  • Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard talks about the artists and songs that made him who he is, from "Dreamweaver," through Seattle's exciting early 80's underground scene, the bands that undeniably changed his life to some of the unexpected artists he listens to right now (and where he and Eddie Vedder diverge). He also talks about what has kept the core members of Pearl Jam together for so long and how singer Eddie Vedder still constantly surprises him.

Two totally different different genres. And the end of the day, you can’t deny stone’s catalog of writing credits and his impact on music Mac basically being on the forefront of the Seattle scene with Green River and Mother Love Bone.
They created a wave they changed music, seemingly overnight.
Now, you want to talk EVH and RANDY and Zakk Wylde? Ok. But you can’t compare any 3 of those guys i just mentioned with Clapton or John Mayer.

What's especially interesting and cool is the fact that Stone grew up privileged. There aren't many individuals that have that kind of privileged background plus enormous personal success and remain as down-to-earth, likeable, and decent as Stone. He represents the best of America, whereas the Kardashians and Trump represent the worst.

@@colico14 That's a PNW thing. You don't see a lot of bling in Seattle, especially for the amount of money in the city, It's more an old money town, where people are more about blending in, and not being pretentious. Not to say there aren't a segment that do it, but you are far more likely to see a Tesla or a Subaru in a wealthy neighbourhood, than an Italian sports car. That kind of runs from Vancouver BC, down to Portland, and even as far as San Jose, although Silicon Valley has brought out the worst in some people in the Bay Area. It's definitely not Miami.

As much as I love Stone Gossard and PJ (he was the first musician I really connected with), I am really over him downplaying/trashing his own guitar playing. He does this in every contemporary interview he does now.
No one in Pearl Jam is trying to replicate Dream Theatre or Periphery. But Stone is an AMAZING rhythm guitarist. He plays exactly what the song needs. I don’t want to discount his opinions of himself and assessment of his own art; I don’t think it’s disingenuous. But he’s the only person who believes that.
Also, he’s not dead. If he wants to improve or explore new aspects of his playing, he totally can.

Ed was trying to pull back from the media and Dave did an interview with some drum magazine. The final straw. Fast forward a decade and Ed marries a super model. Hypocrite.
