How Exercise Benefits Your Brain - Exercise and The Brain (animated)

- We all know that exercise makes us feel better, but most of us have no idea why. We assume it's because we're burning off stress or boosting endorphins. But the real reason we feel so good when we exercise is that it makes the brain function at its best. And in my opinion this benefit is far more important than what it does for the body.
Building muscles, conditioning the heart and lungs are essentially side effects.
Nowadays we spend most of our time sitting behind a desk or lying on the couch, and we have basically removed movement from our lives.
Our ancestors had to walk five to ten miles on an average day, just to be able to eat.
Since it takes tens of thousands of years for our biology to evolve, you can see there's a huge mismatch between our lifestyle and our genes.
The brain isn't a fixed organ that cannot be changed. It's adaptable and it can increase in size like any other muscle on your body. Or in the koala's case, decrease in size.
So guess what turns out to be the best thing you can do for you brain today. That's right, physical exercise.

Me too 👍
POV: you are here because your gym teacher sent you this but your suprised on how many people got it as well
yep
DEARS GODS YEAH

The brain shrinking due to lack of physical activity makes sense, seems like most successful people are also fit
that's why my goal is to be healthy and have a good job that i like that makes at least the necessary amount of money
@@samdoesstuff4924 Place food on shelf in a store, i can tell you this will keep you moving all day
POV:your looking at all the comments that says your gym teacher sent you here

i'm 13, and i'm trying to not be a failure when i grow up. so i set a little habit where i go out on my bike every day at 1 and 5 o'clock and i've been doing this for about a week and a half now. i hope this one actually sticks because i love riding my bike and i often find myself looking at the clock constantly to see if it's time to go.
That's good! It sounds like you're already on the right track for a successful life. Keep it up!
@@Palomino0813 i just wanna grow up, i'm kinda tired of being a kid because it prevents me from doing most of these things
@@samdoesstuff4924 I remember how that is--needing permission to go anywhere or do anything, even if you just want to take a ride or walk down the street. Focus on what you can do, and see if you're able to do just a little more, and a little more, and a little more.
Haha good job
Beat Spider i hurt my fucking knee somehow, like i just woke up and now when i walk it hurts. how disappointing
I’m here cuz my gym teacher sent this to me as part of my assignment aka my exercise routine
Why does this comment section only have 10 comments, and it's one year old. This is a good video
Well it's because most of it seems lifted from a video by "what I've learned"
At the gym
I love to exercise and do it 6 days a week. This is self love to myself. I feel good, proud and accomplished. I’m currently hanging from a bar. I started with 10 seconds and I’m at 45 seconds now
PROGRESS👍
🙏
I'm here from gym class
We all are

*My teacher forced me to watch this video and write a one page summary on this video even though the video doesn't even explain how and why it's bad for brains to shrink*
Yep
Not everyone is a child my friend
I started working out (intense, weightlifting) in 8th-9th grade and never quit - made it a lifetime habit. Now in my '60's, look and feel decades younger [my providers have said so and are impressed] , and have no health issues like so many in my age bracket [medicare loves people like me]. It is NEVER too late to start, although the longer you wait the harder it will be.
I really found a dimensions of changes in myself after exercising
can we start normalized putting answers in comments to help eachother? that’d be sick
I agree
Yes! I am over 60 yrs old! And believed exercise is wonderful for everything! Thanks for an inspiration video 🙏💜

Dynasty HONESTTLYY

“Exercise makes you feel good”
Leg day: Am I joke to you?
High-intensity aerobic exercises do.
I noticed when I started dancing and working out my grades spiked and now I am able to accomplish tasks like I rarely procrastinate :0

Great info! And great video. Thanks for the link for the book. You literally sparked my interest into reading it! 😁
Thanks a million.
Thanks for you and thank all of you
Thanks for sharing this info. I love the animation, and I really needed some inspiration to get off my butt and get moving.
We are all here from gym class. ._.
Just admit it.

This video is well presented and has some good information, but the multiple mentions of women having "mood swings" and especially the line "but it's not their fault" come across as outdated, and fairly condescending. Of course now we know that men also have hormonal cycles, and our cycle is shorter than women's, so our "mood swings" are more frequent. All humans have mood swings, and all humans have hormones which strongly effect them. Let's stop projecting the narrative that women are some kind of moody "other."
But you are assuming women are women and not men. You are in danger of misgendering a transexual or someone who does not identify with a gender.
The narrator is probably hispanic. Stone age dude. Sorry to say it but it's true.
Excellent video
Well done.
Thank you so much
No one ever talks about this thank you people need to take notes!!
Super bro ,really nice
Sounds like skiing makes you a genius, cardio with complex movements
When i started to workout and be more active my grade went up. Never thought it further, so yeh it makes sens
Im interested about the topic of the koalas having shrunken brain during evolution. Where did you find this information? which study does actually confirm it?
I turned off Adblocker only for ur channel :)
Exercise definitely improves your well-being.
I would really like some more sources. It doesn't seem fully reliable to not dounle check the information from the book. Also would I really like you to add the studies the book and you are referring to, so I can be critical and review them myself.
Thanks for commenting.
Two studies mentioned in the video:

this is the best channel on youtube
I just exercised ten minutes ago. Is that better for my current focus than if I had exercised 12 hours ago, but not 10 minutes ago?
what is that 2013 stuffy about bdnf, do you have a reference?
POV: your PE teacher sent u here for a quick "10 min" video to try and convince u to exercise more
A young sea squirt has a proto-brain that enables it to move about the ocean floor until it finds a suitable home upon which to affix itself. Once it does, it will attach itself like a barnacle and stay there for the rest of its life. Once attached, the squirt will digest its brain for food.
I am 14 and i am training like a demon but i realized that i am obsessed with gym and unfortunately when i was injured i felt into deppresion while i was seing my biceps leaving cant imagine how my life whould be wihtout working out
I learned when u workout 2 hours or more u can extend the benefits of the brain and body
Every day?
Men have mood swings too you know.
I got sent here from my gym teacher 🙄
Which country are u from .... Tell me pls what is this all gym teacher thing ...coz comments are filled with this thing only
EduTech Gamer that’s personal info
Ok
Love the video but just one point: High Intensity Aerobic Exercise is an oxymoron… once you exercise at a higher intensity, it’s no longer aerobic - it’s anaerobic. I know even in research they make this mistake - but they should call it High Intensity Cardio Exercise.
Wow😮❤
Who else watched this vid before your gym teacher sent you it
:no one
I work out 24 -7
we're all her for answers, not the "who's here" comments
Actually brain works faster when u exercise regularly and also improves ur memory 🤘

Thanks for the heads up!
I don't think that correlation between fitter students and better test scores proves that fit people are more intelligent. Correlation does not mean causation. Nonetheless, this is a pretty interesting video. Good work.
Thanks for the comment. I never stated that being fit makes you more intelligent though. Fit students have higher test scores because they have an improved ability to learn - thanks to BDNF.
However if the fit student doesn't have an interest in learning anything, then he obviously won't score any better, even with the boost of BDNF. You still have to apply yourself, exercise just makes learning easier :)
Wow
Exercise doesnt help with mens mood swings? Seems a little off!
Nobody said that?

4:06 "If you're a woman, you can expect less mood swings" ... Wow, really blatant sexism.
How are taking 2 or 3 days break from exercise not called living a sedentary lifestyle?
@@Bentoto97 did you respond to the wrong comment?
@@necromancer-x What do you mean? Do you understand what I replied to you?
@@Bentoto97 No, I'm not sure what your reply has to do with my comment.
@@necromancer-x I wonder if taking a 2 or 3 days break from exercise and living a sedentary lifestyle for 2 or 3 days are the same or not.
Who the fuck rest 10 minutes in between set while lifting? Rest is usually less than a minute...sooooo what say you now there is a such thing as high intensity weight lifting with increasing weights/rest. With a good workout you'll be out of breath sweating and quaking with pain.
pov ur in middle school and ur teacher sent u this :/

who is here in 2020/21
Does exercise helps with insomnia?
Hell yeah! Work until you have no more in you. Trust me it works wonders. Brought me out of a deep and bad depression. Work your body!
THEWOLF OFTEXAS you never been on medication? Like antidepressants or psychiatrist drugs?
I have been on psychiatric drugs, more than a couple, and I have horrible trouble sleeping. I’m 45 and still go through heart wrenching cycles of depression and anxiety, which includes horrible sleep problems. The only thing that has ever helped my psychiatric AND sleep issues is when I’m on a good exercise habit. It really is like a magic pill that cures the brain, everything falls into place. It feels like the front half of my brain is actually there and not just dead. But then something really bad happens that starts a downward spiral. The only thing that works is exercise. We were born to move. It’s all about telling that demon to shut up and just do it even though it feels like your brain and body are stuck in a giant mud pit, which is where I am now. It’s so much easier to do “12 ounce curls” than to exercise, which ends up just stealing happiness from tomorrow.
I would recommend swimming. High intensity sets are probably best for you. After swimming, I fall asleep almost instantly!
What' s better yoga or gym?
