For all Floor Jansen fans: Singer Floor Jansen confesses to Flair: 'I thought metal was terrible music' Floor Jansen (39) tours the world as lead singer of the metal band Nightwish and recharges in her house in the woods in Sweden. When she participated last year with 'Beste Zangers', the Netherlands finally got to know her. "Somehow I like that, stupid huh?" She initially did not know the program with which she broke through in the Netherlands, nor did the other artists who participated. She has been living with her Swedish husband Hannes - with whom she had daughter Freja in 2017 - in Sweden for five years and doesn't watch Dutch television. Why did she participate? She was impressed by the footage she saw. Besides, there was a good chance that through her this would make people curious about metal in general and Nightwish in particular. In the last episode she sang Phantom of the opera together with Henk Poort in an unparalleled way, the footage went all over the world. And now the whole of the Netherlands knows who Floor Jansen is. She is relaxed at one of the tables in the lounge. Denim jacket, jeans, long dark hair. Around her, people are busy making calls or working on their laptops. In between, Floor is in a calm state of being. She drinks tea, speaks softly, almost shyly. She talks about how nice Sweden is. About their remote home in the woods. It is a bit like Limburg where she spent part of her childhood. Had Limburg not been an option? “Hannes and I lived in Finland when we met. I had moved there because Nightwish is a Finnish band. Although I sing in English, I wanted to learn the language and it works best when you immerse yourself in it. Finnish is very difficult, I never learned to speak it well. Of course it doesn't help if you have a Swedish man. Hannes missed Sweden and because I was already used to the peace and space in Finland, we moved there. We now have a very nice house in the countryside. With a dog and cats, and my two horses. When we moved into this house, with a huge plot of land around it, I immediately said I wanted horses. That was my girlhood dream.” You were bullied as a child, you call that a dark period, was being with the horses a way to escape for a while? “Because we moved often, I was always an outsider. I spoke differently than the children in my class, looked different, was tall. That bullying lasted seven years. My parents often went to school, but there they calmly said that there was nothing they could do. I can still get angry about that, because you actually say: 'Bad luck for you, just figure it out'. I withdrew to my own world, to nature, to the horses. So yes, in a way that was a flight.” “So was music, by the way. At one point those were the two things I went for. My career choice test also showed equestrian sport and conservatory. I really wanted to go to the conservatory, until I understood that the vocal training was either very classical or jazz. I had nothing to do with either of them. That is why I went to the Equestrian Center Deurne, a horse training course. That was very hard. I ended up there from high school and had to work hard every day. Some muscles in my body had become so hard that the blood flow in my arms was no longer functioning properly. I had a failure in my hands, so bad that I could hardly drive because I let the reins slip out of my hands all the time. It just wasn't fun anymore. When I heard that there was going to be a rock academy, I immediately registered.” Were your parents surprised that you started doing this? "I don't think so. I was also involved in musicals at school, so it didn't come out of the blue. I think they have kept their heart, because of course it is very insecure. But they have always been behind me. They said: 'You have a talent, you have to do something with it.' My father plays the guitar and sings. He's more in the blues corner. My sister Irene also sang in a metal band for a while and we also performed together. But I'm the only one in our family who made it her job." Were you immediately into metal? “I didn't really like it at all. A friend of mine was listening to it and I thought, what kind of horrible music is that? I was a little late developing my own taste. In the first school band I sang in, we played pop and rock songs. I also really liked grunge, but more to listen to. It wasn't until I moved to Limburg and made friends who listened to different metal bands that I saw the beauty of it. It's not just loud screaming and screeching guitars. The music we make with Nightwish has so many nuances, it's pop, folk, rock, symphonic passages, it's very accessible and melodic. For me, this kind of metal music is the ultimate combination of heavy music, pure feelings and female vocals.” Metal music is a man's world, do you thrive on that? “I don't really know any better. I stepped into this life from school. I actually don't realize that I work almost exclusively with men. It works well for me, I like it too. Men are very direct, there is no hassle. I never think: what is your hidden agenda? I do notice, now that I'm getting older, that I miss female company. Just because women look at things differently and that's sometimes a relief when you're only surrounded by men. That's why it was nice that at the time my female friend went along on tour as a nanny. I had very different conversations with her. She also saw when I was not feeling well and immediately asked how I was doing. Men don't ask that quickly, or don't even notice." By joining 'Best Singers' you hoped that more people would listen to your music. Did that work? "Yes. Our concerts in the Netherlands were immediately sold out. The nice thing is that it went both ways. A lot of people who listen to my music have also embraced Henk Poort. What I'm especially happy about is that I was able to show that metal isn't just satanic music, sung by screaming angry men." Do you also think: finally known in the Netherlands? “Haha. Somehow I like that, stupid huh? It bothered me that we are known all over the world and barely got a foothold in the Netherlands.” Translated from an article in the Dutch magazine 'Flair' from May, 20, 2020 (Zangeres Floor Jansen biecht op aan Flair: ‘Ik vond metal vreselijke muziek’)

Love seing Hannes! Floor and Hannes are so cool and I love their complicity. So fuuny together. Thanks for this super fan friday. I am ready for the live stream tomorrow Take care !
Thank you so very much Mrs, Jansen! You and Nightwish have given me enormous will to get things done these past couple of months. The fan Friday's, the news about the Amsterdam show videos and documentary and... The Biggest Boost of all was finding out you and the band are dropping by, hopefully, next August in Romania. Bought the tickets today as soon as they were made available. Even if it will be moved up I'm still glad you wonderful folk have my country in your plans. It as an absolute honor to be living in the same days as you and your most talented friends and witness history in the making!
Nightwish Musicians are Professionals on the highest Level - Tuomas is a Genius/Prodigy/Music itself and he sees and feels Music into it's Core - Floor is the best in the Universe to channel the feelings and story of the music with her "she can sing whatever, any genre, any octave, any placement and any style" of a unique Voice Canvas AND Beautiful as hell as a bonus :) Now for sure you CAN, HAS and WILL succeed with this unique Recipe!
To become a genius in smth it's not enough to do it great, it's necessary to become that smth itself. Every master is an avatar of their art, and Tuomas is one with his. I'd say his brain is made of music, he thinks in music, he perceives the world in music. The transition is a sacrifice in some sense, but it provides a completely different angle of perception and cognition so the payoff is a whole new universe, which i consider pretty sufficient.
I was working but everything needs to be paused for Fan Friday so here I am. It's an important part of my week and I really look forward to this every week. Thank you for gifting us with these videos. We love you so much. 🤘
Toumas is the type of musician that understands his gifts and does not take that for granted. He is the musicians musician. What a true honor it must be to work along side him. Man if Tuomas and Arjen (from Ayreon) collaborated on a project. That would be musical bliss and ear candy galore!
Tuomas is the kind of guy that know how to extract the best of what he has on hands. Now with Floor, someone able to sing anything, versatile to say the least. He is now free to write everything he dreamt of. We are just blessed to have this band to bring joy for us, they make us in awe, even in our darker days. All hail to the King and the Queen of the Symphonic Metal. (and whatever comes out from Tuomas' mind)
Leuk dat Hannes ff de show kwam stelen.. maar heel goed dat je het weer van je zelf maakt😘 Tuomas is een meester in wat hij doet en met jullie allemaal wordt het fenomenaal💋
Ha! That was great! 😂You know, I wouldn't object if the two of you shared Fan Friday once in a while, or if he guest hosted. I bet fans would have questions for him, as well. Hmmm, pets. I'm actually not much of a pet person, so I guess I'll just wait and see what happens.
A pleasure to see Hannes drop into the video and another entertaining 'Fan Friday.' Pets: It is well known animals are an important part of your lives but is there an agreement of some sort how many (and specie) is enough and how many is too many?
Thanks Floor! Your Fan Fridays are a lot of fun and so very informative! I think it's a universal truth that Tuomas Halopeinen is a genius. He's written some of the most beautiful, thoughtful, reflective and powerful music of the last 50 years. In my opinion his talents and gifts have been limited by the 'canvas' that he had before Floor joined the band. He had been working with a 'two-dimensional' canvas and now has a 'three-dimensional' canvas. That is what a singer like Floor allows with her range, power and emotional talents. This doesn't take away from either Tarja or Annette but recognizes their limits. IMO Tarja saw every song as either a classical or an operatic vision. Annette lacked power. Floor has few limitations and this allows Tuomas to explore more of his imagination, without the previous limitations! If Tuomas can imagine it, Floor can give it life!
The best way to start the weekend, Floor, thank you! When it comes to pets, has Freja tried to ride on Fenris yet? I remember my daughter trying to ride my brother-in-law's dog (a Great Dane mix) when she was very young. And as an aside, I had a good laugh during the video a few weeks back when one of the kitties knocked something over and you just looked and said, "Ca-a-at!" in that fond-yet-exasperated tone. I've used that myself with my cats - I think it's universal to cat owners. (Or staff, as the cats surely think of us!)
Hi Floor, Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. I have one for you. Since I happen to be living with one, do you have any tips for the proper care and handling of Scandinavians? Groeten uit Nederland!
Hey Floor, let Hannes have a part of the shine & credits! After all, he does so much with the production of these videos, he deserves a little time in front of the camera! Ha,ha! My question about pets: Which one is Freja's & Hannes' favorite pet?
You waved to my kid after the last concert in Vancouver Canada! We were outside by the tour buses .My boy was so excited! Thank you very much! He got to shake Tuomas's hand! A great night we're so grateful! Vrolijk Kerstfeest!
Hi Floor! I love these little snippets of joy every Friday! I have a question for next week: what is a pet you love but never want to have? or just one you would never want in your house/on your propperty?
Poor Hannes - first he's blown up by a grenade, then shooed out of Fan Friday. I don't know what's worse, frankly 😂😂😂 But I do have a pet question: What was the very first pet you remember from your childhood? I really look forward to Fan Friday, it makes my week, even without Hannes in it 🤣
Lololol poor Hannes is right! Can’t catch a break whatsoever! He’s only married to the finest Dutch woman ever!!! He’s in a badass band, and his drum kit is a TANK!!! We can all tell who runs this household! The QUEEN!!!!
@@JustJenRx Hey JJ! Was just watching your reaction to Marco singing Like a Virgin at this very moment lol. And nope, he's definitely *not* impressed! But he's a great sport nonetheless :-) And yes, the Queen is very definitely the Queen in that house hehe. Hi Floor please pass on to Hannes my absolute appreciation for his band's "Christmas Truce" single... breathtaking video but more importantly inspiring story telling. Oh and your contribution at the end... as always not only beautiful but totally appropriate to the song.
Yes, I always say the secret to Nightwish's brilliance is the performance skills of the band: both Floor (and Tarja) and the other members, who are all excellent, and the song writing skills of Tuomas. I really can't think of anyone else who is as good as he is, in this or any other rock genre.
Thank you Floor & Hannes! What a good couple you are!💕 I love you humor and btw you look beautiful! Question: who takes care of all your pets when (if 🤪) touring starts? (I work full time, so unfortunately I do not have a pet. But when I retire I will definitely consider a dog or a cat! ) CU tomorrow !💕
I remember you used to have a cute little dog called Obi :) I'm glad you got to finally film the show in Amsterdam! I had a wonderful weekend in the Netherlands early 2020, just before the pandemic hit really. I remember reading about the virus on the train back to Sweden. I saw first Dimmu Borgir and Amorphis in 013 in Tilburg, and then you twice in Heerlen. It was a beautiful concert. Thank you! (I happened to sit beside a woman who revealed herself to be Bas Maas mother, of all people; we came to talk about After Forever, and she said she was his mum, and that she'd seen you perform many times, and that you were always something special :) I never saw AF live, but it was amazing hearing the songs from your whole career. I obviously don't know you at all, but I've been following your music for so many years, and I'm so darn proud of you, and happy for you. Just wanted to say.
I love how many youtubers have to use neon lights and scream and make weird faces to catch your attention for more than 10 seconds. Still you have like a real professional studio and you just have to speak to keep us interested because you actually know about what you're talking about.

So yes, in a way that was a flight.”
“So was music, by the way. When I heard that there was going to be a rock academy, I immediately registered.”
Were your parents surprised that you started doing this?
"I don't think so. I was also involved in musicals at school, so it didn't come out of the blue. I think they have kept their heart, because of course it is very insecure. But they have always been behind me. They said: 'You have a talent, you have to do something with it.' My father plays the guitar and sings. He's more in the blues corner. My sister Irene also sang in a metal band for a while and we also performed together. But I'm the only one in our family who made it her job."
Were you immediately into metal?
“I didn't really like it at all. A friend of mine was listening to it and I thought, what kind of horrible music is that? I was a little late developing my own taste. In the first school band I sang in, we played pop and rock songs. I also really liked grunge, but more to listen to. It wasn't until I moved to Limburg and made friends who listened to different metal bands that I saw the beauty of it. It's not just loud screaming and screeching guitars. The music we make with Nightwish has so many nuances, it's pop, folk, rock, symphonic passages, it's very accessible and melodic. For me, this kind of metal music is the ultimate combination of heavy music, pure feelings and female vocals.”
Metal music is a man's world, do you thrive on that?
“I don't really know any better. I stepped into this life from school. I actually don't realize that I work almost exclusively with men. It works well for me, I like it too. Men are very direct, there is no hassle. I never think: what is your hidden agenda? I do notice, now that I'm getting older, that I miss female company. Just because women look at things differently and that's sometimes a relief when you're only surrounded by men. That's why it was nice that at the time my female friend went along on tour as a nanny. I had very different conversations with her. She also saw when I was not feeling well and immediately asked how I was doing. Men don't ask that quickly, or don't even notice."
By joining 'Best Singers' you hoped that more people would listen to your music. Did that work?
"Yes. Our concerts in the Netherlands were immediately sold out. The nice thing is that it went both ways. A lot of people who listen to my music have also embraced Henk Poort. What I'm especially happy about is that I was able to show that metal isn't just satanic music, sung by screaming angry men."
Do you also think: finally known in the Netherlands?
“Haha. Somehow I like that, stupid huh? It bothered me that we are known all over the world and barely got a foothold in the Netherlands.”
Translated from an article in the Dutch magazine 'Flair' from May, 20, 2020 (Zangeres Floor Jansen biecht op aan Flair: ‘Ik vond metal vreselijke muziek’)

Love seing Hannes! Floor and Hannes are so cool and I love their complicity. So fuuny together. Thanks for this super fan friday. I am ready for the live stream tomorrow Take care !
Happy Friday!!! Hope everyone has a great day and an awesome weekend. Especially you, Floor!
Ok, you just made my Friday so much better! May I say, Nightwish as a whole, is genius! Lots of love to you and the family!
I love sabaton and nightwish and seeing them togheter is just fantastic
To become a genius in smth it's not enough to do it great, it's necessary to become that smth itself. Every master is an avatar of their art, and Tuomas is one with his. I'd say his brain is made of music, he thinks in music, he perceives the world in music. The transition is a sacrifice in some sense, but it provides a completely different angle of perception and cognition so the payoff is a whole new universe, which i consider pretty sufficient.
Hi, Floor and Hannes! 😃
Fan Friday!! A wonderful way to start the weekend. Tack så mycket ❤️
Stay safe.
Hahaha great episode of Fan Friday. I think it would be very cool if Hannes is featured in more episodes😁
PS Floor you look great😍
I was working but everything needs to be paused for Fan Friday so here I am. It's an important part of my week and I really look forward to this every week. Thank you for gifting us with these videos. We love you so much. 🤘
Poor Hannes, just wanted some attention. I love Floor but i'm on your side buddy! 💪🏻🤘🏻😂😁
Tanks Floor , Tanks Hannes beautiful couple...Hannes amazing drummer , Floor is the Queen..and Tuomas yes is a Genious composer the Metal.Mozart..
Leuk dat Hannes ff de show kwam stelen.. maar heel goed dat je het weer van je zelf maakt😘 Tuomas is een meester in wat hij doet en met jullie allemaal wordt het fenomenaal💋
Poor Hannes! Woah wait a minute… he’s the drummer for Sabaton , Married to Floor, Father to Freja and he has a tank!! I retract my pity ! 😛
Tuomas is a genius because when I listen his music I discover my soul . This is unbelievable for me 💜 I think universe is in NW songs .
Thank you Floor, for this great video, You are Goddess!❤️
I really love it when Ocean Floor talks about Ocean Soul’s passion for writing and making music ☺️♥️🌊✨
Yes Tuomas is a genius and thank you for bringing it to us Floor!
I have an animal question 🙋🏼♀️!!!! Okay if you could get one exotic animal, what would it be, and why?!!!
I have listened to most kinds of music in my 70 years. All kinds. To me Tuomas is one of the greatest composers out there today. Brilliant
Thanks for the answer Floor ! I wish a nice weekend to your family 🤘🏻💛
Love you Floor, can't wait for the next album! Much love from America!
Great fan Friday, as always. Loved the Hannes intro! You guys are really awesome!
Hi Floor,
Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. I have one for you. Since I happen to be living with one, do you have any tips for the proper care and handling of Scandinavians?
Groeten uit Nederland!
Loved seeing you and Hannes interacting. Maybe he could join u in front of the camera for fan Friday? 💕🤘🏾🇿🇦
Hey Floor, let Hannes have a part of the shine & credits! After all, he does so much with the production of these videos, he deserves a little time in front of the camera! Ha,ha! My question about pets: Which one is Freja's & Hannes' favorite pet?
Isn't that a bit like asking which is your favourite song? Doesn't it change over time, even from "interaction to interaction"? 😉
You waved to my kid after the last concert in Vancouver Canada! We were outside by the tour buses .My boy was so excited! Thank you very much! He got to shake Tuomas's hand! A great night we're so grateful! Vrolijk Kerstfeest!
What a funny intro 😂. Nice to see Hannes too. My weekend can’t start any better . Thank you Floor and Hannes👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🔥🎸🎤🎇💜
Tuomas is a genius because he picked you, Floor 🤘🤘🤘
I love you guys... Your music Is my medicine. Thank you from the Deep of my Heart ❤️
Now we need one of you and Tuomas on this channel 😁
Thank you Floor for let us see Hannes :D
Hi Floor! I love these little snippets of joy every Friday! I have a question for next week: what is a pet you love but never want to have? or just one you would never want in your house/on your propperty?
Fan friday has made my friday's so much more epic , thank you Floor!
But he's a great sport nonetheless :-)
And yes, the Queen is very definitely the Queen in that house hehe. And yes he certainly has a great life otherwise... heck, after marrying the Valkyrie Goddess, you've got anything you could possibly want 😂
Looking forward to seeing you and the rest of Nightwish for the 1st time at the Fillmore in Silver Spring. Already have my tickets for the show in May
Hi Floor please pass on to Hannes my absolute appreciation for his band's "Christmas Truce" single... breathtaking video but more importantly inspiring story telling.
Hi Floor, thx for another great Fan friday !! 🍷 Best wishes to Hannes, he deserves at least 10 seconds in every video 😁🥃 greetings from 🇨🇭🤘🤘 🙋♂️
HAAANNNES 🤘Christmas Truce is great😘. And Floor as always from the inside and outside simply beautiful
I remember you used to have a cute little dog called Obi :)
I'm glad you got to finally film the show in Amsterdam!
Thank you!
(I happened to sit beside a woman who revealed herself to be Bas Maas mother, of all people; we came to talk about After Forever, and she said she was his mum, and that she'd seen you perform many times, and that you were always something special :)
I never saw AF live, but it was amazing hearing the songs from your whole career. I obviously don't know you at all, but I've been following your music for so many years, and I'm so darn proud of you, and happy for you. Just wanted to say.
"he's actual storyteller" THAT'S EXACTLY WHY I'M STILL WAITING FOR HIS BOOK
Hannes is the sweetest.
How is this possible?
This woman looks more beautiful every week.
Share your secret with the rest of us mere mortal humans😅
I think it's the Valkyrie blood in her Vains.... And the daily windmilling
It's comes natural with age - my wife is 63 and stunning.. 😉
It's a Goddess thing !!
The secret is clap your hand before, answer.
I approve of your Wallace and Gromit reference.
Another great vid. 👍
Tuomas is a once in lifetime musical genius
People like Tuomas are here to make the world a better place in their own way. It appears that he is succeeding.
I love how many youtubers have to use neon lights and scream and make weird faces to catch your attention for more than 10 seconds. Still you have like a real professional studio and you just have to speak to keep us interested because you actually know about what you're talking about.
For me it's the versatility. Between NW/Scrooge/Auri he adapts well to different styles. Writes outstanding melodies.
Hi Hannes, Floor and you both have loads of fans, this is a 2 in 1 fan friday. Tuomas is indeed unique, not only NW but also AURI. But I do find time to listen to Sabaton and discover their hidden acting talents. Will there ever be a music video in which Fenris will be acting?
Love you Floor and All the nightwish crew. Yall rock so hard. Much love from Canada
Omg!!! MUSTA LAATTA!!!! You made Floor’s Fan Friday!!!!
Ya Just Jen I nearly spit my coffee out. But 'cause I'm stingy I wanted to save my laptop!
😁 💜 🤘
i love when Floor makes her makeup black and that huge contrast when she opens her eyes wide
It’s so good to see our girl on fan Fridays. Have a good one everyone 🤘
Thank you for this wonderful fan friday😀💖
You and your husband have so freaking much talent between you two, a Nightwish and Sabaton tour would be absolutely amazing to have in the US!
So now the weekend can begin! Hope it's a nice one for you all!
More Hannes! 👏
You are a great couple.
Your humor, along with EVERYTHING else you are, is wonderful! ✨
Question: Do your pets eat/sleep/ toilet at the same time!
Or, do they all have different schedules and wake you up at different times?
Tuomas is a legend
