Then try adding a melody on top of that, just search easy biginner guitar riffs. You'll be off playing in no time. Second blueprint (for my friend) is easier, if you have a friend who plays an instrument tell him to throw you in the deep end, skip the "learning easy chords only" and learn chords+melody simultaneously. Imagine being such a genius that you create a score that captures the melancholy and the urgency in the same piece and that's exactly what the movie needed. Hans Zimmer.
I agree! His relentlessness is admirable, he didn't allow these small mistakes to spoil his performance and that just shows how good of a pianist he's going to become in the future
I love the comments on this video, everyone noticed his mistakes and arent making fun of him, but encouraging him and congratulating him for his bravery. We need more people like this in the world that accept mistakes and focus on the good rather than the bad. Amazing performance and amazing audience!
Homie blew through his mistakes like they were nothing, recovering so smoothly. The piano will forever be a timeless instrument. Well played. Also I like how the crowd goes from teasing (like highschoolers do) to complete silence once he starts to play. Music really does transcend all boundaries.

The girl screaming at 5:40 made me literally laugh out loud omg. She screamed like her soul was leaving her body. Hanz Zimmer does that to me, too, lady. I feel you.
As a pianist myself with over 10 years XP, I am impressed with the passion he plays. ESPECIALLY recovering it after a mistake. When I have bad performances and I mess up, sometimes I go into autopilot to focus on hitting the right notes and sacrifice musicality. The only times I don't care I made a mistake and just play expressively is when I am playing my favorite songs alone. But this guy can get into that headspace in a crowded stage. Absolutely awesome.
Not only is this such a difficult piece to play, but to play this in front of your high school takes tremendous courage. You did amazing. Well done young man 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
It's actually not that hard of a piece. I've been playing piano for a couple of years and could sight read almost half of it. Playing in front of others, now that is hard. I myself, get so nervous my hands start shaking and sweating 😭
I played for my middle/high school. highschool came first middle school came 2nd I had to perform two times... and I was facing everybody. everyone could see my face...
I can't imagine the amount of courage it must've taken for you to play in front of such a huge audience. The sheer commitment and passion you displayed even when you made mistakes is what makes this so touching.
Every musician makes mistakes when playing live, but how you recover from those mistakes in the moment is what makes you great. This guy did just that. Awesome stuff
I dont agree. While the idea of mistakes adding a "human touch" might seem endearing, it undermines the very essence of musical performance: precision, accuracy, and respect for the original composition. EMotional resonance should not be conflated with something like flawed execution. An accomplished musician can (and should) deliver emotion without deviating from the pieces given rhythm and melody. I guess You could possibly appreciate these imperfections in a philosophical way, but in a performance, the player should aim for perfection. So please lets not excuse mistakes as an expression of humanity.
@@ascii5616 While mistakes can be made and be excused, I certainly do not agree with these mistakes adding human touch, and they certainly do NOT make the piece more beautiful! With that said, I agree with the points you have made entirely.
The way everyone was cheering him up before he even started playing just amazes me and shows how our generation is supposed to be. Perfectly matching the beautiful aura of the song!
ive been playing piano for two years now. Guitar for 7. This is still so impressive to me, im glad this type of music is still alive in younger generations and not just appealing to older audiences. Hans Zimmer really made a masterpiece with this one.
@@MrCow579 you're going to love it! Plus! He was there in Paris, not only the orchestra without him, but Hans Zimmer in person ! As a pianist, the passion is all there in this performance. For everyone that's not a musician here, it takes more than 2 months to perfect a piece. For something learned in 2 months, this is excellent work. Give it a year of practice and the muscle memory will make it impossible to miss a note. Every yearly recital I had, I would have to play up to 9 songs by pure memory in front of a judge with every expression and note in perfect place. It would take half the year to learn all the pieces, then the other half to perfect them for recitals and that was with daily practice. To this day, even with 25 yrs experience, when I play in front of any audience I still get nervous and miss notes here and there, but most people never notice because they aren't musicians and their ears aren't trained to pick up on it.
Much respect to you for living that kind of life. It takes time and patience to get anything perfect and such dedication is very seldom come by. You must truly love being a pianist. So Said the Great Andre Rieu "It is a song about the search for happiness, happiness that we all need so much in our lives."
I love how eloquently you put that. Very few times do we listen to anything live that the performer doesn’t mess up in some way or another, be it singing, playing and instrument or performing an act. I think in the times we live in now we’re so used to seeing a perfectly polished performance made in a studio with all the mistakes edited out that we forget we are human and mistakes are made and the performance is still beautiful no matter what, it’s the beauty in the chaos.
Holy shit as a former pianist my heart is beating out of my chest because of his courage to even want to play for an audience that insanely huge. Amazing job!
At my graduation, I played this exact piece as well and I can confidently say that he absolutely nailed it. It took me months of practice to learn this piece and also a lot of encouragement from my friends to play it in front of a crowd. My performance wasnt perfect but I do not regret doing it 👍
He is going far and high places. This version brought me to tears because of how pure it was. How he handled his mistakes added another level of depth and beauty to this already powerful song.
Yes! How you handle mistakes is the sign of a great performer. I sang opera and did competitions in high school/college, but I was never good at recovering from mistakes. I just could never get back on. I think it’s one of the hardest things to learn about performing!
YOOOOO WE GOT A WHOLE 6 MINUTES OF LISTENING AT THIS MASTERPIECE BY THIS HYPER TALENTED BOY! KEEP GOING WITH THE PIANO AND NEVER GIVE UP! YOU ARE THE BEST!!!
Right? Saying "Yeah, you we're born for this..." and you're like "Well, I started playing at age 5 so it's been a lot of work." and still hear "yeah yeah sure, but I mean, it must be nice being so talented and unique..." Like, come on 🤣
@@bush7643 No, purely natural is "gift", even though they all may be scrambled at time. Talent is something people have deep afinity with, but need a bit of training to develop. A skill, on the other hand, is anything useful one is proeficient at, learned or not.
The mess ups, pauses, and replays of single notes make this feel more natural. Yeah, "perfect" covers exist, but this has the natural, human feel to it, and would've been amazing to experience in person. Great job!
He did a great job but also I love that no one actually knows the name of the song. They just say interstellar but the song is called Cornfield Chase and it is composed by Hans Zimmer. The entire soundtrack of this movie is incredible. Good job!
This specific arrangement is actually titled Interstellar - Main Theme. While you are technically correct to say it's Cornfield Chase in part due to the fact it does contain that theme, but this arrangement isn't Cornfield Chase by Hans Zimmer. It's an adaptation of Hans Zimmer's Cornfield Chase. Most of these arrangements expand on the original soundtrack. I believe Cornfield Chase is also orchestral, whereas the "Main Title" is a piano adaptation. I've literally practiced this very piece hundreds of times 😂 it's quite a technical song for beginners and this young man did very well especially under such immense pressure. Technicalities aside, Interstellar is a beautiful film and accompanied with an incredibly beautiful and fitting soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Truly a masterpiece of both cinema and music, in my opinion!
@@PoofyKittens Yes, I noticed that it wasn’t just Cornfield Chase. Thank you for the clarification on the exact piece :) I just never hear people refer to the song by its actual name, when it’s specifically played on its own. Exactly, I know nothing about music but I can easily hear how he transitions from the mistake to the next rift or part of the song almost flawless and sounds amazing, hard to think this is a high school performance
Right off the bat I love it how they encourage him but then have the respect to be silent to listen to the piece. My daughter was in a music school when she was 5-7 and performed in concerts where several grown adults were always loudly talking through her whole piece that we had painstakingly practised. It was brutal. Fair play to these kids, and to his beautiful piece. I love this video
Not gonna lie - this brought a tear. The date was December 17th, 1982, at Dryden High School, in Ontario Canada - I performed solo piano in public for the very first time. It was a day that changed my life. Because DHS served students from several communities in the Dryden area, the audience was probably 4 times larger as what the audience shown here appears to be. Christmas holidays were about to begin, I accompanied a pretty girl to the "Snowball Dance" that night in the same auditorium, and had my first real kiss. Memories like this made this one of the most memorable, and certainly the most important, day of my life. I then set out to make music my life, and that's what my life became, and at 58 years of age now, still is. People don't remember the mistakes you make. What's remembered are the smiles and feelings that you can provide those people because of what you do, and much more importantly - what you provide yourself. It's the passion of music. I wish this young lad every success and hope he remembers THIS day, the same way I remember my experience, like it was yesterday, even though it was over 40 years ago.
You've got some good friends. The hype prior to the performance was something special. That was also a great performance. Didn't let the mistakes phase you, and played them just as confidently as the notes you played correctly. There's a lesson here, but I'm sure many others have already made the point. Keep going, and don't ever stop! It's all uphill the older you get, but it looks like you're in good company!
the most impressive thing is he almost completely managed to go ahead over the errors, almost without panicking. I've been there in middle school and as i made the first error i got all my body frozen from panic. well done
I'm 12 (13 now) and have been playing piano for just over a year. This is such a hard piece to master, especially with the arpeggios near the end + the cross-over hand part. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you know how well you played :)
This honestly made me cry, every cover i hear of this song, people put so much of their heart into it, even the slightest mistake is not even a mistake, just a minor bump in the road of playing this whole song, the only word that is close enough to describe interstellar is Beautiful.
I'm honest: I cried at 2:40 . The whole scene, the music, the passion and this "oh wow" moment in the audience. I don't know him but i just was proud of him and touched in this situation. This was more then just "playing music in front of someone."😅
i love this piece. i performed this for my music GCSE’s (for people who don’t come from the UK, those are your exams that you do at 15 or 16 years old) and i remember day after day working tirelessly to perfect it. no matter how hard i tried, no matter how many hours, i couldn’t get it perfect. i had missed notes and slight slip ups every single time. when i finally sat down for recording so it could be sent to the exam board my hands were trembling and my heart sank. but i played the best i could, and despite a few slight errors i called it a day and sent it off. i got full marks. it went to show that nothing needs to be flawless to be considered perfect and this performance reminded me of the beauty of this song. thank you caleb.
im doing my performance in october and i've got my first mock in about 6 weeks, i'm currently learning a grade 5 piece i hate but know i can get full marks with, yet this story has made me want to play something i can play with passion instead of having to robotically follow sheet music. my favourite piece is Chopin's Ballade No.1, and i played it for a mock mock mock performance a couple months back and did okayly, but your thing about hands trembling and your heart sinking made me feel much better now i look back, as everyone in my class played perfectly without slipups but i had that awful feeling of just not knowing where to go - and forgetting how to read sheet music. don't know where i went with this comment but just wanted to say your comment has inspired me to possibly lose a few marks but be able to play a piece i love.
Congratulations on getting full marks! Mistakes are little nuggets of gold, if you can be aware of them, it will help you self-assess where to strengthen or focus, they are not a bad thing at all!

I would do anything to hear someone play this song in live. it's like it manages to tell everyone's story without changing a note. a tear is falling from my eye now
Lovely performance! I love this piece. Apparently Nolan's only guidance to Zimmer was to write a piece about a father's love for his kids - if you have seen the movie you know the relevance. What blows me away is how you can hear that so clearly in the music. Starts as a single refrain, which slowly builds until another is added, with the two refrains intertwining, changing and improving each other, with sad and hopeful parts. I'll never be a father, but this piece makes me feel some aspect of that experience.
well... that would explain why this always chokes me up... it encompasses all the feelings associated with being a father, pride, joy, despair, love, sadness... it's all there if you're able to not just hear but feel the notes
I loved how the audience patiently listened to the music ..though he had some troubles a few times ..but they just listened...not a single interruption...that's just wow
that was such a special performance, keep going on your piano journey bro you're right where you should be!! some mistakes here and there but that's totally natural with such a demanding and hyped crowd haha you're amazing
I would just die out of the excitement if I were in that audience bc I love interstellar so much and he actually knows how to play the whole thing like damnnnnn 😭💖

Ive tried playing this and after about a year of playing I still find this piece difficult. Just to hear it all the way through send chills down my spine
This was incredible and actually taught me something. I am currently learning piano and I have had this terrible habit of if I hit a wrong note, I'll stop playing completely and no matter how many other correct notes I play, I don't feel like the piece is good unless I've hit literally 100% correct on the notes. I got to a point to where it was quite unhealthy and would call myself names and really just beat the shit out of myself mentally for it. In full honesty, when I heard the first couple mistakes you made I thought "ehh he's got some practicing to do" then after I heard a bit more I thought "yeah he ain't got it" (I know this sounds harsh but spoiler alert, theres a point to me saying it). I actually paused the video and almost clicked off but then, I started reading some of the comments and didn't. I thought about what that movie is truly about. The undeniable and relentless aspects of the human spirit. Through intense struggle, catastrophe, and calamity, we continue on through life. Even if the body is near its end, the spirit still pushes for more, onward. Just like the quote from the movie by Dylan Thomas "Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light." THAT IS LITERALLY WHAT YOU DID! And when people say your mistakes added to the performance, that's what they mean! You fought through them and continued on and on no matter what! It was quite literally like watching the meaning of the music come to light while it was being played! The support at the end was insane. Them cheering so loud and passionately at the end really taught me something. I'm gonna try to start giving myself credit for all the right notes I played FIRST then accepting mistakes (because they are inevitable), and fighting through them without letting them tear me apart mentally. Thank you for sharing this, amazing incredible performance.
This is so me!!! It happens a lot to me as well, it's hard to accept the fact that the piece is good enough, you just gotta keep going through and keep practicing!! thanks for sharing

As a pianist myself with over 10 years XP, I am impressed with the passion he plays. ESPECIALLY recovering it after a mistake. When I have bad performances and I mess up, sometimes I go into autopilot to focus on hitting the right notes and sacrifice musicality. I don't know if it's just me, but your mistakes somehow make the piece feel more human and beautiful. They actually add to your performance
So please lets not excuse mistakes as an expression of humanity.

music will always be alive
Even i'm not a pianist. I notice some mistake
@@tanah97 of course there are mistakes, this is a very hard piece to play especially within 2 months

Why will you never be a father?
Don’t have an answer but I assume he just doesn’t want to
"YOURE SO HOT" had me rolling 😂 o wish i had supporters like these kids
I loved how the audience patiently listened to the music ..though he had some troubles a few times ..but they just listened...not a single interruption...that's just wow
that was such a special performance, keep going on your piano journey bro you're right where you should be!!
some mistakes here and there but that's totally natural with such a demanding and hyped crowd haha
you're amazing
I would just die out of the excitement if I were in that audience bc I love interstellar so much and he actually knows how to play the whole thing like damnnnnn 😭💖
MAD respect as a piano player. I feel really uncomfortable playing in front of family members as is, I envy that kind of confidence to play in front of an audience. Killed it 💯🔥
The courage it takes for a teenager to get up in a room in front of his entire school and perform is 👏👏👏
Ive tried playing this and after about a year of playing I still find this piece difficult. Just to hear it all the way through send chills down my spine
And after only learning it for two months too
This was incredible and actually taught me something.
Just like the quote from the movie by Dylan Thomas "Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
THAT IS LITERALLY WHAT YOU DID!
Ignore the need for perfection as it doesn't exist. I strove for perfection when I was younger. Now I understand art is your unique expression. Raw. Beautiful. Unique. 🙏 KNOW you can and you will. ❤
if youre practicing you should stop completelely refocus breathe and go again so your muscle memory . its even ok to be a thread upset just enough to remeber the mistake . play as many times possible correctly. Cheers
That’s deep.
But it’s a RUclips comment, not a fricking essay
@@GMW99Its really not that long but if you have the attention span and a reading comprehension of a two year old then I guess it might’ve hurt your brain to read it.
been playing for 14 years and can confirm that, despite his mistakes (which I also make in school concerts LOL), this dude is a legend
You have no idea how emotional interstellars music makes me. Coming from a man who very rarely shows emotion.
It’s an amazing score, possibly Zimmer’s best.
same
@@MindinVioletThe fact it only won best visual effects is a crime
Edgelord
stfu some of us actually don't show much emotion and we aren't proud of it fyi
The fact that he didn't pass out from the amount of cameras getting so close to his face and all of the loud yelling is impressive. Good job man! As someone who has played for 13 years, I can say he played very well. :)
I love that kids these days recognize Interstellar the movie and it’s music as incredible.
Don’t get me started on the father/daughter reunion scene!
Theres just something about the interstellar soundtrack that hits so hard and tugs at my strings.
Tell me im not the only one?
Performance was amazing btw
Mistakes are insignificant when the passion is beyond boundaries. It was magical. The audience was so cool too. They did understand the importance of keeping quiet in bw the performance
Wether it is Hans Zimmer, or you, 2:40 gives me such chills every time
