After a bit of research, I test rode a lightly used 2021 MT-09 (standard version). I bought it that day. I've been riding for close to 50 years, I have never ridden such a fun bike!

I have the standard '21 MT-09, and it has been a blast. I am finally comfortable trusting the IMU to manage the front wheel when doing wheelies. The thought that crosses my mind every time I finish a ride is, "That bike is f'ing crazy."

Hands down the most fun bike I’ve ever owned…I waited 11 months for my 21 mt09 (non sp) to come in but it was so worth the wait. I have a little over 1000 miles now and once the engine is done the break in, it rips. All of the rider aids are perfect. I can’t say one bad thing about it honestly. Just get a sh*t eating every time I twist that throttle. Lol.

OC: Absolutely nailed it! I was lucky enough to find one of three available SP's in the country about an hour away at the time when you released the first ride. Immediately threw down that deposit and was riding it home 150mi and riding it everyday for the past 3 weeks. Love this thing to death and doubt I could think of a bike that would replace it. Great content and summary of it up to this point! Looking forward to more

I could think of one: '22 XSR900. Has all the electronics and cruise standard for less money, probably more stable with longer swingarm and slightly lower headstock. I think it looks better too. Suspension? Meh, pop in new cartridges and a shock.

With the base version being only $1600 less than the SP I can't see how anyone can justify going for the former. The suspension on the SP is so much better and the difference cruise control makes on pretty much any riding scenario is so obvious that it's just illogical.

The only thing that is very wrong with that bike is that you can't find it anywhere. I found one for sale $1000 lower than MSRP and went to buy it and from the time it took me to leave my house and get out to my Yamaha Dealer somone bought the bike. It had literally only been on sale for about 3 hours before it was sold.....🤬🤬🤬.... at this point I think I'll just wait for the 2022 MT10 and Hopefully we get the MT10SP I'm America because if you can afford it I really do think that will be the bike to have that you will never out grow and be very happy with for a very very long time.... and that sound ugh that sound is so beautiful from that MT10 engine. And now it's going to have all the wizbang electronics that you love about the MT09 SP and probably even some even better stuff like electronic shocks you can adjust on the fly or that adapt to riding style automatically.

I can ride it like crazy and still go slow anytime I like without stress.
The engine is 900c and is naked, but it does not get as hot as the Monster 821 which bakes my legs.
The speed and torque blows my mind that riding it in STD mode is the perfect mode for me.
What's wrong with the MT09 is I'm not a fan of its too much alien like look. I hope they mix the XSR and MT09 and aim it to younger riders like the CB650r and Trident 660. MT07 is just weird for me and SV650 feels old lol

I recently rode most of the yamaha bikes such as Mt-03/07/09/10/SP and R3/7 Bolt only bike I liked was mt9 sp and 10. What I didn't like is all of the yamahas don't have turn signal canceling which is so annoying especially when your use to that feature. I hate canceling the signal after a turn. What I didn't like about the mt09 is the menu dial it so cheap and should be more user friendly. They also need to make the screen bigger and colored and make the modes more simpler and come with Bluetooth and USB charger.

09 has enough power for just about everything you can think of. It's satisfying power. It's not the kind of power where you sort of wish there was more there after a while, where you wish it would just go a little harder. No, it doesn't fail to surprise and entertain most every ride.
10 model has stupid power, will always be threatening to cancel your DL, get you big tickets, and will be less fun at legal speeds. You'll eat more tires, insurance will be higher, fuel consumption will be at least 15 mpg less, the heavier rotating mass in the engine and transmission (to withstand bigger power) will affect handling quickness side-to-side, you'll be less satisfied on every ride as you'll feel you spent a lot of money for a lot of power and you cannot use it much of the time. It can become psychological more than anything.

I was between a new XSR900 and this bike about 3 weeks ago and ended up with a new 23 SP because I scored a sick deal! I was looking at used Tuono 1100RR's and BMW S1000R's but decided I would rather go with another Japanese bike brand new and not have to worry about the common issues with Euro bikes. So far this thing has been a blast on curvy back roads. My other bike is a 22 GSX-S 1000GT, which I also love. I would love to get rid of the chrome stem nut though. Just added a 12" Lorababer tinted windscreen and ordered T Rex radiator guard and tail tidy. I decided against the XSR due to the seat and reading about racer who bought that Brembo master from the XSR and installed it on his SP. He noticed little to no difference. The front brake on the SP is pretty good for a Japanese bike. I may upgrade to Vesrah pads just to see.

OC: Only complaints with my 21 SP are what you mentioned. Turning radius at walking speeds, thumb wheel could be a little easier to operate, dash menus look a little too basic. Nothing a big deal at all. Everything else is perfect.

I agree. I have a 2021 standard version as my local dealer has never received an SP version. The only other thing for me is that the front turn signal mounting is very fragile. My right, front turn signal has been disconnected from the mounting for months and I can't seem to get a replacement part from Yamaha. Otherwise I agree with Chase on how great a package this bike is.

I want an mt07 as my first bike, is it stupid to think the mt09 in mode 4 would be the same 'beginner' bike, would save upgrading the mt07 after a year or so ?

I still got my FZ 09 from 2014. I've ridden newer versions, but not the new new one. So far, I like them but I still like mine enough to not want to change it. I have 50,000 miles on mine, 5 track days and a a few low sides and I still love it!

The redesigned engine found on the 2021+ MT09 models are way smoother and more powerful. It's a drastic change in power delivery. Yamaha also refined some features on the 2021+ models as well. I would want to get the newer models simply for the engine. I had a 2017 FZ09...sold it for a 2017 Z900. I still like the Z900's engine way more, but the newer MT09 is a better package than the Z900. The transmission, brakes, and suspension is way more refined on the MT09.

OC: what's wrong with it? Nit picking: I found if I don't hit the shifter down with enough force from 2nd to 1st, it hits neutral. Outside of that, nothing more than what you've mentioned. I love mines. I go to the garage and hang out with it when I'm not riding it.

Awesome bike but couple things, droopy indicators so easily knocked out and hard to get back in, the seat seems to not be the comfort option, it looks essentially just black from the side, best colour is Icon blue IMHO, love the grey ‘cheeks’, little things like very basic levers / pedals, surely in 2021 a hydraulic clutch was doable for ease of use and to get rid of that crappy looking adjustment wheel, TFT is meh, big fat stretchy rubber brake hoses. Super picky but why the retro chrome top nut youll see all the time. All of which I guess can be fixed with the money saved with the standard version…..

OC: I’m going to have to say nothing is wrong with it. The stuff you touched on is notable, with the gas gauge and menu wheel. It’s really nothing more than quirks. I wish someone would make a video with a side view showing the wheelie control at 1, 2, 3 and at different weight riders like 150, 200, 250+ because I come from the Harley world. This bike is the first thing I’ve ever ridden that power wheelies. So at 2 I feel like it barely comes off the ground. But at 1 I feel like I’m going to loop it then the front wheel goes back down and I break out into giggles. I’m curious if it reacts more to different rider weights. I’m over 280 so I’m not sure if the foreign feelings of a wheelie is making my mind think it’s looking up at the sky, or if it doesn’t sense it as fast because my weight puts more grip over the rear tire and it yanks up faster than the computer is sensing it? So seeing it in action from the side would calm my mind from thinking I’m in danger.

So what about a trackday? Not sure how much experience you have in that arena but it's the one thing I haven't been able to find a ton of info on for this new SP. I'm in love with the Tuono, having spent quite a bit of time on one including at the track, it was a bike I felt like I could do anything on. Price, questionable reliability and a lack of dealers in my area mean it's a non-starter though. This bike though, like you said, find a better package out there for $11k. But will it entertain me at the track a few times a year?

Go have a look at the new XSR900. It has all the electronics (including cruise control) as the SP, without the SP suspension costs. Styling is much more pleasing in my opinion. Stability will be greater due to longer swingarm and slightly lower headstock. Stability only makes this engine and chassis more hooked up and quick.

OC: I absolutely love the MT09 SP. Soon as my gf is ready to move up to the MT07 from her MT03. I'm getting the MT09 SP that very day. I've always rode sportbikes and never given naked bikes a real go, but my back fell in love with a naked bikes riding position. Even commuting on a MT07 without a windscreen to start with was better than riding my Daytona while commuting. I'd arrive my back didn't hurt and I felt so much better after my commute.
