Definitely earned a sub from me. Not because you gave my current favorite band a good score, but because you clearly know your craft. I often feel like Band-Maid's music is squarely aimed at musicians. They aren't the flashiest band in the world by any means, or the most mainstream, but their musicality is off the charts and they always include those little details that make a musician's ears perk up. Love these girls.
Great reaction! Glad that you notice MISA. She is something special. Both Saiki and Miku do their vocals in the recording. The guitar parts are all done by Kanami alone. This has been officially clarified by the band members. Miku has a distinctive voice, which are at times very noticable. Especially when it comes to high pitch yeahs and other vocal gymnastics.
I believe that Saiki (the lead singer) is doing her parts and Miku (the backing vocalist and sometimes second vocalist) is doing the backup parts and they harmonize together. However, the guitar parts (lead and rhythm) are done by Kanami (the lead guitarist) because she writes the music so she already knows how to play them and it's a time saving for recording the tracks. Miku learn her parts later and play live without any issue
What you hear is because of Kanami and her music writing and how she is able to give each member something to work with. Then they all add their own interpretation to the overall composition. Because they are all so good they come up with a new "twist" on tried and true rock formulas.
The thing I like about these ladies is that they are not stuck in one groove. Every song is different with something new in it with that patent Band Maid energy, some nuance that will stand out. I'm not a base player but Misa's inventive bass runs are a treat, never over whelming but so innovative and always impressive. This is not taking away from what the other 4 are doing in the least. I gotta say, Akane has got to be the happiest drummer in the world! I love her smile as much as what se does. Great review Dave, looking to the next one!
I suppose if you listen to band maid as much as the majority of us it'd be easier to recognise the difference between Saikis' and miku's vocals, you then realise how much Miku is in the recording. and how much her vocals add to their songs.
I have been in the music business a while myself and can honestly say that somewhere between ninety to ninety five percent of what you hear are from Saiki doing leads and Miku doing backup and harmonies with very little if any layering. They do on occasion use backing tracks but I believe they are mostly instrumental. Synths and keyboards and such. If you listen to original recorded non processed tracks by them it is amazingly similar. The reason they stand apart is that each member is crazy talented.
Imho, the best hard rock band around and probably for the last 30-40 years or so. Fantastic musicians, fantastic vocalist, fantastic song writers...they've got it all.
I found this song pretty much my top favorites. Lots things going on, great little and bigger details, not overmuch anything, skill shots from each, absolutely fancy voc & bg voc, cool surprises such as ending. For me this hits to the bulls eye!

I like every member of Band Maid, my main focus is on Misa (bass), she has exactly this ability that you described to play the right thing at the right time, she can support every instrument in a targeted manner, she always finds her spot, she can also do a song absolutely dominate and lead. In a band you want a bass player like that. Misa has also created a mysterious alter ego. and this endless coolness 😎😏. Each band member is truly unique. Such a good song!!! MISA the bass player tends to be a highlight for a lot of people, she is fantastic! The more you listen to them the more you appreciate how truly fantastic this band is. You're perfectly right about Misa - even if she ventures a lot into the embellishment/ornementation zone, she never forget her role as backbone of the song. How she manage it remains a bit of a mystery to me though.
Not just Misa - the whole friggin' band is good at that. Take Akane. Her style is very "busy" which is usually a bad thing but her choices just make it work so well for the music. Overplaying without overplaying is a big part of their unique musical chemistry.
David.....vocally both Saiki AND Miku (rhyme guitar, red flower, twin tails) are very talented singers....in the beginning of the band, they shared singing duties. However, Saiki has the more powerful voice, Miku has the more versatile voice hitting both low and high notes....when they both harmonize it's hard to tell the voices apart they sound that close......thanks for the review...love and peace from 🇨🇦

Great react :-) It's Miku doing the vocals - her voice is different enough to pick it clearly if you know the band well. They have played it live and it sounds unchanged live.
Hate to be that guy who says 'actually', but actually Miku (background singer) war the original lead singer of the band, so while Siaki is a real power house, Miku is more than capable of doing the background parts, and her vocals are a lot like Siaki's but less powerful so it does sound a lot like it's just one singer, but it's not :-)
You can actually tell who is singing what as each has a different timbre to their voices. Saiki's is lower pitched, darker and fuller. Miku's is a little higher pitched, brighter and not quite as full. They blend very well though.
The bassist comes up with her parts very quickly apparently. She and the drummer went to the same music college. Great reaction as always. I think Wonderland by Bandmaid is on your list. That’s an interesting one, wonder if you’ll like it!

Thanks, the whole album is a little experimental; they don't sit still & apparently Kanami writes a demo a week or some other insane output. They did almost the entire new album live online paid stream on May 10 and did great(a guitar glitch at one point but fought through it) I know Wonderland is on your list and it is a "busy" song at a slower "jazzier" pace. IMHO they excel at ballads like "Daydreaming" I like everything they have done so far to differing degree's. For some the new album is the best, others don't like the seeming chaos of tracks like Giovanni or the oddness of this track. It took me 3-4 listens to wrap my brain around this one and now I like it.
as many have already said ..Miku and Saiki record the vocals together(i dont think youve reacted to any but there are a few songs with just Miku singing)...that said Kanami goes off with Misa and Akane and she records both guitar parts while Miku and Saiki are recording Vocals so you re kind of correct

FEELIN' YOU Bloody!!! I know why I'm not that high up on the clicks. It's because I don't make them the priority. I don't spend the first 2 minutes of each video asking/begging people to "subscribe", smash that like button (even though they haven't even watched the video yet....I'll NEVER understand the logic there), click the bell, buy their merch, and join their Patreon. From this video I like especially the part, when they do not look at you and after moving only a liitle ( nearly to nothing, only Saiki is moving her head a lot ), but at the end they all stare at you. It gives me shivers. My favourite track on the album.
MISA (bass player) was a guitar player before switching to bass. I have stated this before - she is able to switch from pick to slap and back to pick quickly.
Great reaction. Yeah, I haven't perused through the comments yet, but I'm sure you're going to have guys white knighting for Miku (rhythm guitar). You're not wrong. In most cases, the lead vocalist will handle all vocal lines in the studio. But Miku is primarily a singer. She founded the band with the intention of singing lead. But after a few rehearsals, she decided her voice wasn't powerful and gritty enough for hard rock. So she made the decision to bring Saiki (lead vocal) on board. It proved to be the right decision because the blend of the two girls' voices has become a part of their signature sound (remember Miku taking the vocal line in "Freedom"....she also does this on "Thrill" among others). Now, here's my own white knighting as a guitarist who's played in bands for almost 40 years and makes a living in the production industry: I think this speaks a lot about Miku's character. Think about it. She's taking a "back seat" in the band SHE founded; backing up Saiki on vocal and Kanami on guitar. She cares more about what's best for the band than her own personal ego! How often do you see THAT in the industry? LOL. Looking forward to the next one. Afterthought: I know you've got an astronomical list. But I'd recommend checking out the live version of "Thrill" (shot sans audience in the shadow of Covid), but also Miku's solo endeavor, "Cluppo....Peace and Love". It's VERY '80s pop....ala Cindi Lauper. But it's cute and fun. She actually did it as an April Fool's joke.

The main vocalist, Saiki, and the backup vocalist, Miku on rhythm guitar, have voices so timbrally similar they might be twin sisters! Kinda like harmonies from the Veronicas, ya know...Speaking of The Veronicas, could you react to...HAHAHA! I wouldn't do that to ya...Though, truth be told, they're a favorite of mine, too. I've been watching your Band-Maid reviews in chronological order and discovering them in the same order as you, since I've never actually heard them before. I've only seen the hype and how lots of reaction channels that watch rock/metal discover them. Like you said on Falling Inside the Black - Skillet (if I recall correctly), I'm trying to like them, but I just can't feel it. There's nothing "wrong" per se, but for me, it's a lot of technical proficiency, but no hook. I'm probably not going to remember any of the songs tomorrow, unlike Pa Pa Ya - BabyMetal. Even though I'm not super in love with that song, it was stuck in my head at work for the next couple days after I first heard it. I dig the drums and bass, and the lead singer has a suitable voice, but I find the guitars distracting at times and it's difficult to find the intended melody at times. You touched on it at the end of this one, but that freeform feel is something I despise with a passion when it comes to music. For me, music needs to have a mission and a purpose, not just be meandering through random notes and trying to "feel your way through," so to speak. Now that I think about it, the Opening song for the Anime, Log Horizon Season 3, was done by Band-Maid, and while I don't love it, I like it better than these first three other songs I've heard. Here's to hoping it gets better from here, and I'm able to find a song that brings me in.

They do take down unauthorized posts every once in a while. "Scream for me" by Lovebites got taken down after being up seven months. Doing the whole thing all the way through without breaks might eventually get swept up.

I love this band! But, their latest turn seems to be taking them away from the classic hard rock roots that made them a favorite of mine originally. I'll always go with them, wherever they take it, 'cause they're artists, pursuing a collaborative work of art, called, "Band-Maid". They can't help it! That's how it is with artists...poor things...The only thing that can kill art is politics, where art becomes propaganda, necessarily.
Here it is: no, you really don't know what you're talking about this time. The backing vocalist, Miku, is the real deal, and especially in this album she has a very extensive bag of vocal tricks. She has less power than Saiki (which is what you want from a backup vocalist) but a broader range on both top and bottom and an uncanny ability to seamlessly blend her harmonies with the lead lines.
Hmm, I think Saiki's range lately is significantly wider. And Saiki steps back when Miku steps up and sings her line and let her shine. They really complement each other. It's not about which one is the real deal.

What is even more cringe worthy is when you watch 'Musician reacts' to whatever band and they utterly fail to realise that backing is used and even worse, when studio audio is used to dub over a live performance to make a music video. Great react :-) It's Miku doing the vocals - her voice is different enough to pick it clearly if you know the band well. They have played it live and it sounds unchanged live.

Hate to be that guy who says 'actually', but actually Miku (background singer) war the original lead singer of the band, so while Siaki is a real power house, Miku is more than capable of doing the background parts, and her vocals are a lot like Siaki's but less powerful so it does sound a lot like it's just one singer, but it's not :-)
No doubt Miku realized the two voices harmonized well when she hired Siaki.

You can actually tell who is singing what as each has a different timbre to their voices. Saiki's is lower pitched, darker and fuller. Miku's is a little higher pitched, brighter and not quite as full. They blend very well though.

Thanks, the whole album is a little experimental; they don't sit still & apparently Kanami writes a demo a week or some other insane output. They did almost the entire new album live online paid stream on May 10 and did great(a guitar glitch at one point but fought through it) I know Wonderland is on your list and it is a "busy" song at a slower "jazzier" pace. IMHO they excel at ballads like "Daydreaming" I like everything they have done so far to differing degree's. For some the new album is the best, others don't like the seeming chaos of tracks like Giovanni or the oddness of this track. It took me 3-4 listens to wrap my brain around this one and now I like it.

FEELIN' YOU Bloody!!! I know why I'm not that high up on the clicks. It's because I don't make them the priority. I don't spend the first 2 minutes of each video asking/begging people to "subscribe", smash that like button (even though they haven't even watched the video yet....I'll NEVER understand the logic there), click the bell, buy their merch, and join their Patreon. I'm very much the opposite. From this video I like especially the part, when they do not look at you and after moving only a liitle ( nearly to nothing, only Saiki is moving her head a lot ), but at the end they all stare at you.

Great reaction. Yeah, I haven't perused through the comments yet, but I'm sure you're going to have guys white knighting for Miku (rhythm guitar). You're not wrong. In most cases, the lead vocalist will handle all vocal lines in the studio. But Miku is primarily a singer. She founded the band with the intention of singing lead. But after a few rehearsals, she decided her voice wasn't powerful and gritty enough for hard rock. So she made the decision to bring Saiki (lead vocal) on board. It proved to be the right decision because the blend of the two girls' voices has become a part of their signature sound (remember Miku taking the vocal line in "Freedom"....she also does this on "Thrill" among others). Now, here's my own white knighting as a guitarist who's played in bands for almost 40 years and makes a living in the production industry: I think this speaks a lot about Miku's character. Think about it. She's taking a "back seat" in the band SHE founded; backing up Saiki on vocal and Kanami on guitar. She cares more about what's best for the band than her own personal ego! How often do you see THAT in the industry? LOL. Looking forward to the next one.
Afterthought: I know you've got an astronomical list. But I'd recommend checking out the live version of "Thrill" (shot sans audience in the shadow of Covid), but also Miku's solo endeavor, "Cluppo....Peace and Love". It's VERY '80s pop....ala Cindi Lauper. But it's cute and fun. She actually did it as an April Fool's joke.
Your right! These girls, or maybe a lot of Japanese people in general, almost have no ego and are all business. I guess that’s why they’re so good as opposed to so many stuck up egotistical in the music industry these days

The main vocalist, Saiki, and the backup vocalist, Miku on rhythm guitar, have voices so timbrally similar they might be twin sisters! Kinda like harmonies from the Veronicas, ya know...Speaking of The Veronicas, could you react to...HAHAHA! I wouldn't do that to ya...Though, truth be told, they're a favorite of mine, too. I've been watching your Band-Maid reviews in chronological order and discovering them in the same order as you, since I've never actually heard them before. I've only seen the hype and how lots of reaction channels that watch rock/metal discover them. Like you said on Falling Inside the Black - Skillet (if I recall correctly), I'm trying to like them, but I just can't feel it. There's nothing "wrong" per se, but for me, it's a lot of technical proficiency, but no hook. I'm probably not going to remember any of the songs tomorrow, unlike Pa Pa Ya - BabyMetal. Even though I'm not super in love with that song, it was stuck in my head at work for the next couple days after I first heard it.
I dig the drums and bass, and the lead singer has a suitable voice, but I find the guitars distracting at times and it's difficult to find the intended melody at times. You touched on it at the end of this one, but that freeform feel is something I despise with a passion when it comes to music. For me, music needs to have a mission and a purpose, not just be meandering through random notes and trying to "feel your way through," so to speak.
Now that I think about it, the Opening song for the Anime, Log Horizon Season 3, was done by Band-Maid, and while I don't love it, I like it better than these first three other songs I've heard. Here's to hoping it gets better from here, and I'm able to find a song that brings me in.
Go for live versions a 1000 times better than mv if that's possible.

They do take down unauthorized posts every once in a while. "Scream for me" by Lovebites got taken down after being up seven months. Doing the whole thing all the way through without breaks might eventually get swept up.

I love this band! But, their latest turn seems to be taking them away from the classic hard rock roots that made them a favorite of mine originally. I'll always go with them, wherever they take it, 'cause they're artists, pursuing a collaborative work of art, called, "Band-Maid". They can't help it! That's how it is with artists...poor things...The only thing that can kill art is politics, where art becomes propaganda, necessarily.
Here it is: no, you really don't know what you're talking about this time. The backing vocalist, Miku, is the real deal, and especially in this album she has a very extensive bag of vocal tricks. She has less power than Saiki (which is what you want from a backup vocalist) but a broader range on both top and bottom and an uncanny ability to seamlessly blend her harmonies with the lead lines.

Hmm, I think Saiki's range lately is significantly wider. And Saiki steps back when Miku steps up and sings her line and let her shine. They really complement each other. It's not about which one is the real deal.

Glad you picked up on the 'fan boys'. What is even more cringe worthy is when you watch 'Musician reacts' to whatever band and they utterly fail to realise that backing is used and even worse, when studio audio is used to dub over a live performance to make a music video.
