- Season 5, here we go! We almost can't believe it's finally here, since when first we started watching this series, there were already 3 whole seasons and the fourth one came out while we were watching the third. So this was the first time we actually had to wait for new episodes! But damn, it's good to be back! And this was very much a "welcome back" episode, where we got an update on what has been going on since last time. We can't wait to watch the rest of this season, which is, from what we've been told, going to be the best one yet, at least if it follows the books. We'll see! How about you all? Are you excited? And have you already watched the first three episodes? No spoilers, of course 😅

The way Amos says Avasarala like amazing, with outright awe in his voice, is really well delivered. He's so completely smitten with her and I love it.
When Amos called her Chrissy, I laughed so hard. I had to rewind that scene two or three times. I loved it when he said. “You could be both.”

I love the details they put into these episodes, from the guy walking on the "roof" on Tycho to show you that for Belters there is no real "up" and "down" to Bobbie canceling people out of her list using the blue color while the people in red where the active contacts because for Martians Red is the color for "ok" and blue is the color for "out" the opposite of what it is on Earth. This show is on another level. Glad it's back. LET'S GOOOO.
Oh, speaking about details since you noticed Earth coastline and climate change, if you go back to like Season 3 or any scene where you can see the UN flag, you can notice that the shape of the continent is different than the actual UN flag today because of the sea level that has risen.
You can see that in the intros as well in the night shots of city lights. Many of the eastern seaboard cities on North America are missing.
Yes, central amercia is missing on the UN Flag. There is no land bridge between north and south america anymore. There are also many Islands missing compared to our UN Flag. In epsisode 2, when Amos stands at the sea in Baltimore, you can see the glas roof of todays National Aquarium peaking out of the water. Google for National Aquarium Baltimore and you will know the actual sea level in The Expanse. The amount of details is really amazing.
The belters earth maps don't seem to orient north up. It's more like north pole centered (another interesting detail) so it's hard to figure out what's what in an instant.
Preemptive RIP for every science ship in The Expanse.
Harkens back to when the Arboghast was attacked and rapidly disassembled in the Venusian atmosphere by the Protomolecule. If I'm a research scientist in this show, I would not want to be assigned to any survey missions anywhere near Venus!

Lovell City is named after Jim Lovell, the Apollo 13 commander.
I was happy it was named after him. One of the unsung heroes of NASA.

Great reaction/review! The first three episodes are awesome. Just a quick note: the "knife" Amos used was his toothbrush (presumably as a shiv) - so it probably hurt like hell, but probably not fatal.
The real reason the map of Earth looks different in Marco's estimated impact display, is because they're using a different map projection than you're used to seeing.
From what I remembered, I though they were just using the Azimuthal equidistant projection which is used on the current UN flag. The sphere of the Earth is projected onto a circle with the North Pole in the center. The UN flag omits everything south of 60° S, which includes all of Antarctica, which would be severely warped around the perimeter of the circle. However, when I loaded up the episode just now, I saw that Antarctica was present and there was no distortion in the shape of Australia or other continents in the Southern hemisphere.
The show seems to be using a Dymaxion map projection, which projects the Earth onto an icosahedron and then unfolds the shape to create the flat map. It still has some similarities to the layout of the UN flag, because this particular unfolding keeps all the landmasses in one contiguous shape centered around the North Pole. But it doesn't distort the shape of the continents much at all. You can clearly see Australia's normal shape and it includes Antarctica wholly at the tip of South America. The projection also looks strange because it is heavily interrupted and they're only showing the outline of the continents. If you could see the edge of the map, there would be large empty spaces between the oceans.

To me holden is like commander shepard in mass effect and jon snow without the brooding. You don't have him uncover a galaxy wide threat and expect him to sideline himself. He and his team will spearhead this and fight it if need be. He knows humanity tend to want to quickly feel safe or go back to normalcy by fighting familiar enemies. That they make themselves ignorant to the true danger.
At last... I am looking forward to this so much, and I can tell you have as well. ☺️ I'll be happy to enjoy the ride with you!

James A. Lovell was commander of the Apollo 13 mission, hence "Lovell City"
He was also on the first tripullated flight to the Moon, but he didn't land. A crater on the far side of the Moon was named after him. I guess that's the spot where "Lovell City" stands.
You guys are in for an absolute treat this season. Dont over extend yourselves. The fact that it's weekly after these episodes will let you catch up without having to worry about falling behind too much.
The "map of Earth" at the end is from top of the north pole with the prime meridian (0 degrees) on the top of the map (instead of the bottom).
It's basically a "Azimuthal equidistant projection" and is the same used in todays UN logo.
Just to add to Daniel's statement, this version of the map of Earth also represents the relative sizes of the continents to each other more realistcally than the old maps.

In the book Filip is around 15 years old or so at this point, and Naomi hasn't seen him since he was a little baby.
But in the show he is probably a bit older like 18-19.
Loved so many things about this episode, especially the music. The return of cold opens, Amos basically off of his leash, Alex getting put in his place for being a dick, Bull finally showing up, Sakai making an appearance, so many great things to start the season off

@@garethneller8239 that's what it's looking like, and I'm all for it. We've only got the intro essentially, but it's already looking like the best book is shaping up to be the best season. My favorite shot this episode was that first Luna shot, with only music playing, no sound from the ship. It was gorgeous

Well, let me fill you in though it's been brought up multiple times in the past couple of seasons: Alex, from the beginning of this show, abandoned his wife and child. On top of that he did not tell them, so they thought he died. Last season he finally called and made it known their relationship was over. Now he returns years later without saying he was coming back.
I will watch this after I watch the show. Thanks for letting me know I missed completely that it came out already. Have a like in the meantime.
Interesting. I read Alex's son reaction a bit different. His father had not been a part of his life for years. As he gets older, Melas gets more and more emotionally disconnected from Alex - his son is more interested now in his school and his friends, than in attempting to maintain the remains of his relationship with his father. Generally, as children grow up, their connection with parents tends to weaken somewhat in favour of friends, peers, and in case of Melas it's exacerbated by Alex not being there. That's why their conversation was somewhat awkward.
It's a good explanation, I believe the indifference he is feeling is a combination of what you're describing but also comes from a place of hurt.
Also, at that age, telling your dad “I love you” where your friends might see or hear you is something many kids wouldn’t say. Especially if you have such complicated feelings about your father.

Belters grow taller and look older than their age, as we learned from the coroner on Ceres.
I once had to give medical attention to someone who was attacked in the head with a machete. Didnt crack his skull but a huge, bone deep gash across his scalp. He was completely conscious and sitting up the whole time while we waited for paramedics to arrive. The body can take a LOT of punishment.

Amos calling Chrisjen "Crissy" is priceless! Also how Amos looked at the lady snoring, she reminds him of someone. Amos has little of an edge to him more than usual. Read "The Churn!"

Two things you may have missed: The scientists at the beginning said that the fragments of Rock #9 were going to burn up in Venus' atmosphere in a few days. So between that and the fact that people can see the rocks now since the stealth coating has been severely compromised, those particular rocks aren't a threat to Earth anymore.
Earth's continents look fairly normal, but the projection used centers the map on the north Pole. The eastern hemisphere is on the left side of the map (Africa on top, Australia on the bottom), and the Western Hemisphere + Antarctica is on the right side. There are some notable differences - Florida is missing and there's a big lake / sea in the middle of Antarctica. Both otherwise it looks pretty normal once your realize how its oriented.

RE: Amos ~29:00 - I saw it summed up in an interesting way in the comment section of another YT video on Amos (I'm paraphrasing and elaborating), "Amos' character thusfar might be summed up like this; he sees good people and bad people -- He grew up navigating bad people, but he's been spending a lot of time with good people. He believes he's probably a bad person, but is learning that he finds more purpose in being around and protecting good people." I think that's at least a quick summation of his arc so far!

This episode reminded me of the old saying, which I just made up, 'Those who live by the asteroid, die by the asteroid." I imagine this will apply sooner or later, especially for the Martians who are stupid enough to trust that Marcos will not to turn their own weapons against them.

This season is off to a Great start. The quality of the production has increased a few levels.
It's fascinating to see Mars in such a sad state of decline considering how much of a behemoth it was in the Sol system in the first three seasons, but I'm glad they're focusing on it and how it affects some of the main protagonists in the show.
Thanks for getting this out so soon, you guys are spoiling us with this "movie-length" video :)
This episode did a great job of setting up the season, I can't wait to see the next episode, (not seen it yet, trying to spread them out).
Don't worry about getting videos out during the holiday, most people will be busy with other things anyway, I'll be in a cabin in the mountains with no internet, so I have that to look forward to :)

I'm so scared and sad for Naomi. She thinks so much she can save Filip, but by what we have seen, he's just dedicated to this crusade as his father. And I'm so stressed seeing the crew split everywhere, even though I am sure it's going to lead to some great plotlines. Specially Amos.

I don't know if it's the same composer but this season soundtrack sounds great. It has a bit of blade runner and deus ex mixed whenever Amos pops up.
The camera eye thing was last seen with that spy dude back in season 1. The camera guy had sensors in his hands to "see" and control the floating drone cameras, as well as some kind of feed from said cameras into his brain

By the way, the reason the Earth map looked strange to you, is because it's being shown from the pole (top of the planet) rather than the normal maps you see.

Amos is one of my favorite character's and from the trailer and this episode I guess we are finally getting some much needed backstory from him.
I love how they're kind of putting a pause on the whole protomolecule plot to focus on the interplanetary terrorist, kinda seems like they're going for a war or manhunt like subplot before going back to the wtf is up with the protomolecule and whats inside the portal opened last season don't know if I'm right but that's what it seems like

You don't have to wait for all of season 5, but by the time you've watched these first three episodes, the Churn is good to go.

Speaking of Naomi's family, the actor playing her son seems to be a bit old to play her son to me. Dominique Tipper was born in 1988 and though I could not find a biography of J.C. Owens, I guess he is not much younger than her. Not a major bug ofc, it just sets me off the mood.

This might be overlooked in the comments, but based on what we saw, and what the scene seems to be adapted from in the book, the UN science ship wasn't hit by asteroid debris, they even said they were clear of it earlier. It was something else.
Not a horrifying new protomolecule weapon or anything. Book readers will know what it is exactly, but the specifics isn't important.
Just something I missed on my first viewing!

Sonny common mang on the real realz. You’se gotsa admit this season they upped they Adobe After Effects and Cinema 4D game on fleek! Feels like Hollyweird big budget popcorn flick.
Weird too since line budget has remained stagnant pretty much since Season 1. Even though they in Baaaaaeeeezooos platform now.
Really best to watch on UHD with a medium to big LED or OLED. They are doing wonders shooting with a Arri ALEXA mini 4K using it to its full capabilities to within an inch of its life. As a former crew of shows, they gotsa commend those cats.

The asteroids are heading to Earth, and so is Amos.
I must admit I'm a little apprehensive about how the show is going to continue. Cas Anvar is out after this season and there will be only one further one. Does sound to me like they maneuvered themselves into quite a corner if they want to follow the novel narrative and finish the series convincingly.

We are at Book 5 now, and unless they adapt Book 6 into the current season as well that leaves 3 Books for one season.
And the final 9th book is not even out yet, so we have another GoT situation on our hands in that regard as well.
@@Quotenwagnerianer The showrunner said they had a plan for a six season show so they will be fine. He also said that they are not adapting the final 3 books. Trust the writers.

No, Avasarala cleared that up at the beginning of season 4. Alex is flying the Razorback because the Roci is in drydock at Tycho. It took a beating from the railgun, and as the mechanic said, it almost broke in half.

@@xXSinForLifeXx Not full team Inaros, seems like a kill em all and laugh vengeance plan is a bad idea. But the belt's been on the wrong end of the deal too long. The point is fair, belters being treated as a subclass of humans trapped in space who have had their resources scavenged and then with the ring gates being left with frak all and physically unable to hit a rock and live? Pretty bad deal.

Earth look "different" because the map is upside down.
Not really upside down but it's a projection that's not that common. It's called the Dymaxion and it was intentionally designed so there's no "up". North on the map doesn't exist.

You don't have to wait for all of season 5, but by the time you've watched these first three episodes, the Churn is good to go...even necessary to understand fully what has happened in the first three episodes.

They dropped more F bombs in the first episode than the entire preceding 4 seasons. Seriously?!? Why?!?? It’s literally ads NOTHING to the show. And makes it impossible to watch with the family. Very disappointed.
