Hello Chris! Since you have reacted a lot to Ado, then I have a hidden gem for you here. Ado cover of “Annoyance”, its a song she song 5 years ago when she was just 16 years old and before she got extremely famous. I promise you that, even though you already know how talented she is, what she could already do as a 16 year old will blow your mind!!!😁
Here’s the crazy thing Chris… This was the second to last song in their set. She had already been going for 2 hours and she freaking NAILS IT You should seriously watch the full concert in Seoul Korea, it’s an experience and the crowd is probably the best I’ve heard
And keep in mind that in the same show she also sang Keys to The Kingdom and Given Up. It is insane to me that after all that she is still singing so close to the studio version
I don't understand the complaint of, "it sounds like it's ruining her voice." As a music listener that's what I WANT from a scream is for it to sound absolutely primal and like the singer is tearing themselves apart. If you can do that but not actually destroy your voice, to me, that's peak. She sounds like she's going to be spitting up blood any moment, and that's metal af.
I agree, it sounds cool af. They're just saying that because they're looking for anything to hate on her and say she can't sing, her vocals are so good they're saying it's playback lol She's 38 years old, and she's been screaming like this for 20 years, if she was going to lose her voice it would have definitely happened by now.
Man, I do scream to, and I know when I do fcked up my timing. Because when it happens, I can't scream successively because of that inconvenience I have made. In connection to Emily, if she really did hurt herself by screaming; She can't do that long scream, plus that immediate scream when standing up because it would pain a lot. It could feel like literally swallong shards of glass (as per my experience). So yeah, I do really think, the best characteristic of her scream is that primal sounding too. It keeps me on the edge of my seat always, thinking if she could make it. And yeah, she does make it. So, I do too, don't understand how could anyone think of it like she's hurting herself when in fact she does it effortlessly. No signs of bulging veins on neck, or forehead, not being red like a tomato, well, it must have been lightweight for her. Additionally, to me, the cracks she makes actually makes it better for me. That raw sound that you don't expect suddenly jumps on you. It's like her signature no? You don't hear singers that often that cracks their voice as clear as Emily. Unless you literally watch compilations lol
Exactly, metal af. It seems that people complaining about her screams never heard anyone else screaming but Chester. I've heard a lot of metal screaming and this is it.
@@BrodyLuv2 'It is a 10 to 1 and you are already on that list ' for CB? How Ridiculous. I believe LoL already ask Mike to make a song fo them, far before they comeback.
Her vocal style is very rooted in punk and grunge, it feels like driving full speed at the edge of grip. It's super dynamic and expressive. You can see even in her Dead Sara stuff that it kinda emphasizes this outward anger - it's powered by rage really. Coincidentally, they used to play a very punk cover of Rage Against the Machine's Killing in the Name where Emily went nuts.
For those saying she's ruining her voice. She's been in bands for years. Came from one most recently that is not well known. But known enough to have many fans and attract the attention of well known musicians. She's given probably the biggest opportunity you could get as a rock/pop vocalist in this era. The continuing existence of an economic juggernaut of a band is now partially on her shoulders. 100's of people now depend on her for employment. Her artistry and singing have been consistent in quality over time. She's also not a kid and is 38 years old. Yeah... not likely she's risking her voice. That could be taken as an insult with all these things in mind.
ppl saying Emily dont have emotions in her singing like Chester... Chester use his pain into music, Emily is like fury, she using her rage, not pain into music i feel like... love it
You know… I was just analyzing her face, and I think where people say she does not have ‘emotion’ in her singing is her facial expressions, Chester was extremely animated, her eyes scan, but I think she is missing those micro-expressions. Which most humans when those are not present, become suspicious. Just a thought… dunno
Getting real sick of people saying she sounds bad or can't scream. She's been performing grunge music for the best part of 12 years or so. She's sick, can't wait to see how they harness her voice in the new album, Mike said in the Zane Lowe interview that once Emily started screaming with them, he knew she was the one.
I get why people are upset with the live concerts to some extent - like mike and company compose their songs to make their singer shine and their old discography is centered around chester's voice/tone/emotions towards the song. So when we think of the song we grew up loving, it's going to sound completely different since they didn't re-compose their setlist for Emily. Not to say it sounds bad, but there's a dissonance and the same peeps that hated every album after HT are prob the same ones raging after feeling it. tldr; Emily can kill it with the LP sound, imo just needed more of a discography geared around her for live shows for people to hop on board and stop bitching.
@@T_K_W this. I told someone that everytime she sings a song she does it like it’s the last time she ever will, same thing from a screaming perspective, and I love it.
I don't have a problem with people saying they don't like because it's not to their taste, but anyone saying she can't scream or is a bad singer is OBJECTIVELY wrong. A bad singer can't do that 2 hour set, hitting the screams in Keys, Given Up and Crown, while also singing Burn it Down, Lost in the Echo, Numb, What I've Done and the new arrangements of Lost and My December; all while keeping vocal integrity and intensity through the whole set. Amazing talent, which has been trained and developed, and sounds right at home in Linkin Park. Chapeau Emily Armstrong.
The thing is she can't, and you can hear it, that why she miss notes alot, that way she often drop sreams, and end of phrase. Her voice basically trying to survive rather than performing.
@@designSenji Chester was also like that at times. He wasn’t 100% live either, as most aren’t. And those old songs were written for Chester’s voice so they will never sound as good as they did with Chester. Having said that, she’ll get better at the old stuff with time. There will always be some songs out of the old stuff that will be easier for her to sing than a lot of the others because they fit her voice more. But I don’t really care about her doing the old stuff. I’m more interested in hearing the new stuff, the songs that were written with Emily’s voice. She will obviously sound a million times better in the new stuff than the old stuff. It would be unreasonable to think that she’s supposed to sound super amazing with the Chester material. I just don’t care that much about that as I do about her performing the new stuff she helped write.
The really crazy thing about the long scream is that it comes at the END of the breath / phrase…”this is what you ask foooooooooooooooooooor!” Freaking impressive
One armchair general keep saying that Emily doesn't sing right and her voice will die after a couple of concerts But her voice continues to hold and she calmly gives out such powerful screams even at the end of the concert
I was lucky enough to be at this exact show in London, it was absolutely incredible to hear this live. I agree 100%. This is better than the studio version
She just has gotten better and better with each show. Obviously nerves plays a role but now she is more comfortable we can really see how well she is doing and fitting in with the band. I also prefer the live version.
Agreed. The first show was a bit shaky but still impressive considering the vocals she had to do for the whole show. But the SECOND show she sounded a million percent better and CRUSHED IT! She'll only get better as she navigates her way singing the old stuff with the new stuff. I fully support Emily in the band. She's a beast!
Emily's long scream during the bridge makes me feel like I'm on horseback tearing through a precarious cliffside. The path is rocky, it goes up down left right, shrubs are whipping against my face. It's not a smooth ride, but that's exactly what I love about it. It's real and it's a fucking adventure.
This is what I want from rock. I want the live performance to sound better, more “real” than the record. LP may have been one of the first rock bands to rely heavily on backing tracks (albeit playing them front and centre) but they never lost track of the fact that they were an actual band
Hi Chris, been watching your channel a long time, I appreciate your enthusiasm and analysis. When I saw the LP live stream, like you I was instantly impressed. The band could have found ways to ease her into the spotlight - small private club shows with no phones allowed etc - but they were so confident in her ability that they went all in with a new album, videos, booked a tour and then did an entire concert live in front of the world to show her off. Anxiety from pressure can absolutely kill a vocalist’s ability to perform, especially when it comes to screaming, but she killed it from the first note.
5:20 You can tell even that her voice is on that line, she is doing it fairly easy imo. I like you love the texture of her screams. I just found out about Emily being in Linkin Park. I think she is doing a great job and Linkin Park will be hitting charts again when a full album drops. With 2 tracks they are already making waves.
Wasn't planning on going to the concert coming up in Dallas/Ft. Worth, but my daughter and her bf are wanting me to take them. I guess that I'm going now. Hopefully it'll be a great show.
I think I have watched and listened to that Live a thousand times and every time she just doe that little bit of cleans just makes me go yup I knew she was awesome before now she's just showing how good she is and can be. I also love seeing the little friendship bracelet she got from the crowed O2 brought the love. The more I see of them live or just the clips with amazing audio it reminds me how good the entire band is at what they do.
Vocal budgeting or not, she does something similar with Crawling in the secret LA show. She switches between clean and scream singing on every other syllable during the chorus. It's a cool effect.
Just for funsies…watch the Hamburg performance especially the inception of it. Keep an eye out for how genuinely surprised Emily was, that Hahn and Mike would suggest to play this song for the first time just like that. 😊
I still think that the song was planned, because she had the jersey on. Or they suggested to her to wear the jersey in the end and they planned to surprise her with the song.
Just from the intro of Mike saying about the new release, I know what gig this is from, O2 London, cos I was there! 🔥🤘🏻 it was an amazing time, and Emily is growing in confidence and it’s great to see
Thanks for the great response Chris, can you do a response on Dead Sara please? Emily is such an incredibly versatile singer, especially the live versions of Dead Sara's songs are amazing.
What got me obsessed with linkin park was chesters vocals. Listening to the studio version on very high volume I could appreciate the precision and the amount of melodic pitch, yet aggressiveness in chesters voice. Watching (!) the live Performances in comparison were a bit disappointing tbh. Chester didnt hit all the notes in the singing and the screams were more distorted with less pitch. Now emily doesnt have the same amazing kind of scream on record as chester but imo she's actually a better life performer.
I loved Chester in LP, but I think I agree, especially looking back at the 2017 shows.
2 месяца назад+5
100% agree, with no disrespect intended to Chester, of course. IMO a great example of this is Faint. I'll just say it, her version of Faint's chorus is closer to Meteora than what Chester did live, especially 2012 and beyond. He opted to go more nasally and removed most of the distortion from his voice, perhaps for voice saving or for the most reliable live performance, whereas Emily is hitting the notes and it's distorted AF like Meteora. Then, in the bridge/post-bridge screams, she's going all-out. Seoul's is especially impressive. There's a bit of direct feed audio in LP's FROM ZERO World Tour Part 2 [Episode 5] video, near the end, where she sounds unbelievably good.
I keep commenting this but I can't get over how well placed the long scream on "This is what you asked for" is. It's a fat middle finger to me personally who doubted her, as a fan of LP for the last 20 years, when she did covers of Chesters work. I can do nothing else but respect that.
Mike’s anecdote on Jimmy Fallon, regarding his eldest daughter’s guitar practice for a talent show, speaks volumes of his humility and patience. Tack on immense perceptive ability, and marketing genius. From the barely advertised “Launch Concert” in LA, to the single releases, to the ever expanding concert bookings. Equal parts bold and cautious, driven to perform, but unwilling to take his friends, family, and collaborators/crew over a cliff if it didn’t pan out. Class act, through and through. Can’t wait for what comes next… esp on Nov.15! Thanks
This is literally the happiest I have seen Mike in a long time since the death of Chester. It put a huge smile on my face seeing him smiling and having so much fun in a long time. Mike is back to his old self. Thanks to Emily for making linkin park whole again.
They are getting backlash? This is pure Linkin Park at their best! Thank you Mike and Emily and the rest of the band for unlocking core memories from our teens. What a truly amazing revival.
I saw a fan made video and Sara went down on the stage during that scream. It was cool how this video showed her popping back up at the end. Great singer.
Loving your insight yet again Chris, especially addressing the constant takes that 'shes gonna break her voice' from the armchair experts, and the delight you have in her volatile, dynamic approach. Emily is CRUSHING it, not just in the big, screaming moments, but the clean, melodic and soft emotional parts too. Judging by her Dead Sara gigs online, shes just getting started too! Queen 👑🔥
Hey Chris loving the content, can you make a video on the band Too close to touch there vocalist Keaton was amazing. The song Sympathy would be a great choice
I'm not a LP superfan, although I do like a lot of their songs (I'm more of a punk rock guy). When I heard a female (I knew/know nothing about Emily) was taking on the lead vocals, I was definitely intrigued. But not really enough to seek out more info at the time. It was only after seeing so much hate and online backlash that I had to come see for myself. And I can safely say, IMO, anyone hating on her singing are incels living in a dark, depressing basement. She sounds amazing!!
Great video, little reminder that the king of vocal theatrical metal diction kamelot is an absolute must see. I will suggest under grey skies live for the ballad or my sacrimony live or just ask the charismatic voice for advice. ;)
Chris, can you please consider doing a tutorial on mic techniques and the differences between screaming into a live dynamic mic versus a studio large diaphragm condenser? Thanks!
And she's only going to get better at doing that 15 second scream live. She made it to about 11 or 12 seconds here. Still impressive but I think she'll get to 14 or 15 live with time :)
I had no idea they'd released a live version.... let alone the live version where I was actually in the crowd! This was impeccable Live I have to say! Emily fkin rocks it.
I'm dropping the bomb: with her voice, she can sing and be the beauty, or scream like a raging beast. The beauty & the beast... the angel & the demon... not the same (they themselves don't want "the same"), but the PERFECT legacy: love her, love their old&new sonority, I'm totally in.

100% agree.
I loved Chester in LP, but I think I agree, especially looking back at the 2017 shows.
Yh she kills it and gets better every show. Can't wait to here her perform more of From Zero once it releases officially
I adore your style! You’re doing an excellent job.
Thanks
"Vulnerable, volatile, textured"🎯🎯🎯
This is literally the happiest I have seen Mike in a long time since the death of Chester. It put a huge smile on my face seeing him smiling and having so much fun in a long time. Mike is back to his old self. Thanks to Emily for making linkin park whole again.
This feels like old and new at the same time
YESSSS
Yesss, exactly that
They are getting backlash? This is pure Linkin Park at their best! Thank you Mike and Emily and the rest of the band for unlocking core memories from our teens. What a truly amazing revival.
I think that once she gets used to this kind of responsibility, her voice will shine even more! It already sounds amazingly good!
i'm absolutely loving the new lineup the more we hear. i understandably had worries at first, but LP has put every goddamn one of them to rest lol
This is what you asked for🔥🖤
Mike said when he first started working with her her voice already sounded like it had a bit crusher on it.
This song is a mix of Bleed It Out and Faint and I love it
Love the little guy on the drums behind Chris 😂 🫶
I love her voice! Greetings from Portugal❤️🇵🇹🤘🏻
I'm totally in love with her ;)
Coming into LP is holly bless
I saw a fan made video and Sara went down on the stage during that scream. It was cool how this video showed her popping back up at the end. Great singer.
Loving your insight yet again Chris, especially addressing the constant takes that 'shes gonna break her voice' from the armchair experts, and the delight you have in her volatile, dynamic approach.
Emily is CRUSHING it, not just in the big, screaming moments, but the clean, melodic and soft emotional parts too. Judging by her Dead Sara gigs online, shes just getting started too!
Queen 👑🔥
Мне очень нравится,когда среди воплей и хрипа вдруг проявляется чистая высокая нота,молодец Эмили❤
Rage screaming is what she is good at. Reminds me a bit of younger kratos
08:40 Thank you for reassuring me about Emily's voice. I'm always wondering if she's hurting her vocal chords
I was there that night and she was absolutely insane, I stood there amazed how she just kept going and going with the scream 😂
Emily is awesome
I really love that "Try to hold it in" part. The way she can do that clean high note. ❤️
Hey Chris loving the content, can you make a video on the band Too close to touch there vocalist Keaton was amazing.
The song Sympathy would be a great choice
Emily the Queen 👑
Emily is so amazing
Love Emily, she’s the best!
I have seen Linkin Park live twice, and they were absolutely amazing. I need to seem them Live again!
I was there at this show, she fucking killed it even after a 2 hour set she still brought the energy
Emily's voice give me auditive pleasure.
It’s important to note this was the second music from the setlist. After that she sang the intere performance very easily!
Great video, little reminder that the king of vocal theatrical metal diction kamelot is an absolute must see. I will suggest under grey skies live for the ballad or my sacrimony live or just ask the charismatic voice for advice. ;)
She stalks the stage like a lioness. Her energy is nuts!
6:47 Its almost like a firecracker. It is explosive. You explained it very well. Awesome analysis, I'm new but every video has been in point.
She's awesome
Thank you, thank you for reviewing this live version 🤘🏻
Emily is outstanding.... I love this new Chapter of LP.
Chris, can you please consider doing a tutorial on mic techniques and the differences between screaming into a live dynamic mic versus a studio large diaphragm condenser? Thanks!
And she's only going to get better at doing that 15 second scream live. She made it to about 11 or 12 seconds here. Still impressive but I think she'll get to 14 or 15 live with time :)
best way I can describe her voice is raw, and it works. Love it.
I had no idea they'd released a live version.... let alone the live version where I was actually in the crowd! This was impeccable Live I have to say! Emily fkin rocks it.
It's probably one of her well trained techniques to roar like that.
Emily and Lizzy Hale. Rock Goddesses.
This IS what we asked for!
She's THE ONE.
the "in butt" note live without the rasp is so much better
