2:31 you skipped the part where you remove the adjustment screw with the 5/32nds allen key. Trying to take that switch apart without doing that will only frustrate and risk breakage.
Ive had 2x 4009's and 1x 4048 shurflo pumps, ALL 3 had intermittent connection issues with the pressure switch, one even failed within 3 months. Ive had the head of the unit vibrate away from the body because the bolts they used were not quite long enough also. Everything is utter junk now, the threads on them are plastic making cross threading connections very VERY easy to do and replacing that is 2/3 the cost of the whole pump of course. At the minimum each pump should come with a spare replacement switch instead of making tens of thousands of us go without running water for days to weeks until we can replace it... Thanks for discovering this cheap fix, Im an off grider for life so you will save me many hundreds over my life.
First of all, thanks for the video. Quick story! We spent December and half of January in Gulf Shores Alabama. During this time there were several days where the temps were in the low 20's. Even though we had full hookups, several of the campers experienced a water pump issue. We did not check ours at the time and found on our way back to Texas our pump had issues. Remembering the campers ALL said their failures were pressure switches, I decided to just replace mine to see if the problem went away. I found your video first and followed your lead not only in the repair but also in what you ordered. So yesterday I ordered, and today I fixed the problem. GREAT INFORMATIVE VIDEO!!!
Just stumbled upon this video. I have barely ran my pump, maybe 3 hours total. It's newly installed. The relay failed on me right before a trip. I have an accumulator installed to help with the pressure. This video saved me!
Great video! Recently, I spoke the the manufacturer of this pump, Pentair / Shurflo, they told me the reason they only provide a one year warranty for this pump is because the brush wears out. If you camp off grid a lot, the life of these brush motor water pumps are 1-3 years. A common sign of failure is that pump flow reduces a bit and goes out unexpectedly. If a company made one with brushless motor, it would last a lot longer but I could find no upgrade. For $65 - 75, you’re better off replacing the entire pump because on my rig, it takes about an hour to remove and install plus the backache of working in a tight space.
Thanks Man! I ordered a pack of 2 micro switches and repaired my pump and my spare pump. Easy with your help! Your video gave me the courage to do it myself and save a bunch of money, besides being much more eco friendly than replacing 2 pumps!
All these pumps have the same achilles heal (Cycles kills the micro switch). You can add an accumulator to the system to reduce the cycling or get a pump with a bypass so the pump still runs when less flow is demanded (in Lieu of cycling the microswitch). The best fix seems to be to add a Solid State Relay to take the heavy switching current and thus reduce the arcing significantly. The SSR does the heavy lifting based on the small current switching of the micro. This video is a fantastic example of what is going wrong. Great job pulling it down tot he root cause 🙂
Wow, amazing comment. Thank you. I’m have an accumulator which helps. I have my eyes on a bypass pump someday, but it hasn’t quit yet. I’ll look into the solid state relay. I’m going to guess that you’re an electrical/electronics engineer?
Love to see people try working on something new, and end up fixing it for 1/10the price of new, not to mention saving throwing away a perfectly good pump over a failed switch..
Agreed. It happens too often, people replace rather than repair. Unfortunately, that's the direction consumer goods are going, "Designed Obsolescence"...
Just wanted to say thank you so much for this video! Because of you, I as able to troubleshoot the exact same problem and fix it myself after getting that part in the mail. It’s videos like these that make vanlife even more worth the hassles. Thanks so much!!!
I appreciate so much you taking the time to explain this! I worry from time to time about the water pump dying just at the wrong time when camping. Have always thought about getting a spare to take along just in case. Mine's in storage for winter, will have to take a close look at the model in Spring, and order a spare!
I enjoy sharing what we learn. Of the many components in the camper, I find the water pump is one of the most important. We can use our jugs, but a spare is small and easy to replace. Finding out that the old broken pump could be fixed fir $4 was just an added bonus. No need to buy a new one.
Nice. Had to take mine apart a few weeks ago.. the check valve was stuck. Was fairly easy to repair! Thanks for sharing! Yet another great project video!
Thanks for the tear down. I’m currently troubleshooting our less than one year old class c coach’s water pump which cycles one every 10 seconds or so even with no valves open. My first thought is that I must have a leak somewhere…and I still think that’s likely, but this gives me another direction too.
Merry Christmas This was very helpful. It sounds like my pump has the same issue, it just stopped working! I’ll definitely do as you did and replace the switch.
Great vid...good camera angles showing all the steps. I boondock in my Northern Lite truck camper 6-8 months out of the year in the Rocky Mountains for the last 3 years and haven't had any problem with my water pump yet. Kinda thinking about pre-empting a failure and change out the switch before that happens if it's a common thing.
Getting a whole pump and keeping it on hand has been my goto strategy. I was able to fix this one and re-use it as a spare. If I have a failure for any reason, I want a complete pump ready to go! How do you like your Norther Lite, I think they are AWESOME!
great commentary, even though i just bought a new pump i will try to duplicate what you have shown and hopefully have a spare...my pump just stopped, checked the electrics and fuses and shook my head...one second it pumped ,the next second it was silent...odered a multimeter to see if power is coming to it..never done that before but your youtube videos are gold..have a great trip wherever you go guys..and thanks from the UK.
There are many reasons that water pumps like these fail, however, I think a faulty switch is the most common. Good luck with your diagnostics! We are looking forward to visiting the UK in the near future, but for now, we are in Michigan and headed to the Pacific Northwest of the US. Cheers.
My shurflo pump is turning on and pumping water… my issue is it won’t shut off. I use it in my food truck… normally it shuts off when I turn my tap off and comes on when I turn my tap on. It hasn’t had a lot of use yet and has been working great until the last few times I’ve worked my truck. Do you have any idea and suggestions for what it might be? Does it have a sensor? Thank you
Sounds like the pressure switch. That is another common issue. They are adjustable, but I’d suggest getting a replacement pump and then seeing if you can fix the old one. Especially if this is a business. They aren’t that expensive and then you’d have a spare.
Easy to do when you can get to your water pump. Try doing it on a 2022/23 Winnebago Travato 59G. I did it yesterday after my water pump refused to pump water. Voila! It now works again.
Thank you for this video on how to make a very inexpensive repair. I did give you a thumbs up for your video. Although this has nothing to do with your excellent video and instructions, the problem with the Shurflo water pumps (particularly this model (4008) is that they are so dang loud! Particularly noticeable in a smaller rig. I came across your channel while looking for solutions to replace my Shurflo 4008.
Thanks for the comment. In regards to the sound. Try adding a flexible tube to the inlet and outlet side. Leave a loop in the flexible tubes (make the shape of an O) and then connect back to the factory lines. Also, make sure that your PEX pipes are secured properly and not vibrating against the walls. Just the flexible tubes do a good job of insulating the vibration, but there are other steps you can take. Adding an accumulator tank can also help quiet the system.
It was an intermittent issue. It seemed to be a build up of carbon tracking. The contacts were mostly melted. But, sometimes, it would work perfectly. The micro switch had a 20-50k cycle life.
Thanks for the video! Definitely helped me understand the internal workings of that. I purchased a brand new one of these pumps for my self built conversion van and immediately had trouble with it. I found if I move those wires where they plug, it was almost like it was changing the sensitivity of it. I could push on it and the pump would turn on or off prematurely. I returned that pump and purchased another and have had no problems with it until recently. It started acting up, and when I move those wires around it does that same thing as the one I returned. Did you happen to notice if that switch was pretty loose in the housing? Because that would explain what I’m seeing..
DC voltage/amps are hard on contacts, they deteriorate after some wear, that contact is on the positive line. Also if your pump keeps blowing a fuse your battery may be going bad, as the voltage drops the current will increase and could blow fuse, before it burns up the pump.
Thanks for your video I have the same make….the pump works but water does not flow…..do you have any ideas on re priming as can’t find and sensible answers…..thank you so much Martin Uk
I don’t, sorry. Basically, you need to release the pressure from the system, unscrew the water line from both sides of the pump and then unscrew the pump from wherever it’s mounted. In my case, I had to cut the wires (pull the fuse out first) and then re-wire it when I put it back. Some campers come with a handy plug that makes it easier to disconnect it.
I've had my camper for 8 years. I RV full time. I just replaced the water pump for the second time. The first time was years ago and there was black plastic debris under the water pump so something spinning went bad. It was so long ago I don't recall taking it apart to see what it was. I'm not even sure if I saved it with that intention. This time when it went out it had symptoms for the past year. It seemed like it was shutting off when the RV wasn't level because I'd go out and push on the pump body and it would start working again. Just before it stopped working this time I pressed on the lower assembly and it started to work but only for a little bit. I hooked up to water and was able to turn it over but once I turned off the hose feed. The pump wouldn't work. I don't think it's the pressure switch. I'm leaning toward the lower assembly being messed up. I'll take it apart this time to see. I might be able to replace the lower abd have this as a spare. I may have been able to do that last time...
Thank you for posting this. I have a water pump issue, the fuse keeps blowing and I can't determine the cause. As a test, I removed the two cables from the pump, put in a new fuse and turned on the switch. The switch stayed lit/fuse didn't blow. Does this mean the issue is with the pump?
Thank you for sharing. However, I have a question. If indeed it is just a switch. What I had experienced was after I filled our holding tank and switched the valve back to Normal I went inside the RV turned the pump on and the water was coming back out of the fill area. Could this be a result of the switch failing?
That doesn’t sound like a pump issue. I’d need more information about your setup to have an idea of what’s going on. I don’t have enough info to build a mental picture of what you’re explaining. Can you elaborate?
I did adjust it, and now I leave it wide open. When we are on city water with constant pressure the temp stays consistent. When we run off the pump and stop/start the water flow. The temperature varies a lot. We’ve gotten used to controlling it manually since the mixing valve didn’t stop the scalding water. I have some ideas on how to fix it, but it’s at the bottom of my list. We are visiting NuCamp soon and would like to run it by their techs. It could be defective or we could have a bad check valve. It’s been my experience that RVs don’t usually have consistent water temperatures unless the water flow stays steady. That wastes water, so we deal with temperature fluctuations.
@@Stonyboot Thanks for reply. My wife uses more water to shampoo hair. While boondocking, I usually take a Navy shower - leave water to drip (wife calls it a spit shower). Then increase flow for quick rinse. On city water & sewer now to adjust mixing valve. Will switch to pump tomorrow to test settings.
Great video, except that you misassembled the black button that should push against the pressure adjustment screw. As you have assembled it, the pressure set-screw only pushes against air, preventing any adjustment. BTW, per the comment below, I didn't remove that set -screw when I repaired mine. No problem.
We have the exact same pump and it just failed last night. I found if I hold pressure on that same wire of yours that melted, the pump will run, but it gets too hot to hold the wire. Wondering if that could be a faulty switch causing that? Thanks for this video! New sub here.
I looked up the cycle life of that specific micro switch and its makes sense that it failed, they burn out after a predictable number of on/off cycles. The nice thing is that its easy and cheap to replace!
The switch controls the cycling of the pump. Pressure is controlled by a set screw that changes how much pressure it takes for the pump to cycle on and off. The issue I was fixing was the pump was not cycling consistently. It keept stopping and not starting again until I tapped it with something. You can adjust the pressure set point on most RV pumps using an Allen wrench.
the switch goes bad on these pumps all the time the best fix is to put a inline pressure switch in from amazon it requires a tee fitting to be put inline 1/4 npt the water pump switch gets water in them and makes them fail ,quality inline switch will last forever and you don't have to remove water pump to replace the switch
Omg can someone do a tutorial on this permanent fix please?! Replacing my second failed pressure switch and coming back to this video for a refresher, which saved me the first time!
These pumps are total garbage. Contact broke on mine. Neighborhood had the same one spare. Change it yesterday already broke by morning in the same place. That's what you call built to break America
2:31 you skipped the part where you remove the adjustment screw with the 5/32nds allen key. Trying to take that switch apart without doing that will only frustrate and risk breakage.
Noted, thank you.
2 years later and this video is still helping us campers! Thanks for the great info!

Correct. In my case, I could get the switch to pass voltage, however, the fact that it was melted was a good indication that it needed to be replaced.

I looked up the cycle life of that specific micro switch and its makes sense that it failed, they burn out after a predictable number of on/off cycles. The nice thing is that its easy and cheap to replace!
Question… when your pump went out did it stop making noise completely or did the pump sound like it was working but no water would come out?
EXCELLENT
so replacing the switch will help with pressure ? i notice mine takes a long time to build up pressure too ?
The switch controls the cycling of the pump. Pressure is controlled by a set screw that changes how much pressure it takes for the pump to cycle on and off.
The issue I was fixing was the pump was not cycling consistently. It keept stopping and not starting again until I tapped it with something.
You can adjust the pressure set point on most RV pumps using an Allen wrench.
no, the switch just shuts off the power to motor, does not increase pressure
I love Youtoube : DIY = +$$$ in my pocket !!!! Tks.
I'm glad it helped!
Hey. I have the same pump that wouldn’t turn on when I flip the power switch. Did yours turned on before you switched out the part?
Thx
🤗
Awesome
My pump turned on but didn’t have enough power to pull the water . Did yours not turn on at all
Oh don't let anyone tell you that your cheap your just Damm smart.
That’s a good point!
My pump keeps cycling on and off every 5 to 10 seconds even when not calling for wire. Any thoughts?
At 2:18 the pump head is more than $26.00 now
45 now
Hello! I need your help to find the water pump! Could you please help me I will appreciate it
the switch goes bad on these pumps all the time the best fix is to put a inline pressure switch in from amazon it requires a tee fitting to be put inline 1/4 npt the water pump switch gets water in them and makes them fail ,quality inline switch will last forever and you don't have to remove water pump to replace the switch
That's a great idea! I've never even heard of that, I'll go check it out now. Thank you!
Especially if you have a 17 amp pumpnthe switch gets super hot
Omg can someone do a tutorial on this permanent fix please?! Replacing my second failed pressure switch and coming back to this video for a refresher, which saved me the first time!
But you can easily get a new pump from Facebook or camping world though
microswitch unavailable to order
Thanks for letting me know., I was able to update the link to an active listing. amzn.to/3SGxlk2
