I can finally hear the contrabassoon!
That was a 10/10 performance. Alan Gilbert produces a consistently high standard from his orchestras.
🤩🤩🤩
A thrilling and noble performance! 😎🎹
Thank you!! Much appreciated!
Fantastic quality!
Fascinating repeat of the third movement as well. I wonder if that was an interpretive choice or if there’s an edition of the symphony with the added repeat?
Masterpiece! Thank you for sharing this beautiful post.
Our pleasure! Thank you for joining us!
I've been listening to this symphony played by and conducted by others for over 45 years. Some were quite good. But this rendition is without question the very best I've heard - glorious and uplifting. Kudos to Gilbert and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra (and the audio techs. I'm hoping to hear more of Beethoven's symphonies from this pairing.
Wow! Thank you so much!! We are flattered - and very happy about your (likewise) uplifting words. :)
What a great performance !..it seems that Alan Gilbert, in his life, had to meet this orchestra because their performances are exceptional and more particularly in the romantic and post-romantic repertoire for choir and orchestra, Elias, Mahler's second symphony....fantastic like this Beethoven's fifth symphony! THANKS !
THANK YOU! 🤩
An overall outstanding performance 👏👏👏👏.
My special kudos to the timpani and high quality audio!!
Thanks a lot - much appreciated! 🤩
Beautiful ❤️🙏🏻🇨🇦
Thank you!
Merci!! Nous sommes ravis!
Wonderfully performed, thank you, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under the baton of impeccable Maestro Alan Gilbert. The triumph of the famous Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No.5!
The baton or rather "Valery-Gergiew-Toothpick" was dropped at about 1:50 and AG decided to conduct the lovely/lively orchestra like a choir of human souls. Worked excellent, IMO. Greetings from near Frankfurt/Main.
Thank you, @Galina Krivulin, much appreciated!! :)
Yes, this very baton didn't last long ... :)))
Wow! What a find! He breathes new life into this old warhorse in a riveting almost feral interpretation. Love him smiling throughout the performance. He's really enjoying himself obviously.
Yay, thank you so much! And did you notice the "breaking point" at the very first beat? :))
@@NDRKlassik Yes, and you kept me enraptured till the end of the first movement. Really quite refreshing and surprising.
So is no one gonna talk about how Gilbert's baton literally snapped at the first downbeat? LOL
dadadadaaaaaa .... :)))
An der Pauke: the one and only Stephan Cürlis!
0:00 begins | 4:00 famous ta ta ta ta | 7:17 2nd movement | 12:32 mighty/proud | 15:00 flute moment
16:30 3rd movement | 24:18 mighty/proud | 29:43 fast bass | 33:41 birdie | 34:18 checkpoint near end
34:34 fancy ending begins | 34:41 trumpet to start final moments | 34:43 combo | 34:51 odd pattern begins
Fantastik!!
Brilliant! The sound is so bright! Can’t wait to a concert by them later this month!
Thank you! And we wish you a wonderful concert! 😊
That timpani was ON POINT!
That's how we know (and love) our Stephan Cürlis! :)
That was a truly splendid performance.
Thank you, much appreciated :))
Brilliant!
Magic!
Intelligent and sophisticated performance is wonderful! The best performance filled with beautiful sounds. Thank you. Akihiro Nakai. 【Japan】
17.06.2022 г.
Most underrated maestro right now.
Toll!
Herzlichen Dank für das schöne Kompliment! ☺️
❤️🙏🏻🇨🇦
This was very good. One of the big problems - in my opinion/experience - is the use of the bow, particularly, though not exclusively, in the first movement: how much to use, where in the bow to play and how to recover quickly at key moments. It requires complete agreement among the players and commitment to uniformity. These problems really seem to have been addressed and (mostly) solved here which is a real treat! And you need a timpanist who understands how important s/he is, but exercises intelligence. This was beautifully done in this performance.
In my fantasy world, I would love to wave a magic wand and bring back the great Toscanini to conduct an orchestra like the NDR EO.
Thank you for sharing your work with us like this.
You are very welcome! Let us know, if the magic succeeds! (And if it does, bring back Günter Wand, too, please!!)
@@NDRKlassik Ah ... if only!
Thank you! We are glad you enjoyed it!!
Yes!! We love our Stephan Cürlis at the timpani, too!!
Beethoven ın torunları dedelerine layık olmuşlar. Bravo Gilbert Kasırgası.
Thank you :)

Really nicely judged and played performance of a classic piece of music but happened to Maestro Gilbert's baton? It looked like he broke it across a music stand and then just dropped it onto the stage. I've seen it happen before and it's nice to see how the conductor adapts! A special note on just how superb your horn section is!
That's exactly what happened - right with the first beat. 😂 Hence the smirk!
And thank you so much for complimenting our horn section!! :)
@@NDRKlassik Thought so! It happened here in Halifax, Nova Scotia once with Maestro Boris Brott!
He was trying the Gergiev toothpick technique, by accident.
Our pleasure!! Greetings to Japan!
@@NDRKlassik bravo und danke
A truly superb performance! Hello from California!
Thank you! And greetings from Hamburg to beautiful California!
