That's the thing that stood out to me. After The Scream, she has a sharp intake of breath to lead into the next part. Sure it could just be editing, but we've all heard it live as well, so its not far off from reality.
Chester had the voice of an angel and sang with so much vulnerability he was really one of a kind. Emily has impossible shoes to fill, but not only does she have talent and technique, the headstrong rage is almost polar opposite to Chester. You don’t find new art in imitation. They have a vision for a new beginning and I wish them success.
You talked about how they chose to keep Mike Shinoda, but something a lot of people don't know is that the one who formed the band was actually Mike, so that is why it still sounds like LP, because Mike is the one who writes most of the songs. Their creative process usually involves Mike coming up with the song and lyrics, recording the stuff by himself and then consulting with the other members how things can improve. Chester had very few songs directly credited to him. Mike is a extremely talented artist, in all aspects.
yeah many people dont know that chester wasnt even in the band from beginning. he was one of the later members joining the band. And also he did not have that much impact on the songwriting. Most of the time Mike told him how to sing/scream his parts. You can see that in many studio recording sessions. a few of them are also here on youtube. Just to make it clear: I dont try to make chester smaller as he was, but many people tend to make him bigger as he was. And thats not fair for the other Bandmembers especially Mike.
There is absolutely no replacing Chester. Period. Point blank. That said… Emily’s voice is incredible. I love her sound. This song is great. I got old Linkin Park goosebumps with that sustained scream. Good stuff Emily 🤘
Not just Emily, but it also describes the situation of the undisputed GOAT of League of Legends, Faker - he's the player that enters through the door at the end. Not going to explain the entire backstory but it 100% describes them both.
I think they knew there would be haters and wrote this thing a long time ago in anticipation. Mike kept saying to chill and give her a chance, he already knew this song would pound the haters into dust and probably felt bad knowing it was coming while everyone was hating on Emily. This song certainly sat the haters down, whether my theory is correct or not.
Emily straight up silenced all the haters with that scream I felt it like she deliberately screamed at "This is what you asked for"; almost like saying "I can do it too, you know?". She may not be Chester, but surely she is Linkin Park and keeps his memory alive in all of us.
Exactly, it took me a bit to get comfy with her and you heard her nervousness at the first live stream. But in the end (!) she is a really really great fit for LP. Thanks at Mike for seeing the possibilities and potential.
I'd argue that it felt like Chester screamed for a reason, Emily seems like she just screams because she can. People don't want the scream without the emotion behind it. It's hollow and that lyric was clearly put there in order to attempt to silence people who say she isn't a great fit. I think most diehard fans still aren't sold.
Haha so much for " no she's isn't a replacement and this is a new Linkin Park" , only to scream exactly like Chester and songwriting that suits Chester's voice .😂
@@xborg3236 she was receiving a lot of criticism saying she couldn't scream or sing LP's older tracks, this was her proving she has the chops to sing everything even up to given up.
With all due respect to Chester, Chester's 17-second fry scream in "Given Up" has syllable pauses, allowing breaths. Emily did "THIS IS WHAT YOU ASKED FORRRRRR" all in one voice for 16 seconds. Epic.
@@adambydand1214Emily also starts splitting the scream into two parts to manage the concert. Therefore, Chester began to divide it into two you still haven't noticed that Emily uses the audience a lot in the important vocals for the break. and most importantly, it has backup vocals with playback, which was noticed in Korea
Emptiness Machine was Linkin Park saying 'Hi, we're back, this is our new friend Emily', and Heavy is the Crown is Linkin Park saying 'And this is why we chose her to be our new vocalist.'
She can do it, but she cant sing the old songs like Chester, it just doesnt sound right to me when I listen to her, but as to all the new stuff, rock on
@@MislavestinaThat's because the old songs were designed specifically for Chester, so yeah, it's gonna sound a tad off. But I have confidence that Emily can bring Linkin Park back with the new songs designed for her.
I heard somebody point out that her scream was even longer because she didn't begin with the scream, she began by singing 'this is what you asked' and then started screaming on" for" all in one breath.
She really took a deep breath before she startet that part with the scream. You can hear that point very clear. This is very awesome. Singing and screaming all at once...😍
The intake of the breath at the end of the scream is so organic, so authentic it brings a smile to my face every time. I love that they leave those intakes in each time she sings "this is what you ask for" *gasp* hit the next word hard "HEAVY is the crown!" amazing.
I heard you sing 🎤 the other day, my Gawd what a gift to the world! You’re such a positive person! The video/song is incredible! What a way to honor Chester!!!!
for those who don't know anything about LOL esports. The 5 players at the end are last years champions T1 from Korea(currently considered the highest level region) who from left to right are Oner, Zeus, Faker(considered the best player in lol esports history has 4 worlds 2 MSI and 10 domestic championship wins. referred to as The Unkillable Demon King in Korea), Gumayusi, and Keria.
It has a lot of players in it... Bin, Chovy, Caps, Massu, Razork and more... also the Koreans HATED video because they had to much animated Linkin Park in it
@@rozkie Brother, even the Korean pros couldn't tell which character was them and though everyone was Deft. I suppose they are racist too? They were all drawn with the same facial structures, and looked nothing like they do irl. Asian people don't all look the same mate.
I was in Hamburg when the song was released live. There she did the scream for 11 seconds. Which is still impressive at the end of a full concert. This is literally what we asked for. 🎉
I was waiting for your reaction to this song! I wasn't disappointed! Also, two things when you hear/analyze the scream is that you can audibly hear her take the deep breath before the scream and just after it and continue the song right after that! Usually that's taken out in post, but I'm happy they kept it in to show all of that was one long scream! **chef's kiss** Great reaction as always!
Two things; Linkin Park just released a live version of this song. You should check it out. Also; what I thought was really cool with that scream; is the inhale of breath at the end of it.
Yeah the breaths add to the intensity of the song. Doing it live she goes right back into the chorus instead of the break we get in the video. She doesn't hold it quite 8 bars like she does here, but she doesn't need to. It's impressive enough however long she holds it. IMO as soon as I heard her drop the chorus in The Emptiness Machine that was all I needed to hear to convince me.
@@najrenchelf2751 you seen the video? throughout the entire song she just looks like she is not there - i cant describe it, and i dont know if it feels eerie or whatever, but she seems to plough through all of it, as if its "just another Tuesday" in a job she doesnt like or dissociates from
@The Charismatic Voice The video depicts T1 the legendary league of legends team they have won many worlds championships , and the guy that handles the crown and in the end opens the door and joins the fight is Faker one of their players which is arguably the most successful e-sports player in history and rightfully holds "the Crown" .
Talk about pressure....the night Emily was introduced to the masses was on a live setting in Burbank, CA where they performed last Sept5. One cannot deny that she was nervous and apprehensive, who wouldn't with that huuuuuuuuuuge shoes to fill. She actually cried and broke her voice on the song Waiting For the End. As their mini-world-tour got along, she did improve and relaxed a bit and actually did better.
As a die hard fan since 2000 I embrace and support Emily. Welcome to the family! I miss Chester like no ones business but Emily, I love your singing. I hope for Linkin Park's Renaissance. Even after all these years, I'm learning new stuff. I used to think Chester was the King, and Mike the General. But Mike Shinoda is a King maker! Absolute genius! Love you Mike! You're incredible!
The Emptiness Machine is a good song, but *THIS* is Linkin Park. It’s an absolute banger of a track that stands up to their best and it’s got me really excited for the new album!
Massive W for Riot to get such a big name again. The Imagine Dragons track was a banger and then they just faffed about for years. They finally got a big name again and the quality returned back to the old levels for a world's track.
Nice, surprised you started with this one. the Emptiness Machine would have given you a better feel for Emily. there are also live versions that you should check out to give you a better feel for her voice and style.
Awesome video as always, Elizabeth! It would be so interesting to learn more of the specifics about how Emily creates her sound! (A little context for the video, the people defending the castle are the former World Champs T1, and the last one to walk out (the one who put the crown down) is Faker, the most famous league of legends player ever (nicknamed "The Unkillable Demon King"). The battles are the players playing champions that they may have some notoriety on and represent the different teams competing for the "crown".)
Footsteps are crazy important in video games. In a first person shooter, footsteps and environmental sounds can be crucial information to you as a player. They can indicate direction, speed and even the gear an individual is equipped with, just like it's an important skill to be able to identify weapons by their sound to know what you're up against, footsteps can really make or break a game.
I used to be an absolute MONSTER in Left 4 Dead 1&2. I always had scores 4x higher than the rest of my team combined, and could solo hard mode even if I killed the 3 bot players. SO MUCH of it was because of sound and my ability to hear zombies through walls and headshot them without ever even seeing them. I just KNEW where they were, and my teammates would see notifications pop up about X killed a Smoker, X killed a Boomer, X killed a Hunter, etc, and they'd be like whereTF are any of these Specials you keep killing? I never even SEE them. lol
Heavy is the crown was actually made for League of Legend but you can feel how it is accurate for Emily, cuz Chester's Crown is soooo heavy, but she handle it her way and i love it !
They’re writing music/songs that can work for the entire band. So many different ways to interpret them. My daughter and I love finding meanings in songs and the greatest thing about art, it’s open for interpretation unless the artist specifically states a specific intent or meaning. Never heard of LoL until this song so I can guarantee you that this song isn’t specific for just a video game.
I see a number of people counting the seconds of that scream, so in music notation terms, that was an 8 1/2 bar masterpiece of a scream. Thanks Elizabeth! I've been looking forward to this analysis since the song dropped.
In my opinion, The Emptiness Machine shows of her voice more, the girl really surprised me in a positive way The music is just like before but she brings a hole new dimension Can't wait for the album, I think it can be really interesting
AC/DC & Alice In Chains redefined themselves after tragic vocalist deaths, and I think Linkin Park is en route to be the next in that line to resurge and reinvent themselves, and I am here for it! Emily has a strong sound and I look forward to hearing what she emotes on the rest of the songs we haven't heard yet.
Hopefully Drowning pool can ride the wave as well, now that they have a new single out. They deserve to be up there with LP. They're just as iconic when it comes to nu-metal bands of the early 00s.
Fleetwood Mac went from sounding like B.B. King with Peter Green to sounding like Taylor Swift with Stevie Nicks and the complete shift worked for that band.
Watching you freak out about it being an amazing animation video and a video game collaboration and seeing you explain e-sports etc was a VERY pleasant surprise! Love that you're paying attention to it as a whole, even though your focus is the vocal analysis!
This is what you asked FOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRR!! 16 seconds one second less that Chester's iconic scream. Perfect way to pay respect and show she can hang without trying to one up him.
but Chester use a lot of techniques in that scream, go high and low in that time, synchronizes with the melody, Emily makes a scream that does not change, it sounds inharmonious and very forced to me and it is not because is in linkin park, i feel the same when i listen in his old band...but well, everyone has their tastes
@@Grumakhai I Mean, sure. But that’s irrelevant. Live doesn’t make it better. I’m asuming that you’ve never heard of a female singer back in the early 2000’s being having her entire carrier over because her voice auto tuned sound broke mid live and that she actually sounded terrible without it? Not saying that it’s the samething. But, just a food for thought.
While I'm hesitant to break down vocals as a mere instrumental component, I can't deny Emily Armstrong slots in really well. She's evocative of Chester's delivery and has enough personal flavor to avoid simple replication. Sounds great.
I’m a long-term fan of Linkin Park, best ever band. I've had more than my fair share of mental struggles and Linkin Park has saved me more than once. Linkin Park is so good, and Mike Shinoda in my view a hugely underestimated contributor that has made the band what it was and always will be. He’s the creative genius and foundation, has taken time to redefine and create the new LP. And it’s so good and quintessentially Linkin Park! There will never be another Chester, but that's not the point. Listening to Emily on their first 3 new songs just tears me apart. She's so good and a perfect fit for Lincoln Park 2.0. They still have all of the elements of what made LP brilliant, but have not attempted to replicate Chester, but to bring the same energy and vocal fierceness that will have always done Lincoln Park proud. I am for one, so excited about the new album. RIP Chester you'll always be missed and always be loved forever. In my view Emily is worthy new element to the band and her 5new performances are just WOW! I cannot wait for their tours in other countries in 2025, when they come to Australia!
Yes!!! The one I’ve been asking for! You’re my favorite one on any topic on any genre and any group, but LP is my favorite so I’ve been waiting for you to react, also could you react to their live performance, please
I get why some may have suggested this over Emptiness Machine- and that reason is the scream- but EM shows off a better range of vocal ability, that would have been a more ideal place to start with a new vocalist.
"THIS IS WHAT YOU ASKED FOOOOOOOOR". I love Emily in these 2 new songs and especially here with that scream. Love the new direction and can't wait for the album in november.
I really hope you keep doing songs from this album, they're all amazing in their own right, particularly "Good Things Go" imo. Emily did such an amazing job, and really showed off her range as you progress through the album.
The "featuring Linkin Park" is just something Riot Games does with the title of all their Worlds Anthems - it's very much a Linkin Park song that will be on the new album. And Emily is an amazing addition! Her voice is perfect for the band, and I am SO excited for their new album!
Most if not all of the previous Worlds songs exist at the behest of Riot only. Warriors is described as "a creative collaboration by Imagine Dragons and Riot Games". Riot Games Music Team, Sebastien Najand and/or Alex Seaver of Mako have their hands in every song from Worlds Collide to Burn It All Down and again with Gods. To me it looks like Star Walkin' is a legit Lil Nas X track, I don't see the usual suspects in production credits and the music video on Riot's channel is titled "Lil Nas X - Star Walkin'" instead of the "featuring" all the other songs use. Then again the dude was in deep with Riot that year so I don't know for sure. This year for the first time it feels like Riot just went "Wait we need a Worlds song, hey guys can we use your song pls?". They have zero involvement in the production and don't make any collaboration with the band besides the use of their song + the finals opening ceremony live performance. Those things considered I think it's very fair to wonder why it isn't titled "Linkin Park - Heavy Is The Crown".
@@Chromodar Good info - while I've watched all of the Worlds anthems, I didn't know much about them. I do have to wonder how early Riot got involved in this song, though - because animating the band into the music video had to have taken some time, and Emily wasn't announced publicly all that long ago.
@@Ryan_Crown That's a good question. To add to your point, the sentiment that the crown is heavy implies defending champions but we didn't even know if T1 would qualify until a month ago. I bet Riot were working on several different options and didn't finalize which one would be used until very recently. Presumably the video for Heavy Is The Crown was already some way along at that point and all they had to do was finish it up.
@@MC-dh5ks I've already explained where/how I got the opposite idea: As far as I can tell literally everyone who worked on the song (both writing and production) were affiliated with LP and none of them with Riot (unless Mike Elizondo is somehow secretly a Riot guy). Additional to that, it seems weird that the song would premiere at an LP concert two days before the Worlds video release if it was made to order by Riot. If you don't mind me asking, where do you get the idea that it's tailor made for this year's Worlds? Just because the lyrics fit with Faker defending champion, or is there something I'm missing?
It's always amazing watching someone who is passionate about what they do. I may not understand the sound design and voices, but watching you be so passionate and excited is really awesome. That being said, I love Linkin Park and watching this video and getting into LOL Worlds this year for the first time was a great experience. The other songs used at worlds were also fun to listen to.
The best part of her scream is that they leave the breath in, that she takes to go into the next verse, almost like they wanted to prove that she actually held that the whole time and it wasn't a post production trick.
Emily has quickly become one of my favorite vocalists. No one can replace Chester, but that's not the intention for this new iteration of the band. Her vocals are nuts.
I like how you spend a lot of time explaining exactly what led to the phenomenon of Linkin Park anime music videos. Longtime fans of the band know that the hallmark of a good Linkin Park song is setting it to anime.
Wait till she watches the live version and sees Emily hold the scream damned near as long and almost as flat, and still managed to roll straight into the next part. Chester is gone, but linkin park is not.
12:30 Props to you for giving credit to eSports players! I only watch League of Legends but I know that for most eSports people train very hard and put in lots of work to compete and be the best. It is so popular and the organisation and production that goes into it is second to none!
Linkin Park exploring the gaming side is not new, but it wasn't that common either. I'm Brazilian and I got to know the band through the game Need for Speed, where the famous song "Numb" was in the game. Even though I didn't know English, I loved the music, then I started to delve deeper into the band's songs and some time later (when I was 10 years old) I started to study english, and this didn't just happen to me, many Brazilians (many indeed) like Linkin Park, it's no wonder that the band is a worldwide success. I confess that I'm only 18 years old, but since I can remember being human, I've always loved Linkin Park, and it was because of the world of games that I got to know the band, and even though I'm younger than the band, I always listened and continue to listen every day, to all the songs, Linkin Park brought me a lot of joy, and certainly to many other people, I have no doubt about that, and I'm even happier to see that even after a certain amount of time the band hasn't died and that there are still people who started listening to or are remembering the band, Even though rock is starting to become "extinct", it's an honor to see the band coming back... And forgive me if I wrote something wrong, I haven't mastered English yet... -Jackson (From Brazil)
Almost all of their early artwork was very heavily video game inspired, and a lot of early Mr. Hanh's stuff was video game adjacent. They've always been gamer nerds, and I think Mike especially
Your English is amazing! Welcome to the Linkin Park fam. No matter age or if you just hear them recently what matters is what your heart feels. Keep rocking on dude!
A queen of the singing arts sitting on a SecretLab Diablo IV throne ! What a perfect woman! As usual, a superb analysis of a cool song! Keep up this level of quality!
Mike is an absolute underdog of an artist... So versatile in his creations yet unrecognised by many. Emily is a gem found in a coal mine post Chester ❤ LP
I like a thing that I read. "Emily is not Chester, but she IS Linkin Park!" After listening to the 2 new songs it feels fresh yet familiar and I love that.
Emily is incredible, she has a great range, Dead Sara is one of my driving favorites - they go from hard punk with Lemon Scent, weatherman, UnAmerican and then mellow out with Sorry for it all and another favorite Anybody. She first came to attention when she did a duet with The Offspring on their remix of Gone Away, so anyone who’s been following her and Dead Sara for any time isn’t surprised by her ability to scream :)
I absolutely cannot recommend Dead Sara, Emily's other band, highly enough. Been saying it since I discovered them over a decade ago, she is one of the best vocalists in modern rock, one who (until now) people outside of the industry just seemed to ignore. All of their material is incredible, but if I had to suggest one track, it'd probably be "Sorry For It All", from their 2012 eponymous debut.
While I disagree, I thought there were only two good songs on an otherwise mediocre album, I also have always said Armstrong should be huge. I'm glad shes getting more attention. Before I knew LP picked her, I heard their new song and I instantly picked her out. She's a modern Joan Jett
I recently discovered Dead Sara Thanks to LP and I was deeply and pleasantly surprised by It. I absolutely love Sorry for it all, heaven's got a back door and Anybody in particular.
Weatherman is incredible. I'm a huge Dead Sara fan. I have one of their lyrics tattooed on my arm. I'm really sad that Dead Sara is now dead. They claim they aren't but I'll believe it when I see it. Plus it will be different. They will probably be billed as Dead Sara featuring Emily Armstrong of Linkin Park and will play in bigger venues. Which will make them less accessible to talk to afterwards. They are all really cool
Dude I almost cried when she did her scream in this song for the amount of respect you could feel for Chester is real you can feel every bit of emotion in her scream
You should listen to Emily singing "Keys to the Kingdom" in Linkin Park world tour. I suggest the london or the seoul concert. It was amazing, how she was able to scream so much towards the end of the concert.
Well well well in the end she talks about watching them live to see how it would carry.. and now we do have the live video! Would be amazing to go back to it and see your reaction too (I know is not long time passed and would be watching sing the same song but we all would love your reaction anyways 😅)
So many fans that have stuck around have said that THIS song in particular is Emily's test song. When Chester was around, he, & Linkin Park, were known as one of the greatest Numetal bands. They were kings. When Chester passed, it felt like the throne was vacant for so long. Now, Linkin Park is back, & Emily has a lot to live up to & prove. Heavy Is The Crown that Chester left behind, & Emily is slowly keeping that dream alive. No one can replace Chester, but she could live up to his legacy Also, interestingly, where Chester's screams were filled with pain, Emily's sound like there's some anger behind them. Maybe a good transition into a new era of LP? 👀
@@taifunkchichrisholy shit that's actually so perfect and spot on too. I honestly think the new music especially Emptiness Machine is like the soundtrack of the LP fans that grew up on their music and now are jaded and pissed off adults because the world really just didn't work out the way we imagined. This new era of LP couldn't have come at a more opportune time.
i love so much that you're doing research on vocal techniques now, you can comment on screams like Emily's with proper knowledge and it's so fascinating
there's also a live music video version of their London performance of this song. I'd really love to see you react to some of their recent live shows. at least the live songs on their channel cuz they did upload a few. the way she sings Lost, Keys to the Kingdom, and Friendly Fire are so amazing.
I love that you were geeked out about the song being the theme song for the League of Legends World's 2024 tournament! I hope you've had a chance to go back and watch the performance of this song live in Paris for the championship finals as I know you love analyzing a live performance more so than a studio recording. Truly amazing and shows exactly what you said about the popularity of League that this was in an arena in front of thousands!!! So incredible to see these two worlds collide, great reaction Elizabeth!!!
I was so excited to see you react to Emily's 17 second scream in the song at 17:03, and the look on your face as it progressed didn't disappoint at all!
Elizabeth, if you havent yet you should check out Arcane. its animated by the same people who animated this music video, Fortiche. you dont need to like or play league to enjoy it and its a great story. will 100% make you cry.
Heavy is HER crown!!!! I love Emily and her sound and so excited for Linkin Park. I went to their live show at Barclays last month and it was filled with goosebumps and tears! I can’t wait for you to analyze the live and The Emptiness Machine.
How I felt, when I first "encountered" Emily? Let's go back to Chester for a minute first. When he passed, it stung in my heart, like after a really ugly breakup - and the general feeling of "heartbreak" for the longest time after, every time I heard a LP song with Chester in it. But with time, I accepted the reality. Fast forward to when I saw the reveal of Emily. I felt like when you see the ex (the one from before), with a new partner. A "imposter". It seemed "wrong" at first. No one would ever be able to replace Chester!!! And honestly. I never thought I would be able to "accept" her by Mike's side. But (despite of the "controversies") I've come to actually LOVE Emily!! And the moment I totally realized, that she was NOT trying to "replace" Chester, but (in a way) "honor" him, was when I saw the live version of "Heavy Is The Crown". WOW!!! When she did that scream, and she pretty much held it for (mostly) as long as in the studio recording................... Seriously. I stood up, and actually applauded her!! Right there, in the middle of my "gamers lair"!!! And I realized, that Emily IS the one to stand by Mike's side!!! 🥰 P.S. When you think about it, it's really not that different from when AD/DC lost Bon Scott, and they found Brian Johnson instead. And that went pretty okay, don't you think?? 😉
I’m loving this continuation of Linkin Park and so glad you analyzed this!!! On another note, I’ve always wanted you to analyze their live performance of QWERTY (I think Tokyo 2006 is the best video), super impressive switching between clean and harsh vocals. Pretty pleaseeeee :)
The Crown they speak of is both Faker's and Chester's. It's impressive how they manage to bridge the gap with lyrics that work well both for fans of the online game and for fans of the band (who know little of the game).
Not at all, "the crown" is a direct reference to the League of Legends World Championship. In obscurity, it's a reference to the age-old idea of the burden of leadership or being the best at something - you may wear the crown today, but that's not guaranteed tomorrow unless you work hard to keep it. "The crown" of being the LoL World Champion is referenced in most of the World's songs, and to try and insinuate that Emily is trying to wear Chester's crown is an insult to both of them. Nobody can wear Chester's crown, because no one can walk in his shoes. Emily deserves her own crown and I'm looking forward to see her don it some day. Don't pit them against each other, they don't deserve that.
I love how you can hear her urgent intake of breath it sort adds to the sense of effort that goes into it. As a contrast I watched a live recording of her take on My December, their great ballad, and she does it so much justice live.
Emily brought it for sure with this, just seeing your smile grow as Emily kept going with her scream was delightful. Thank you for a great breakdown of this.
You said it's almost like you touch the sound, it's so beautiful. I really like the way you describe the music, it's not just technical, its from your heart, love it, thank you so much :)
I love the choice to leave Emily's gasps of air in the recordings, its usually something removed , but it makes the song feel more real.
That's the thing that stood out to me. After The Scream, she has a sharp intake of breath to lead into the next part. Sure it could just be editing, but we've all heard it live as well, so its not far off from reality.
Perfect
In breaking the habit you can hear chester gasping multiple times. Always liked it.
THIS!! Love it!
Watch the live version, 27 of 28 songs in that set list and she absolutely nails it.@@adamross2256

What she said tho was she was glad the song stated with him, it’s not that she was surprised they kept him 😁😅
They call Mike "The Glue" because he's what holds the entire band together.

Don't know if anyone mentioned it but "HEavy is the crown" does fit the situation Emily is in right now.
The title chosen for a reason.
Oh wow, it's almost like they made the song for a reason
Many songs of LP fit Emily's situation. Numb is another example.
Not just Emily, but it also describes the situation of the undisputed GOAT of League of Legends, Faker - he's the player that enters through the door at the end. Not going to explain the entire backstory but it 100% describes them both.

She's BETTER then Chester in some ways :)
@@stealth-x2995 disagree. she totally screams with emotion, even more emotion than Chester, he never screamed with hysterical approach like she
@@ВсадникАпокалипсиса-я9е you're out of your mind.
When Emily does the scream in this song live she holds it 13-14 seconds....... NEAR THE END OF THEIR 2 HOUR SETLIST! So impressive!
And after Given Up and Keys to the Kingdom.
She also turns inhaling into another sung tone.
@@MonkeyJedi99 noticed that too. It subtly builds the anticipation.
Haha so much for " no she's isn't a replacement and this is a new Linkin Park" , only to scream exactly like Chester and songwriting that suits Chester's voice .😂

Like a Fist in all Haters Face
To put a 16 second scream in the 2nd song with Emily is one hell of a statement. Kinda feels like they're saying; ''see, she can handle herself''
@@CHester4138 sure.
@@adambydand1214 comparison is the thief of joy. They're both exceptional vocalists.
Emptiness Machine was Linkin Park saying 'Hi, we're back, this is our new friend Emily', and Heavy is the Crown is Linkin Park saying 'And this is why we chose her to be our new vocalist.'
That shout is a clear tribute to Chester and it is also a shout in the face of the fans, telling them "I can do it too"
Totally agree, even the phrase "this is what you asked for" seems really intentional, love it..!

Right!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

**chef's kiss**
Great reaction as always!
Right!??? 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yeah, there were words before and immediately afterwards, and Emily ploughed through that scream like it was just another Tuesday... wtf?
There'll be another live version in 22 days with whatever magic the Riot event team have cooked up this year on top of LP's performance.
FINALLY someone that also noticed this part!
Oh dear god...
It does not stand up to Hybrid Theory. Hybrid Theory is on a level all of its own. That's not to say it's bad. It's just not up there.
Massive W for Riot to get such a big name again. The Imagine Dragons track was a banger and then they just faffed about for years. They finally got a big name again and the quality returned back to the old levels for a world's track.
@@tyrelsteckler5828 Lets be honest here. There are vanishingly few albums that are up there with Hybrid Theory. No matter the band.

Came here to say this, as well.
Yeah, Emily's debut is pretty much a perfect example. She sang it spot on, despite being her very first time with the band on stage.
WHAT?! I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER ALL THESE GUYS RUNNING AROUND HALF WAY ACROSS THE MAP! (call of duty)

We gonna love chester forever, but we love and are thankful for Emily 👑👑👑👑

Watching you freak out about it being an amazing animation video and a video game collaboration and seeing you explain e-sports etc was a VERY pleasant surprise! Love that you're paying attention to it as a whole, even though your focus is the vocal analysis!
This is what you asked FOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRR!!
16 seconds one second less that Chester's iconic scream. Perfect way to pay respect and show she can hang without trying to one up him.
I could be wrong here, but; I swear I keep on hearing a break/cut in the audio of Emily's scream when I listen to the official audio on my own.
@@CGGS_0 Watch her do it live then. There's a video of that too
but Chester use a lot of techniques in that scream, go high and low in that time, synchronizes with the melody, Emily makes a scream that does not change, it sounds inharmonious and very forced to me and it is not because is in linkin park, i feel the same when i listen in his old band...but well, everyone has their tastes
@@CGGS_0 there isn't. She steadily increases compression during the scream and you can hear it change slightly in timbre and becoming less tonal.
While I'm hesitant to break down vocals as a mere instrumental component, I can't deny Emily Armstrong slots in really well. She's evocative of Chester's delivery and has enough personal flavor to avoid simple replication. Sounds great.
To have a huge long scream on the lyric "this is what you asked for" is just *chef's kiss*
I cannot wait for their tours in other countries in 2025, when they come to Australia!

your excitement about both your profession and games is so cute
I mean in a really heartwarming way.. it's incredibly refreshing to see
I get why some may have suggested this over Emptiness Machine- and that reason is the scream- but EM shows off a better range of vocal ability, that would have been a more ideal place to start with a new vocalist.
Could not wait to see the reaction to the long scream. Still gives me goosebumps. Please react to one of her live performances with LP!!
I’ve been waiting for this video since I first heard it. It’s so hard to wait I just want to get to the part I had to listen to on a loop 😊
Change is the only constant thing in this world. Thanks Emily for carrying the burden instead of being a burden. 🤘❤️🇵🇭
@@ChromodarThat one is clearly a song tailor made for the final of this year's world championship, i have no clue where/how you got the opposite idea
They were LP before Chester joined
I've been wanting for this what feels like 100 years!!
The best part of her scream is that they leave the breath in, that she takes to go into the next verse, almost like they wanted to prove that she actually held that the whole time and it wasn't a post production trick.
This young woman is the Perfect match for Linkin Park. Sorry, there will never be a reunion. Until we've all reunited in the Either. ❤
Emily has quickly become one of my favorite vocalists. No one can replace Chester, but that's not the intention for this new iteration of the band. Her vocals are nuts.
4:40 She uses vocal techniques even when she's just talking. Haha, great yodeling!
Great song and review! Impressed with Emily Armstrong. Love LInkin Park and if this is what they're doing now, will keep loving their evolution.

I absolutely love Sorry for it all, heaven's got a back door and Anybody in particular.
dead sara is a group of scientologist funded by one of the members father who is also a scientologist

No one can replace Chester, but she could live up to his legacy
Also, interestingly, where Chester's screams were filled with pain, Emily's sound like there's some anger behind them. Maybe a good transition into a new era of LP? 👀
Such a cool observation about pain vs anger. I think that’s spot on 👌
I saw it described on another video as Chester was the voice of our childhood/teenage pain, Emily is the voice of our adult anger
I would add Linkin Park has released songs in multiple genres, so numetal doesn't fully encapsulate the band's sound
i love so much that you're doing research on vocal techniques now, you can comment on screams like Emily's with proper knowledge and it's so fascinating
I was waiting for this analysis soooooo much ❤

I hope you've had a chance to go back and watch the performance of this song live in Paris for the championship finals as I know you love analyzing a live performance more so than a studio recording.
P.S. When you think about it, it's really not that different from when AD/DC lost Bon Scott, and they found Brian Johnson instead. And that went pretty okay, don't you think?? 😉
Well said!
With respect. I love how nerdy (passionate) you are. Opera. Singing. Voice. Gaming. Love it ❤
Hehe, the slow smile when you realized she wasn't stopping. Loved it!
I love these new LP songs, Emily is a great addition. ❤
Emily gives me the same emotion Chester did. I miss him, but I love her.
