  • I always heard that the Epiphone Alnico Classic Pro was based on the Gibson '57 Classic pickup.
I decided to upgrade my 2012 (the 2011 had ProBuckers) Epi ES339 to the '57 Classics. I recorded before and after clips and spliced them together. Amps, mics and DAW were left setup while I replaced the pickups, so nothing changed, there. I put new strings on the Epi before I recorded the Alnico Classic Pros and new strings went on during the pickup change. I bought adapters on Reverb that converted the Gibson quick connects to the Epi plugs in my 339. Original pickup heights were measured and matched.
Playing (I'm really a sax player; guitar is a hobby) and Video are amateurish, but I think I pulled off a decent apples to apples comparison.
Spoiler...I think I wasted $250 and a day...they sound the same to me. I never disliked the original pickups, I was just curious and I knew if I didn't record them I would be saying "OMG, these new Gibson pickups sound so much better!!!!"
