Honestly, I don't know if these pickups will get you quite what you're looking for. They have a killer classic rock tone when played through a heavily overdriven tube amp, but I don't know if they've got the output to do hard rock or metal proper justice. Granted, with the right stompboxes I'm sure you can get damn close, but if it were me, I'd try and dig up something with higher output. But yeah, the cleans these bad boys put out are way underrated! Thanks for watching!
Well, Sandy's furthest-west arm just about reached us here in the 'Ville today, no rain but plenty of funky barometric pressure headache-inducing wackiness. And believe it or not we've got locusts too, but those monstrous things only crawl out from under the trees every 17 years. Looking forward to their return in 2021!
Matt your Elixers 11-49 worked. I'll be keeping the stock pickups. Now all I have to do is capture the art of playing like you in the above. Thanks. Joe.
Thanks man! Yeah overall, these pickups aren't nearly as bad as everyone makes them out to be -- just gotta tweak your amp to get the sound you're looking for. Good luck on your build -- you should put up some videos of it!
Using my Epi black beauty 3, I get the same tones show here with the classics alnico (no mods or change outs), whether it be thru the pig nose or crate club vintage. I well admit that the guitar was "set up" before I laid hands on it due to bad experiences in the past. I wasn't charged a lot because like MattStottmann stated, "Raising the pickups" was all it needed. Clean strings help a lot too. I would not change out the pickups unless you are going for a different sound.
Nice tone and playing. These stock p/u's sound fine to my ear. I have a Epiphone 335 Dot, set the alnico humbuckers: open string, neck 3/32" each side from top of pole piece low E and high E; bridge pickup 4/32" each side. Great tone variations, works for me. Work the volume and tone controls.
+Robert Newman I agree, they're excellent stock pickups and definitely don't require any swapping. I personally chose to later replace them with some vintage-wound Alnico 2 PAF clones and I'm happy I did. I feel there's a greater warmth in low-wind, A2 magnet humbuckers which fits jazz styles a little better than these stock pickups do...but as an all-around, versatile pickup, these Epiphone Alnico Classics are great!
I'd suggest maybe raising the pickups up a bit in the pickup rings, if you can without hitting the strings. This may give you an increase in volume and overall punch. Not sure about your particular Les Paul, but many Epiphones come with the same vintage output pickup in the neck AND bridge...which is why the treble position sounds weak compared to the rhythm position. As for a Blackstar HT5 -- I'd strongly recommend picking one up! I have the Blackstar HT20 head, and it's absolutely killer.
Beautiful sounds, Matt. I like that walking up & down the fretboard but, what? no locusts? I wasn't aware Sandy would reach Kentucky ... this is gonna be a monster storm! 2012 has been the year for weather samplers
This is the pups in the Epi LP Studio. Its another key difference to the stand pro witch has the probuckers. PPL keep sayin probuckers are better, but this more mellow tone is def more pleasing. at least to me...
Dude, that tone is just on the spot for Jazz, great playing by the way! :) I'm still debating whether or not to swap the stock pickups from my Epiphone Les Paul, but listening to that demo of yours...I might just keep it stock!
Thanks Luc! I'm totally impressed with Epiphone's stuff these days. I just got a new Epiphone Casino and the stock P90's are glorious! If you're digging the stockers in your Les Paul, leave 'em in...until you just can't resist the upgrade bug anymore!!!
Matt Stottmann Hey! Sheraton is one of my favourite axes! I have to say, i'm impressed with the stock pickups and build quality. It feels much more expensive, and the sound is wonderful woody and clear tone. Epiphone did a great job! Btw great playing!
I like Epi alnico classic stock buckers too. Can I know what are your settings on the tone/vol on your Sheraton? Thanks! I use an Epi LP studio and I'd like to see how your tone settings sound on a solid body. And yes, despite what haters say, stock buckers rock (depending on your genre/tone settings!) Great job on the minor penta. ;)
My Alnico classic pickups has bad bass sound like you hear bogging on the low end . Dirty channel , do you think i need to clean the terminal ? what are the symptoms of bad wiring pickups? thanks
My my my... I can't believe that those are stock Alnico pups? I have recently purchases a 2009 (Indonesia) Epi ES 175, and it plays really, really very well for less than a Grand. However, I can't get THAT tone from her pups, which are also stock Alnico. I'm running (straight) through a Traynor YCV T40, which has twin Celestial 10" speakers, with all dials at 7.5. It sounds ok but NOTHING like what you have; not even close? What's your secret? BTW: Very nice noodles; very nice!
Hi i've got the same stock pickups on my epi les paul custom. They sounded quite "weak" when on the dirty channel on my modelling amp. But again i've never tested it on a better amp. I was planning to get a blackstar ht 5, a tube amp. Would that make any difference?
Hey i used to use your old video's as Agile guitar references! I was looking up these pick ups because someone is selling them(set) for $35 in gold and my son has an SX Les Paul Custom copy that needs an upgrade to the stock pick ups. For $35 would it be worth it, my son plays praise and worship at church and punk rock with me at home
Hey man, thanks! I think I'm probably just mostly using a minor pentatonic scale here, but throwing in some chromatic passing notes and dissonant tones in places to jazz it up a bit!
Do you still have the Epi Pup's ? I'll buy em I just got a LP w/the Same Neck as yours w/the vine on the headstock & it has The Probucker 2 & 3 Alnico's that guitar is unreal every note will sustian for days a touch like a Sustanic or E Bow NEVER head a guitar that sounded as good w/those pickups I believe is part of the secret sauce of the LP 100 Anv. Les would be honored & love that guitar sounds better than any guitar I've played. Now I'll be hunting down these pups I just ordered some GFS Pups Alnico V for a super strat HH & a set of Tele Pickups & their Pots 330K Btw you playing sounded great.
came for the pickups
stayed for the amazing playing
I watch this video every now and then and your playing really inspires me. Hope you continue posting videos.

Beautiful Playing love the Tone these sound perfect to me
That was a terrible hurricane. Your guitar solo is awesome and I like it very much. Thumbs up and all the best! Karlheinz

Beautiful playing and that Sheraton is sweet.
The pickups in this video sound beautiful!
Tone is in the fingers. Excellent playing, dude!
Came here to hear the pickups. Got lost in the playing and forgot why I was here.
Beautiful playing!

I love that sweet tone. And I love that Gadsden flag too
too good

I'm not a jazz guy, but that was so smooth.
It made think of Randy Bachman - Lookin' Out For Number One.
Thanks man!

Grate Sound from these pickups!!! I wouldn't change them!

Sooooo awesomeeeeeee
What type of alnico magnets are in the stock Epiphone?
My my my... I can't believe that those are stock Alnico pups?

Fun fact : Epi semi-hollows and hollows are fucking awesome

+1thess523 Yeah I'd say go for it! That's a fair price for a set of these pickups, and they'll definitely be an upgrade over the stock SX pickups.
hey dude! awesome guitar playing! what scale are you playing? thanks
Hey man, thanks! I think I'm probably just mostly using a minor pentatonic scale here, but throwing in some chromatic passing notes and dissonant tones in places to jazz it up a bit!

You are a good man Matt. Thanks.
I have instaled this Alnico II y two guitars and are amazing humbuckers for the prize *** $41,00***. I recommend this pups
