My top tip for kitchen organizing is that the person who does the majority of the cooking is the one who should organize it. The cook’s workflow is what should determine where tools and ingredients go. If there are two cooks in a household then those people should work it out together. I don’t know what that’s like because I’ve always been the cook since I left my parents’ home.

I actually think it’s important to keep stuff like Elliot’s PH kit in the kitchen- in my experience the more I hid stuff away to “be presentable and organized” the more reluctant I was to ever use it- it felt like one more step/mess. I treat my kitchen like my art space, and like to keep as much as possible easily accessible without caring how it looks because then I actually use everything I own and frequently get more creative, rather than just having a minimal and pristine show room. I still don’t have the privilege of owning the space I live in, but it’s helped so much to make my space feel like “mine”.
Sometimes we don’t realize how many unnecessary and stifling “rules” we enforce on ourselves, when in reality doing the opposite and giving yourself permission- via having all the things at arms length rather than packed rooms away in storage- is usually the best thing.

  • @The.Caroline

Whatever anyone says about buying identical sets of spice or other storage jars, I am tired of seeing them standing in military fashion in EVERY RUclipsr’s kitchen. Your approach was spot on. They are not on display, you can actually identify the product or spice when it’s in a different shaped jar much more easily , and it saves soooo much money! I know you didn’t think things out before starting to organise, but why can’t you be spontaneous and finally settle on what’s suitable after you have used the kitchen ! Loved this video!

And doing labeling - I label everything in my household and love it ❤ Also in 20 years of living on my own I didn' break any :) All of them fits perfectly to my kitchen so no, with new spice or ingredience I'd not buying new (it would not fit anyway), just reorganize the current one. Basically, one system doesn't fit all, and it's perfectly OK :)

I have a number of mismatched storage jars, modern and vintage, on my counter. I find when everything matches, it is borderline creepy. I like to see the things I use every day and have easy access to them, so I store them in clear jars that I've thrifted or from food that I used up (i.e. sauce jars). They are designed to be used, not to be decor, which works well for me because I prefer the appearance of perfectly imperfect homes.

The "cinnamon" problem is a deeply philosophical issue. I say don't over think it and move the cinnamon around until it tells you where it wants to be, unless you happen to have enough room where the many categories cinnamon occupies can all be next to each other as in a Venn diagram, with the cinnamon living in the middle, straddling all categories therefore negating the point of dividers.

Also, I've found that using a permanent marker on glass can be easily scrubbed off when you're washing the jar. If I decide to use a sticker instead, I use the small, unlabeled ones I bought at an office supply store literally two decades ago for who-knows-what and I just keep them in the kitchen for easily finding them. Also, I always forget this and end up using two stickers instead of one, write on the label before taking it off the backing so it looks like your best handwriting instead of the scribble of "oh goodness jars are hard to write on!"

Love going through the process with you! And while I love the oil and vinegar cupboard, it seems very practical, heat exposure can make them spoil super quickly, especially that sesame oil since you're probably not going to go through it very quickly ( you should probably keep that one in the fridge actually). I would store them and least in the lowers for easy access or somewhere else entirely. Vitamins also can spoil super quickly from heat and I personally would not have them above and so near the stove.
My tip, even if it's not the most practical (although it tends to be fine in a small kitchen like I've always had) is dishes in the uppers near the stove and food storage as far away as possible.
I'm also the kind of cook that puts everything out on the counters while I'm using it so this has always worked for me!

Have you ever organized a pantry so well that you didn't want to mess it up and ended up not using is? Or when you can't find something that you know you have because you just organized?
I had to get real in my space and sometimes that means a little clutter, however, I usually find things the first try. The main rule is...when putting something away, to think, where would I expect that thing to be?
Don't you love when, say at a party or something, you can find everything you need immediately because it is organized organically.

I have 2 baskets that pull out from my cupboard, one with herbs and one with spices so I can just pull it out like a drawer and pick the one I am looking for. This was such a great video. You all are doing so much better with your content. This video was relaxed and cohesive. I appreciate that you didn’t buy a bunch of plastic to house all of that. Or make things matchy matchy. The pens and wax pencil on the glass is a great solution. Nice to see Elliot and glad you are taking your time.

Why don't you turn your glass cabinet/ appliance garage into a pantry? Chia seeds, oils vinegars should not be that close to heat source - they will go rancid very fast. Your coffee maker would be more useful and safer out on the counter so you don't have steam wrecking the inside of the cupboard! Can you put your microwave somewhere into the island?

    • @hellojocee
      @hellojocee Год назад +2

My thought exactly. The steam from coffee machine & microwave can damage the inside of those cabinets. And as a daily coffee machine's user myself, I constantly open the water lid, milk and creamer holder, coffee beans grinder lid, etc - so definitely need an open space for me to use it. It will frustate me in matter od days if I store my coffee machine inside a tight space like that.

I label my spice jars. But Everything else if I can't tell what it is by looking at it (which you can with most things) I cut off the name of the item from the bag and slide it into the jar. Sometimes I even include the cooking instructions. Saves a lot of time. But if you buy bulk and can't tell what it is by looking I like the grease pencil...good idea so you can reuse the jar for other things without much effort or waste. Very relatable video. I use Mason jars from the thrift store for most of my storage.

I have dedicated myself to eating bread spread of the same brand and buying the same kind of chickpeas. Therefor I collected so many jars of the same kind I now use for spices and larger items. Since they won't just discontinue both items I will never run out of jars :) I live in Germany though and most of the products (at least that I use) come in glass jars anyway.

I just organized and made temp containers with boxes that fit the space. Sometimes 2 narrow ones next to each other. You can tape boxes together, cut them down, etc. Once your figure out where to put what having the boxes means you just pull out and move to a cabinet or the table for sorting. You can use fancy bins, rotating platforms, labels or whatever after you get it sorted. You will probably shuffle things a couple of times when you use the kitchen. I do not keep doubles in different places because I ended up not knowing my inventory of stuff. I would start with a small box sometimes and it ended up getting switched to larger boxes when I found more stuff that needed to be grouped by that category. Shelf height and depth will bite you when something you want there doesn't fit. You cannot do it all at once so group by category and hope the height and depth of the shelf works. Some sites have tips like cut pool noodles to keep things from shifting when you open the drawer or a mat to keep things from sliding. Good luck because my sister and I bumped heads a lot. Assume there is going to be a junk drawer but try to avoid it by assigning places for those rubber bands, paper clips, batteries, etc. I collected large and small boxes for months before starting to organize. You really need to date the spices, cans, etc. because that gets out of control fast. Do it later. Some people say they make an inventory of what is in the cabinet because out of sight is out of mind. My kitchen is huge and I had no idea where my husband's cooking stuff is. I accidentally bought things I didn't need and really need a map. You need a filing area for appliance instructions, not just cookbook type stuff.

I derive so much pleasure from going through my spice cabinet. I bulk shop spices and decant them into jars for daily use. I have a food saver sealer that seals up the plastic packaging and keep the contents fresh and mainly from spilling. Rubber bands are not forever. I am always reorganizing and moving things in my small kitchen. When space is at a premium, you really use it wisely. Also, Thank you for the brief review of labeling markers.

Sometimes, duplicate items make sense. We are a work from home household, and we have a little break room space. It has a little coffee area and snacks in jars, that's for not having to go all the way down to the kitchen if being in a spare room allows you to have this still at work mindset. Keeping a spare container of stevia and powder creamer to fake an office, but at home is nothing to worry about.
    Sad warning
The room was supposed to be a nursery, but things didn't work out the way we expected. It's a little difficult not wanting to make it over too much to have to undo it when it is time. It has a daybed for a guest room, but we haven't had guests yet. We got the daybed from IKEA as a placeholder bed, intending it for guests, while we took more time figuring out our bed. It was also the room we were in just before the loss. We figured the day bed might be good when little outgrows a crib or for feeding times.

When we moved a year ago, it took a week to put things away, then another several days to rearrange everything because my initial arrangement wasn’t working, then another day or 2 to refine the most recent rearrangement. Things are pretty good now, just need a partial rearrangement which will likely take a full day.
One problem with putting your oils above the stove is that it’s likely to get quite warm there. Might not be so good for the oils (or many other food items - spices shouldn’t go above a stove either).

Large drawer dividers or bins can help organize a utensil drawer. Also, not to mess with the system you settled on (because I know how hard it is to figure out a kitchen organization), but I would recommend moving the oils away from directly above the stove since they’re more flammable than other kitchen items. Thanks for sharing!!

Protip for labeling.... use packing tape and the sharpie paint pen. Much easier to write on than round containers. Plus you can practice to get your best handwriting. I initially just wrote on the containers but changed to the packing tape trick.
Rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer will remove the sharpie paint pen from your containers. Also get both white and black pens because depending on the food items you may not be able to see the print on top of the item and where you have the container stored.
I love recycle and reuse. I saved up the sizes of glass containers I thought I would need before venturing to swap out containers. I did by stackable Square containers for spices amd seasonings based my current storage situation from Daiso so a much more inexpensive option than the Amazon route. I researched to 6 months. I like to cook so I have lots of seasonings as spices.
My sauces in the fridge I reused the squeezable ketchup and smaller mustard containers.

I live in a small apartment with shelves that are nearly impossible to move. I ended up buying a bunch of new containers when I moved in all from the same set/line because they are designed to fit together and that allowed me to use as much of the space as possible. The ones I brought with me didn't fit together as well and meant there was lost space I just couldn't afford to have. I didn't like spending the money and I have a variety of other containers the very top shelves I have to climb to, but sometimes getting sets is handy.

Awesome note for when you first move into a new kitchen. For the person who put things away/organized the cabinets and drawers they most likely know where everything is, but for others in the household it’s all a guess. Use sticky notes on the cabinet doors and write simple notes of what’s where, and after a week or so it should be easier for everyone to find things.
