Exercise Makes You Smarter - This Is Why (animated)

- Back when I was in still in school there was this stereotype going around.
Kids who were nerdy and never did any kind of sports were considered the most intelligent and bright.
The jocks who were sporty and fit, were often branded as simple-minded and empty-headed.
So by following this stereotype you had two groups: Smart and weak. Dumb and fit.
However in the recent years, there's a new stereotype that's gained popularity: A smart jock.
An individual who is both intellectually gifted and is physically fit.
Did they win the genetic lottery or is it possible that exercise could make you smarter?
Today we'll look at the body-brain connection and how moving our body can benefit the brain.
Some of the studies mentioned in the video:

One tip from my learning for the exams - make the run a reward for learning. It is unbelievable how it tricks your mind! Earlier a run was "necessary evil" for me and I went 1x in 2 weeks. While learning I just simply changed the mindset from a "punishment" to a "reward". I swear I go running every single day since. Plus the benefit for learning! I finished with excellent grades and I keep running switching to trail running at the moment! :)
That's awesome to hear, I wish you all the best. :)
That’s brilliant
Txn bro
Going to try this
How did you trick yourself?
A small sidenote: increasing your heart rate also increases the amount of fuel available to your brain, which allows it to work better.
thats helpful ty

oohh maybe why some of us works better under preassure
Basically: "Doing 30 mins of cardio every day gives you an Exp gain buff that can last the whole day".

I grew up in Switzerland and we always had lots of different exercises to do. No fat kids ever - and still now they keep slim. Healthy eating habits is what you learn in Switzerland at home and school. I am forever learning and no take away at my house. Only home cooking. I feel good, happy and enjoy new experiences. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 😊👍
Not Switzerland, but, the "20-40 minutes exercise in the morning", threw me off. Isn't that called, "Going to school" anymore?? Geez. #)
What are healthy eating habits in Switzerland?
What kind of exeecise
@@silkegehtyoutubegarnichtsa892 she said lots of different exercises. Of course I see your point on going to school being a profitable one. Please take note that was not what her message was about, though, as there are many useful exercises in this world we live in.
Oh for goodness sake no need to be over the top. Have a take away occasionally, now and again..and some cake etc

Your longest video yet and it was great!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Better Than Yesterday Did you just get a ton of subscribers? You are at 23K right now and it seems like just a couple of weeks ago you were much lower than that. Obviously I am very happy, but I want to know how much of a jump you got!
Sorry to dissapoint, but I didn't get any subscriber jumps :) Been growing steadily at around 40 - 50 subscribers per day
Better Than Yesterday I must not have looked in awhile. I remember when you were at about 5,000 maybe even less. Glad you are getting steady growth!

This is my new favorite RUclips channel. I love that you don’t make empty statements, you back it up with solid science in simple terms.
It's hard to strike the balance between physical exercise and intellectual learning, especially when you are in the working world...
5-10mins physical workout is better than zero mins
I gotta make a new morning schedule then. Exercising for 15 minutes after wake up, and then rest for 10 minutes, and then study for 60 minutes. As time went on, I'll slowly increase the time period of those activities. Thanks bro, your channel is a great channel. Keep up the great work
I remember back in high school, my best friend who was the ace of the volleyball team was one of the smartest people at my school.
Jogging in place while listening to this. I used to exercise regularly and remember how much better I felt then.
Imagine how smart Stephen Hawking would have been if he could move.
James Benton Ticer that’d be like a cheat code
Probably not that smart. I think he was smart bcuz he couldnt move. He saw life in a different perspective. But that's just my opinion
@@ceropride5590 that doesn't explain why he was a genius with IQ over 160 before he lost any mobility at all.
@@lakhwinderg1 yes! No kidding :)
@@jamesbentonticer4706 kinda does. We can move so we dont take advantage of opportunities to learn we would rather do something alse. Obviously not speaking for everyone. I've already written a comment before in a different video but I really wanted to thank you for this video again. It is so simply explained and the way you're showing it is just amazing! For each video I watch from you, I literally learn something powerful. Actually it is the first time I watch videos of the same guy and each of them are excellent! Thank you. I saw you you didn't do any videos for almost and you may have turned the page, and it is too bad, but I hope you can find your own path and be happy!
Hopefully I can see your videos again, if not, just thanks!

I workout out 6 days a week and I love it so much. I’ve been doing it for 2 years now.
How many hour do you workout?
Have you seen any changes??
1-2 hours
Put the speed to ×1.25. You will have more time to exercise!
Or ... just read the title and dash out for a run!
Way better at 1.25 ty
Yes, the pace of speech is a bit slow.

Thank you so much for these videos ! They are so well researched and balanced views.
I am used to running and now i am lifting weights. I must admit, i understand my materials easily. I am reviewing for the Bar exams btw. Exercise is a must!
Lifting weights = Bar Exam
Thanks. The voice clarity made it easy to follow.

@@rodrigolinscaldas3305 we found the smart one finally
I live in cold Ireland and I remember during exam days how I woke up early morning( very cold ) and pump myself up in the gym, come back home, turn off all distraction and study.. This is the best study strategy I have ever done in my life.
This is true.. Even I feel this change..when i was used to do exercise and study😎
For me this is true I got sharper and smarter in class when I was working out and I am very active having myself confident since I stopped working out my confidence level just got slow and I am not active and sharp as it is but today I am working out again and it is really wonderful feeling of you having more creative sharper than most
When I was at the uni and had to study/memorise long texts I would always walk around the room while saying it out loud as I noticed that I would always remember faster when I was walking, now I know why :-D
Thanks a lot for sharing this inspiring and useful info😍❤. Loved the Naperville School Example !!!
This is how I lost over 30 kilos in 10 months. I did 2 to 3 hours of walking 3 to 4 times a week for the benefit I could give my brain and amazingly found out the spontaneity of how my body got affected.. from size triple XL, to SMALL.
Really what was your diet plan
Hi Giri Varshiniachar. I started my walking November of 2018. Prior to that, for around 2 to 3 years I have already been going on a one full meal and one or two snacks per day but all those times, every time I look in the mirror I don't see me getting smaller. When I started to walk in the manner I did and after just a couple of months, I started to notice my clothes were getting loose. Then, I realized that when you go on just plain diet, we may be losing weight but our bodies do not actually shrink on its own. From this time, the motivation to continue with both the diet and walking was getting more and more encouraging for me.
@@stellamiguel4063 this is motivating me
Sorry for the late reply Siri, I am not always online.
Yes. Don't be discouraged if you have been going on a diet and you don't seem to be getting smaller. Match your diet with walking. You will be doing your brain a big favor too.
I'm actually learning here than I am in school. I binge watch the vids in this channel once in a while. As someone who is very inactive, I could really say that I tend lag and is kinda slow to learn compared to my classmates who are very active in many physical activities.
Thank you so much for this!
Someday when I improve myself and get better, I won't forget to come back here and thank you for contributing in my self-improvement.
How I wish our school would teach us like this and care for us rather than making us robots and making us learn just for our "grades". It sucks ya' know..😔
But I'll do my best to learn outside of school like right now☺
Btw I know there's a slim chance that this comment would be read and will probably just drown in the sea of comments but I want to dedicate a song to you it's titled "Be the Future" by Dreamcatcher,Alexa and IN2IT. At the end of the video there is a message :>
thanks a lot my online guide/teacher!
So how did it go?
As always: excellent video. Thank you.
Exercising also makes you sleep better which improves everything else
I walk everywhere or take a bus if it's too far away. I am 43 now and will never stop walking or having a job where I move all day. My IQ is 150 and I know it is bc I exercised my whole life. I would love to see a scan of my brain to encourage me to keep on exercising. This is interesting and I want to research more about it.
I appreciate you making these videos
Sadly he doesn’t make videos anymore
@@jeanpingpresidentalibongos8703 why ? can you give me the reason? plsss
@@bearsvlog5338 I wish I knew the answer
It is not exact science but cardio or any form if exercise can boost your mood and fills you with a positive energy, now thats really a good start to do anything be it learning or cooking
It could be the reason why ideas come up after a pleasant, leisurely walk or fascinating activities such as after spending considerable time in one's hobby.
Yes. I can surely say that this video it makes me better than yesterday.
This guy really need more subscribers for these helpful videos.I subscribed
Thank you for your excellent work. You provide huge value.
Thx bro for this piece
Funny how Public Schools eliminated gym classes...it use to be a requirement.
Maybe a good thing? More awareness these days, if a child already ran that day its probably not good for them to run again if they pushed themselves in the extracurricular exercise.
Where is that?? My kids have 1 hour of PE every day
@@DimitriTheBarbarian I guess it depends on where you are. When I went to public elementary school in Queens, NY, we had PE for one hour each week. We had recess everyday, but we weren't allowed to run bc it was just a parking lot and they didn't want us to fall. Same when I went to Catholic junior high in that city (graduated 2003). Went to HS in Florida, and the requirement was everyday for just one semester. But I got out of it by taking a health class at the local community college (I already did my semester in HS in NY, there was a problem with transferring the credits).
@@jheanelltabana8713 all schools should have PE daily. It is beneficial, it creates life-long habit, and kids love it. Everyone wins
@@DimitriTheBarbarian I'm a kid and i hate it, i have social anxiety and puts me under alot of pressure...

Is even possible that this stuff might in part explain why we see that kids usually learn faster than adults?(because they tend to do a lot of movement during the day, on the contrary adult people tend to be more sedentary)

In my breaks at the day I will run more and do more fysical excersise, Jim Kwik also mentioned this

High intensity Aerobic exercise helps your brain become smarter, and helps with short term memory.
At one time, I believed that the "sports jocks" were brain dead. A physical impairment kept me from high school phys-ed. Hence, I devoted my energy to mental efforts, at the expense of physical strength. Yet, my mental abilities were around average. But one must weigh that with the mostly innocuous crap taught in public schools that one will seldom, if ever use. Despite 12 years of public schooling, I still have a mind. I spent most of the past 40 years reading, instead of regular exercise. This time was not totally devoid of physical activities as I build my home, remodeled other homes, and got into vehicle restoration. So, at age 75, I began a vigorous physical exercise program that I've stuck to for over 1 year.
I've learned that the brain, like the muscles, grows and makes new connections when studying and trying to solve problems.
From "Mindset" --Dr. Carol Dweck, page 219:
"When they do think about what intelligence is, many people believe that a person is born either smart, average, or dumb; and stay that way for life. But new research shows that the brain is more like a muscle--it changes and gets stronger when you use it. And scientists have been able to show just how the brain grows, and gets stronger when you learn".
You're trying way too hard to sound smart big fella.
@@t_s_1277 Thanks. You are way too kind.
So beautiful

@@t_s_1277 He's not. It just makes sense that he wrote that comment in an essay format as he is 76 years or older (I don't know his age), and spent most of his time reading.
Exercise and continous learning are lethal combination. Of course the benefits exercise will be useless if you only watch TV or scroll through FB every after exercise though.
How has this information not gone widespread
My first time listening. Awesome and very informative. I will add exercise to my daily routine. Since I’m studying now. Is walking for 20-30min ok to start?
U can start with 5 min run

Could also be that individuals who have more discipline will do better in both physical and mental activities. It takes a lot of discipline to workout hard like you do in school sports.
