If you're an 18-55yo man interested in using fasting to cut hunger in half and lose up to 7lbs of fat a month, I made this for you: bit.ly/FastToLast It's happening THIS WEEKEND! Sep 14th and 15th
Note: If you're new to fasting, take it slow. I'm not your doctor, so I can't guess what's appropriate for you, but I wouldn't start out with a 7 day fast if you've never fasted before.

Not a lot of potassium in sea salt.

By far the hardest part of fasting is the boredom. If you've never done a multiday fast, you have no idea the enormous amount of your daily time is spent thinking about, preparing, or eating food. Depending on your lifestyle, it can be really hard to fill all that extra free time. If you want a fast to be easy, start it when you are very busy.

I hate all this enormous amount of time thinking about, preparing and eating food. I find eating to be an annoying chore. Unfortunately i can't start fasting without also figuring out a way to eat a lot more than i do now when i'm not fasting. That's because i weigh 44.4kg (97.9 lbs), at a height of 171cm (5ft 7.3in). There's barely any fat to lose, and i don't want to lose the little muscle i have.
Even then i feel much better when i'm fasting. I never feel much hunger anyway, and my blood sugar stops being low after around 8h of not eating. I never did it for longer than probably 18h, but up to that time i feel great.

Two years ago in February of 2020, I was a massive 420lbs(6'3") about to turn 40 and I decided enough was enough. I started a six-day fast and then jumped into intermittent fasting on the carnivore diet. I recorded my weight each day along with my waist measurement and food intake when I ate. Nine months later I had lost just over one hundred pounds and thirteen inches off my stomach. It didn't seem hard and I was happy and proud. At the end of one of my fasts, the scale even read 299.9! I was stoked.
It's May of 2022 here I sit at 405lbs. I don't know exactly where I gave up, maybe after I saw I was below 300lbs and convinced myself the job was done. Anyway little by little I started into my old habits and by the holidays I was full-blown eating fast food a lot. I was not tracking any of my stats, they just started to climb back up. A year to take it off and one more to yoyo right back to where I started. FML, I guess it's a common story.
Now I'm back in the mindset of enough is enough. I want to lose the weight, I know I can because I already did. I would like to be healthy and play with my kid without having to have a sit-down after just a few minutes. I've tried to psych myself up to start again but it's always: one last cheat meal or I'll start on Monday. Excuse after excuse. I'm trying to get that motivation I had two years ago. Videos like this get me closer and closer. Thank you for content like this.
If you've read this to the end, thank you for reading my ramblings. Be well and have a great day!

Don’t allow yourself to say one more day, I highly encourage you look into books about self control and restraint.
Also if you’re addicted to fast food it might be time to find new food options.
My boyfriend eats fast food pretty much all summer due to his family not cooking, and he always puts on weight in the summer because of it.
During the school year at university however he will shed weight and even gain muscle.
It’s really hard to quit fastfood but if you can slowly cut it out of your life, along with drinks like soda, it will help.
And maybe you don’t have to stop entirely, you could make it a treat for once a month.
Either way, I wish you the best 💙

I've fasted for 9 days and I can tell you hunger completely stops after day 2. By day 3 it's relatively easy. The hard part is getting through those first two days. I've also discovered that doing cardio on those first two days burns through that liver glucose faster so you can get into ketosis faster. After that, simply walking was enough of a workout for me. I stopped because of the nausea, but I think if I had supplemented electrolytes, I could've stopped the nausea without breaking my fast. I think I'm going to try it again soon. Best sleep I ever had.

You can fast from food for a pretty long time, but need water. 70% of your body is water, it uses up it's stores, they NEED to be replaced for it to function. food is simply the catalyst for inefficient energy conversion, much of which can be done with the stored energy (fat) already there.

I fasted for 3 days when I was 11 years old in order to enter ketosis to treat my epilepsy. The first 24-36 hours is the worst, but after that, hunger vanishes and my mood was improved, I had tonnes of energy and just felt really light and euphoric and completed my homework and chores far faster than I normally did.
I think this is a reason why most religions encourage fasting, it clears out the body, you feel great, and it lets you focus on prayer, and it's easier to enter a euphoric state.
After getting off epilepsy medication, which had the side affect of suppressing hunger, I ended up gaining a lot of weight. I have been working myself towards intermittent fasting. I started by waking up at 7 am and not eating until noon. Then each day I would add 5 minutes on to that. I now do not eat until 1:50 pm and I no longer feel hungry for breakfast. My goal is to get to 4pm as my first meal of the day, and from there I want to start fasting over the weekend.
So far, I haven't lost weight, but I have stopped gaining weight and I have been able to lift more at gym and feel more energy during the day. Also, having fewer meals makes for less of my day spent cooking and cleaning, which is a plus.

I felt amazing, my blood pressure went from 165/120 (this was why I fasted) to 115/80 and stayed there for months later. My IBS got completely cured for 3 months due to gut bacteria reset. I'm into fasting medicine since 2014. I'm fasting NOW, 60 hrs in while writing and going to an open ending prolonged fasting.
I'm an ex obese person. Now i'm bodybuilding lean.
SALT is VERY important for fasting longer than 3-5 days, with a pinch of potassium (but stay low 'cause potassium imbalance could give you death by heart failure).
I lost over 50 kg since 2014, NO LOOSE SKIN at all.
Fasting + bodybuilding = cosmetic surgeon of the Devil.
While fasting for weight loss you'll discover that fasting can cure a LOT of things: autoimmune pathologies, age related cosmetic defects, old scars, skin defects. And it starves cancer too, if you have it.
Surplus IS the main pathology's cause in modern world. Abstinence IS the cure.
    Keep fasting, my friends!

Now i'm doing a prolonged open ended fasting to absorb a skin tissue defect i had for scleroderma morphea - an autoimmune desease. it's working fine, apparently, the collagen plaque is reabsorbing.
I do use supplements - mostly vitamins and minerals - to avoid deficiencies.
Salt and potassium refeeds are the most important and the most difficult to manage, you should not try these advanced fastings with no expertise. Or you'll die.

The part I liked best about fasting is that (to me) it seemed like my stomach shrunk in size. By the time I was done with a 10 day fast, eating half an apple had me feeling full, and my normal food portions seemed crazy big. That lasted for almost 2 months and it almost took effort to get my food intake anywhere near where it was before.
After my 10 day fast, I had come to the conclusion that restaurant portion sizes are a big part of why Americans are catastrophically obese. Each meal you eat out is twice to three times what you can feel full on.
Examples: A Chipotle Burrito Bowl that I used to eat in one sitting is now FOUR meals. I used to get the Jimmy John's Giant sandwich and it was 1 meal and maybe a snack... Now I get the slim sandwich and half can often be plenty to fill me up. Two or three chicken nuggets or one chicken strip or a drumstick is enough.
I don't say no to when my friends want to go out, but it rarely costs me more than the cheapest item on the menu, or I order from the kids menu.
Works wonders and realistically, all you have to do is cut out ALL caffeine and sugar for 2 days before you start no food and you'll make it for as long as you want.
Start with 3 days, then skip 4, then 4 days and skip 3, then 5 and 5, then 7 and 7, after that it's up to you with a week break between each. You'll be shocked at how much weight you will lose.
Keep walking and doing minor exercise and your muscle loss will be minimal to none.

@@ivanaramburo4030 It's a matter of adopting a new lifestyle. When you do fasting, your stomach will shrink in size. Less food will make you feel full. After a 10 day fast, half an apple will make me feel full.
If you go back to your old eating habits, you will gain back the weight. Fasting has an effect of making your body maintain the weight with fewer calories.
The 2000 calorie a day diet is part of why Americans are huge on average. 2,000 calories is a LOT of food, and it takes a LOT of muscle or activity to burn that many calories.
Fasting tunes your body to become very efficient. That efficiency requires lower amounts of calories to be sustained.

I've done a 10 day fast once, and for years would do a 5 day fast once a quarter. The hardest part about fasting, I think, is overcoming the feeling that you SHOULD be eating. Not hunger, not boredom (for me), but the idea that fasting is deleterious to health is a hurdle I constantly have to battle when fasted.

Reminds me of my mother. She spends like an HOUR each day to prepare lunch, and that is not gourmet food. It's usually something simple such as, say, pasta with some salad or vegetable soup with cut sausages and bread on the side.
I'm glad I never picked up that habit. I cook, too, but it takes me maybe 15 min. And there's not that much thinking about it. More like, looking into the fridge and deciding what needs to go first and what would go together well. Yesterday, I cooked half a sweet potato, a potato, three small carrots, and fried some garlic and half a tomato. Add some melted vegan cheese and some pesto, perfect meal. :-)

Lot of it was probably tied to a depression, but I've been feeling better since, having more and more energy with each day. The weight still doesn't go back even now that I eat from time to time. My appetite has significantly lowered, tho I can now enjoy the food, I still don't eat too much. Nowadays I only feel hungry once or twice during a day, but only small portions are enough for me and since I eat quite healthy food, the weight just doesn't go back just yet. Which is a welcome change to be honest.

This video has changed my life for the better.
A few months after first watching this video, I fasted Mondays - Thursdays for 22 times spread over a period of 10 months (88 days total) and lost about 40 lbs. I went from a BMI of 29.0 to 23.6. The rest of the time was able to take a break from it and eat and drink more or less normally (as in, sometimes more, sometimes less). This was, is, and will be a long-term sustainable idea. While a big fraction of a year seemed long at first, I realized it was short compared to the 18 years straight I was unhappy about my health and appearance and felt that my life was somewhat on hold. For years I would see myself in the mirror wishing the weight would just go away but it wouldn't just happen on its own. (I did do occasional dieting here and there during that time, to varying success.)
This video was like discovering a magic trick, as though I've learned I can mysteriously breathe underwater but I'd never tried. Or that my car could actually run without gasoline, but I'd never tried it. Before I'd thought that if I went an entire day without eating I was possibly just explode, or pass out and be unable to move, or something. I often had the frustration of "Well, I've got to eat something to keep my energy level high enough," always trying to compromise or balance and felt never losing weight effectively while still frequently having heartburn.
After a certain point (about a half a day) my hunger level simply peaked and would not grow any larger, and this is a plan that is mentally easier than any calculated dieting plan and one I can be confident is working while I'm fasting. Drinking occasional salt water was a lifesaver, and I relied on coffee, tea with lemon juice, seltzer water (sometimes with sweeteners added), and a few tablespoons of tart cherry juice at night. If nothing else, this psychologically freed me from a starvation phobia. The feeling of "hangry" was actually rooted from unfounded fear; I found it was something that could be simply overcome with a state of mind.
This is something basically easy once I truly set my mind to it and it actually worked, and with a tally sheet I marked my progress with each week completed. That being said, I did have diminishing returns after about the 15th week of it, especially since at that point I was only alternating weeks instead of often going two in a row. In the future, I think it will work better if I just go one or two days at a time every week, and also eat healthy during the days that I do eat. I'll have to monitor my weight, at least maintain it, or hopefully become leaner.
It is simple, strict, and sustainable.

Dumb comment. Of course everyone knows that if you just establish a moderate deficit on a daily basis you will lose weight. But that's difficult to do unless you count calories, and even then your estimate can be significantly off. It's also difficult in another sense for those with food addiction tendencies - you have to try to eat a certain amount, but no more. If you have an addict's mind, then that's analogous to an alcoholic just having one or two drinks. It's very difficult. The fasting approach removes that and simplifies things to a binary which is easier for our minds to deal with - am I eating today? Yes or no. Many people report that counting calories makes their food life extremely stressful - it becomes like an OCD thing.@@Vic-f1t

I'm not sure whether you've looked into this. The Army has done a plethora of research on fasting due to the stress levels they apply to their Special Forces Units, like the Green Berets and Delta Force. Like you stated, after some time, not eating gives way to not being hungry due to reduced levels of gherlin. I was a combat and flight medic for a short duration at Fort Bragg. On occasions, I would be pick cadets in these schools that were going through extreme caloric deficits on particular phases or post graduation training. At times, I would offer them food. Their responses were always the same... I don't need to go through that hell again (they knew by eating high caloric foods, their hunger levels would peak immediately). I'm attempting to find the research papers right now on how the body adapts to high caloric environments and fasting. I know the research is so counter intuitive on what actually happens. However, recently, the Army and military, in general, has pulled a lot of their research from scientific journals.

Pay attention to your thoughts. Your thoughts determine your emotions, which determines your behavior. I know you’ve fasted before, but there could be thoughts that you’re having about the repercussions of fasting. For example, when I first started fasting, even though I’ve got enough body fat, it brought up fears of dying. I also have thoughts of deprivation or restriction and what will happen after the fast, like wanting to make up for the deprivation and gaining the fat back. I look to food for dealing with emotions, and while I realize it’s not the best way to handle how I feel, I do get scared about not having it as an outlet. I also worry about boredom. There are so many things. If you truly pay attention to your thoughts, you’ll know why you’re anxious. Watch the thoughts. Some people see them as clouds and just watch the thoughts come up and drift away. Become the observer of your thoughts, and realize they don’t mean anything. You don’t have to react to them. Then, you feel the anxiety. It’s not about getting past it or just doing it while anxious or stuffing it down. Don’t resist it. Just feel it, and you’ll get to the point where you realize it’s really nothing. It’ll dissipate.
Face the thoughts and anxiety head on. That’s the only way to see that they literally mean nothing and don’t have to impact your fasting or anything else for that matter.

I used to weigh around 88 to 94 kg. After having enough with my dirty diet that is full of sugar and snack, I hit the gym and changed my body drastically. I was 76-78 kg. but full of muscle and had visible abs (I am 168 cm. btw). But after discovering fasting, that is what I call real life changing. I started with 16:8 and gradually made it to OMAD. And that was quite an experience, I eat around 2300 kcal a day, usually in the evening or night and I never felt hunger. I am a college student and I could focus on the lecture 95 percent (need to refill my water 5 percent of the time) of the time without thinking about food or rest. I even deadlift 120-140 kg without pre-workout food or supplement. Don't feel any fatigue or sleepy during the day. I once even walked 10 kilometer with very heavy travelling backpack under the scorching 39°C sun and didn't feel exhausted. I think people should consider more about fasting. It is really amazing.

Type 1 is a genetic disorder type 2 is largely diet related and develops over time. You could be putting people at serious risk for anyone who is Type 1 and looking to lose weight, please be clear... I'm a Type 1 and this video got suggested to me, so it will happen! "Our study is not without limitations: since this was the first study assessing the safety and glycemic effects of prolonged fasting, our study participants were not randomized to the sequence of the 12 hrs and 36 hrs, therefore 12 hrs fasting periods were always followed by the 36 hours period. In addition, in case of a hypoglycemic event, participants administered carbohydrates and strictly speaking the fasting period ended at this time point. However, this administration was critical for safety reasons. Furthermore, only participants running on CSII were allowed to lower the basal insulin rate but not those with MDI. Notwithstanding, within the group of participants on CSII the basal insulin rate was similar for both trial arms. While this is important data on prolonged fasting in people with type 1 diabetes, we appreciate that from a single 36 fasting period one cannot extrapolate to the safety of intermittent fasting over a longer period of time in this population, an aspect that clearly needs further attention and investigation. "
Hence, it is still not worth risking Type 1 Diabetes Patients with fasting.

I have been fasting for over 20 years, with my longest fast at 28 days. What I do is mix it up. Every month I fast for for different lengths of time, sometimes 48 hours, or the longest 5 days. This gives my body a jolt of what is not expected. This also cuts down my food bills unintentionally. A routine is the worst for me and my body. I am so used to not eating that I do not feel any negative effects. I would say that not enough information is put out there regarding electrolytes. It is so important that your body gets sodium, magnesium and pottasium during fasting. I can easily get an electrolyte powder that contains these, but over the years I take a more DIY approach. I put Himalayan salt in my water (total 1 tsp/per day). I also add the "lite salt" the ones that have less sodium, such as Morton Lite Salt. This has the potassium my body needs. As for magnesium, there are so many types out there that I just either soak my feet in epsom salts at night or just mix the epsom salts with water in a spray bottle and spray myself. When it dries, a white residue is left on your skin which you wipe off. There are no side effects with this magnesium hack. I basically mix up fasting with OMAD, Keto on some days and sometimes I just want to have my Cherry Garcia ice cream and that is ok. My body is so used to mixing it up that I can go into a fast right after a junk food eating phase (this lasts no more than one meal). The best thing is the growth hormone increase that fasting increases, also autophagy. When my doctor tried to push a statin on me, I referred him to the Dr. Paul Mason videos and also mentioned that my great uncle worked for Pfizer way back when Lipitor was developed, tested and marketed. I told him I knew the inside scoop and I had no need for it. If anyone wants a really fantastic explanation on cholesterol, Dr. Paul Mason has a fantastic video that is s

Oooof, I hope that you're doing okay. I think that you make a very important point- knowing with the help of other people/medical instruments and examinations or by your own observation whether you suffer more because of fasting or it just makes things better. For people who are overweight, or are healthy weight, but want to do a cleansing thing, it might be beneficial if they're not missing some essential nutrients that they require daily; thus, suffering the effects of the lack. So, for example, for my case I'd say it's safe (only did close to 24 hours fast so far, so I can't say what exactly happens with longer fasts). But the main point is if it's healthy for you. Fasting in itself is as simple as that- abstaining from any chosen inputs (food, any types of liquids or both). It can be harmful or beneficial depending on where the person is.
If a person is at a place where you were in your past, it can further the harm. A body that's already lacking in things, putting it under further stress of the same type can destroy it irreversibly or even kill the body in some cases. It's very important to understand when and when not to apply the fasting protocol.

People need to understand that fasting is nature's way of healing. Look at the animals when they're sick, they don't eat or drink until they get better. with that being said, if you are someone who has never fasted a day in your life and/or has diabetes or health issues, you have to do this slowly. start with 12 hours, then increase it gradually. Try a 24 day water fast and see how you feel , and from there you can increase it. Also transitioning to a more whole food diet will help support your body and rebuild.

I’ve been fasting for years. I love doing at least one 21-30 day fast yearly. Last year I did a 40 day fast and I’m on day 2 of this years 40 day fast. Not digesting food allows your body’s organs to heal. You can literally heal from illness, disease and cancer. Fasting is so beneficial. It’s a journey. The first few days do suck but once past them you aren’t hungry, the whole journey has ups and downs. I find you crave things, and I feel like it’s just my body getting past it. I get headaches and old pains and again it’s just the body healing and moving past walls, hurdles etc. Long fasts are amazing. Everything always feels better after. I mostly refeed with grapefruit juice and steamed carrots. That’s what works for me, plus soups and fermented foods will benefit the gut. Sauerkraut is amazing! My favourite fasts are coconut water fasts. I did one in Bali where I drank 6-7 coconuts daily that had 1-1.5 litres each of coconut water daily, but I’ve fine boxed coconut water. Coconut water is filled with vitamins and minerals as well as a bit of fibre which helps empty the bowels of what’s remaining.

Those days are a festival for me. A tim only for myself: no shoping, eating and preparing food.
Only training and learning. It literally makes me younger and happier in any way.
I have 2 bits to share:
    1. electrolytes are *crucial*. Not taking minerals *will allways* lead to lowering blood pressure.
Not just salt (NaCl), but as said at the end of this video, Mg and K are key elements not to feel slugish -> low blood pressure.
    2. training and excercising. try to spend your carbs without sitting in couch, to get the most of fasting benefits sooner. and during fast you will have more energy: don't waist it, train and enjoy!
one more for smoother fasting start: at least few days before, lower your carb intake and eat more fatty foods. it will prepare your body for stress-free only-fat diet from your fat stores. the simplest and most healthiest way is to bring peanuts or almonds to the table just before start of fasting. :)

@Will Swift you have to supplement electrolytes otherwise you don't. that's why i said you have to really know what you're getting into and how to be safe. generally people who are extended fasting need 2-6g of salt depending how active they are. its a general formula but it can be down to how you feel/experience. for example if i start feeling off i know its usually caused by lack of sodium because im on a medicine thats a diuretic so i tweak that until i feel better. i'd always suggest starting shorter and then building up from there. i don't even do long fasts like that anymore.

As a teen I basically starved myself and always felt hungry. However I finally had a six pack. I am a firm believer that the stress of adulthood and lack of general opportunity (having enough to comfortably live AND enjoy life) causes many people (especially those getting into their 30's now) to put on the pounds and have a concoction of health problems.
People in their 20's have NEVER known a world without the internet, instant gratification, instant information, constant stimulation. They and people in their 30's are also by and large on the lowest wages, highest house prices and living costs, doing the job of three people and being paid for one. Whilst also having retirement age to 67, which will net them £24k TOTAL pension and means they don't get into their desired field for an additional 10+ years...so are 10 years behind their own parents.
House prices keep going up and up, restrictions keep getting tighter and tighter, parents leave their children estates they can't be afford, so are sold to pay Inheritance tax (40%) to the government. Then we have children being born right now, who will forever rent or those who own houses stand to lose 80% of their equity in the property.
Sorry for the tangent but my point was, life is so stressful now...so don't be so hard on yourself.

@@JesusChrist_IsTruth-LoveForALL Wait, it gets better. You have a threshold up to £325k...so anything above that is 40% IHT. So, if the assets are say £500k and you don't have enough to cover the 40% then you must sell the property to cover the IHT.
In effect, you pay tax for everything in the UK, on your food, petrol etc, nothing new. So, break it down as £1...every purchase of that £1 is 20% (VAT...value added tax...see where I'm going?) So, in reality the end user, you...only really get 30p for that £1 earned in buying power once you have paid your utilities, food, rent, petrol...then the patrons that receive money from you is then taxed on what you paid them. so, it's a cycle...so long as the money stays in the UK it makes little difference, but when foreigners come and work for say 9 months...they then claim back the tax they paid as well...leaving a shortfall that then increases tax to you guessed it...the locals.
In a nutshell you lose your parents home because you can't afford the IHT, then have to purchase more than one dwelling if you have siblings with the leftover money...diluting the assets even more...just to keep you in poverty.

After many years I've decided to get back into fasting again thanks to your video! I've been following you for a long time and enjoy your videos on fasting, ketosis, and how the body works.
Over the past 6 years I've gained around 50 pounds and I've reached a point where I can't let this happen to myself anymore. I've tried all sorts of ways to lose weight but it's been hard to stick to something. The idea of fasting for several days at a time to then keep off most of the fat that's been used up during those times while recycling the old body cells seem like a very appealing process. It's also very promising to know that the body boosts metabolism during the extended fasting periods while preserving muscle as long as we exercise.
One thing that I'm struggling to understand, however, is the line between a short (less than 24 hours), daily intermittent fasting and a prolonged fasting (24+? or 48?) when it comes to our body's metabolism adaptation. My understanding is that with calorie restriction diet your body will slowly adapt to the energy input and decrease the energy expenditure accordingly. Well, short form intermittent fasting is also a form of calorie restriction if you're eating the other meals that you don't skip normally, not compensating for the skipped meal(s). If prolonged fasting boosts metabolism, exactly when does this "boost" kick in? Because if the reason metabolism gets boosted for prolonged fasting is due to our body breaking a certain threshold (measured in hours of fasting) and short form intermittent fasting (16-8, 20-4) doesn't hit that mark, isn't it going to produce similar results to a calorie restricted diet? Of course eating less frequently with short-form intermittent fasting may help, but I'm curious to find out what is the minimum number of hours we need to fast in order to not let our body adapt to the next lowered calorie meal.
e.g. For a 200+ pound male, if he were to eat 1000 calories in 3 meals a day his body would probably lower the energy expenditure at some point right? What if he ate 1000 calories in one meal per day? What if he fasted for 2 days and ate 1000 calories to break the fast, then start eating normally from that day? I would love to find out when our body decides to lower the energy output.
oh, and how did you get that continuous glucose monitor? I tried to obtain one in the U.S., but they're only obtainable for people with diabetes...

As far as I know, yes you are correct in that intermittent fasting produces very similar results or is essentially the same as caloric restriction in terms of only weight loss, however there are hormonal(insulin) and other benefits (blood sugar, increased growth hormone around/after 24 hrs) to intermittent fasting that caloric restriction will not provide.
I believe you need to be in your fourth day of fasting to see the metabolism increase, but if you are only after the growth hormone, you can get that after 24 hrs.
