in a podcast.

SoC: Snapdragon 8 Elite
Memory: 16GB RAM and 512/1TB memory.
Screen: 6.5 to 6.7 inch QHD 144HZ Oled
Camera: 1 inch main camera, 50MP 3X Zoom, 50MP 10X Zoom, 50MP Ultra-wide, 16MP front camera with auto focus.
Battery: 6000mAh
It would be kinda weird having a lot of cameras but with a design like Xiaomi 14 Ultra it could be great, I love to use all of the cameras when taking my photos and I use zoom a lot when travelling or watching an event, since I also play a lot recently, having a bigger screen with 144hz is perfect (for me) to have a good gameplay also with competitive games.

Mkbhd has not been in touch with smartphones in quite some time, his team writes the scripts and tests the devices, he clearly missed out on more than a few things but its his dream phone I guess he dreams small 😂
I thought they'd at least touch on the marketing and distribution as well. People think a device can just magically teleport from the parts store to the factory and then into their hands with an at-cost price lol, the manufacturing will be the cheapest part. Cost per unit will depend on the scale though.
*Things I can think:
- making commercials
- buying TV spots
- buying billboard ads
- tarifs for international retail
- sponsorships, brand ambassadors
- keeping social media active around current products
Strangely, in the past it felt like only a couple of companies would innovate and the others would copy (saving cost in R&D) but nowadays interesting things come from any company lol, even if rare

@@filbao8113 camera tech in Chinese brands has been more interesting for example (pop-up camera & other form factors, collabs with camera companies for better features etc), everything Nothing is doing, extra folding devices, gaming phone tech. Mother board cost $15 here. But if you go to get your Mother board changed. 90% of phone cost
If it's already designed, tested, and ready to mass produce, sure. But all the pre-launch costs don't come for free
And they'd rather you just buy a new phone. lol
I've worked as an electronics repair tech, at a shop that was doing official warranty repairs for a big tool supplier in Europe. For walk-in customers, we'd diagnose and do board repair, for them, 90% of repairs were whole board swaps.
The transparency on those prices is respectable
What an amazing phone it's gonna be, but I was expecting to see like 120W fast charge rather than the one you guys used. Just make it perfect at once 🤷
Exactly 😂
Mkbhd dreamed way too small.
Dream phone should be as follows
-6000mah (I'd prefer even bigger but for most people it'll be enough)
-Snapdragon 8 elite
-S25U display with TOF sensor (3d face scanning)
-Dual speakers (big and equal size top and bottom), I don't care if it takes up some space in the front of the phone.
-Headphone jack
-Microsd slot + dual SIM
-1 inch sensor for main camera (using Vivo software), same sensor used for ultrawide, another big sensor for the telephoto.
-Camera button that doubles as an alert slider so I can switch phone to silent/sound when I slide it and when I press it functions as a shortcut/camera button
-removable back cover where I can easily swap out batteries and easily customise my phone similar to lg G4 where I can have leather if I want or plastic. You can add metal options and glass options too.
-pass through charging
-big vapour chamber
-16gb ram DDR(whatever is highest I think we're on 7)
-1TB storage of your fastest UFS
-large under display fingerprint sensor (having both face ID and fingerprint at the same time is perfect for me because sometimes I wear a mask at work and sometimes I wear gloves. It's good to have both it makes my life easier)
-satellite connectivity for SOS calls and texts.
-upgraded radios for better signals.
If someone made a phone like the above, I'd be happy to purchase it for £2000. I wouldn't even need to upgrade the bloody thing ever again.

I used to get the big phone because it was the only one with all the features, since that’s not the case anymore I can happily use something smaller. To be clear I’m not talking about iPhone mini smaller - that’s too small for me. More like base model or non-max pro.
iPhone tested this theory with the iPhone Mini and it totally failed in sales, but it's really cool they tried. I'm surprised he wants a 6.1in phone... It'd prob need to be 6.5 to compromise with what most people want in order to be successful.
