Girl on stage right is a Rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist so don’t expect solos from her. They aren’t a metal band. She’s the band founder and lyricist... and only started learning how to play the guitar from the girl on stage left, AFTER the band was formed. Trial by fire... their schedule has been so tight she has literally been learning and improving on stage.
Their personalities added to their great music is What attracts and retains fans’ loyalty. Totally different genre from Lovebites though. So there are fans who love both and fans who love one over the other.

Miku is working hard and advancing. In the new MV of "Manners" she even gets a very short guitar solo. A sign of things to come, I think.
She also does some screams and growls! in that one.
And she does have a couple of vocal solos they insert sometimes in a concert to give Saiki a vocal break, including a cute and sexy little number "Rock in Me."
Also she does maid cafe patter, talks about being an 810 year old pigeon, lots more, lots of Band-Maid lore engages the fans.

Welcome aboard, David. You are embarking on (along with many others - 100 million YT views!) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (over a 100 songs with their latest album, “Unseen World”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destine for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular.
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: ruclips.net/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/видео.html Their later songs on Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, and Just Bring It drive even more - Manners, Different, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts! And many are represented with over 30 well produced music videos. ruclips.net/user/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE concerts such as Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (“Domination” ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids. Here’s three of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. The first taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: ruclips.net/video/__1th7ctgMo/видео.html, the second taken by JT Dayo in LA: ruclips.net/video/4uIYBkAybCI/видео.html, and third, JOSER8845 in LA: ruclips.net/video/usWZvlGGDSs/видео.html. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
Band-Maid members are: (Ages are best est.).
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements, melodies and High Priestess mediator between the Gods (Band Members) and the masters and princesses (Fans). At 26 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Leader) as Miku calls her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away the persona. Her charisma, performance and voice focus the experience.
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 29 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kurrupo! No, no, no… KURRUPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Naw-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 29 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 30 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Assassin" - Bass, 28 years old. A sullen, barefoot, dark spirit driving her 5-string bottom-end to hell and back, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. The Mysterious One literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

    some names for you
    Kanami - lead guitarist, composer
    Akane - Drummer (Gorilla)
Miku - back up singer, rhythm guitarist, lyrics writer with Kanami (small pigeon)
    Misa - bassist (barefoot assassin)
Saiki - lead singer (ice queen)
Their live videos are some of the best. They love playing with each other (which is rare) and the love playing for the crowd

  • @TomClark-Futoura

A thing about the "Gap" - Miku, and later the whole band, wanted to show that cute "Kawaii" girls (dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling without even breaking a sweat) could rock as hard as any guy band (sweating all over their so called, hip street / grunge clothes and making it look like what they're doing -- their "art" -- is so painful and hard)... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done!
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working all too well. Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. They are considered by many as the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

Pretty much 90 percent of Japanese bands have a look, or "gimmick", no different from the Beatles wearing their suits, the Ramones in their ripped jeans and leather jackets, Judas Priest with all their studded leather and all that. Or for more extreme examples, KISS, Alice Cooper, Slipknot, or whatever. The hair metal bands had their schtick, Angus Young had his, Motorhead, Cheap Trick, etc...etc....The "just got home from work and woke up from a nap" look that's popular in the West (ie "grunge") is not as predominate in Japanese music, thankfully, 'cos I hate going to see bands who just look like they're wearing whatever clothes they could scrape off the bedroom floor because tomorrow's laundry day. Probably because I'm a photographer, so visuals are important to me, not just the music. I'm into the music mostly, but I'm also into the overall presentation. I liked when I was younger and bands looked like bands, and in Japan most of them still do. But shit, I forgot what I was going to say when I started typing.....well, one thing I'll say is that Akane is one of the most dynamic drummers you will ever see. You'll know what I mean after checking out more of their stuff. Oh, I remember! I was going to say that Lovebites and Band-Maid really have nothing in common. They're both all-female bands from Japan, but then so are hundreds of other bands. Stylistically tehy're completely different. Band-Maid are much close to classic Japanese rock bands like The Yellow Monkey, or even American bands like Cheap Trick, hard rock with a strong pop sensibility. Lovebites are thrash/power metal who have more in common with Maiden and Slayer than with Japanese bands. But I get why people who aren't so familiar with Japanese music would be tempted to make a comparison even though it's pretty much like comparing Nickelback to Rush because both bands are all-male and Canadian. I'll stop before I end up writing a book.

    • @THEDavidHeretic
      @THEDavidHeretic  3 года назад +20

Nah write away it's all good and it's all accurate. I couldn't agree more with everything you said, especially about appreciating the visual. It's why KISS is to this day one of my favorite bands. TRUST ME....it's not because of their music. Even Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have gone on record in several interviews saying that their music is bubblegum buttrock....but it's simple to relate to and easy to remember, which leaves the door wide open for the visual spectacle of their live shows. I hate it when bands show up onstage and you can't tell if they're the actual band or the roadies....they're all dressed the same. I wear some pretty interesting stuff on stage when we perform, we all do. It's all visual and eye-catching. Gimmick? Kinda....except we're not all wearing the exact same style. I wear more spikes that anyone else in the band, our viola player wears a shiny black latex trenchcoat and rocks some ridiculous heels, one of our guitar players wears a shirt with one long sleeve and no sleeve on the other arm, but has leather bands on his wrist and elbow on that sleeveless arm....it's just all about putting on a show in every aspect, including the visual. So yeah, totally agree with you.

@@THEDavidHeretic - about visuals, Japanese Visual Kei is a form of glam rock and metal. Some interesting bands there. I especially like Exist-Trace. They are all female but play with gender bending styles, play any genre they damn well please or a fusion or none. The lead singer Jyou is as distinctive in her own way as Saiki of Band-Maid is in hers, instrument work is high level, overall they've held a place in my musical heart and music collection for some time, right behind Band-Maid who are my #1. Although I must say here, nobody drums like Akane! She's a freakin' locomotive driving Band-Maid's sound.

This is my take on their costumes. Judas Priest wore gay-club outfits, Motrley Crüe wore spandex, Kiss wore....well...they were Kiss, Rammstein...well...they are Rammstein, Shitno...err...I mean Slipknot were make, Manwar wear fur and speedos, Alice Cooper used make-up, Marilyn Manson...well...was Marilyn Manson. The list of rock and metal-acts that had a schtick is endless. In Japan they had the visual key movement were things were extravagant and beautiful. A maid costume isn't really that far out there. They've called the maid outfits their battle armor. When they put them on first timers don't expect this music and gets an even bigger surprise.
In all honestly it's almost necessary to have something to set you apart from all the other bands visually in Japan. There are just so incredibly many band of crazy talented musicians that talent alone might not be enough. They would probably never have made as much media as they have if wasn't for the "gap". It's kind of the same that every Japanese band that has toured abroad calls it a world tour as a marketing thing. If that tour was 400 people in a dingy rock-club doesn't matter. They are after all a Japanese band that has to break through the noice in the Japanese entertainment industry. Doing that takes a lot more than pure musical talent.

I grew up on classic rock, this is my favorite band now. Kanami, lead guitarist is one of my fav all time guitarists. Try their live instrumental Onset. Kanamis influences are Carlos Santana, Larry Carlton, EVH. Jimmy Page caught them in Tokyo, and did a photo with drummer Akane, calling her one of best drummers since Bonham. The maid outfits they think of as their armor. It's an image, with their stage setups, chandeliers, light stands. It's not a gimmick, as Rythum guitarist Miku, worked in a maid cafe in Tokyo, where tourists take in. She found how folks loved it. So she thought, what if you heard something incredible, and it caught you by surprise.
But yeah, Onset, really showcases their talent. Puzzle is brilliant, more riffs in it then other bands have in multiple songs. Moratorium, great crowd interactions.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg! Think that song times 50! All of their live stuff is fantastic. Even some of the fancams are pretty cool. I'm a middle aged guy that has heard a lot of different stuff, and I think they are the best rock band in the world today! I recommend for live: Play and Freedom, for MV my favs are Dice, Different, Manners (the new one that just came out), and Secret My Lips.

They are writing the songs on their own, mainly Kanami (lead guitar) and writing the lyrics too... Miku (backvocals, lead guitar and former of the band)
Have fun, discover them more, it´s a deep pigeon hole and it rocks and is fun as hell!

One of the greatest live bands on the planet. You're right in saying "great show"...there's a lot of videos on their channel from this concert. 20+ song list of non stop rocking enjoyment, I believe this particular song was the 22nd of the night? Which tells you something they still have that kind of energy after playing for two hours.

Nice! This band is blowing up Reaction channels this year, but it really is the best when that reactor is honest and especially if they can explain why they liked something specific. You caught Misa's move with the pick and Akane's super clean fills and change ups. Most do not.
Tons of comments with info and suggestions. Enjoy!

Welcome to the world of these very talented ladies. They are a phenomenal band as you just witnessed. There are a lot of very talented rock groups from Japan that people are just starting to discover and recognize recently. However, out of all of them, Band-Maid stand out of the crowd. They are in the league of their own. Their musicianship, showmanship, composition and song writing is absolutely top tier. They are just a top notch band that should be more popular than they are. Hopefully, if word spread more, they will get the global recognition that they deserve. Thanks for the reaction and if you like this one I guarantee you will not be disappointed in the rest of their Discography. There is a lot to choose from, including songs from their latest album, Unseen World, which is shaping out to be one of their best releases to date. Make sure to check out more of their music. 🤘

Everyone who loves this band is pushing it constantly. There are a lot of great all female bands out of Japan but Band Maid is by far my favorite. THEY DO NOT HAVE A BAD SONG. Their MVs are fine but where they really shine is live. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame went to one of their shows and was so impressed with Akane (the drummer, aka Gorilla) that he wanted to meet her back stage and did. Miku, Rhythm GTR, started the band with the idea of the gap between what was visible as opposed to the type of music they wanted to play. The look is based on Japanese Maid Cafes where she worked at one time. She contacted Kanami (Lead GTR) who contacted Akane (drums) who contacted Misa (Bass and by the way, she's referred to as the Silent Assassin because she very rarely talks. She also plays barefoot and drinks whiskey or beer during performances.) Miku was originally going to be the singer but she demoted herself because she didn't feel her voice was strong enough and their management set them up with Saiki (Voice) who they felt was able to push the sound that was desired. Their very first MV was Thrill and that got so many "what did I just watch?" reactions they were off and running. They didn't write their own music at first but for the last three or four albums it's been pretty much them. Kanami writes the music with the others putting in their musical input and Miku writes the lyrics. Saiki is the quality control. They just put out their newest album HIDDEN WORLD and although it has some more traditional sounding things on it there are parts that are almost speed metal only better. I think Kanami is a musical genius because no two songs are alike.
I hope you continue on this journey because I can guarantee you won't be sorry. If you really want to hear Akane on drums watch FREEDOM from this same live show. This show is great but I don't like the mix nearly as well as Zep Tokyo 2018. Enjoy.
By the way, anybody ever tell you you look a little like Mick Box of Uriah Heep? Just saying. LOL

Glad you liked it. Happy to have given you the recommendation. Welcome to the wonderful world of Band Maid. I grew up in the 80s and listened to all the well known rock bands and at the present time my favorite band is Band Maid. Kanami (lead guitar) is actually Miku's guitar teacher (rhythm guitar/backing vocals). Miku never played guitar before. Miku who started band was supposed to be lead singer but didn't think her voice was strong enough to sing the types of songs she wanted band to play. So she fired herself and hired Saiki to sing. If you like Akane on drums check out their song "Freedom" Akane has a extended drum solo on that. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/видео.html

Sort of like when they compare Bonham and Paice or Led and Deep Purple, Clapton vs Page vs Beck (yardbirds) etc. Back in the late 60s and 70s we had our favs but Yes vs ELP or Rush vs Cream was just us admitting we liked them all and whatever mood we were in we just listened to them all lol. Great, great, great band! Band-Maid and The Warning are my favorite bands. Girls saving rock music!

First time here, great react! Next you can react to "Blooming" music video. They'll knock you down with rock then pick you up and kiss you with some of the best harmonies around, awesome tune. Glad you picked up on MISA and her switching from pick to slap, you're on it. I have this DVD concert and it's wonderful! Even "Miku's Magic Time" is fun, as always. This is song 23 of their 24 song concert and no lack of energy. BTW- Miku (Zemaitis rhythm guitar) worked for several years at a Japanese Maid Cafe and she is the founder of this band, great back story here since she never played guitar until she stepped down as lead singer for Saiki's pipes......Harumph!

I wouldn't say one band is better than another in the case of Lovebites and Band-Maid. I would say it's a preference on the type of genre you like. If you like heavy metal, Lovebites is your band. If you like hard rock, Band-Maid is the choice. Band-Maid is my favorite and likely has the broader appeal but I can appreciate Lovebites' undeniable talents.

Yeah, maids in Japan! I'm watching these girls about four years now and i think first reaction of everyone of us was pretty similar. And yes, they totally don't rely on their outfit but it really is one of the most outstanding recognition marks we can see i guess. When you see a guy with a stovepipe hat and a guitar you immediately know it can be only one, right? Same kind of uniqueness here. World Domination really seems to be the authorized claim of theses ladies. But you know what? Just one day ago i saw a band i haven't heard before and for the first time it was comparable somehow to the maids in a different way and they really stuck on me - Lovebites! xD

Totally agree, gimmicks adds a lot to the value of the product, even though it’s already huge.

This was my first time ever hearing of and listening to a song by this band, and maid gimmick aside they performed well, and like you said while the gimmick does help them stand out they don't need it or overly rely on it, which is where I think the criticisms with gimmick bands come from (I'm not used to listening to gimmick bands so this is just my guess).

Cool i found you react also to Band - Maid, my second favourite band :). They are hard rock, meanwhile Lovebites are more Power Metal. This contrast "what i see- what i hear", its what i like, in these bands: cute, kawaii, princesses, talented and badasses.

Yeah this is a tight rock band created by the rhythm guitarist and back up vocalist Miku. She used to work at a Japanese maids cafe and thought it would be cute to start a band with this concept. So she found the lead guitarist Kanami, she knew, Akane the drummer, she knew Misa the bassist from music school and that's the beginning. But Miku said her vocals weren't cool enough and found Saiki the as lead vocals.
About Akane the drummer, Jimmy Page saw their concert and ask to meet Akane, she couldn't believe it, she thought it was a prank.

you have reacted to the best band in the world now...!!! Jimmy Page saw them live in Japan and after the show went backstage and wanted to meet Akane, claiming that she is the best drummer he's ever seen! If Jimmy Page says that you are the best there is, I don't know what more I can say. Akane first thought that the member of staff was making a silly prank, but thereafter Jimmy shows up asking her for a photo...! How cool is that?!)))

After a few songs you no longer notice the maid costumes. You are too involved in trying to understand how someone's fingers and hands can move that fast :-D
