Fascinating repeat of the third movement as well. I wonder if that was an interpretive choice or if there’s an edition of the symphony with the added repeat?

I've been listening to this symphony played by and conducted by others for over 45 years. Some were quite good. But this rendition is without question the very best I've heard - glorious and uplifting. Kudos to Gilbert and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra (and the audio techs. I'm hoping to hear more of Beethoven's symphonies from this pairing.

What a great performance !..it seems that Alan Gilbert, in his life, had to meet this orchestra because their performances are exceptional and more particularly in the romantic and post-romantic repertoire for choir and orchestra, Elias, Mahler's second symphony....fantastic like this Beethoven's fifth symphony! THANKS !

The baton or rather "Valery-Gergiew-Toothpick" was dropped at about 1:50 and AG decided to conduct the lovely/lively orchestra like a choir of human souls. Worked excellent, IMO. Greetings from near Frankfurt/Main.

This was very good. One of the big problems - in my opinion/experience - is the use of the bow, particularly, though not exclusively, in the first movement: how much to use, where in the bow to play and how to recover quickly at key moments. It requires complete agreement among the players and commitment to uniformity. These problems really seem to have been addressed and (mostly) solved here which is a real treat! And you need a timpanist who understands how important s/he is, but exercises intelligence. This was beautifully done in this performance.
In my fantasy world, I would love to wave a magic wand and bring back the great Toscanini to conduct an orchestra like the NDR EO.
Thank you for sharing your work with us like this.

Really nicely judged and played performance of a classic piece of music but happened to Maestro Gilbert's baton? It looked like he broke it across a music stand and then just dropped it onto the stage. I've seen it happen before and it's nice to see how the conductor adapts! A special note on just how superb your horn section is!
