When I first heard Floor Jansen, all the millions of singers from different genres from different times that I have ever listened to in my life faded, found themselves in the shadow of Floor. Floor Jansen for me is the best singer on the planet, she is beyond the reach of others.

I would never dare to say she's the best female singer on the planet, because maybe someone better's out there, but I've gotta say I haven't heard anyone that tops her so far.
This reaction happened to me late at night, when I should have been asleep already. I listened with headphones so as not to wake the neighbors. I was preparing to write the usual greeting, but I realized it would be a mistake. You know very well the context, the song, the capabilities of the band, the vocal qualities of Floor and Tarja. As I will subscribe.
I find it fascinating that in the case of Nightwish, we can see and compare 2-3 versions of the same songs. It's as if we see several interpretations of a famous opera area ...

Thank you very much! I'm really happy you liked the video! Nightwish is amazing band and as you said these different lead singers even create a bigger variety to their music. I really like the comparison to different renditions of opera arias. I have never thought about it that way before...
@@andreasgrussl There is a rather large intersection between Metal and Classical Music, not just in Symphonic Metal. That is also true for Metal fans, most of us can name a few classical pieces and composers we really like. (Beethoven and Vivaldi for me)
My favourite example by Nightwish of how much of a difference a singer can make is "10th Man Down". Tarya sounds emotionally detached from the story, her vocals floating above the heavy music, giving it a hymnic feel, a certain lightness. Floor's version on the other hand drips of emotion, her voice is in the thick of it and pulls you into the story, making you part of it. Both interpretations are brilliant but so different, they feel like different songs.
@@caligo7918 I hope it didn't come across like I was saying that metal fans wouldn't know classical pieces. In fact, in most cases - as you said - there seems to be a love for both Rock/Metal and Classical music in many people. Personally vocally I have always been jumping in between those two genres vocally with adding in a bit of swing sometimes. I'll take a look at "10th Man Down" by Tarja and Floor.
Very good analysis of Floor's performance in this song. Most people only think about comparing Floor and Tarja's versions of this song in terms of which voice they like better, but I think it's more interesting to compare the two approaches philosophically. The way the vocal arrangement was originally written for Tarja, she contrasts the ups and downs of the musical composition with her consistent vocal approach. Floor's approach to this song is totally different, instead completely reworking the vocal arrangement to follow all the same ups and downs the composition does, and adding an additional 20 seconds of vocals at the end so that the vocal arrangement crescendos at the same moment the musical composition does. Neither approach is necessarily right or wrong, they're just two completely different artistic visions of how vocals should fit together with music.
Great way to explain it. Thank you. But if you _do_ ask the question which one I like better, I must say I prefer Floors' version because it uses so many more colors. Tarja was a fantastic front woman for Nightwish, but she basically used only one vocal style: operatic. The different styles Floor uses add a lot of depth to the performance for me.

Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6)
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.

Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist and songwriter of Nightwish) is the main composer for Nightwish.
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.

i love Floors version soo much more because she ports so much more feeling and energy then Tarja ever has. Floor got such a gift in her voice and she invested so much time and energy to bring her gift to maximum. She is a real goddess of metal
Servus Andreas. So happy to watch your review of this epic song and band. I remember asking you for this months and months ago. It was absolutely worth the wait! Loved your insights and comparitive links to other songs/bands. I have a personal preference for Floor's vocals, because of her versatility and overall sound, but I don't want to take away anything from the vocal abilities of Tarja (and Anette). It's just a matter of personal taste. I hope you'll be doing some kind of review of Nightwish again in the future. I'd love to watch it. Take care and greetings from the Netherlands.

Fantastic reaction and analysis. Love the insights you brought to her technique. For me the changes Floor made, especially the ending make this version of the song much better then Tarja's.
@@Kelly-pp1et Have to agree to disagree. Floor's voice throughout this song just sounds better to me. There are songs where I prefer Tarja's voice but this isn' t one of them.
To me, Floor's changes to the vocals in this song intensified its emotional impact. But then, she seems to bring that uncanny intensification to every song that she covers.

Great breakdown. You must spend tons of time editing! Agreed. Both Tarja & Floor have great versions of this song but the interpretation, coloring & different styles Floor uses makes this version more interesting for me. Floor is amazingly diverse.

Floor really upgrated this song and since this version came out, it has become kind of anthem of Nightwish. Every Nightwish fan knows this version and Nightwish has got many new fans right after hearing GLS at Wacken. This song and this particular version really has something special!
One of the best reviews I've watched, thank you! Please go down the Nightwish/Floor rabbit hole and do many more. Floor alone has a ton of solo work and covers to review. Your analysis is spot on in every way. This may be one of the best bands ever, and Floor is simply devastating in every way. Tarja is a class act but Floor just has so many tools in her vocal arsenal, pop, rock, folk, opera, metal, theater, etc. Not to mention her stage presence is UN-matched!

Since you mentioned Heart, you should try checking out Floor covering Alone.
Ignoring vocal tone for a minute, the reason I prefer Floors version is that it has so much more energy. Ive seen a few people argue that Floors versions miss the original point of the songs, but I dont agree. You can change the energy without changing the meaning. I guess it depends on your personality, Tarjas approach may appeal more to a sullen teenager, Floors approach may appeal more to a more confident adult.
Another thing is that Floors timing is much much better. Tarja often sounded like she was lagging behind the music, for me it just made the songs feel really flat. Its like Tarja was pulling us away from the music and trying to make us focus on the voice, whereas Floors timing compliments the music. I find Tarjas approach quite jarring. Its ironic really that its Floors version that gets all the vocal reactions, given that the voice part is more complimentary to the music and less dominant.

Abot Tarja vs Floor: as you said, it's mostly about the personal taste. Tarja was much more operatic while Floor is so versatile and by that brings way more into the songs.
One thing that always strikes me, when I hear live versions with Tarja (any NW song) is that she sings quite often on an offset timing (to drum rythm). It's probably something that comes from her strict operatic style and (musical) background. But metal, even symphonic metal, is so driven by riffs and rythm that this offset timing simply appears as not fitting and "wrong" (in a way).
No comparison between the 2 singers. Floor is 100 per cent better.
Something has always bothered me when Tarja is singing. You said it: timing.
But I do like Tarja and appreciate her very much.
Floor is by far a more entertaining singer. Her opera, stage/show, rock and folk styles are without match. Dropping from head voice to chest voice within 1 lyric is unbelievable. The Ghost Love Score went from pretty good to Epic with Floor. Thank you for your analysis. Well done!

Tarja and Floor are top singers, but with Tarja I'm still hungry, even a bit boring. At Floor it is the opposite, you are always faced with surprises, her technique and color palette are much larger and also more pleasant to listen to. Floor also constantly examines the content of the text and feels it well. Top Artist🤟🏻🤟🏻🎶🎶

While at shool we were taught to really listen to music and Nightwish made me realise that modern music is worth really listening to and Floor to me is just the best, pity she never got to sing with Freddy Mercury, what a performane that would of been.
Probably the greatest live song performance in musical history, and personally, my alltime favourite performance. There is no stopping Nightwish... Tuomas (keyboards), is the driving force behind the band's compositions, and he just shines on stage as well. Floor brought a passion and an understanding of the English language to make it leaps ahead of Tarja'a (NOT TANJA) version.

Thank you for that reaction and brilliant analysis ! and Welcome to the best band and female vocalist of our time, I know bold statement but if you take the journey you will understand ,the YT fan base is massive,passionate & very active, 80% of which is for the Floor era,she stepped in Oct 2012 ,and has been their 3rd,current & "Final" vocalist ,GLS is the epitome of Symphonic Metal with more of a classical influence as is many of their compositions but many from this concert are much heavier ,also GLS is the most reacted to song on YT ever with several vocal coaches having over 2.5 Million views .But this was but a very small taste of what Floor & NW has in store for you.

Floor opened the show with the 1st song below and just blew everyone's mind,only two of the other singers knew who Floor was but none of them had heard her sing with such versatility,after the 8 day run of the show Floor's & NW's popularity soared,stadiums filled up and ticket sales shot up.btw since Floor joined NW & after this show NW's fan base has tripled . on Mama by Samantha S.Floor completely changes the tempo and song structure ,the song is about Samantha wanting to be more like her Mom, Que Se Siente by Rolf is originally a merenge ,mambo type song so of course Floor does it her way,Winner by Tim A. he wrote for his brother who has Spina Bifida,

One of the (imho) best reactions to Floor's GLS from Wacken I've watched so far... And I've seen hundreds of 'em.
Truth is, I've re-discovered Nightwish (with Floor) through all the reactions. Was a fan in the very early days and have seen them live with Tarja back in 1999, 2000 and 2003. As Anette took over, I completely lost track of them. I haven't even realized that Floor took over even though she was the lead singer of one of my favourite bands, After Forever... Sad example of missing the relevant information ;-)
I really liked your objective comparison with Tarja. That's exactly how these things should be handled. The ever smoldering argument between "Floor is best" and "Nah, Tarja is the true and best Nightwish singer" just bores me. This is and should be up to everybody's personal and therefore subjective tastes.
Nightwish with Tarja will always have a place in my heart, simply because heavy metal with operatic vocals was just groundbreaking in the late '90s. But today I do prefer Floor because of her incomprehensible versatility. I think musically Tuomas is able to go further just because of her versatility and can write songs that weren't possible with Tarja's limitations in the more contemporary vocal styles.
Keep up the great work and I will subscribe to your channel if you continue to explore the more darker and metallic realms of contemporary music.

I think you would love hearing the incomparable voice of Marcela Bovio, a classically trained singer originally from Mexico but now living in the Netherlands. Like Floor she has spent the last couple decades in the world of metal music. She has a gorgeous voice which can be heard in "Ayreon (Stream of Passion) Out in the Real World Live in Tilburg 2019" as well as a video on her RUclips Channel, "Marcela Bovio - Stream of Passion's "Monster" one take live performance"

I listen for the first time this song in Tarja's voice and was amazing. But when I get to hear Floor's 'version' it smashed my brain. Not Only for those magical ending notes that get me goosebumps everytime I hear but for the versatililty of Floor's voice, that makes you feel different sensations in every part of the song depending on her voice alone, something I believe that Tarja didn't do at this level.
Out of many, many GLS reaction videos, this one for me easily ranks among the very best. Thank you for this masterclass Andreas! As to your question, Floor's version reigns supreme for me. Not only because she really perfected an already great song and gave it the finale it so badly needed & deserved, but also because of the dynamics & colouring. That's simply not possible when you overdo the classical style. Floor could easily do that, but fortunately chose (and still chooses) to dose it sensibly. She wants to tell the story, and that needs vocal versatility, dynamic flow, changes between styles and layering.
There's also a minor issue imo with Tarja's pronunciation of some English words ("keel me" instead of "kill me" etc.), which can be a little distracting at times. Bigger issue for me personally is that I simply can't stomach the classical singing style for too long. It comes across as too much of an act (which is its purpose of course). Many ppl love it, but for me the act gets in the way of emotion, which Floor is able to bring in spades for the reasons I indicated. Cheers from Amsterdam!
