She’s there twice a year when it reopens in March and again during Oktoberfest and then she might come back for Christmas, her hometown is about 25 minutes away and she owns a house in pigeon Forge

Dolly Padton did open a theme park, she hired family and friends who where out of work and below the poverty line. She basically changed the economy there all by opening Dollywood..its a really fun theme park too! Leavenworth at Christmas is AMAZING!
The Salem Witch Trials is now believed to be due to an ergot outbreak in the area. Ergot is a fungus that grows on wheat, and is where LSD comes from. So people were tripping balls, getting paranoid, and freaking out.
It might have started as that, but it was mostly bratty girls accusing others of being witches because of petty jealousies, and others maybe thinking, hey that house will be available if it no longer has an owner.
That's been disproven numerous times. If it truly was so widespread, a lot of small children and old people would have eventually died. No one did (other than by execution). They also weren't growing the kind of rye ergot likes to colonize.
Actually hoof and mouth disease in animals was the true cause along with some contaminant in the water or food. Scientists have tested Salem and yeah it was something.

I highly recommend giving Pigeon Forge a visit sometime. It is quite a unique tourist location with tons to do. Dollywood is really fun if you like rollercoasters and bluegrass/country music. Pigeon Forge is also located right next to Gatlinburg which is also worth checking out especially if you like nature, mountains, and beautiful scenery.

Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg are extremely touristy. The cities are like county fairs, over the top. If you just want that, then yeah there's a lot going on. But most tourists go to the area for the Smokies & nature, & those cities are like the exact opposite. Dollywood is nice as a theme park, but the rest of it is like they just threw anything at the wall to see what would stick. It's so overtly touristy, it's a joke.
We used to go to Gatlinburg and Pidgeon Forge when I was in college. Unfortunately the houses we rented have burned down lol so I’m not sure what it’s like these days
I lived in Salem, Ma for 22 years. I have lived in several historic homes; one has an entrance to the catacombs in the wharf, another was on Howard St. Right across from the cemetery. Somewhere on the property that the cemetery sits on is the location where Giles Corey was pressed to death. The last address I called home is a beautiful BNB called The Henry Derby House. BTW that black house in the picture on your video is called The Witch House, but it was built in the 1630s by my 12 great grandfather who was a minister in the first church of Salem before he was run out of town for his religious beliefs not alighting with the Puritans. He went on to found Providence Plantations and the state of Rhode Island.
@bliebird2381 yes the man pressed to death was Giles Corey. His story is a very interesting one. He was not tried, so wasn’t executed. He died as a result of the sheriff trying to “press a confession “. The pressing lasted three days before he succumbed to the weight. I was fortunate enough to work for the first walking tour company in Salem, Ma. 😊

@bluebird3281 Yes. You have the right Giles Corey. However, we have no evidence that he actually said “more weight “, especially toward the end of his pressing. Towards the end it would have been impossible for him to get enough air into his lungs to speak. There was an account that may or may not be truth that Sheriff Corwin asked Giles Corey again “How do you plea on the charge of witchcraft?!” Giles tongue was hanging from his mouth and he was gasping for air; The sheriff used his walking stick to stuff Giles’ tongue back into his mouth and repeated the question. Giles Corey may very well have said those famous words in the beginning of his pressing, but it is highly doubtful that he was able to speak toward the end. Fun fact; the original court documents from the witch trials are not housed in Salem, but in Boston.💗😊
Being from the Pacific Northwest, I've been to Leavenworth a few times, once at Christmas, which is really pretty spectacular with the snow, the town lights, etc. and of course there's skiing not far away as well. It's on one of the most scenic highways in the West, US Highway 2 through the North Cascade Mountains. It's located in a valley that extends southeast to the city of Wenatchee. The area is known for its fruit, especially apples and cherries, as well as vineyards (really good wine produced in the area all the way to Chelan) and some really good breweries as well. I like going in the fall for the fall colors and the great wine and beer tasting. I've never been there for Oktoberfest, but it's supposed to be a good time.
My daughter-in-law’s mom and step dad lived just outside Leavenworth but ended up moving down to Wenatchee where my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter live because during the winter it could be a real challenge to get into town for grocery shopping, etc. It is beautiful at Christmas, and Oktoberfest is a lot of fun!
I lived about 3 hrs away from Pigeon Forge... it was the perfect spot for a weekend getaway. So fun & so much to do! And very close to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Should be on your list of places to visit someday!
Salem is really fun. You can go the spooky paranormal places, or the more historical places (or tours). I do NOT recommend going anywhere near Halloween. Goes from quaint, old town, to witch-ghost-demon explosion - people dress up in costume. I mean, it can be an experience if you like a lot of people around you. I've done it. And I love Halloween. But that was too much, even for me.
We have been flooded with snowbird retirees moving in to our town. Greenville, SC. It’s truly beautiful and a foodie town with great food and beer breweries. Downtown used to be where our artists lived. Now it’s full of $ million dollar condominiums. Sigh. We vacationed in Pigeon Forge/ Gatlinburg Tennessee this year. There were bears in our backyard of our air b&b. It was wonderful!
Never been to ANY of these places, but I HIGHLY request you check out Eureka Springs, Arkansas! Think of Jerome, Arizona… but MORE hilly, businesses built ONTOP of businesses, houses and businesses built INSIDE the rocks and hills, stairs to get up and down places, winding spaghetti roads, LOADS of history, haunted places (including the famous Crescent Hotel), and LOADS of Victorian-era buildings (both of the time, and newly-constructed). - It’s kind of a tourist trap (any popular destination is one obv), but the food there is DELICIOUS! - Another place (from my friends from Michigan) is Mackinaw Island! There’s (mostly) no automobiles there (banned vehicles), and all horse drawn carriages!
I go through leavenworth now and then. Its about 2 hours from me. Its pretty spectacular at christmas. It is no place to drive, cuz it gets frozen solid, but to get a hotel and go bar hopping, on foot, it aint bad Warm clothes, snow boots, sled dogs..
Another town along the lines of Jerome is Galena IL. It has stairs that lead throughout the town, awesome restaurants and a trolley tour. And about 4 hrs north is Wisconsin Dells, WI, which is a town built around water parks and other amusements. At the end of September, north of the Dells in Warrens is an absolutely huge Cranberry Festival. But my advice would just wander around maps and look at street views and pictures.
Whittier, Alaska is a seaport that serves the Alaska Railroad's connection to the interior through a tunnel under the mountains. It's also a port for cruise ships that visit the glaciers in Prince William Bay. Cruise ships drop off passengers to ride the Glacier Train to visit scenic glaciers. What you see in the pictures is the entire town.
I lived in Prescott AZ (45 minutes from Jerome) and drove HWY 89 to Jerome to get to Sedona all the time and the road is awesome! Jerome itself is a tourist trap. Haunted hamburger is easily the most expensive burgers in the area.
Gibsonton Florida was a small town mainly consisting of Ringingly Brothers and various carnival employees. But they pretty much have either died or moved elsewhere. The few that remain are most likely retired. The area is being rejuvenated with new homes and businesses. I lived in the next town over for 20 years. I moved away 6 years ago and miss it every day.
@mrright1068 True. However, close to everything. 13 miles to downtown , 15 to MacDill, hour to Orlando, or the beach, even less to Sarasota. It's really central to everything. When I first moved there, it was considered the boondocks. Now it is so built up that it is unrecognizable. Restaurants, shops, gas stations, schools, movie theaters, hospitals, new homes, of course, new roads, new marina, and so on. The 3 bedroom, 2 bath home I paid 100k for is now selling for over 400k. The cost of homes has become outrageous. Shoebox homes with a door that are roughly 1200 sqft are listed at 350k, and those are townhouses. It's just ridiculous. The insurge of people coming from California and New York are making it impossible to afford to live in Florida anymore. Home and car insurance has doubled if not tripled for some. The economy is out of control, and we are all, literally, paying the cost.
in the 90s, the largest residential community of side show performers in the u.s. was in Texas, an unincorporated county that has since been absorbed by other counties. it was most famed for having four prominent members of the Jim Rose Circus in that period but having as many as 50 active performers and several retirees. But like most specialized communities, drama ensues, tourists come to gawk and people move on. Besides by the 2k, who wasn't a freak?
Flying to Belfast this weekend to visit and attend the GA Tech/FSU Season opener in Dublin. If you can get tickets, come watch a USA College game! Should be good, lots of people are flying over for the game. On another note, I live near Seaside FL, and go through every so often. It's basically a place for super rich to have a 5+ million dollar beach house that they use 1 or 2 times a year.
The Mothman Prophecies is the movie with Richard Greer. Great movie! I’ve been to Dollywood too many times to count. Lived an hour away and was a perennial season pass holder. Great park to visit! Check the show schedule and if the weather is good, you might run into Dolly herself! I did, a couple times. She’s is ridiculously sweet!
In the mid 2000s my dad built homes in Seaside Beach, Rosemary Beach and several other small towns there. It's an incredible area, definitely my favorite part of Florida.
Levenworth is a pretty cool town, I like to go in the summer because you can float the river around the town and they have an awesome 4th of July festival with hours of fireworks it’s pretty fun.
you need to visit Jupiter, Sebastian, and Vero beach Florida: these are east coast towns, no where near as humid as Orlando and similar regions. you have to go visit Maine, cedar point park in Ohio, kings island park in Kentucky, Tuscan Arizona can be fun, just not in summer, and California sucks to live, but visiting Santa Monica can be fun. Carson city Nevada, Reno Nevada is quite beautiful, just dont go in the middle of summer.
i’ve been to a few of these actually, but the most notable for me is tangier island! there’s actually an even smaller island called smith island nearby. when i visited, only around 100 people lived there! they don’t have a grocery store and had to order food to arrive via boat which someone would get every sunday.

The only towns I’ve been to from this video are Leavenworth, Washington and Salem, Massachusetts. One of my ancestors was involved in the witch trials (and not in a good way) as he was one of the accusers that lead to a hanging. Thomas Chandler was his name.

I live close to Pigeon Forge, there's also a Christmas shop that's open all year, helicopter tours, skydiving simulators, dinner theaters, water slides and more, great place to go!
Jerome is a great place to wander around in. It is full of switchbacks so, yes they have stairs to cut up or down to the road for those on foot. It was pretty much a ghost town for a while and is full of mining history. When I moved to the area in the early 80's most of the residents were older hippies that made pots or jewelry, tie-dyed shirts, etc. It was like, "Come shop and buy my things and then get out of town!" (Or at least that is how I felt.) It is quite different now with lots of cute shops and good restaurants and even places to stay overnight. The drives to get in and out of town over Mingus Mountain are beautiful winding roads, tall pines, and places to glimpse the beautiful red rocks of Sedona across the valley. Loved going over the through Jerome, and down into Cottonwood by the Verde River. One of my favorite day trips.
Jerome, AZ is very cool and retains many old buildings from the 1890’s. It became a ghost town until the 60’s when hippies came to Jerome. It continues to be very quirky. The old hospital, is now a hotel and is very haunted. They do ghost tours there and at many Jerome sites.
I've been to Pigeon Forge been over 30 years ago,, it's pretty cool. Never been to Leavenworth, but I've been to "German Village" In Columbus, OH even lived in German Village for about a year. ;)
John Ringling (of the Ringling Brother's circus) called Sarasota FL. home. In fact, Sarasota was home to the Circus Hall of Fame on US 41 across from the airport. The circus folks would spend the winter in Venice, Florida, just south or in Sarasota. Carl Wallenda, the famous hire wire artist had a home behind my aunt's house. Sarasota HIgh school had a program called the Sailor Circus, where the circus folks would teach various acts, like trapeze and high wire, because it meant work during the winter. The circus decided to move to Orlando in the late 1980s to create Circus World. Just a little history lesson from my old home town.
That was their winter home. Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus also had a home in Baraboo, Wisconsin. It is home to the Circus World Museum, which features a whole lot of their wagons and other artifacts and has circus performances under the big top during tourist season.
I live in Beaufort, NC and it's an awesome quaint town with much history and alot of ship wreck diving. Also many festivals, great fishing, wild horses and other things to see and do.
Orlando? Maybe you will get to see a hurricane up close! And I know how much you love tornadoes, did you know hurricanes spawn tornadoes? Have a nice trip! ❤
I think you should check out Dollywood sometime. It's a little different type of fun, than Orlando. But, it's a great amusement park. Dolly Parton actually owns it, and lives close by.
I live near Dollywood. Pigeon Forge. It takes us about an hour to get there. The whole town is a party. You can do anything from moonshine tasting, which I highly recommend to splash country, which is a Water theme park there are Ripley’s believe it or not museums there haunted houses just about anything you could imagine doing on vacation, you can do in pigeon Forge. They have Ripley’s aquarium of the Smokies and it’s an amazing place, if you’re ever in this area, I highly recommend Forge for at least three days
Pigeon Forge is a ton of fun. It’s about 4 hours away from where I grew up, and was a great weekend getaway. Plus the next town over is Gatlinburg, which is a beautiful German town nestled in the mountains with all kinds of cool shops and restaurants and ski lifts that take you up the mountain for gorgeous views. It’s also very touristy like Pigeon Forge, so you want to go in the off season.

Damn, dude - you need to head over and drive around, exploring America! The country is so big that there are different cultures, (and foods!), all over - not just state-to-state, but within states. I live only a few minutes from Salem Massachusetts! They have some really cool stuff around there, it's a huge tourist spot and gets very busy around Halloween especially, due to its history. There's historical places of interest and tours, horror museums, and lots of other cool things worth seeing. It's common to just see people walking the streets of Salem wearing witch hats, no matter the time of year.
Jerome Arizona is awesome. They have some cool museums ranging from motorcycles to mining. There’s a bunch of wine tasting bars and there’s 2-3 actual bars. Plus the haunted hotel. Great day trip.
I've been to Jerome a lot. If you're going from Phoenix to Sedona, take a few hour detour and check it out. When all the copper and silver was mined out, the town was about 5000 people. Then it nearly became a ghost town. In the 70s bohemiam types moved in and made an artsy haven. Then it became touristy. There's hiking up on Mingus Mountain, and through the twisting Mingus Pass you are on to Prescott. Parking is a son of a bitch on weekends. The town is basically a narrow switchback up the side of the mountain with several dead-end spurs, and stairs connecting them.
We went to Gatlinburg, which is right next to Pigeon Forge for an anniversary. Found a cute b&b in the woods, but got to do all the fun stuff "in town." Quite lovely!
I live in Oregon, but I have been to Leavenworth Washington the town that looks like a German village and it is very beautiful. I would love to go in the winter and take a horse drawn sleigh, growing up friends of the family had an antique sleigh And we would hitch the horses up and go for rides was a blast. I was very young though great memories.
Ok so I lived in Apollo Beach Florida which is 6 miles from Gibsonton. Drove thru it everyday to work in Tampa...1990 -2014. Yes there the lobster boy family lived...check that out it's a story on its own and yes no there is nothing there lol.
OMG.. I'm just sitting here watching you react to weird American towns, not thinking for one moment that Whittier, Alaska would make the list. You wanted to know if anyone watching has been or lived in any of these.. I grew up on and off during my childhood in Whittier, AK. Haven't been back to Whittier since about 1986. I moved from there to Anchorage so I could go to a real High School. (* shoutout to Robert Service High School, class of 1989!!) Living in Whittier in the 70s/80's was like living on Mars. No computers/internet/cable TV/ or TV in general. Too many memories to mention on how weird it was to live there. Yes, we walked the tunnel to school. Yes, we would 'play' inside the Buckner Building, this was before it was all locked up like it seems to be now. At one time you could walk the tunnel from the Buckner to the old power building, and that was knocked down years ago.
I used to live a few minutes from Pigeon Forge, in a little town called Kodak, Tennessee. Dolly Parton grew up in that area. Now I live near the "other" Beaufort, in SOUTH Carolina. We pronounce it , "Buford". It's also a cool little town, with a historic district dating from before the Civil War, and was the home of Robert Smalls, a slave sea captain who stole his master's ship and sailed it to the Union territory. He was able to give them loads of defense info, and taught them how to sail in the treacherous waters of the Southern seacoast. Beaufort became a Union port after that.
Jerome and Sedona are probably my 2 most favorite places on earth. My art has been picked by a gallery in each which to me is the highest achievement. More so than any gallery in New York or L.A.
15:30 it's cheap because it's in West Virginia. the economy there is incredibly weak. if you can work remotely and manage to get decent internet service, one could go far.
I haven’t been to any of these towns but I do have a friend the lives in Washington and she told me if I ever come out to visit again that she would take me to visit Leavenworth. Also, Michigan has a town similar to Leavenworth. The name of the town is called Frankenmuth and I have visited that town a few times. It has a Christmas store called Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland and is opened 361 days a year.
I'd recommend Seaside Heights, along the shore of New Jersey (south of New York City). There's good boardwalk amusements right along the beach. But only in the summer!
Leavenworth is beautiful. Was there last October and was mezmorized by the pinkish iridescence looking leaves on the trees outside our motel. Winter time is beautiful with Christmas lights. On one anniversary trip in January, we saw fireworks at night against the snow covered mountains. Beautiful! Town Square is cool with horse draw carriages and pretty a park. Yes, it's just like what you said with the shops and people watching. There is also a reindeer farm close by.
Jerome, AZ is kinda fun but only cool for the afternoon. It’s a good place to get BBQ for lunch. A good full day trip is to drive from Sedona (you have to see videos of that town) to Jerome for lunch and end up in Prescott for a night of saloons and an incredible meadery.
If I ever go to Tennessee, I'm DEFINITELY hitting Pigeon Forge. Only gotten to ride go karts once, and it was on the smallest crappiest track ever, and it was STILL super fun. Those tracks look great, and I love wooden roller coasters, so it looks like they have some of those to check out, too.
I think I live in the most average State and city. Des Moines Iowa excels at only 2 things, ribs and sweet corn, but any vegetable will grow here in the black dirt.
im with ya about Whittier Alaska, it would drive me bonkers to live in a little box within a big box with the rest of the town ! now a cool place to visit in alaska is juneau, and barrow alaska, those are some beautiful places. oh and a weird place he left out is a little island called Yamacraw Island (Daufuskie Island) off the coast of South Carolina that is a strange little place.

You might find the Gullah (or Gullah Geechee) people who live in the Lowcountry and islands off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia interesting. The Gullah-Geechee culture is influenced by the Caribbean, as many enslaved Africans spent time on Caribbean islands before arriving in America. The Gullah people were isolated for a long time and have developed a distinctive culture and traditions that have been passed down through language, agriculture, and spirituality. I'd never heard of them before 2005 when I read an article about the Bible being published in Gullah. There are a few short videos on YT about them.

The first town, Seaside Florida, is next to Rosemary Beach Florida where we often go on vacation, renting a beach house for a week with friends. It is really like this in person too, it's so clean and laid out perfectly with walking paths that are cement along the nicely landscaped roadway, the main one being 30A that everybody down that way is familiar with.
I live the next town over from Salem, Massachusetts and literally could walk over to where you see the images in this video. One of the largest Halloween celebrations in the country is held in Salem each year. Several hundred thousand people flock to the city from all over the world during the month of October. On Halloween, you’ll have massive crowds coming in by train from Boston and surrounding communities plus all the tourists who join in the festivities including a costume ball, parade, etc. People wear the most amazing costumes and spend the day and night having a great time. Everything is family oriented and shenanigans are not tolerated. They bring in police from surrounding communities and Boston to make sure everybody has a safe and fun experience. They even bring in mounted police to see over the crowds. It’s crazy. As a local, you avoid going to or through Salem during this month because it is wild with people. You would love it! To see what it’s like around that time, watch either Hubie Halloween with Adam Sandler or Hocus Pocus with Bette Midler as they were filmed in Salem around the Halloween festival. Either will give you a visual of Salem during Halloween.
I would say $144, 000.00 home is more of a normal price for a home. You get into tourist trap towns, big cities, and states that have high cost of living drive the prices way up.
That depends what part of the country you're in AND what type of home. That figure is way below the national average. I'm in a very rural area in TN & that's a low figure even for a mobile.
@@Lynn705HalYou are exactly right. Where I am from, actually , in Oklahoma and Kansas, $150, 000.00 would get you a decent home, and probably less than 10 yrs ago, a very nice home. That being said, demand and population growth play a role. I do believe we are going to have another housing market bust at some point soon.
Here in Wisconsin you are looking at about $250,000 for a starter home. You can find cheaper ones in some small towns away from the bigger cities, however prices here jumped quickly. If you want a house up north you better be a millionaire. Hence why so many people from Chicago and Illinois have bought so much of the property for summer homes!
Many of the strange behaviors and occurrences in towns like Salem, Massachusetts , turned out to be the result of tainted food or moldy bread causing hallucinations. Some researchers believed physical and mental disorders were the reasons people were executed by burning or hanging. I can tell you from experience because I have been to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee not once but twice. You literally could not look in any direction without seeing a go-kart track somewhere. I remember one in particular was nascar themed, with not only numbers but also sponsor type stickers on all of them but they were scrambled randomly. The last time I was there (April 2012) there was one where it was basically a giant loop, you go up like I think 3 or 4 times before there's just a giant downward slope before starting over again. Honestly it was fun as hell & I actually want to go there again to be honest
I lived in Beaufort NC for about 10 years and it's a nice little town. It's right on Bogue Sound and Bogue Inlet is a short boat ride to access the Atlantic Ocean. There are hundreds of shipwrecks off the coast of the Outer Banks here in NC which is why they call the area the Graveyard of the Atlantic. It also has some great fishing, both in the Sound and in the Atlantic and one of the biggest fishing tournaments in the U.S. is held there every year, The Big Rock Marlin Tournament. The winner this year caught a 516 lb. (234 kilos) blue marlin and won $1,816,375.
I live in north Georgia and I have been to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg Tennessee many times. I love going and there are so many things to do. You have nature trails and numerous scenic views. In town you have dinner theaters and restaurants. There are also numerous wine,moonshine and hard Cider tasting rooms. Really there is something for everyone. Another place to ho is Helen, Georgia it is another town that is done in the Bavarian style and it has it's own octoberfest every year.
It was a very interesting movie. I don't like to hype a movie too much. It's never as good/bad/cool to everyone. So I'll just say. Even if you hate it. You want to see what is happening next.
I lived in Knoxville, TN for almost 20 years and I took my sons to Pigeon Forge all the time. We had season passes to Dollywood every year. If you prefer a more peaceful side to it go to Cades Cove. Pigeon Forge can get very overwhelming after a while.
Pigeon forge is my favorite vacation spot. We’ve had season tickets for Dollywood for years. Met Dolly a couple times there over the years. It’s a great place to visit ANY time of the year.

Adam, if you are going to Orlando, come cruise through Mt. Dora, FL, only 45 minutes north of Orlando. I think you will love this little quaint town I live in. I am originally from Miami and fell in love with this little town.
I lived in Sarasota Florida for a time. Home of the Barnum and Bailey Circus and the circus folk. Use to watch our neighbor practice the highwire in the off season. Little kids, like 5 yrs old were up there too.
Jerome is cool. A similar town in AZ, which I personally prefer, is Bisbee. It's down near the border, but also an old copper mining town built on a mountainside. They have a annual race there called the Bisbee 1000 because you'll climb that many steps as you traverse the course. It's right next to Douglas, which also has a lot of history, and not far from Tombstone, which most people know at least by name.
Jerome, AZ is also home to Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer for Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. It's also the location of his winery Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards.
We live not too far from Seaside in Florida. We’ve been there several times and it’s pretty nice. Lots of small artistic shops and interesting places to shop. The entire Florida panhandle along the Gulf Coast is beautiful.
I can’t say enough about Pigeon Forge. It is a great place to visit and lots to do for the kids. I love the Smoky Mountains. Especially in the fall with the beautiful fall colors. My son and I are actually wanting to purchase a home around there and turn it into an Airbnb. And yes the go carts are fabulous. A few are different levels. So fun. I highly recommend this place plus Gatlinburg down the road.
It might not have been weird enough to make the list (others would differ) but Key West is a very unique spot in the US. Well first of it not in the US ...they call it the Conch Republic. My friend is a maintenance manager for one of the few big hotels on the island. His daily transportation on the island is a solar powered mini truck that he designed and built. He is one the less weird people you will meet there. Yes it is very touristy but I think it would match your vibe well. If you weren't already committed to your plans in Orlando I would have recommended you to go there. Perhaps someday.
I used to live near Point Pleasant, WV. The county it's in is mostly a farming area. It was the most peaceful place I have ever lived. Most of the housing prices are cheaper in WV because the cost of living is cheaper.
So the bar in Gibsonton, FL was the one I went to on my 21st birthday. I lived in that town for about 3 years. I loved it. It is just about as rural as you can get on the outskirts of Tampa. The people were mostly nice. And it was beautiful with a rich esoteric history.

Adam, I grew up in Johnson City Tennessee, which isn’t too far from pigeon Forge Tennessee. Dolly Parton owns Dollywood. He used to go there as a kid. It’s pretty cool. She’s there twice a year when it reopens in March and again during Oktoberfest and then she might come back for Christmas, her hometown is about 25 minutes away and she owns a house in pigeon Forge

Dolly Padton did open a theme park, she hired family and friends who where out of work and below the poverty line. She basically changed the economy there all by opening Dollywood..its a really fun theme park too! Leavenworth at Christmas is AMAZING!
The Salem Witch Trials is now believed to be due to an ergot outbreak in the area. Ergot is a fungus that grows on wheat, and is where LSD comes from. So people were tripping balls, getting paranoid, and freaking out.
It might have started as that, but it was mostly bratty girls accusing others of being witches because of petty jealousies, and others maybe thinking, hey that house will be available if it no longer has an owner.
That's been disproven numerous times. If it truly was so widespread, a lot of small children and old people would have eventually died. No one did (other than by execution). They also weren't growing the kind of rye ergot likes to colonize.
Actually hoof and mouth disease in animals was the true cause along with some contaminant in the water or food. Scientists have tested Salem and yeah it was something.

I highly recommend giving Pigeon Forge a visit sometime. It is quite a unique tourist location with tons to do. Dollywood is really fun if you like rollercoasters and bluegrass/country music. Pigeon Forge is also located right next to Gatlinburg which is also worth checking out especially if you like nature, mountains, and beautiful scenery.

Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg are extremely touristy. The cities are like county fairs, over the top. If you just want that, then yeah there's a lot going on. But most tourists go to the area for the Smokies & nature, & those cities are like the exact opposite. Dollywood is nice as a theme park, but the rest of it is like they just threw anything at the wall to see what would stick. It's so overtly touristy, it's a joke.
We used to go to Gatlinburg and Pidgeon Forge when I was in college. Unfortunately the houses we rented have burned down lol so I’m not sure what it’s like these days

I lived in Salem, Ma for 22 years. I have lived in several historic homes; one has an entrance to the catacombs in the wharf, another was on Howard St. Right across from the cemetery. Somewhere on the property that the cemetery sits on is the location where Giles Corey was pressed to death. The last address I called home is a beautiful BNB called The Henry Derby House. BTW that black house in the picture on your video is called The Witch House, but it was built in the 1630s by my 12 great grandfather who was a minister in the first church of Salem before he was run out of town for his religious beliefs not alighting with the Puritans. He went on to found Providence Plantations and the state of Rhode Island.

@bliebird2381 yes the man pressed to death was Giles Corey. His story is a very interesting one. He was not tried, so wasn’t executed. He died as a result of the sheriff trying to “press a confession “. The pressing lasted three days before he succumbed to the weight. I was fortunate enough to work for the first walking tour company in Salem, Ma. 😊

@bluebird3281 Yes. You have the right Giles Corey. However, we have no evidence that he actually said “more weight “, especially toward the end of his pressing. Towards the end it would have been impossible for him to get enough air into his lungs to speak. There was an account that may or may not be truth that Sheriff Corwin asked Giles Corey again “How do you plea on the charge of witchcraft?!” Giles tongue was hanging from his mouth and he was gasping for air; The sheriff used his walking stick to stuff Giles’ tongue back into his mouth and repeated the question. Giles Corey may very well have said those famous words in the beginning of his pressing, but it is highly doubtful that he was able to speak toward the end. Fun fact; the original court documents from the witch trials are not housed in Salem, but in Boston.💗😊

Leavenworth is even prettier in the winter. They decorate the whole town for Christmas.
Being from the Pacific Northwest, I've been to Leavenworth a few times, once at Christmas, which is really pretty spectacular with the snow, the town lights, etc. and of course there's skiing not far away as well. It's on one of the most scenic highways in the West, US Highway 2 through the North Cascade Mountains. It's located in a valley that extends southeast to the city of Wenatchee. The area is known for its fruit, especially apples and cherries, as well as vineyards (really good wine produced in the area all the way to Chelan) and some really good breweries as well. I like going in the fall for the fall colors and the great wine and beer tasting. I've never been there for Oktoberfest, but it's supposed to be a good time.
My daughter-in-law’s mom and step dad lived just outside Leavenworth but ended up moving down to Wenatchee where my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter live because during the winter it could be a real challenge to get into town for grocery shopping, etc. It is beautiful at Christmas, and Oktoberfest is a lot of fun!
I lived about 3 hrs away from Pigeon Forge... it was the perfect spot for a weekend getaway. So fun & so much to do! And very close to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Should be on your list of places to visit someday!
Salem is really fun. You can go the spooky paranormal places, or the more historical places (or tours). I do NOT recommend going anywhere near Halloween. Goes from quaint, old town, to witch-ghost-demon explosion - people dress up in costume. I mean, it can be an experience if you like a lot of people around you. I've done it. And I love Halloween. But that was too much, even for me.
A friend of mine used to go for years but she said it's too commercialized and busy these days to go at Halloween.

We spent a Christmas in Leavenworth Wa once about 10 years ago. It felt like a movie set. Absolutely gorgeous.
We have been flooded with snowbird retirees moving in to our town. Greenville, SC. It’s truly beautiful and a foodie town with great food and beer breweries. Downtown used to be where our artists lived. Now it’s full of $ million dollar condominiums. Sigh. We vacationed in Pigeon Forge/ Gatlinburg Tennessee this year. There were bears in our backyard of our air b&b. It was wonderful!
Never been to ANY of these places, but I HIGHLY request you check out Eureka Springs, Arkansas! Think of Jerome, Arizona… but MORE hilly, businesses built ONTOP of businesses, houses and businesses built INSIDE the rocks and hills, stairs to get up and down places, winding spaghetti roads, LOADS of history, haunted places (including the famous Crescent Hotel), and LOADS of Victorian-era buildings (both of the time, and newly-constructed).

Another town along the lines of Jerome is Galena IL. It has stairs that lead throughout the town, awesome restaurants and a trolley tour. And about 4 hrs north is Wisconsin Dells, WI, which is a town built around water parks and other amusements. At the end of September, north of the Dells in Warrens is an absolutely huge Cranberry Festival. But my advice would just wander around maps and look at street views and pictures.
Whittier, Alaska is a seaport that serves the Alaska Railroad's connection to the interior through a tunnel under the mountains. It's also a port for cruise ships that visit the glaciers in Prince William Bay. Cruise ships drop off passengers to ride the Glacier Train to visit scenic glaciers. What you see in the pictures is the entire town.
I lived in Prescott AZ (45 minutes from Jerome) and drove HWY 89 to Jerome to get to Sedona all the time and the road is awesome! Jerome itself is a tourist trap. Haunted hamburger is easily the most expensive burgers in the area.
Gibsonton Florida was a small town mainly consisting of Ringingly Brothers and various carnival employees. But they pretty much have either died or moved elsewhere. The few that remain are most likely retired. The area is being rejuvenated with new homes and businesses. I lived in the next town over for 20 years. I moved away 6 years ago and miss it every day.
Its a suburb of Tampa with many cookie cutter developments around.
@mrright1068 True. However, close to everything. 13 miles to downtown , 15 to MacDill, hour to Orlando, or the beach, even less to Sarasota. It's really central to everything. When I first moved there, it was considered the boondocks. Now it is so built up that it is unrecognizable. Restaurants, shops, gas stations, schools, movie theaters, hospitals, new homes, of course, new roads, new marina, and so on. The 3 bedroom, 2 bath home I paid 100k for is now selling for over 400k. The cost of homes has become outrageous. Shoebox homes with a door that are roughly 1200 sqft are listed at 350k, and those are townhouses. It's just ridiculous. The insurge of people coming from California and New York are making it impossible to afford to live in Florida anymore. Home and car insurance has doubled if not tripled for some. The economy is out of control, and we are all, literally, paying the cost.

in the 90s, the largest residential community of side show performers in the u.s. was in Texas, an unincorporated county that has since been absorbed by other counties. it was most famed for having four prominent members of the Jim Rose Circus in that period but having as many as 50 active performers and several retirees. But like most specialized communities, drama ensues, tourists come to gawk and people move on. Besides by the 2k, who wasn't a freak?
Flying to Belfast this weekend to visit and attend the GA Tech/FSU Season opener in Dublin. If you can get tickets, come watch a USA College game! Should be good, lots of people are flying over for the game. On another note, I live near Seaside FL, and go through every so often. It's basically a place for super rich to have a 5+ million dollar beach house that they use 1 or 2 times a year.

In the mid 2000s my dad built homes in Seaside Beach, Rosemary Beach and several other small towns there. It's an incredible area, definitely my favorite part of Florida.

I like to go in the summer because you can float the river around the town and they have an awesome 4th of July festival with hours of fireworks it’s pretty fun.
you need to visit Jupiter, Sebastian, and Vero beach Florida: these are east coast towns, no where near as humid as Orlando and similar regions. you have to go visit Maine, cedar point park in Ohio, kings island park in Kentucky, Tuscan Arizona can be fun, just not in summer, and California sucks to live, but visiting Santa Monica can be fun. Carson city Nevada, Reno Nevada is quite beautiful, just dont go in the middle of summer.
i’ve been to a few of these actually, but the most notable for me is tangier island! there’s actually an even smaller island called smith island nearby. when i visited, only around 100 people lived there! they don’t have a grocery store and had to order food to arrive via boat which someone would get every sunday.

The only towns I’ve been to from this video are Leavenworth, Washington and Salem, Massachusetts. One of my ancestors was involved in the witch trials (and not in a good way) as he was one of the accusers that lead to a hanging. Thomas Chandler was his name.

Just south of Sarasota, in Venice, it used to be the winter home of Barnum and Bailey's circus. That's where I live.

Jerome is a great place to wander around in. It is full of switchbacks so, yes they have stairs to cut up or down to the road for those on foot. It was pretty much a ghost town for a while and is full of mining history. When I moved to the area in the early 80's most of the residents were older hippies that made pots or jewelry, tie-dyed shirts, etc. It was like, "Come shop and buy my things and then get out of town!" (Or at least that is how I felt.) It is quite different now with lots of cute shops and good restaurants and even places to stay overnight. The drives to get in and out of town over Mingus Mountain are beautiful winding roads, tall pines, and places to glimpse the beautiful red rocks of Sedona across the valley. Loved going over the through Jerome, and down into Cottonwood by the Verde River. One of my favorite day trips.
Jerome, AZ is very cool and retains many old buildings from the 1890’s. It became a ghost town until the 60’s when hippies came to Jerome. It continues to be very quirky. The old hospital, is now a hotel and is very haunted. They do ghost tours there and at many Jerome sites.

Thirty years ago it was so much different. Today, it's completely unrecognizable.
John Ringling (of the Ringling Brother's circus) called Sarasota FL. home. In fact, Sarasota was home to the Circus Hall of Fame on US 41 across from the airport. The circus folks would spend the winter in Venice, Florida, just south or in Sarasota. Carl Wallenda, the famous hire wire artist had a home behind my aunt's house. Sarasota HIgh school had a program called the Sailor Circus, where the circus folks would teach various acts, like trapeze and high wire, because it meant work during the winter. The circus decided to move to Orlando in the late 1980s to create Circus World. Just a little history lesson from my old home town.
That was their winter home. Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus also had a home in Baraboo, Wisconsin. It is home to the Circus World Museum, which features a whole lot of their wagons and other artifacts and has circus performances under the big top during tourist season.
I live in Beaufort, NC and it's an awesome quaint town with much history and alot of ship wreck diving. Also many festivals, great fishing, wild horses and other things to see and do.

I think you should check out Dollywood sometime. It's a little different type of fun, than Orlando. But, it's a great amusement park. Dolly Parton actually owns it, and lives close by.
I live near Dollywood. Pigeon Forge. It takes us about an hour to get there. The whole town is a party. You can do anything from moonshine tasting, which I highly recommend to splash country, which is a Water theme park there are Ripley’s believe it or not museums there haunted houses just about anything you could imagine doing on vacation, you can do in pigeon Forge. They have Ripley’s aquarium of the Smokies and it’s an amazing place, if you’re ever in this area, I highly recommend Forge for at least three days
Pigeon Forge is a ton of fun. It’s about 4 hours away from where I grew up, and was a great weekend getaway. Plus the next town over is Gatlinburg, which is a beautiful German town nestled in the mountains with all kinds of cool shops and restaurants and ski lifts that take you up the mountain for gorgeous views. It’s also very touristy like Pigeon Forge, so you want to go in the off season.

I live only a few minutes from Salem Massachusetts! They have some really cool stuff around there, it's a huge tourist spot and gets very busy around Halloween especially, due to its history. There's historical places of interest and tours, horror museums, and lots of other cool things worth seeing. It's common to just see people walking the streets of Salem wearing witch hats, no matter the time of year.
Jerome Arizona is awesome. They have some cool museums ranging from motorcycles to mining. There’s a bunch of wine tasting bars and there’s 2-3 actual bars. Plus the haunted hotel. Great day trip.
I've been to Jerome a lot. If you're going from Phoenix to Sedona, take a few hour detour and check it out. When all the copper and silver was mined out, the town was about 5000 people. Then it nearly became a ghost town. In the 70s bohemiam types moved in and made an artsy haven. Then it became touristy. There's hiking up on Mingus Mountain, and through the twisting Mingus Pass you are on to Prescott. Parking is a son of a bitch on weekends. The town is basically a narrow switchback up the side of the mountain with several dead-end spurs, and stairs connecting them.
We went to Gatlinburg, which is right next to Pigeon Forge for an anniversary. Found a cute b&b in the woods, but got to do all the fun stuff "in town." Quite lovely!

I live in Oregon, but I have been to Leavenworth Washington the town that looks like a German village and it is very beautiful. I would love to go in the winter and take a horse drawn sleigh, growing up friends of the family had an antique sleigh And we would hitch the horses up and go for rides was a blast. I was very young though great memories.
Ok so I lived in Apollo Beach Florida which is 6 miles from Gibsonton. Drove thru it everyday to work in Tampa...1990 -2014. Yes there the lobster boy family lived...check that out it's a story on its own and yes no there is nothing there lol.

I grew up on and off during my childhood in Whittier, AK.
Haven't been back to Whittier since about 1986. I moved from there to Anchorage so I could go to a real High School. (* shoutout to Robert Service High School, class of 1989!!)
Living in Whittier in the 70s/80's was like living on Mars. No computers/internet/cable TV/ or TV in general.
Too many memories to mention on how weird it was to live there.
Yes, we walked the tunnel to school.
Yes, we would 'play' inside the Buckner Building, this was before it was all locked up like it seems to be now.
At one time you could walk the tunnel from the Buckner to the old power building, and that was knocked down years ago.
I used to live a few minutes from Pigeon Forge, in a little town called Kodak, Tennessee. Dolly Parton grew up in that area. Now I live near the "other" Beaufort, in SOUTH Carolina. We pronounce it , "Buford". It's also a cool little town, with a historic district dating from before the Civil War, and was the home of Robert Smalls, a slave sea captain who stole his master's ship and sailed it to the Union territory. He was able to give them loads of defense info, and taught them how to sail in the treacherous waters of the Southern seacoast. Beaufort became a Union port after that.
Jerome and Sedona are probably my 2 most favorite places on earth. My art has been picked by a gallery in each which to me is the highest achievement. More so than any gallery in New York or L.A.
15:30 it's cheap because it's in West Virginia. the economy there is incredibly weak. if you can work remotely and manage to get decent internet service, one could go far.
I haven’t been to any of these towns but I do have a friend the lives in Washington and she told me if I ever come out to visit again that she would take me to visit Leavenworth. Also, Michigan has a town similar to Leavenworth. The name of the town is called Frankenmuth and I have visited that town a few times. It has a Christmas store called Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland and is opened 361 days a year.
I'd recommend Seaside Heights, along the shore of New Jersey (south of New York City).
There's good boardwalk amusements right along the beach.
But only in the summer!
Leavenworth is beautiful. Was there last October and was mezmorized by the pinkish iridescence looking leaves on the trees outside our motel. Winter time is beautiful with Christmas lights. On one anniversary trip in January, we saw fireworks at night against the snow covered mountains. Beautiful! Town Square is cool with horse draw carriages and pretty a park. Yes, it's just like what you said with the shops and people watching. There is also a reindeer farm close by.
Jerome, AZ is kinda fun but only cool for the afternoon. It’s a good place to get BBQ for lunch. A good full day trip is to drive from Sedona (you have to see videos of that town) to Jerome for lunch and end up in Prescott for a night of saloons and an incredible meadery.
I lived in Cottonwood and in Sedona. Prescott is my happy place in AZ. I can't believe that Jerome doesn't have a single coffee shop. Lol.
If I ever go to Tennessee, I'm DEFINITELY hitting Pigeon Forge. Only gotten to ride go karts once, and it was on the smallest crappiest track ever, and it was STILL super fun. Those tracks look great, and I love wooden roller coasters, so it looks like they have some of those to check out, too.
The Mothman Prophecies 2002 is a good movie. It's loosely based on supposed actual events.
Leavenworth Washington, lived in Washington my whole life, and I can tell you this state has a bit of everything, desert to rainforest
I think I live in the most average State and city. Des Moines Iowa excels at only 2 things, ribs and sweet corn, but any vegetable will grow here in the black dirt.
im with ya about Whittier Alaska, it would drive me bonkers to live in a little box within a big box with the rest of the town !
now a cool place to visit in alaska is juneau, and barrow alaska, those are some beautiful places.
oh and a weird place he left out is a little island called Yamacraw Island (Daufuskie Island) off the coast of South Carolina that is a strange little place.

You might find the Gullah (or Gullah Geechee) people who live in the Lowcountry and islands off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia interesting. The Gullah-Geechee culture is influenced by the Caribbean, as many enslaved Africans spent time on Caribbean islands before arriving in America. The Gullah people were isolated for a long time and have developed a distinctive culture and traditions that have been passed down through language, agriculture, and spirituality. I'd never heard of them before 2005 when I read an article about the Bible being published in Gullah. There are a few short videos on YT about them.
Gullah culture is from Africa, not the Caribbean. Enslaved who hit the islands rarely went anywhere else.

The first town, Seaside Florida, is next to Rosemary Beach Florida where we often go on vacation, renting a beach house for a week with friends. It is really like this in person too, it's so clean and laid out perfectly with walking paths that are cement along the nicely landscaped roadway, the main one being 30A that everybody down that way is familiar with.
I live the next town over from Salem, Massachusetts and literally could walk over to where you see the images in this video. One of the largest Halloween celebrations in the country is held in Salem each year. Several hundred thousand people flock to the city from all over the world during the month of October. On Halloween, you’ll have massive crowds coming in by train from Boston and surrounding communities plus all the tourists who join in the festivities including a costume ball, parade, etc. People wear the most amazing costumes and spend the day and night having a great time. Everything is family oriented and shenanigans are not tolerated. They bring in police from surrounding communities and Boston to make sure everybody has a safe and fun experience. They even bring in mounted police to see over the crowds. It’s crazy. As a local, you avoid going to or through Salem during this month because it is wild with people. You would love it! To see what it’s like around that time, watch either Hubie Halloween with Adam Sandler or Hocus Pocus with Bette Midler as they were filmed in Salem around the Halloween festival. Either will give you a visual of Salem during Halloween.
I would say $144, 000.00 home is more of a normal price for a home. You get into tourist trap towns, big cities, and states that have high cost of living drive the prices way up.
That depends what part of the country you're in AND what type of home. That figure is way below the national average. I'm in a very rural area in TN & that's a low figure even for a mobile.
@@Lynn705HalYou are exactly right. Where I am from, actually , in Oklahoma and Kansas, $150, 000.00 would get you a decent home, and probably less than 10 yrs ago, a very nice home. That being said, demand and population growth play a role. I do believe we are going to have another housing market bust at some point soon.
Since 2020 especially, 250k homes are now 400k.

Here in Wisconsin you are looking at about $250,000 for a starter home. You can find cheaper ones in some small towns away from the bigger cities, however prices here jumped quickly. If you want a house up north you better be a millionaire. Hence why so many people from Chicago and Illinois have bought so much of the property for summer homes!

I can tell you from experience because I have been to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee not once but twice. You literally could not look in any direction without seeing a go-kart track somewhere. I remember one in particular was nascar themed, with not only numbers but also sponsor type stickers on all of them but they were scrambled randomly. The last time I was there (April 2012) there was one where it was basically a giant loop, you go up like I think 3 or 4 times before there's just a giant downward slope before starting over again. Honestly it was fun as hell & I actually want to go there again to be honest
I lived in Beaufort NC for about 10 years and it's a nice little town. It's right on Bogue Sound and Bogue Inlet is a short boat ride to access the Atlantic Ocean. There are hundreds of shipwrecks off the coast of the Outer Banks here in NC which is why they call the area the Graveyard of the Atlantic. It also has some great fishing, both in the Sound and in the Atlantic and one of the biggest fishing tournaments in the U.S. is held there every year, The Big Rock Marlin Tournament. The winner this year caught a 516 lb. (234 kilos) blue marlin and won $1,816,375.
I live in north Georgia and I have been to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg Tennessee many times. I love going and there are so many things to do. You have nature trails and numerous scenic views. In town you have dinner theaters and restaurants. There are also numerous wine,moonshine and hard Cider tasting rooms. Really there is something for everyone. Another place to ho is Helen, Georgia it is another town that is done in the Bavarian style and it has it's own octoberfest every year.
Leavenworth is a beautiful town every season. I got married there!

It was a very interesting movie. I don't like to hype a movie too much. It's never as good/bad/cool to everyone. So I'll just say. Even if you hate it. You want to see what is happening next.
I lived in Knoxville, TN for almost 20 years and I took my sons to Pigeon Forge all the time. We had season passes to Dollywood every year. If you prefer a more peaceful side to it go to Cades Cove. Pigeon Forge can get very overwhelming after a while.
Pigeon forge is my favorite vacation spot. We’ve had season tickets for Dollywood for years. Met Dolly a couple times there over the years. It’s a great place to visit ANY time of the year.

Adam, if you are going to Orlando, come cruise through Mt. Dora, FL, only 45 minutes north of Orlando. I think you will love this little quaint town I live in. I am originally from Miami and fell in love with this little town.
The movie with Richard Gere is called The Mothman Prophecies. It wasn't a great movie, but it wasn't bad either.
Lived in Whittier as a small child for awhile, and enjoy Leavenworth at every opportunity. :)

I lived in Sarasota Florida for a time. Home of the Barnum and Bailey Circus and the circus folk. Use to watch our neighbor practice the highwire in the off season. Little kids, like 5 yrs old were up there too.
Jerome is cool. A similar town in AZ, which I personally prefer, is Bisbee. It's down near the border, but also an old copper mining town built on a mountainside. They have a annual race there called the Bisbee 1000 because you'll climb that many steps as you traverse the course. It's right next to Douglas, which also has a lot of history, and not far from Tombstone, which most people know at least by name.
Jerome, AZ is also home to Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer for Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. It's also the location of his winery Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards.
We live not too far from Seaside in Florida. We’ve been there several times and it’s pretty nice. Lots of small artistic shops and interesting places to shop. The entire Florida panhandle along the Gulf Coast is beautiful.
I can’t say enough about Pigeon Forge. It is a great place to visit and lots to do for the kids. I love the Smoky Mountains. Especially in the fall with the beautiful fall colors. My son and I are actually wanting to purchase a home around there and turn it into an Airbnb. And yes the go carts are fabulous. A few are different levels. So fun. I highly recommend this place plus Gatlinburg down the road.
It might not have been weird enough to make the list (others would differ) but Key West is a very unique spot in the US. Well first of it not in the US ...they call it the Conch Republic. My friend is a maintenance manager for one of the few big hotels on the island. His daily transportation on the island is a solar powered mini truck that he designed and built. He is one the less weird people you will meet there. Yes it is very touristy but I think it would match your vibe well. If you weren't already committed to your plans in Orlando I would have recommended you to go there. Perhaps someday.
Jerome is also a ghost town in Arizona. It's also not wheelchair friendly in case anyone who uses a wheelchair has thought about going.
I used to live near Point Pleasant, WV. The county it's in is mostly a farming area. It was the most peaceful place I have ever lived. Most of the housing prices are cheaper in WV because the cost of living is cheaper.
So the bar in Gibsonton, FL was the one I went to on my 21st birthday. I lived in that town for about 3 years. I loved it. It is just about as rural as you can get on the outskirts of Tampa. The people were mostly nice. And it was beautiful with a rich esoteric history.
