Smith and Wesson 629 Competitor: Performance Center Craftsmanship

  • For me there aren’t many experiences that beat shooting a top shelf highly tuned revolver. This experience ranks right up there with sporting around town in a 1970 Hemi Powered Cuda and laying a little rubber down on the street. Though it has been many years since I have sat behind the wheel of a vintage hotrod, recently I was afforded the opportunity to review one of Smith and Wesson’s latest hotrods the S&W 629 Competitor. Let me tell you this is no standard 629 it is truly one on steroids. Built on the time tested N Frame this Performance Center revolver has been through an overhaul with new innovation like a weighted barrel and the bead blasted finish making it easy on the eyes.

    I love the way it looks from a little distance, just wish they would mill the barrel to match the shape of the frame where they meet. It could transition out to its current shape. The way it looks right now, it just seems like it was an afterthought. Either that or beef up the frame at the front to match the barrel.

      My choice nothing to do with how they shot honestly but on the warranty. If for whatever reason you find that you need service S&W will send you a prepaid label. Taurus will ask you to ship in your dime. But if you are truly chosing between these exact models I highly doubt you would need warranty they are just that good both of them.

    I'm guessing you've figured this out since posting this video, but N frame grips and X frame grips are not interchangeable. X frame grips are interchangeable with K and L frame grips. That means X frame grips will not fit on the 629.

    • @Dayattherange
      @Dayattherange  4 года назад

      Unfortunately sir you are mistaken as this information came directly form S&W, they confirmed for me their website has been wrong for a while and that they would work on N Frame round butt --- and I have done it www.dayattherange.com/?p=2599

    • @granth3w491
      @granth3w491 4 года назад

      Dayattherange the link you sent says that they fit K and L and N frame grips. That’s interesting because if you look at any grip manufacturer’s website, they differentiate between K/L and N frame grips. So some grips will work between all of them, especially rubber ones. Wood grips is where you would really start running into issues. I’m telling you that X frame grips interchange with K/L and this is widely known online. Some N frame grips also work between K/L/X and N frames, but some will not and is still misinformation at the end of the day. Here’s a forum thread where people discuss it. smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1980-present/207220-about-x-n-frame-grip-interchangeability.html

    • @Dayattherange
      @Dayattherange  4 года назад

      @@granth3w491 I am not talking about wood grips this was about the Hogue Rubber X Frame Grip fitting on an N Frame which it does. In that exact thread a S&W 629 is shown with X Frame hogue grip.

    • @granth3w491
      @granth3w491 4 года назад

      Dayattherange Dayattherange I am aware that some grips interchange. My point is more along your statement in the video that the x frame and n frame “share the exact same profile of grips.” That’s just not true and if someone heard that, they may seek out grips for one or the other that just might not fit. K/L grips 100% interchange with X frame. N frame grips might interchange and they might not. But hey, good vid, I’m sure you know firearms very well, not here to insult or anything.

    • @Dayattherange
      @Dayattherange  4 года назад

      @@granth3w491 No argument or insult taken. When we stop learning from one another we stop growing as a species. I was very well aware of all the controversy in this topic but I decided to take a stance "because" in mic'ing the grip form factor for some reason the N Frame rear strap seems to be about .9thou thicker than the X frame at least in my 2 revolvers in which I performed the testing. With this difference wood grips would have a little ledge. I have never jumped into those conversation because like most anything the manufacturer of the grip could be different in the specs they used.
