HIs PhD was in "Interstellar Dust", and he has been a co-presenter on "The Sky at Night" a couple of times and written a couple of Astronomy books with Sir Patrick Moore and Prof Chris Lintott. He has also done a few books on 3d photography (Stereoscopy).
This first part sounds like it his part in The Prophet's Song, without the rest of the band. That song is worth checking out. Also, Great King Rat.
