    Last year was my first year taking care of a yard. I didn’t know about this barrier so I put down pre emergent then raked the yard to over-seed. All my grass seed came in fine but so did all the crabgrass and unwanted weeds! Ha been watching every video I can find and this explained the whole problem I had last year.

    Pete, I was hoping my Wildcats would get to meet up with your Tar Heels last week, but I guess it didn't work out that way for either of us this year. I just received my 4-pack N-ext bio-stim package and I'm looking forward to seeing how it all turns out this season. Keep up the great work as always, I don't know how you do it all (You Tube, GCI Turf, family...etc), but I know you have your priorities in order and I really appreciate how you don't hide your faith! Go Wildcats!

    All about timing. Here in MO we just now have a safe green light first week of April. Too many below freezing days in March. No leaves on trees yet which means no shade and max sunlight these next few weeks

    Hope your trip goes well. Kinda refreshing with your view point on spring seeding. That rain last season killed us so still playing catch up myself. Front yard is looking mint, can't wait to have the backyard on the same level. Keep up the great videos Pete!

    I actually just laid down some fescue today waiting on the rain to roll in here in Middle Tennessee. Hoping it takes off like wild fire. Growing grass after building a house is always a chore.

    Thanks Pete, I've got a few spots I am working on too, I have a small yard in Roanoke, Va. Temps will be good this week to seed those spots, plus they are under a tree where I did not put Pre-em anyway.

    There’s nothing wrong with my lawn right now and it’s almost entirely weed free but for some reason I wanna kill it all off and reseed it with your seed. I wanna be like you when I grow up Pete haha

    i was planning to just run tenacity or tupersan instead. and run it as a last step AFTER aeration > seed + fert > biostim THEN tenacity or tupersan. and hope for the best.

    Outstanding video. I’m up north and the winter did some damage. I’m definitely going to overseed this spring. My lawn doesn’t have a weed problem but it does have a poa annua problem. I’m gonna do pre emergent this fall to combat that. But I want to get the good turf as thick as possible. Thanks Pete! And thanks for the hat you sent me last year. I wear it all the time!

    Pete, we live in middle TN and just moved into a new house. The yard has recently been harley raked and ready for seeding. Even though knowing it’s risky seeding in the spring I had no choice. I ordered 12 50lbs bag of your seed with hopes of it doing well. Could you please give me a little guidance on giving the grass it’s best possible chance at surviving the summer? Thanks in advance! Love the videos

    Hey Pete, In a previous video I believe you mentioned not to aerate in the spring, until after the 5th mow.
    ?
    My plug aerator arrived too late in 2018, but I was able to slit seed. My tall fescue lawn is looking thin and I don't see much new growth from the fall seeding. I have not yet put down pre emergent, ground is just about 45 deg. Would you suggest that I wait until fall to aerate? Skip the pre emergent?

  • @dippydodaa

    Thanks for the video. Need a quick seeding tip. I'm in the transition zone but a little further north than you are. Temps have been good so now worries there. Rain is coming and I want to over seed. I mowed today. Slit seeder or aerator? That is my question for you Pete.

    If the seed does come up do you really think it will like the side effects of a 2nd preemergent application? All those plugs you pulled out were full of root carbohydrates that your grass now doesn't have to use this summer. Best wishes to your son on his up coming medical needs!!!!

    Thanks for all your help! What are your thoughts on overseeding Bermuda to thicken up a weak lawn? My concern is not knowing the exact seed to use as the HOA sodded our yard for us, and I don’t want it to be mis-matching. Hoping I can get it to thicken up throughout the year with some good consistent feeding and care!

    I'm considering getting one of those generic versions of your weasel over at Tractor Supply. I have some big bear spots where my Bermuda once lived. The closest Bermuda is too far away to run over there in good time. And the soil is pretty compacted, but it's only a small area. I was going to rough it up, throw some Bermuda seed down that I got on clearance last fall, and throw some good top dressing on top of that. Thoughts?

  • @seanmclaughlin7415
    @seanmclaughlin7415 5 лет назад +2

    The problem with your theory is yield. You may have seed wash into the plug holes and bypass that barrier, but the seed that is laying on top of the dirt will be exposed to the pre-emergent. Now the garden weasel will work, but the large areas, I believe, your yield will be lower.

    OK, Pete, I have some questions about what you said you did or were going to do with your/your neighbor's yard.
    First, you said that you put your pre-emergent down in mid-February. I'm assuming that you meant you were using Prodiamine. It's my understanding that Prodiamine should be applied when soil temps are 50-55°. Are you saying that the soil temps in NC were in that temperature range in mid-February? Also, it is my understanding that Prodiamine only has a specified effective duration so, again based on soil temps, you don't want to put it down earlier than it needs to be applied so as to give you as long as possible protection in the warmer months.
    Second, if you did put down the Prodiamine (or first app of a pre-emergent) in mid-February and it is now early April, then that is 6 weeks and a good timing for any spring seeding if you are going to do that in the spring. That would mean that it willl be another 6 weeks (mid-May) for your application of a post-emergent (Dithiophyr?) which would be good timing for a continued crabgrass preventative.
    And third, I have often heard that spring is not a good time for trying to seed because by the time warmer weather comes that the grass roots have not gotten well established and the plant is likely to die. Springtime is the time to try to control the weeds and feed what grass you have and to leave the seeding until the fall when temps are cooler. Do you agree, Pete?

    I am a little confused. You aerated the entire lawn it to "break up" the pre-emergent layer. Why did you put down the pre-emergent then? What did you mean about the "pockets for the seed to come up"?

    • @chasekinsey3152
      @chasekinsey3152 5 лет назад

      From my understanding, he put down pre-emergent to catch as much of the crab grass germinating as possible in the early spring. Now that most the crab grass is out of the way and the pre-emergent barrier is losing efficacy, he's going back and seeding. Basically, he hedged his bets on preventing weeds while still attempting to seed.

    Pete... circling back around on this video from last year. Thoughts on spring plugging? Should or should we not? Was considering spring aeration right before my second split app of PreM

    I did not have much success with this method last year. Granted, I was using "store bought seed", since GCI branded seed was not available...but my results were marginal (in some spots, no growth at all). Need to patch some spots in the back (I've got dogs), so I decided to forego pre-emergent altogether back there. I've got a spot or two to fill in out front (which has pre-em down)...so I guess we'll see what happens!

      GCI Turf Services Thanks for the reply! If you ever did sell dense shade grass seed I would love to buy some! Keep up the great work!

      @@grant8846 there is no such thing, regardless of the marketing on the bag. Trim your trees, create or expand beds and over-seed spring AND fall.

    Pete, what are your thoughts on using Tenacity instead of Prodiamine and then seeding?

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  5 лет назад +1

      you can but I am not a big fan of tenacity unless it is used on bare ground

      I overseeded 3 50lb bags on my 30000 sq ft front lawn and 2 bags on my 20000 sq ft back yard last fall. I bought a 25lb bag about a month ago to reseed some of the spots that the deer tore up over the winter and my neighbors leaves smothered about 1 week ago. My plan is to use the Scott's starter fertilizer with weed control, same active ingredient as tenacity. I'm hoping that the baby gci's will come up over the next month in the bare spots allowing me about 4-6 additional time before I have to put down barricade for the rest of the season. Pete do you think this will work?
