The scene with Holden alone on the bridge of the Roci I think was to show him realizing how empty the ship was with the rest of the crew gone.
exactly. all his family was gone, and that was the moment he realized it.
same thing that I understand
Could have used less of the dramatic chipmunk then. He looked like something was up
@@2nd3rd1stI think he was still surprised that the work crew had cleared out while he wasn't paying attention.
The Expanse “I’m the best Sci Fi show in the galaxy, not your trigger for space phobia.”
Me “You could be both”
i understood that reference 👍
Amos processes grief differently than other people. When he set up the face off with the thugs on the freighter he really didn’t do it for his roommates. He needed the violence to get relief from the bad feeling that was growing inside him. It just happened to be for a good cause. There’s more background in the books. By the way, don’t let anyone talk you into reading The Churn short story before making your way through season 5 of the show. It’s better if you don’t know yet.
It's not so much "shit moves slow in space"...it's more 'shit is tremendously far apart in space". Add to it curving, orbital paths versus linear...among other things...and it can take stuff a while to get around.
A Martian "year" is almost 2 Earth years. For Jupiter, about 10 years.
And if you don't want people accidentally encountering your rocks, you've got to put it on unusual (longer and eccentric) orbits that other people wouldn't use.
@@mmattson8947 Area^3 = Period^(1/2)
These are rough numbers.
For Mars A = ~1.5 au;
(1.5)^3 = 3.375
3.375^(1/2) = ~1.84
So, a year on Mars = ~ 22 months.
For Jupiter A = ~ 5 au;
5^3 = 125
125^(1/2) = ~ 11.18
So, a year in the Jovian system = ~11.2 years
The formula written out is the “Distance Cubed = the square root of the Period”.
Where A is the average distance from the Sun given in Astronomical Units, and P is the orbital period given in Earth years.
These are their actual numbers:
Mars;
~1.524au & 1.88yrs.
Jupiter;
~5.2au & 11.86yrs.
For comparison, the rough distances are;
Mercury = 1/3 au
Venus = 2/3 au
Earth = 1 au
Eros = 1.45 au
Mars = 1.5 au
Ceres = 2.75 au
Jupiter = 5 au
Saturn = 10 au
Uranus = 20 au
the Sol Ring = 20-25 au
Neptune = 30 au
Pluto / Charon = 40 au
Playing Kerbal Space Program really drove home for me the insanely non-intuitive nature of orbital mechanics. Also, the incredible scale of the solar system. The game lets you speed up time up to 100,000x normal, but when you're travelling to the Outer Planets, that still means you're sitting there staring at nothing happening for like half an hour or more. And that after being used to just going to the neighboring planets, which only takes a few minutes, and most of that only at 1,000x or 10,000x speed. And that's just in this simulated virtual solar system that is really much smaller than our real one.
That was an Inaros rock. As it slingshotted past the sun a combination of tidal sheer and heating broke it up. Now that the fragments only have stealth composit on parts the science station could detect it.
Science nerd warning. You can't actually slingshot around the Sun. Sure, it curves the path of the rock, but the rock doesn't gain any extra speed in the same way you can when you slingshot around a planet or other orbiting massive body. When you slingshot you actually steal a little bit of the planet's orbital energy around the Sun. You could only use the Sun for a true slingshot manoeuvre if you had started from some place outside of the Solar System, way beyond the Sun's gravitational sphere of influence. Tidal sheer and heating is spot on though.
I thought it was rotational velocity, not orbital?
Should have looked it up first; you’re absolutely right.
@@MattNolanCustom Keep in mind that the Sun is not the center of the solar system. All the planets, as well as the Sun, orbit the common barycenter, or center of gravity, of the Sun and all the planets. Given that Jupiter massively outweighs the rest of the planets combined, the location of the solar system's barycenter is primarily defined by Jupiter's position, and can, depending on the constellation of the rest of the planets, even be outside the Sun's body proper.
The point is that the Sun *does* orbit around something, and can therefore be used for a gravity-assist slingshot maneuver. It would take me a while to calculate the potential magnitude of that assist, but it is definitely larger than zero.
It's also possible that any momentum transfer could be cancelled out by friction from the solar wind at any useful distance for slingshotting. 🤔
"You can be both"
Man... Amos is the master of 4 word sentences.
That scene is one of my absolute favourites from the whole show
Though the shower fight was cut up into pieces (and it's really well done), it was also completely choreographed and done in a single shot. There's an uncut version of it on youtube somewhere.
Probably my favorite season, for all the reasons you are about to see. "I hate waiting" and "You could be both" is a good indication of why.
Same. The individual storylines are awesome this season.
Long live Tiny!!!
Totally agree. 3 is manic love and breaks what you can do with tv, but 5 is crafted and acted perfectly.
I love the Amos storyline in this season and cemented for me he's one of the best written tv scifi characters.
Holden was stunned by the silence. It was the first time since they salvaged the Rocinante, that he was the only person onboard.
Going to the bathroom to brush your teeth has never been as badass
Holden's "look" on the command deck of the Roci was because the ship was so quiet. After all, nobody else is there.
You guys nailed it when you said this feels more cinematic. Season 5 and 6 are like one long movie. Buckle up for a wild ride guys!
Fuck yeah, the tension ratchet is back on the job!
Strap in. Here comes the juice!
more like season 5 and 5 1/2 🙁
"This was recorded in December"
I mean that was quite obvious considering the big ass star on the christmas tree in front of you, that is reflecting in the mirror behind you. ;)
You are assuming there is a Christmas tree.
I still think it is the star above Clarus's head that indicates she is ready to give a Quest to the player character.
Excellent! 😆@@mmattson8947
One of the reasons S4 feels weird or off to me is so much of it is planet side when we are so used to the narrow corridors of space. Because even though the corridors are small in scope, they take you all over the place so you are constantly switching locations every 2 or 3 episodes. Whereas we hunker down at the same location for the entire season. It'd be like, "OK, we're shooting our next season of X-files entirely in Hawaii."
Cinematic feel aided and abetted by a more cinematic feel to Clinton Shorter's ever evolving score.
yes, I was waiting for them to comment on the score !! SO GOOD !!
Regarding how long it's been since Inaros launched the rocks, we should just leave it to Douglas Adams to explain:-
“Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.”
Season five is the just awesome. This season shows you just how good the writers, director and crew became, and make you ask how was this not recognized more widely (Other than the obvious genre/internet show stuff.) This season is S tier in almost every category- everything falls into place. It feels like a production with a giant budget (marvel level), but it didn't have one... Chef's kiss.
I absolutely love that shot of Amos in the ‘ turbo lift’ which takes them from the ship into the station. Most of that has to be just CG but the end has him walking into the station with other people which I can’t figure out how they pulled off.
The books set up that whole "Crissy" dialog so much better where there are several instances of Amos calling her Crissy which pisses her off,"Stop calling me that", then finally her retort and it was in a more public venue.
"Could be room for both".. there's a delay, and then Avasarala bursts out laughing. In the book, she's much older.
The scene with Amos on the transport really shows the thing which was hardest to show. The advantage of a Earth Standard childhood when it comes to physicality, and why the Martians train at earth gravity to be able to keep up. Most Belters are like that (in the books, they're typically taller and more gangly than the show can do). Amos is a beast, even by earth standards, but no belter will win in a one-on-one fist fight with an earther of similar skill
@Nerdy Know what would keep me watching this channel for years? If yall watched Babylon 5 with us. Great show.
To be fair I'll probably keep watching even if you don't, but you need some kind of sci fi show to fill the gap right?
I sold my parents on The Expanse as "It's the closest thing I've seen that is similar to Babylon 5".
And they loved it.
God, HOW perfect is the casting for Marco? For one, you really can see him and Naomi together creating Fillip. For another, the actor's name is freaking Keon ALEXANDER! Like, how much more perfect can you get for a vain, ultra-charismatic narcissist who wants to lead his people to glory and victory and in so doing personally dominate the history books? In case you're wondering why his ship is called (mini-spoiler) the Pella, it's because that's the ancient capital of the old Macedonian kingdom, making the casting of Keon even more fitting. Plus the dude just LOOKS like a charismatic revolutionary leader who people will flock to once they hear that silver tongue...
first time i saw him was playing a bit role on killjoys--not as impressive but he had potential. he really stepped up his game coming to the expanse.
Actually Sh*t moves really fast in space, It just takes a long time to get anywhere because the distances are so vast...
"Slow" in space is relative. The rocks are targeted to intercept something that is spinning at 1,000mph (or less, depending on where you are) & moving through the solar system at around 67,000mph (18.61 miles per second). Force = Mass x Acceleration | Mass = Force / Acceleration | Acceleration = Force / Mass.
You remember the Belter that discovered splat = mass x deceleration (When going through the ring) - He used the planets to slingshot around. We saw at the end of last season that Marco has done the same thing with the rocks (Imagine being on a carousel/carrousel/merry-go-round/roundabout/hurdy-gurdy & you jump on, get up a good speed, then jump off to fly across to the next one). The one by the Sun got too close & shattered, the ship that happened to be there was taken out to hide anything they may have seen/recorded.
Season 3 and 5 are my favorites. I wish season 6 was longer. You’re in for a wild ride
Screaming Firehawks is some bar on Mars that can be seen in the background. It's why Alex wanted to call the Roci it in season 1.
I think just for a brief brief moment Chrissy considered it.
Amos on Earth is a treat.
One of my favorite storylines in the show.
Welcome to season 5, often regarded as the best season (and/or book), and sometimes considered the proverbial "Empire Strikes Back" of the series. Look forward to seeing what you think!
I like the pans from the Augustin Gamara memorial to Marco Inaros . Good way to like his past crimes with his future one.
Also this episode feels so good because they used the last season to set it up! That is why the season 4 felt scattered but now coming together and that feels great, right?!
The western bar/restaurant on Mars makes me laugh every time. The civilization on Mars embraced Texas and Southwest US culture.
"The Expanse" is the best show I've ever seen and I've seen a lot since the 60s😀 I love your technical observations and shoutouts to the crews. Always fun to watch along with you.
The Amos and Avasarola conversation was great. Somewhere on the web is fan art of them as a couple (clothed, but sexy) - the Music Loving Klingon
I'm so thrilled to see y'all get this far in this show. I'm absolutely certain that the entire reason the Algorithm suggested y'all to me is because you started reacting to this show, and Algo knows how much I love The Expanse. I'm generally quite resistant to 'reaction' content, but I've really come to enjoy your particular dynamic and points of view. Like, you're not just any dumbass internet randos; you both really bring fun and interesting points of view and discussion to the media you make videos about. I had literally run out of friends to show Expanse to, but still wanted some excuse to watch it all again but not by myself, and your vids really are the next best thing to sharing the show with friends who haven't seen it yet. Your response to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes only served to increase my respect for y'all as people and my enjoyment of your content as intelligently backed entertainment. I don't watch ALL of your vids, cuz a lot of it is reacting to franchises I'm not really into, but I'm really really hoping that you'll pick up more things in my lane as you get to the end of Expanse. (the other series I really watched of yours was FMA: Brotherhood). It looks like you also do reactions to books/audiobooks? I would absolutely be there to watch y'all do the Expanse audiobooks after you finish the show. I promise you, there's enough difference that it wouldn't just be doing the same thing over again, and it would be really fun to see y'all discuss the choices made to adapt the story from one media to the other.
Anyway, TL;DR, love your work, keep it up!
Well done that STBXW Alex deserved it and Bobbi was right to tell him his marriage was over.
It is 93 million miles from the sun to earth. If something comes from the other side of the sun….even at 100,000 mph (30,000 is more regular) that distance just takes time.
AH YES SHIT'S ABOUT TO GET REAL GOOD THESE LAST TWO SEASONS.
just finished the TV series, guess i have to read the last 3 books to see how the whole thing ends.
With the main characters split up, the show covers a lot of ground this season. It's so damn good.
Amos being Amos is the most Amos thing ever...
I think i fully agree about season 4. It was good in it's own way, but for some reason it didn't really feel like the Expanse for me, or atleast it felt quite different. But they got fully back on track with season 5 and 6.
Shit moves fast in space; it's just that space is THAT big.
nice focus pull!
Season 5 is arguably the best season.
welcome to season five. what you said about s4 i feel as well. most people feel like that after watching s 5 ^^
That “both” line could launch a thousand ships (one Helen).
The milliHelen is indeed the base unit of beauty in the SI system, defined as "that quantity of beauty that is sufficient to launch one ship".
I can't decide for sure but this is my 2nd or maybe 3rd favorite season. 3 is my favorite but I can't decide whether I like season 2 or 5 better.
Great start. Gets better. 😊😊
This season is so underrated. My second favorite.
One of the few times Alex goes full Alex.
Nerdy, I have been waiting for this episode since you started crushing on Amos. I think it is even more iconic than "I am that guy." And you have lots of good stuff waiting for you as well.
Murty's XO was way dead, he killed her back on Illus and I don't think he would've come back for her anyways. She proved unworthy of Amos' affection or loyalty.
I have always dug the performances in this show but by this season the writers and the actors on in sync. They know their characters and everyone is better for it. Especially Naomi/Dominique. She is so much better served over the last couple seasons and is tip top in this one.
I think this is my favorite season overall, happy to go on the ride yet again with y'all.
In the books it's more heartbreaking cos Filip is like 15 iirc? He's basically been Azula'd
Amos season 5 storyline is my favorite from the entire series
Now things start getting interesting really quickly.....
This season.. wow. This and season 3 go neck and neck.
I like watching you nerd out over the cinematography and whatnot.
You guys switched side from your normal vids, I am both confused and angry.
Update: Used my 'Enhancer for RUclips" addon extra controls to flip horizontally, everything is as it should be now.
Coincidentally great addon highly recommend!
maybe they are facing west instead of east!
I did the 'inside baseball' commentary about the craft of film making 👍🏾
The only thing that bothered me with this episode is the scene with Amos and Chrisjen. I loved the flirty banter but since when would Amos not drink a glass of the really good stuff when offered?
And the crazy things have started. 👌😊
This is the best season of the show easily. Seasons 5 and 6 have all of the actors, writers, and crew firing on all cylinders.
Ans now The Churn begins.
The penultimate season!
we cant rly get "More" of this cast as teh books ended xD there are talks about more series but it would have to be anotehr cast
?? There are 3 more books in the series not yet adapted. Many of the characters we already know are in those books. There's a bit of a time jump, but with the longer life expectancy in this future, the character ageing need not be too heavy on make-up or cgi/ai. A real life gap of 5 or so years could stand in for the 3 decades in show.
Spider hearts. 😊
definitely great!
"and then everyone will unsubscribe"
Well... Pick some more good movies and shows! Have you seen/reacted to Firefly? Breaking Bad? Then you can do Better Call Saul? I feel like those would be a similar cross section (maybe more?)
I said this before. Seaon 4 not my favorite and O basically snoozed through it. It felt weird, and the chemistry was off with the new cast members idk
I love that S5 feels like a return to form for the show ❤
It's ok. Amos will simply punch the asteroids back into orbit.
Your love of long shots will be fed well in this season 💪
Oh yes indeed. Mostly when Breck Eisner is the director of the episode.
Hah, I'm not subscribed so I can't unsubscribe after Expanse is over. Joke's on you! 😆
yep good episode
🥺clip… chop … clip … chop … the end?
best sf show ever
you two sitting on the opposite sides has shaken my world view slightly
The show is just an advertisement for the books.
I'd been waiting to see your reactions to Amos and Chrissy. I was not disappointed. X^D
So go watch Babylon 5 next...
I'm just happy you made it to season 5. I don't like season 4. I mean, there are good parts, but when you watch people react to it, once is actually enough, which can't be said about any other season. So well, I'm back. Viewership is +1. Really looking forward to this season as it's my favorite by far.
