Jimmy is one of those guys who no matter how many interviews he does and you hear about how “good” he is and his practices are you still just can’t help but look at him as Lex Luthor with hair. It’s like “wow I can’t believe he made a video curing blindness” and then you realize he edited it in a way to squeeze the most views out of you possible and get the most ad revenue. It’s so conflicting
But how is it a bad thing, when he invests the money he makes in helping even more people?

@kas I'm sure that if earning money was the only thing on his mind, making a YT channel with considerable dedication to charity work would not be the most optimal way to do it.
Bro could easily go the Logan Paul route: making a crappy sports drink with a ton of advertising to make it seem like some healthy super-drink that will literally cure your epileptic child (yes, he actually advertised that), or doing crypto scams etc.
But he doesn't, and I think it's fair to consider that and decide "yeah, he's probably not just in it for the money".

it interests me and sometimes scares me how reluctant people are to be critical of things they enjoy. maybe i’m just negative but i don’t think there’s any content out there that can go without criticism (necessary or not) that’s why there’s barely any videos on youtube with 0 dislikes. no matter how short, meaningless, wholesome, etc. the video is. and i don’t think that’s inherently a bad thing. but also maybe both critical and non-critical people need to exist, i don’t know.

there's a guy who makes reviews of horror video games, mostly fnaf/indie related and every thing he talks about he LOVES like he loves everything about every game, even the things that are widely accepted as being bad, he loves and find amazing.

I feel bad sometimes because people are like “I don’t want to know the bad things” but for me critiquing things I love is just,, a part of me loving them? Acknowledging their faults allows me to love them more deeply, but even that is a personal thing and it’s ok that not everyone agrees with that.

mr. beast is interesting cuz its like, hes what a lot of liberals want capitalism to be if that makes sense? like they want to believe that some charity can be enough to fix systemic issues; but what i find interesting is that mr. beast kinda shows how its never enough. theres never a point where capitalism stops being exploitative. as much as some ppl hate to admit it, capitalism is bad lol and seeing a "good" person being sucked into a v capitalist mindset like idk its an interesting dichotomy. im struggling to articulate it tho so ill just stop lol

I think this was a great break down. I hear everyone say "if he doesn't make videos he can't make the money needed to do these acts" but that doesn't take away from how it exploits these people he helps, turns their misfortunes into his own content, and the challenge videos seem torturous at times. He is using his money well, sure, but its still a huge show he puts on
Well, Life is a show, and the world's its stage. If we have to bow down to the corporate overlords American hyper-capitalism has given this world, might as well try to squeeze out as much charity and good deeds as you possibly can out of their greed for content. I get why people might be weirded out by MrBeast's content, but honestly, it's unfortunately about as morally good as big content on RUclips can get.
I live in a duplex “house” and on one side a bunch of weird shady people live, and on my side it’s me, my parents, my brother and his wife. Our side is very small and it’s cramped, the neighborhood we live in isn’t safe and we struggle every day to keep safe and hoping that one day we can actually move out. The thing is our struggles aren’t unique, my parents are immigrants and have worked as hard as any white man, or even harder. But we’re still considered lower class. Mr Beast has been an ick for me for the longest time because it really just feels like he’s making fun of people who genuinely have to struggle for any amount of

In my opinion, Mr. Beast in the end is running a business, which is why he still has to keep up with his videos being entertaining even if it means sacrificing authenticity. And in the end he's done something good, for people, for himself, and for his team. It's his job so I can't blame him too much.

He could use his position to advocate for single-payer healthcare, funding schools equitably, and paying living wages. He could hire comedians, musicians etc to promote events related to this. He wouldn't be able to solve all these problems by himself, so he'd still have plenty of possible content to make. Also interviewing people who lead these movements. He'd lose sponsorships though.

Highly recommend Winners Take All by Anand Giridharadas. He touches on a similar topic - how billionaire philanthropists' good deeds are essentially just keeping the status quo. They have no incentive to change the system that exploits people and puts them at the top. So how 'good' are their good deeds?

the way the start is a genuine fear to me as someone who does have diabetes. In any dystopian and/or apocalyptic scenario, the diabetics are FUCKED.
We already saw this with Covid! People with various medical conditions we being denied care. Even folks with developmental disabilities, which shouldn't affect their survival by itself. And now the pandemic is supposedly "over" which further endangers folks.

I think this is an interesting topic. Mr Beast would be what most people would want rich guys to be like. He gives away a good portion of the money he makes. And he records to make money to give away. Yet, it can be seen as exploitation because of the fact he records it. (Though I do agree with the points about the editing he uses for videos purely to feed into the algorithm)

I see the argument a lot that he still needs to make money, so needs to put ppl in a video, as a Disabled person who relies on charities and individuals for funding, I wanna emphasise that it is not true consent if the option is 'do it' or 'leave and don't get the healthcare that you need'. A solution I can come to is: offering to give it away to people EITHER WAY, and then asking ppl to be in the video, emphasising that they will get the money either way. This is quite literally how paying ppl to participate in Medical and Psychology experiments works! And Disabled people are *people* so you're gonna get a good amount who genuinely wanna be in a video... But refusing to fund our basic care if we don't perform for you isn't philanthropy, it's business.
