    I'm new to Linux, and Wayland was pretty much unusable with my RTX 3060, everything flickered like crazy, especially Steam and games, I even tried different distros like Fedora, KDE Neon and also tried specific Nvidia drivers, but nothing worked, I was pretty much certain I had to unfortunately go back to Windows even though I dislike Windows and love everything about the Linux concepts, and no, using x11 isn't an option to me because it's just too old, I don't have graphical issues with it, but games and even the desktop experience is extremely choppy even at high refresh rates. Then I noticed there was a beta driver number 555, and decided I had to give it a try before switching back to Windows, had a lot of trouble trying to install it in other distros, but managed to easily install it on my Garuda Linux, and everything was magically fixed, I can't describe how everything is just so smooth in my 240hz monitor and I have no graphical issues at all, I can finally stay using Linux.

      Makes me laugh how you lot act like linux is some holy grail and you're some kind of hero for using it. Yer windows is bloated but at least it just works. Good luck realising that your apps will corrupt or crash because they need to make it work with wayland, good luck with your flatpaks missing basic features (discord) and wondering why it has no permissions. Good luck with something breaking for no reason then spend a day in terminal hoping you dont break something trying to fix it. And good luck hoping your app dont crash because of wayland/xwayland shit that linux users will have to, yet again, wait for years to catch up xD but yer, year of linux just around the corner!
      Good luck when your games dont work and you need to google the 10 launch options you need to maybe reach the main reason. But sure, Linux just works and is so good! stick it to the man

    On Pop Os, using wayland and the drivers 555.42.02, I've had almost no issues so far.
    The only exception is the Jellyfin player opening on a black screen and I can't get it to load at all (most likely a wayland issue rather than a driver issue).
    Everything else, games included worked with no issues at all.
    I'm going to wait for Nvidia to add those new drivers to their repo to be able to switch but I don't really expect it to change anything on my side...nothing that would affect me at least.

    I am still on 550 due to rpm fusion testing the new drivers. vrr is broken on wayland fir me with my nvidia GPU on kde 6.1 wayland. It does set the wrong refreshrate for the monitor which makes everything even worse. Also can't i render anything on another GPU and shiw it via my nvidia gpu if i have IOMMU active.
    Forza also does crash after some time with my old 2060 but it doesn't crash anymire on my 4090 which is weird.

      And adding at the bottom of the config this
      KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS=1

    Ok here is the deal with the stable 555 driver. It is much better than the 550 driver for wayland, i would even consider it usable, however and please bear in mind if have not messed with it too much but.. some issues still exist, some of the same, issues for example the external monitor is still bugged out in steam, i get some checker boarding graphical glitches, that resolve when you change tabs. @linuxnext  Месяц назад

      @@mrkrenek93 so outside of nvidia drivers you have mesa which includes a multitood of drivers for different hardware this includes intel, amd and now nvidia with nvk
      Mesa has a feature release which is the new fancy features that improve different drivers inside of mesa every 3 months then they have bug fixes every couple of weeks to fix bugs on the last feature release that happened that being mesa 24.1
      The next feature is mesa 24.2 and they also do RC releases meaning release candidate and that goes through testing and more rc releases until they think its ready in that 3 month span
      docs.mesa3d.org/release-calendar.html
      Nvk just became usable on the desktop with 24.1 and supports some vulkan extensions for basic vulkan tasks and some very light gaming for now
      You can test 24.2 rc versions or the git version of mesa from master meaning you will get the latest features that are in development but can cause issues as its the development builds you would be running
      On arch you can grab like mesa gaming from aur and use that as that maintainer updates his gaming mesa to the latest usually like 24.2 rc right now
      You will need to remove the nvidia prop drivers also so that you can use nvk and the vulkan-nouveau package for things like steam
      You can also look at the issues and merge requests if you know what your looking for

    My main rig has been a laptop with a i9-11980HK/RTX 3080 Mobile for almost 2 years, and I just built an All-AMD Mini ITX rig with a 7950X3D and 7900XTX. I've been team green since the 5950 Ultra (last-gen AGP) so I think I can give fair criticism to NVIDIA.
    Conclusion / TLDR: I'm done-done with them... unless their drivers become the stuff of legend, or something. The things you mention is just scratching the surface of the problems with NVIDIA nowadays.
    Rationale:
    I've had two laptops now where the kernel had no support for CPU or GPU fan control. NONE. The fans would stay at 0 RPM, and this was not obvious. On my most recent laptop I have to use a 3rd party fan control suite (MSI) and manually adjust turbo/etc for the game. Prior to figuring this out, only a handful of games would work, and all of them had thermal throttling issues / stutter, horrific frame timing, just a bad gaming experience. I didn't know how bad it was until I started getting AMD handhelds- GPD Win Max, GPD Win Mini. Those have low power AMD chips and yet ran many games faster at the same resolution than a 3080. And even at lower framerates, it "feels" smoother be it Wayland or X11. Still do with fans maxed.
    NVIDIA Optimus laptops have serious, serious issues. Switching graphics is not obvious or easy and you will be fighting half the time trying to figure out if the problem is that your game is running on the Intel iGPU.
    I built an all-AMD rig for the first time a few months ago... its night and day difference. 32:9 240hz displays, HDR, 4k resolutions.... everything, and I mean everything, just works, and its smoother than butter. Games I "sucked" at, I can actually play a bit. Now I know that the jerkiness isn't normal, its a failure of the hardware/software and I won't put up with it for a second longer.

      The laptop scene with nvidia can be rlly bad as iv heard, on desktop is alright most things work fine but i agree i also moved to amd and its a night and day difference

    • @linuxnext
      @linuxnext  2 месяца назад +2

      well honestly hdr isnt ready for the regular user, if you want to use hdr you need to use some launch commands and use gamescope to get hdr in games for now
      if you have nvidia and your using one monitor then vrr can work out of the gate with a new version of kde plasma desktop so a distro like bazzite, arch based distros, fedora kde plasma spin, kde neon will all work for you
      if your brand new to linux i would give bazzite a try
      bazzite.gg/
      if your using amd or intel gpus you can use vrr with multi monitors on a new version of kde plasma once again like plasma 6.1.1 currently

However, I don't know how to set the GPU fans speed (there is an option in Nvidia settings, but it doesn't work). VRR also works without problems, and the lack of HDR atm doesn't bother me. I have noticed that the GPU usage is much lower than on Windows too. Can't wait for steam gaming mode with nvidia cards tho. That would be awesome.

      @@pauIaaaa yeah thats something nvidia will add, they created some new code for nvidia fan control under wayland in their nvidia-settings control panel but its not ready yet, maybe their next release they will bring support for it under wayland
      For now if you want to change it you can change it under x11 by logging out, changing the desktop environment to the x11 variant, then changing it, then going back into wayland and hopefully it stays the same fan speed as you set it up as on x11

      @startjim123456 have you enabled drm modeset in your grub or systemd bootloader? Idk i have seen lots of people running wayland on nvidia with this driver without problems
      Here is one redditor who had the same issue and how this person fixed it
      I resolved by booting into X11 session first to add nvidia_drm.modeset=1 under grub command line in /etc/default/grub. Mine looks like this:
      Sudo nano /etc/default/grub
      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 quiet nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia_drm.fbdev=1 nvidia.NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1"
      Ctrl-x,y, enter
      Then update the configuration with konsole:
      sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
      And now you shouldn't have a black screen in Wayland session.
      Make sure you have nvidia-hook installed also
