This song was written and originally recorded by Bob Dylan in 1973 as part of the soundtrack to the movie "Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid". Guns and Roses does a great job with it. Alsi check out: "November Rain", "Paradise City", "Don't Cry", "Patience", "You Could Be Mine" and "Welcome To The Jungle ".

@@506thLittleberry Really? I remember a small artist back in the early '90s going around doing signing for a book she'd written that was supposed to tell the story of what inspired her to right the song. The first part of the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert was the band singing songs from their album during the first half, except for Extreme, who sang a Queen medley before ending with their song, More Than Words. Guns n Roses sang Paradise City, followed by this song, and Def Leppard ended with a Queen cover, bringing out Brian May to accompany them. What was really cool was Phil Collins playing his set at Wembley Stadium in London, getting on the Concorde and flying to Philadelphia and playing drums on 3 songs with Eric Clapton at JFK Stadium for Live Aid. I started watching that Saturday morning, and watched about all day and into the evening.
I’d start there (live aid 1985) since you are looking at which Freddie Mercury stuff to try. It gives a look at “Peak Freddie” while he works the crowds. He dings a medley of hits too, so there’s a lot going on. It’s the perfect showcase of the man. There’s more, but this is where I’d start. Not bob geldof on guitar, but he DID call Queen’s set at live aid the best one. They are guns & roses + extra musicians. Synthesizers were not ready to do that kind of work in real time. @@daz97, On the albums in both don't cry (original) & don't cry (alt version), Axl sings mostly with his lower register. The higher notes are mostly Shannon Hoon. Only in the second part of the songs Axl uses his higher pitch. I love all of Axl's vocal abilities. so awesome :)

My brother was GenX and he was more into Guns'n'Roses than I was. In fact I used to lump then in with all the other "80's hair bands". Not knocking their talent at all, I just was never into their music. But this is a great rendition of Dylan's song. The double neck guitar is cool too. The top neck is a 12 string, while the lower neck is 6. Another great reaction!
Happy Wednesday Diane! I've heard a few different covers of this song, but this version is pretty cool! You sure know how to pick what songs to listen and react to! Good choices! Also, I'm pretty much a film buff myself! I don't have a degree in it, but I have seen enough movies in my life to be able to understand and appreciate the fine art of cinema.. Thank you for sharing this video and as always Diane, have a perfect week and see ya again soon! Be well! 👋😎👍🎉🎊♥️
I love the Eric Clapton version. Still, this was a very touching version considering the context of the concert. Glad you finally got to release the vid from the RUclips jail. Chewie for President- all the way!😊
The intro played on the 12-string was from Alice Coopers Welcome to My Nightmare album. The hit song Only Women Bleed. It then transitions into Dylan classic when he switched to the 6-string on the lower neck.
The very first melody Slash was playing, and the first few lines Axel sang while sitting were from an Alice Cooper song called "Only Women Bleed." Then the broke into the "Knocking on Heaven's Door" cover.
I've heard the Bob Dylan version, as well as the Eric Clapton version. The Guns N' Roses version is what most folks are familiar with these days. Fun Fact: GNR had a song (Welcome to the Jungle) on the least Dirty Harry movie: The Dead Pool (1988). The group has been around that long. Other suggested songs would be Welcome to the Jungle and Paradise City. Some good Queen tunes include We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions.
Paul Simon has some good songs. I like the song He does with Chevy Chase called You Can Call Me Al. Slip Slidein Away and Kodachrome are good ones too.
Gibson EDS-1275. 12 string on the top and 6 string underneath. Still being made today although Slash’s is from 1966. It’s actually black but the lights made it look blue.
I would highly recommend another performance from that same concert of the Queen song. Under pressure And Bohemian Rhapsody with Axel Rose and Elton John. INJOY😊
Well, the song was written by Bob Dylan for a movie, but I think Eric Clapton's version was the most well known. I never knew Gun's and Roses had a version, and apparently a lot of others. I'm guess because I'm a fan of Clapton, his and Dylan's are the only versions I think of. So learning with Miss Diane once again.
Pretty sure that was Duff McKagan, the bassist. I believe he has Irish cousins from Cork. I think the Clapton version played at the end of Lethal Weapon 2.
For some reason, they started the song out with the 1st four lines of Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed" and then dropped it and went into Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door". Very strange.
Since you mention the affinity (thank you) many first responders have for the song allow me to relate a very short story. In 1990 six firefighters on a crew I worked closely with lost their lives on a forest fire in Arizona. This is the song that was played at their memorial service. I think this is the first time I've listened to it since.
My Girls have now opened for Guns and roses 5 times. They had to decline one as they were invited to The MTV music awards. They are 3 sisters from Mexico called The Warning. Wish you would listen to them.
I listen to this song differently than most, I wore a badge for 39 years, it was a very dark world and I knocked on heavens door many times! Edit: I should have watched to the end before I commented. Good video as usual!
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is a song by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, written for the soundtrack of the 1973 film Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Released as a single two months after the film's premiere, it became a worldwide hit, reaching the Top 10 in several countries.
Try listening to Gun N Roses Songs. Welcome To the Jungle, It's so Easy, Paradise City, Sweet Child O Mine, You Could Be Mine, Live and Let Die, Nighttrain, Yesterday, Patience, One in a Million
This is a Rock in Roll band formed in Los Angeles in 1985, an icon of Rock in roll AxI Rose,Slash, Duff Mckagan,Richard fortus, Frank ferrer,Dizzy Reed, Melissa Reese, his successes made him know worldwide,.
Guns N' Roses' performance of 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992 was truly iconic, showcasing their powerful rendition of the classic song. A little-known fact is that Axl Rose, the lead singer, wore a kilt during this performance as a tribute to Freddie Mercury, who was known for his flamboyant stage presence. It was a subtle yet meaningful gesture that added a unique touch to the memorable tribute event.
If you like crowd participation, you should totally watch Queen's Live Aid performance or their Montreal concert. Also, there's a video out there of a crowd waiting for a Green Day concert to begin where the entire crowd sings Bohemian Rhapsody word for word. I love it 😊
Ok, since you asked, OMG YES! Check out Queen! They are one of the most iconic rock bands ever! You will probably recognize a number of songs, but their repertoire is quite vast! No two songs were the same with them. And, you will definitely appreciate their theatricality.
Everyone from Guns N' Roses to Eric Clapton have attempted to make the song their own. In fact, there are over 150 covers in existence. Originally written & performed by Bob Dylan.
Patti Smith was a backup singer for Bruce Springsteen. They ended up getting married and had three children. They are still married. Patti did go on to a solo singing career, and almost made it into top 10 of Billboards hot 100 (only made it to #50 on the UK top singles chart).
Freddie was a legend of rock, I still mist up thinking about him , I was at a Tom petty concert and they played heavens door and axl came onstage with Tom to sing this famous song , I think g n r did the best cover, check out queen at live aid in 1985 they brought the house down , new york
Love to see you check out more Queen. Queen's performance at Live Aid 1985 Wembley Stadium (about 22 minutes) really shows Freddie's command of the audience.
Definitely check out more on Freddie. As far as I know, he never really had a solo career, it was with Queen until his tragic death from Aids related pneumonia. He was famously private about his personal life, partly because he was bisexual/gay which was still pretty taboo at the time, but also because, underneath the flamboyant persona, he was very quiet and introverted. Personally I would recommend Bohemian Rhapsody, as I think it does justice to despite the considerable artistic licence. Rami Malek's performance as Freddie was amazing. For a little more context on the concert, he kept his Aids secret from the public, though there was speculation in the media about the possibility. he only confirmed it in a press release that came out the day after his death. The band mates took the chance to raise real awareness about the disease and funds for research. Many huge names performed, both their songs and Queen's. So , to be clear, no this wasn't Freddie's song
Freddie Mercury is arguably the best pop singer that ever lived in the modern age (not taking opera into account). I prefer this version of this song, a Bob Dylan cover as others have said, because I play and love electric guitar. But I mean, with a band, it's not just about the 'talent' of one member. It's like, my favorite guitar player of all time is Vito Bratta from White Lion, but White Lion is far from my favorite band because I don't think the song writing/lyrics are up to par much of the time - they're not bad, but for me they generally don't take it to that next level. But the guitar work, in White Lion songs, is definitely next level/of the highest level. My favorite band is not the one I feel was the most talented/technical, because music is a feeling and it speaks to us all differently. My favorite singer is the late Ronnie James Dio, and Dio (his band) is my favorite band. And I won't argue that they were 'better'. But they are 'my favorite', and no one can argue with that. Guns 'n' Roses were a great band though. And I love Slash's guitar work.
Hi Diane! Bob Dylan actually wrote this song. I have not seen this movie, but it looks good. And yes, Rami Malek won an Oscar for playing Freddie Mercury. Happy Weird Wednesday, Boop!

Hi Diane and Ya'll how's your day going?❤👋
Friday I'm in Love 👍
This performance will be 32 years old tomorrow!! Today is April 19th 2024❤
Eric Clapton also did a version of this song.
Congrats on reaching 250K subs Diane!🎉 I look forward to watching your GNR reaction later. 😊
Thank you!! 😊
Sounds the same live as on the radio, thats pretty impressive
It's strange but it's like when I watch 2 different live versions of don't cry
One he sings clean and low
The other he sing high and growling
I then noticed on the CD he actually sings both lines lol
Dunno why I replied to you with this but whatever lol ✌️
@@daz97, On the albums in both don't cry (original) & don't cry (alt version), Axl sings mostly with his lower register. The higher notes are mostly Shannon Hoon. Only in the second part of the songs Axl uses his higher pitch.
I love all of Axl's vocal abilities. so awesome :)
@@kerenolivero7097
True
But producing a studio album never has one layer for the lead vocalist, they are always doubled up on albums ✌️
@@daz97, Correct. Axl has done his own back up vocals on some songs, his fellow band members have done back up vocals, and friends of the band did too :) I was only commenting on don't cry, which you had mentioned earlier :)
Today is Floral Design Day. A Great Day to enjoy some flowers and make designs with flowers.
If interested in checking out Patti Smith, "Because The Night" is the song she is most famous for.
That is such a great observation about the guitar! So cool and talented
Gen X here and same. Plus, there was that whole issue with Axl and racism
Be well! 👋😎👍🎉🎊♥️
Thank you! You too!
That opening is an Alice Cooper song.
Hey Diane glad to see you listening to more good music
Did you hear about the glass blower who accidentally inhaled? He got stomach pane.
😂😂😂
I ❤ Guns N Roses
Enjoyed learning today with You on the learning journey. I did not know the songs was written about sheriffs and Billy the kid.
I love youre segments after the videos its always a learning experience thanks Diane
I’m so glad! Thanks for saying that
I love the Eric Clapton version. Still, this was a very touching version considering the context of the concert.
Glad you finally got to release the vid from the RUclips jail.
Chewie for President- all the way!😊
Thankee! Yeah the context made it extra special 😊
"Youth is wasted on the young!"
Happy Weird Wednesday! I really love this video.
That blue guitar looks amazing 🎸
I love it!
Gibson EDS-1275. 12 string on the top and 6 string underneath. Still being made today although Slash’s is from 1966. It’s actually black but the lights made it look blue.
Thanks for rocking on heaven's door Diane!
I would highly recommend another performance from that same concert of the Queen song. Under pressure And Bohemian Rhapsody with Axel Rose and Elton John. INJOY😊
Axel’s vocal range is insane.
I like slashes dual neck guitar. Slash is a really good guitarist that have played lots of concerts and with other music artists around the world.
I didn't know Diane has a brother! Learn something new everyday 😄
That’s great to hear. I definitely never even knew Bob Dylan saying it! Maybe I should check it out version?
Pretty sure that was Duff McKagan, the bassist. I believe he has Irish cousins from Cork. I think the Clapton version played at the end of Lethal Weapon 2.
Sure who doesn’t have cousins from Cork?! 😉
If memory serves, Bob Dylan wrote it, and Eric Clapton had a huge hit with it
Yes, and a much much better version.
For some reason, they started the song out with the 1st four lines of Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed" and then dropped it and went into Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door". Very strange.
This song also gives rise to Heaven's Door Distillery, which puts out some really fantastic whiskies.
Thank you, Diane. You listen and pay attention. Don't interrupt too much. And, you do your research. I hope you enjoy many more things to discover.
Since you mention the affinity (thank you) many first responders have for the song allow me to relate a very short story. In 1990 six firefighters on a crew I worked closely with lost their lives on a forest fire in Arizona. This is the song that was played at their memorial service. I think this is the first time I've listened to it since.
Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the few that is top notch. Well worth watching.
Axle roses does have that unique voice everyone knows. You hear his voice Your like that's Axle. He's a Good Singer.
It’s definitely signature
@@DianeJennings For sure, there earlier albums were the most popular, imo. There like timeless jams of the 80s and 90s.
My Girls have now opened for Guns and roses 5 times. They had to decline one as they were invited to The MTV music awards. They are 3 sisters from Mexico called The Warning. Wish you would listen to them.
The warning are fantastic. Pau rest easy on those drums they never harmed you. Lol
@@kevinford6372Pau beats those drums like they owe her money.
The original artist Bob Dylan with Robert Plant and Willie Nelson go on tour this summer. Tickets go on sale March 1st 24
Wow!
I listen to this song differently than most, I wore a badge for 39 years, it was a very dark world and I knocked on heavens door many times! Edit: I should have watched to the end before I commented. Good video as usual!
Great video Diane, love these❤
The opening that Slash is playing and Axl is singing is Alice Cooper's " Only Women Bleed".
Thank you I never could figure out what that was from. GnR one of my top 5 favorite bands. This my favorite live performances. ❤❤❤
You mentioned Queen songs. I listened to Queen in the 70s and 80s. Two of my favourite songs are Radio Ga Ga, and I Want To Break Free.
That intro was from the Alice Cooper song, Only Women Bleed, it's definitely worth doing a reaction to itself. Alice was the original Shock Rocker.
The opening guitar thing was "Only Women Bleed" by Alice Cooper.
This is a Rock in Roll band formed in Los Angeles in 1985, an icon of Rock in roll AxI Rose,Slash, Duff Mckagan,Richard fortus, Frank ferrer,Dizzy Reed, Melissa Reese, his successes made him know worldwide,.
Great performance from gun's and roses 🌹 Freddy would be proud
You should watch the whole Freddie Mercury Tribute show, you will love it
0:43 bro Jennings is a man of good taste😂 Diane’s original loud neighbour
Accurate
@@DianeJenningslol, just the last part accurate, or all of it? 😅
I use to know the great great nephew of Pat Garrett.
When I hear someone doesn't know Queen, I feel like the world is doomed.
The movie about Freddy Mercury was wonderful and definitely worth a watch!
Saw Guns at their peak and Axl was one of the best front men ever back then when he had his voice.
Bohemian Rhapsody is a fantastic movie and you should definitely watch it
Freddie was a legend of rock, I still mist up thinking about him , I was at a Tom petty concert and they played heavens door and axl came onstage with Tom to sing this famous song , I think g n r did the best cover, check out queen at live aid in 1985 they brought the house down , new york
Diane is back for more
Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door
Sung by Axl Rose
Who was there for the pose 🌚
Love to see you check out more Queen. Queen's performance at Live Aid 1985 Wembley Stadium (about 22 minutes) really shows Freddie's command of the audience.
100% absolutely have to check out Queen!!!
I believe bob Dylan was the original composer for knockin on heavens door
Absolutely. The best!
Guns and roses made great cover songs! Try their version of Paul McCartney's "Live or let die". It is amazing!
Definitely check out more Queen. Freddie Mercury was amazing as a singer and a showman.
Hi Diane! Bob Dylan actually wrote this song. I have not seen this movie, but it looks good. And yes, Rami Malek won an Oscar for playing Freddie Mercury. Happy Weird Wednesday, Boop!
It’s always the biopics that get the Oscars 🏆
Diane great job with your reaction and thoughts on this version of Knocking On Heaven Door from Guns and Roses done at the concert for life aka The Freddie Mercury show . The correct way to spell GNR lead singer name is Axl Rose . The introduction that you hear in the beginning the interments is from the song is Only Women Bleed from Alice Cooper
If you watch Bohemian Rapsody, you can also watch the youtube videos comparing the movie and Live Aid performance. They are almost identical.
I love Guns N' Roses music.
7:51 probably why we don’t have Axle Rose sing alongs😂
Love your booping to the tracks you are reviewing ! Major kudos ! Music appreciation should have been so much fun in HS ! Love the reviews ! From upstate in NY. , yes original Woodstock mud country !
That double necked guitar was interesting. This is the version of the song that I'm familiar with.
I'll check out the website, but I've got some pretty thick hair as it is. 🧔
You do! Fine mane of hair
If you can ever find a full version of this concert, get it. Unfortunately, due to copyright issues you may not be able to get some performances. It was amazing.
