  • In this episode we leave Hondarribia and are pleasantly supposed by the land breeze managing to get some sailing in. We then have to motor again only our engine stops! It looks like we have ran out of deisel but we can't understand how. Our buddy boat finds us a place to get diesel but we have trouble communicating in Spanish.
We are a family of five with plans for an epic adventure, sailing around the world. We have bought a boat we have to gut it, rebuild it, sell all of our possessions and have t he guts to cast off. Follow our adventures.

High guys take you return into a loop back to your feed line it stops the tank emptying.
Put tee s on your fuel feeds with clear vertical pipe which can be used as a sight glass it shows you the fuel level at a glance no electric s.
Great to hear that ye are reefing in good time .
    Thanks guys fair sailing

I have thought for a while about installing a ‘sight glass’ as you call it. I haven’t worked out how to connect the top to let it breath though. Also does it have to be done with a particular diesel/engine room safe material? H

I used brass tee between filter and pump .turning clear nylon up the bulkhead a bung with a pinhole to allow minimal ventilation. If you were to insert a red plastic floating pelet it would be very easy to see . If you have dual tanks then you might use two sight tubes . It is a simple option you can mark off the heights with stickers or a marker . Your return loop sounds dodgy if it's not paired into the tank ye are running off . On a previous boat I could use the sight tube for bleeding the fuel system . I'd such on the pipe and watch the bubbles rise from the fuel that was the easiest to bleed.
My Endurance has a perkins and that takes me about half an hour and lots of !#!#!
I truly admire you and your adventures thanks for sharing.
Take great care of each other , fair winds and safe passage

What an interesting problem, wouldn't have occurred to me 🙂

In theory if both tanks are full & then one tank valve is closed it would be possible for the turned off tank to overflow due to returning diesel.
For two tanks looks like people have a mechanically linked pair of 3 way valves that will switch the return line on a tank off when the fuel feed line is off.
Then there's the one tank only with an engine feed & return, fuel can be pumped between the two tanks with a transfer pump.

Interesting thought. I have given it some thinking. They could only overflow through the vent which is cockpit height (unless there is a leak!!). I guess there must have been some “pressure” on occasion as the tanks have been in various stages of full and the boat has been in big seas. They haven’t leaked yet, so hopefully just travelling between the two tanks only in this circumstance. H

About the diesel return lines. The safest thing to do is to have three way valves in the diesel suply and diesel return lines. The down side is when tank A is empty and you switch to tank b you also must switch the three way valve of the return lines. Its not A good idea to have both thanks suplying the engine at the same time.

That was a thought I had about adding another 3 way. What’s the reason for it not being a good idea to have two tanks feeding at once?

@@fivegosailing well…. The fuel level wil not drop at the same rate in both fuel tanks. Therefore one of the tanks will run out of fuel. . From That moment your engine wil not picknick up fuel but air from the empty tank. On air only the engine wil not run as you already found out.
2nd when the Boat is on one side when sailing for a longer time the lowest fuel tank can get overfillend by the fuel that runs from the highest to the lowest fuel fank.
3de, the return fuel wil most likely go to the lowest fuel tank, this is the second reason the lowest tank can get overfilled!

carefull to turn OFF the engine cooling sea cock when you have engine trubble like this. as the exhaust water lock can fill full of water ( the running engien and exhaust pressure can throw the water out but simple cranking sometimes cannot )
and you can have water come back in and jam the engine. ( AND POSSIBLY DESTROY THE ENGINE ) many water lock mufflers have a drain at the bottom, on the larger ship i work on we have to pump out the exhaust boxes in order to start the 2 cycle diesel engines, as they cannot over come the pressure to lift the water out of the water box.
