I once had an engine failure and had to sail into a harbour and dock, on a town quay, under sail. But that was a familiar port, in the middle of summer, daylight, perfect wind AND a full crew. You do this in a foreign country, a totally unknown harbour, at night, in winter and alone - absolutely amazing. I take my peaked-sailing cap off to you sir!
Here here . 100 % agree I sailed into harbour because of engine failure doing the Scottish islands. That was slightly choppy and I was solo. The harbour master tore me a new one though .but I managed with plenty of fenders and hanging on by the seat of my pants. . I learned a very valuable lesson. Always have a back up engine for just in case . Get an outboard and keep it serviced along with your onboard engine.
In your videos you always have such a great attitude when trying to troubleshoot things and I've only seen you not smiling once in one of your last videos you are such a pleasure to watch. And I've been watching before you left Los Angeles to Hawaii on that little boat that should never have crossed any ocean whatsoever. I'm much older than you and have had for sale boats by myself and done deliveries and you're such an inspiration for me to get back out there and to just make the best of everything thank you for sharing all of your adventures good bad and whatever comes between that. I'm in homosassa Florida and I've had the desire as little kid to have the experience of a glider. I would really like to meet up with you and meet you and just have a talk if nothing else. I enjoy all your videos look forward to them all
Sam, you are just as hard core as Eric the Viking and you have explored far more oceans and destinations many of which have been far from your own “turf”. I find the presentation of your travels to be far more viewer friendly and always modest despite your impressive sea mileage covered! Fair sailing and happy days always! SkipRay.
You and Eric - two of the most entertaining and straightforward RUclips sailors. Watching you develop your skills (while admitting that you are endlessly learning) is fascinating.
Entering an unknown harbor single handed at night with a broken motor. Was too boring, I guess, so you started filming. I don't even have words for that. HERO!
Can see Norway is a hardcore maritime nation. So many boats and even a grocery store by the pier. EDIT: Also we'll be needing a drunk livestream from Eric & you in the future heh.
Hey, Sam Holmes...love your RUclips Channel! I'm a crusty, over the hill 77 year old sailor, and grew up on the Chesapeake Bay. There are no words to describe how much I miss sailing! I want to ask if you would date stamp when you make your videos. Thank you in advance! Fair winds, and following seas! Cheers! :)
Legendary video! Holy cow! Cold, HUGE seas, dropping the motor at night in an unfamiliar, very technical spot, Sam says, "Just another day on Sam Holmes Sailing. What's the problem?"
Hi Sam and Erik, I am so glad that both of you have met and as such brought all of us together. Both of you are an enormous source of inspiration to a vast amount of sailors aspiring similar passages but bound to ground for whatever reason. Thanx a thousand times
When I've had what I think is a tough day, I watch your video and all the stress melts away - you are an inspiration to follow what you love, and be good at it! Those waves going into the harbour looked pretty rough but you just deal with it. And the walk around the mooring near Bergen was just stunning! Lucky people to live in such a pure environment.
Hey Sam, suggestion for the lazy jacks, set them up to be able to pull them to the mast and fasten out of the way. Only really need them if dropping the sail. Simply done. Fair winds, Elaine
All the build up and days of sailing mentioning Eric and bam!!!! We started drinking and forgotten about RUclips muahahahahahahahahahahah awesome nothing like an unexpected ending funny stuff man classic Sam
Love watching you meet some of your peers this weekend on your channel,Erik is in a class of sailor with an amazing skill set which sets him apart from others on YT’bers,,I find it funny that I watch the TV from my recliner at home in the city and I’m more scared for him then he is,,
Thanks for another brilliant vid. IF one day I set off to sail the North Sea your experience will be there in the back of my mind. Docking under sail, at night, in an unfamiliar harbour while remaining calm, and keeping up a video commentary. You tick all the boxes for someone to look up to.
Another great video. You are a model of the adage "its only a problem if you think it is" Calm cool and collected dealing with the inevitable failure of stuff at the most inopportune times. You are a master!
Just as the main swung around in that last gybe, I was thinking, geez, that's not like Sam - wouldn't he normally prepare well ahead of time like Christian Williams with a preventer line?? And within a millisecond or two, Sam's apologizing for not tying it off with a preventer... Glad to see you caught up with Erik, anyway - Williams, Holmes, and Aanderaa - my top three sailing channels now that SV Bora Bora is no longer.
Don't put yourself down Sam. Crossing the Atlantic in that small sloop of yours takes courage. Your sailing accomplishments put you right up there with Eric. I'm sure he'd agree.
Sam and Eric. You guys teach me so much about sailing. My dad and I bought an O'Day 25 trailer sailer and owe lots of our learning to you guys. This is a perfect collaboration between amazing sailors.
Good on you for focusing on a night full of sailor stories, rather than making youtube content from that meeting of legends. All that can come later, I would enjoy watching a collaboration with the two of you.
I love seeing two of my favourite RUclipsrs in the same shot. And somehow I find it unsurprising, and refreshing, that you drank and told sea stories instead of videotaping. Awesome!
Wow, love the North Sea sail and the nighttime sail approach into the harbor with no motor! Keep the video's coming. Perhaps our paths may cross in FL (on my Hobie TI). Salt water kills the electrics every time!
Eric is awesome and i enjoy his videos like yours💯its like comparing Harley and Honda. Same but different but are equally a blast to ride💯hope both of you are safe and well and thanks so much for sharing so i can enjoy from home on Cape Cod👍👍💯💯😁
No way!? Two of my random lockdown legends crossing paths!? That's awesome to see! Hahaha you got shitfaced with him!? Wish i could join you. Love you guys, keep adventuring and taking us all with you (p.s. it's evidentially way more than sailing huh?) !
I had the throttle connection come apart on my yacht . I lost all power in a busy narrow river , with my sails stowed as i was preparing to anchor . I quickly lost all forward motion due to the current , but fortunately , i was not alone . My dad used to crew with me , and he was a motorboater . I dived below and engine covers flew . Grabbed the throttle arm , i give it a good arm full to restore way . It took a little time to jury rig a piece of string as a throttle , while holding power to keep way on . I managed to get it working , so we could manoeuver enough to get the hook down , and make proper repairs . Your not alone !
Great video. Your videos stress me out when I think of being out there alone with giant waves and the engine failing. You are one courageous man, I couldn't do what you are doing. Keep up the great work and stay safe!
Good morning from Nz. Just love your channel mate. Having seen 75 summers, I've become an armchair sailor. So subbed to you and about another 7 or 8 sailing channels. Ha I've lost count. Btw, having Scottish blood flowing through my veins, it's an insult to use vegetarian and haggis coupled together. No such thing. Call it hash. Call it mash...crap, but never haggis. True haggis ingredients consist of lungs, and heart of lamb, beef or lamb suet, fat, followed with onions, oatmeal and seasoned with, salt, black pepper and cayenne and other spices. And that my friend is authentic/traditional haggis. I've no idea what you've just eaten. Definitely not haggis. Oh yes you can buy, vegetarian or vegan haggis, but no true Scotsman will eat it, or stoop so low as to call it haggis. Have a great Christmas and a happy NY2022. Take care.
Great video, Sam... You earned some time off in sunny Fla. Pickled Herring is a real trooper and deserves a rest. That night entry was total chaos and you gutted your way through! Those crash gybes made me flinch as I know how dangerous and destructive they can be. Have some comfortable Holidays with family and friends.
This was a bit of a tense video. My father was an avid glider pilot. I was the sailor in the family. Looking forward to the continuation of your sailing journey as well as your new soaring adventures.
Gotta love Norway! That area is especially beautiful. We enjoy watching the videos Sam. And just like the others say, you have such a cool personality while dealing with adversity! Have a good one!
Glad the engine was simple. It sounded like a bad connection. When you push the starter, it loads up the weak connection and knocks it out. Yes, I follow Eric. Great stuff that crazy Viking. Ha ha. And yes, I watch RUclips on gliders too as I am a glider pilot. Very cool. Good on ya mate!
It’s always fun when two people you watch me out there in RUclips world very cool glad you guys had fun take a break enjoy the process you guys are in it
Those Chinese diesel heaters are amazing little units. My wife and I have lived aboard about 5 years in the pnw by Seattle and it’s kept us warm all the way down to 10 degrees outside. The bearings wear out after about 3 years so we’re on our second one but for $130 you can’t beat it
I thought your adventure was over for the year when I saw your Instagram posts hauling out Pickle. Nice that your YT posts still continue with your travels leading up to that point.
O M G...This meeting had to happen...after watching you x to Bergen, he was the person I wanted to ask if you had made connection with, as he is currently sailing around the same areas. Lerwck is his second home...lol.
Another great video. Loved the sailing footage of the North Sea, and the walk through of the accidental jibes. Nice work on handling the engine failure and sailing the boat in, fortunate the weather, and lack of traffic cooperated. Was looling forward to the interchange with Eric, maybe next time. Florida for the winter, you got it going. Fair winds.
Great show. You, Erik and Kevin boothby are the only ones doing any active sailing right now of all the people I follow. Sailor James is still stuck in Hawaii and everyone else is just sitting at anchor in the tropics.
Sam, you may not "claim" to be as brave as Erik, and I am not one to compare horses...but both you guys have gigantic, titanium BAWLZ. The first videos for each of you I watched were stories of men setting out across oceans to test their resolve and skill, and while I was worried that I was watching lunatics trying to find their end, I have come to realize that you guys are a rare breed of dauntless adventurers. Seeing you guys standing on the same dock made me wonder how it managed to stay afloat, and had me trying to remember if gravity on the planet was altered during that month (lol) Anyway, glad you are back here in sunny, hot, rainy South Florida for the winter. I won't pretend to be as interested in gliders as I am sailboats, but anything you put out I am sure will be informative, entertaining, and worth watching. Be safe, brave adventurer!!
I have gone off some side tracks inspired by your videos. I got into reading more about small boats inspired by Sven Yrvind and then got on some History Channel thing about Sir Ernest Shackelton and Frank Wesley's disastrous attempt in 1914 to cross Antarctica and how, in the end, they were able to make it out 800 miles on the arctic ocean in a 21 foot rigged life boat in weather and seas that sunk a much larger boat in the area at the time, which makes more sense to me after reading Sven's book - the larger the boat, the more force of resistance against a violent sea, the more stressful the sailing and potential for catastrophic failures. I am learning to sail on a Sovereign 18 and, for awhile, did not have a motor. Its nice when all the conditions line up; isn't it? I don't think I would want to go as small as Sven Yrvind but I like how you keep things simple, efficient, and seemingly more easily manageable than many on larger boats. I also like your sense of wonder and how you keep things optimistic. Thanks
Man I sail reservoir and Lake Erie, your confidence and relaxed approach is very inspiring. Trying to put a BVI trip together if you have any suggestions. Keep on keepin on man, I love it!
Sam! You're one of the most hard-core sailors out there! Crossing oceans solo on a sub 30 foot boat is no fart in the wind! That's a big nasty raunchy boy in a battened down cabin....everyone has to address it! Keep it up Capt! I'm gonna finish the rest of the video now.
I remember 20 years ago in the middle of January, wife and I and two small kids with snow saucers over their back packs looking like ninja turtles walking before us.. flew to Oslo and wonderful train to Opdayll for skiing to find half an inch of the white stuff.. bummed but we enjoyed the town and awesome mountains. We took a train west over some blizzard snowy scenes and 10' of snow and they are smart to have many tunnels or awning like breaks to help keep snow so deep from delaying or stopping the trains alltogether. Came down a fjord and finally to Bergen where it rained most the time but what a nice colorful and busy city. Being an artist we went to the Edvard Munch (The Scream artist) I was glad to see some landscapes and still lifes too. Interesting as along the cascades of the western US...the very rainy Seattle gets soaked but it is dessert almost on the eastern side of the range all the way to Mexico it seems ...Opdayl one of the skiing capitals of Norweign Skiing was dry and mountain ridge between Opdayl eastward was in blizzard snow dropping mode and then Bergen like an almost tropical port city.in January no less. If you get to Oslo see the sailing museums they have.

@@fordism.01 or have your anker ready at all time and use it. Give you time to breathe and making a plan to moor.🤘🏼
Agreed, that was masterful piloting. And he stayed so calm, which is always the key.
Eric and Sam. The two best sailing channels on RUclips.
Cool vid Sam! I watch Erik's videos as well. Awesome adventure. ⛵
You and Eric are two of my favorite sailors , mainly because you're out there sailing and battling the elements ! Cheers
Don’t forget Kevin Boothby on his gaff rigged westsail 32! All great solo sailors! But yea, Eric is the oldest!
Oops, boldest!
Don’t forget Roger Taylor “MingMing” he sailed these northern waters from UK to 82* N solo in 22-24’ ers Engineless boats.

what a legend. im so happy there are people out there in the world living an adventure. this man is more alive than anyone i know.
Your sailing videos are the best in the business, better than even Free Range Sailing. Thank you for allowing us to be there with you.
Eric is a giant among sailors, Including Sam Holmes in that same sentence.
Sam, you are just as hard core as Eric the Viking and you have explored far more oceans and destinations many of which have been far from your own “turf”. I find the presentation of your travels to be far more viewer friendly and always modest despite your impressive sea mileage covered! Fair sailing and happy days always! SkipRay.
Well said ... I couldn't agree more... This lad is teaching me the best ways to sail n attitude is spot on :)
You and Eric - two of the most entertaining and straightforward RUclips sailors. Watching you develop your skills (while admitting that you are endlessly learning) is fascinating.
Awesome, you and Erich are a couple of my favorite sailors, cool seeing you run into him. 👍
Me too!
Agreed! And neither of them need to wear thongs to get viewers! Great entertainment.
Entering an unknown harbor single handed at night with a broken motor. Was too boring, I guess, so you started filming. I don't even have words for that. HERO!
Awesome, Erik is such a top geezer! Would have loved to be on the beer with you two!👍🇬🇧🍺
Can see Norway is a hardcore maritime nation. So many boats and even a grocery store by the pier. EDIT: Also we'll be needing a drunk livestream from Eric & you in the future heh.
Your cheerful approach to soaking/sailing is really appealing. Much appreciated.

I'm glad y'all forgot about youtube for a moment. It sounds like a sincere moment y'all shared.
Hey Sam, suggestion for the lazy jacks, set them up to be able to pull them to the mast and fasten out of the way. Only really need them if dropping the sail. Simply done. Fair winds, Elaine
ERICK channel is great, he has so much respect for other sailing channels and he even showed your channel on his.

Thank you for your vidoes proving sailing single-handed can not only be done, but can be done safely and enjoyable.
Sam hanging out with Erik you can learn a lot. I love watching him sail across the north sea the man has got some cohunes.
Another great video. You are a model of the adage "its only a problem if you think it is" Calm cool and collected dealing with the inevitable failure of stuff at the most inopportune times. You are a master!

Oh Man! So happy you stumble with Erik. Please support this guys on Patreon! This is waaaaaaay better than watching TV with tons of adds.

Man it makes me happy to see your channel blowing up! Can't wait for more diving videos with singing overlays
Really great that the two of you finally met! We have all been rooting for both of you to be successful in your respective missions!
How badass is that? “Eric and I were going to do a video together, but we got so drunk we just forgot!” Luvvit! 👍👍👍
Glad the big waves didn't get you and you found your short in your starting system.. sail on brother be safe.. ❤️⛵
I've watched so many sailing channels, but you and your channel are slowly but surely becoming legend (legend meaning, someone to admire).
love the juxtaposition of the title and thumbnail, feel like it captures your spirit quite well. your outlook inspires me
Great episode. Ever consider installing cockpit weather cloths, fabric panels that attach to your lifelines and pushpit rails?
That was so cool seeing a submarine glide past you in the channel!! Thanks for the adventure!
No way!? Two of my random lockdown legends crossing paths!? That's awesome to see! Hahaha you got shitfaced with him!? Wish i could join you. Love you guys, keep adventuring and taking us all with you (p.s. it's evidentially way more than sailing huh?) !
Enjoy hanging out. there's more to life than YT. Enjoy the scols.
Though it's hard to find strong beer in Norway.
To have been there and enjoyed the stories would have been epic!
My two favourite youtube sailors in one video. You guys are both legends!
Eric is a certified madman. Hope you enjoyed your time with him. You two do seem very Similar

"After a couple of beers I forgot about RUclips". This is even better than a full interview because it's so 'you'. Enjoy your stay in the US.
Take care.
Aviation and Sailing, a man after my own heart.
This guy has such a great life, sailing in the summer, then snowbird down to Fla for the winter!
Looking forward to his vids, great content.
Great update Sam! Thanks for sharing.
Really like how you work through issues - calm & concentrated. Thanks for posting!
I live in the US. Sam's videos make me wish for better.
2 of my favorite Sailors. Is it already xmas?
Navigated a foreign inlet at night under sail, without auxiliary power, and docked... LEGEND!!!
This was a bit of a tense video. My father was an avid glider pilot. I was the sailor in the family. Looking forward to the continuation of your sailing journey as well as your new soaring adventures.
Thank you and yes Eric is a legend .....I follow his video;s all the time .
Eric is a legend
Gotta love Norway! That area is especially beautiful. We enjoy watching the videos Sam. And just like the others say, you have such a cool personality while dealing with adversity! Have a good one!
Brilliant Video and always looking happy. Brightened my day!
At 10 minutes, you were surfing. Wonderful Sailing Sam !!
Sam, you have inspired me to try sailing this spring. Love your videos!
Keep bringing the great inspiration of work ,you keep me thinking positive
My Two favorite solo sailing wizards.
It’s always fun when two people you watch me out there in RUclips world very cool glad you guys had fun take a break enjoy the process you guys are in it
Great film.. thanks. So in impressed with your engine fixing.

Very bummed out that you didn’t do more with NBJS! I’ll be looking forward to next time!
Very nice trip. Glad you got to meet Eric. Yes, he has a very nice boat. I also flew sail planes! You will love it.
😮 the two brave men finally
met!
awesome you got to meet Erik too, as i was watching thats all i could think about. Love the content, inspiring.
Aight awesome to see you meet up with Erik from NBJS man!
Why do you not rig a preventer when you are in these unsettled downwind conditions?
Was thinking the same thing, not sure why Sam didn't use one. If I remember he's used a preventer in the past.
That sucks I was really looking forward to your talk with Erick.
Oh, I would never go into a harbour under sail. Respect. I mean you kinda had no choice but it's still something.
Sam, you may not "claim" to be as brave as Erik, and I am not one to compare horses...but both you guys have gigantic, titanium BAWLZ. Great collaboration bro keep it up !!!!! Sail safe!
Man, you could learn a lot from Eric. Even if you head South what you learn will go with you.
Great video! Also loved Sailing into Freedom ep. 292 Disaster at sea
Man I sail reservoir and Lake Erie, your confidence and relaxed approach is very inspiring. Trying to put a BVI trip together if you have any suggestions. Keep on keepin on man, I love it!
NIce cruising my friend...Cruise all other with the 28 Cape Dory...nice boat
Sam! You're one of the most hard-core sailors out there! Crossing oceans solo on a sub 30 foot boat is no fart in the wind! That's a big nasty raunchy boy in a battened down cabin....everyone has to address it! Keep it up Capt! I'm gonna finish the rest of the video now.
you colonized my mind with that image
@@MarcosMonteiro79 I'm glad I could help! It's what I'm here for!
SAM YOU AMAZE AND INSPIRE ME. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEOS. I JUST FOUND YOUR VIDEOS AND NOW I WILL FOLLOW YOU. GOOD LUCK AND TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!!
You make super video's! I love them.Cheers from Denmark. Keep them coming, and stay safe.

Good stuff. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
Coming into a strange harbor under sail, at night. This guy is test pilot calm. 😊
