I have the Motion XT for my '17 and '22 BMW X5's. Used on a 3064 mile vacation trip last summer from Columbia, SC to Michigan and back down the Western side of MI, IN, MO, you get the drill and back to Columbia. It went through some thunderstorms and blistering driving that I am noted for and came out a perfect 10. No moisture of any kind entered the Motion XT, no discernable wind noise and no lose of MPG. I bought a small two step collapsible stool to reach up to the Motion for loading/unloading and off we went! Highly recommend. Looks awesome on the X5. I just bought a 2022 X5 yesterday and after new Thule crossbars, this will be interchangeable between each X5. I prefer the gloss model over the matte one, just looks more bling! Is that necessary for the correct mechanism of the slide bars or it may be used without (and in that case bars lose their slide option and behave fixed bars)? Is my interpretation right?
When Thule or Yakima use the terms need/needed, those items would be needed for install if you want your items to remain covered by their awesome lifetime warranty. The reason they recommend those adapter kits is they were able to test them to make sure they have the strength to support your box and all it's gear.
I bought a Thule motion XT XL for my 17 Highlander. one concert is that all the motion XT models are used same key right? my key can open others motion xt model too.
No, no worries there, Thule produces 200 key numbers: N001 to N200, plus they recently introduced a new key series N201+, there's potentially 400 key codes in circulation.
Also, they offer cylinder sets to change out your locks if you want. You could basically have multiple sets and use a different set each time you travel
There is a bit more to the Motion than aesthetics. It has better aerodynamics for fuel efficiency and the linkage system doesn’t strain the locking mechanism. It also depends on your individual needs and type of travel. For me, with 4 kids and a service dog the Motion fits our needs perfectly since the GoBags are exactly designed to stow. Thule and Yakima offer limited life time warranties for their products.

Any box will fit on your crossbars, however some of the longer boxes can have a bit of hatch interference. Measure from the open hatch to the middle of the front cross bar. With that measurement, we can let you know which boxes fit without hatch interference. In most cases the antenna is a bit flexible and can bend a bit if it is tall enough that it would contact the box. You need 50-52 inches for a XL box. I don't recall the XL being an issue on your vehicle though, but even in store I would always measure to be safe.
