  • Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson's Disease - A 2019 Update
Are you considering having Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for your Parkinson's Disease symptoms? Have you already had Deep Brain Stimulation and still have questions about how you can maximize its impact on your symptoms? In this interview, Dr. Sarah King, PT, DPT talks with Dr. Eric Rhoden, PT, DPT about Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson's Disease, and the latest improvements in technology from Medtronic, Abbott, and Boston Scientific.

    38:03 Can DBS increase anxiety?
44:10 Does DBS help with Camptocormia or Pisa Syndrome?
47:40 Can I return for a 2nd DBS placement years after my last surgery?
51:10 Can I exercise while I'm recovering from DBS surgery?
What suggestions do you have to help smooth out the post-surgery programming process?
54:05 Do I have to wait until my medication doesn't work anymore to get DBS?
55:10 If I don't have symptoms on both sides of my body, should I have DBS on one side or both?
1:00:30 How long does it take to find the "sweet spot" with DBS programming after surgery?
1:12:28 How common is infection after DBS surgery?
Can you have DBS implants from two separate companies? (ie Medtronic, Abbott, Boston Scientific)
1:05:55 and 1:15:30 Does DBS help with painful dystonia (when botox has stopped working)?
What is your head supposed to feel like after surgery?
1:23:10 What can I do about the tingling and itching on my scalp after DBS surgery?

Have you had DBS? Are you considering it? What has been your experience?

Had DBS back in 2012 - originally for Essential Tremors, but testing eventually uncovered Parkinson's. As a positive side effect, also treated my Major Depressive Disorder. Only regret is that I didn't ask for testing of playing musical instrument during the operation. But even that has come back, along with a "Lust for Life" (to quote Billy Idol). The battery replacement operation is not as big a hit if one asks for IV sedation only - no gas anesthetic whatsoever. Quicker bounce back to normal, too. Changed my life for the better. Recent research reports have shown that early DBS has had beneficial changes to the brain (search on NIH PubMed under Parkinson's Disease).

Hi.. my dad had DBS back in 2002.. here in UK... and a meditronic stimulator control. Here they attached 2 electrodes to two points in the brain.. close to the speech centres.
The internal battery life we were told was approx 10 years depending on both frequency and adjustments of the settings.
I believe now there is advancements in both positioning and technique of surgery.
      I fully endorse this procedure.

I’m 3 weeks post DBS surgery. I have MedTronic. I’m concerned with having to go under to replace the battery so often.
