There are NOT 16 or 20 vowel sounds in American English. There are ONLY 12 vowel sounds in American English.
    purple instead of ɚ ɝ - əɹ
    wooden instead of ʊ - ə
orange instead of or - ō as in rose plus r
auburn instead of ɔ - just use the olive sock sound
    terror /tɛɹəɹ/
    mirror /mɪɹəɹ/
    horror /hɑɹəɹ/

Oh you found the can of worms - the most hideous words of the English language because they expose the folly of using a vowel as if it's a consonant 😆. The letter /r/ is a VOWEL! It is the 'er' sound in American Standard English.
Because we duped ourselves into believing that (r) is a consonant, we use spellings like 'air' & 'aero'. Ah, but with the word 'error', we actually recognize and pronounce the sound of the inititial /e/ (short e) before transitioning into the following 'er' vowel sound represented by the letter (r). We then add a jaw drop and W effect in a desperate bid to express the same 'er' sound as a consonant before returning to the normal (r) vowel 'er' sound. The "o" is typically silent but exists there mainly to dupe you into believing that (r) is a consonant.

If you're an ESL student, I got news for you. The word 'clear' and the word 'English' don't belong anywhere near eachother! 🤣😂🤣
