    You called it on the Mora sharpening thing, it's 'easy' for people who suck at sharpening. It's the old effort vs skill dichotomy- if they suck at sharpening then a Mora might be the only knife they can get a decent edge with, and they'd waste more effort on something else only to ruin it.

    I agree about the Buck, a knife that big named a frontiersman with a thin hollow grind is an abomination. Hollow grinds alone is an abomination lol imo. I also agree with what you're saying about sharpening and the scandi grind. Most people say convex grinds are hard for people to sharpen but to me they're the easiest and simplest.

    I like Tops blades but their handles have the worst ergonomics for my hand of any knife brand. I'm sure there's some guy out there they fit like a glove, but it ain't me. I use Moras as shed and work station knives, to ensure there's always a knife handy and to keep other people from abusing my better knives. I'm not a fan of their more expensive models, because once they get up to the Garberg pricing there are a lot of better knives for that cost (Terava, Joker, etc). With Morakniv, how you feel about sharpening it depends on if you treat it as a Scandi grind or sharpen the micro bevel that almost all Moras come with (except the wood carving series).

  • @colinburgess9455
    @colinburgess9455 4 месяца назад +6

    I tend to end up convexing scandi grinds either accidentally or on purpose, if on purpose I convex the whole grind, making it a scandi-vex, it leaves a stronger edge and it’s still good at wood carving, just about all of my fixed blades are either fully convexed or the edge is convex, even my kitchen knives.

  • @Alkhoholic

    you can sharpen the scandi with eyes closed vs keeping an eye and a steady hand to maintain the correct angle while sharpening a knife with a micro bevel. It's not a matter of how much material is removed, it's based on skills. It takes more skill/technique to sharpen a micro bevel than a scandi.
    So an amateur in sharpening has a better chance to get a scandi grind sharp than a micro bevel.

I done all of my hand grinding on a 8 inch aluminum oxide water stone... imagine taking the 9% bevels to a high grind 7% convex down to a 11% zero ground convex edge... convex the grind right underneath the N.Z. down to a zero grind, i could get a 1x30 it's only 40$ for one at harbor freight right, I drew up two to size picture of the cross section to compare the two using a caliber, i got purple on my svord von tempsky Bowie, and today I experienced homemade stropping compounds, made from the slurry i wiped off my knife 😊 and I had to establish a plunge grind on the 9° bevel to plunge inward

    Yes, i do agree with everything you have said. Especially with the scandi stuff. They are absofick-n-lootly harder and more time consuming to sharpen. Your not missing the boat here. I remember watching a video of a bushcrafter dude showing how to touchup a scandi edge on a window edge of a car and other various things. The moment someone tries some of those things they've lost there true scandi edge and now have a secondary edge. Scandi based knives and blades are not worth the effort to me, especially when it comes to sharpening. I have one scandi knife left and haven't used it in years. Tips broke, edge chips, the sharpening part, too small for real work, handle is too round, they are so limited. They are good at carving wood and that's it. Might as well just carry a pocket knife. Awesome video. I like videos like this that are a rant/if only I'd known better, stuff. They usually bring up a point and/or help us be more aware of something.

  • @longrider42
    @longrider42 4 месяца назад +1

    Okay, so the 124 is no good for chopping or battoning wood. But, as a Knife, it is very good. I suspect that back in the day, I knife of this size was quite useful in gutting and skinning buffalo. And all over camp chores, requiring a knife. As for the steel. Buck has been using the 420HC since 1992, and I think they have it figured out. The one big problem I had when I bought it. Was the price. It is way over priced, but then again, most of the 100 series of Buck Sheath knives are a tad on the pricey side. Do I like mine, yes very much so. Will I ever use it. Who knows when I might have to gut and skin a buffalo or a cow :) Oh, the one problem I actually have with the 124, is how squared off the handle is. One of these days, I will round off the corners. But that is not a hard thing to do.

      I didn't get that vibe at all. It came across as knives he wanted to love but found flaws with. The ESEE 6 for example, the length is nice but normally you'd want some heft on a blade that long to facilitate chopping, whereas it's too thin and light to chop very well. Sure it's slicey, but the only time you really need a long slicer is in the kitchen, otherwise you're better off with a shorter blade to give you finer control (which you get with an ESEE 3 or 4).

    No "Frontiers men" worth there salt, would have used a knife to chop wood with. That is what a hatchet, tomahawk or belt axe was and still is for. Because they did not want to damage their knife. We aren’t frontiersmen, we have better steel and thicker blades, most of the frontiersmen used trade knives which aren’t much different from kitchen or butcher’s knives, which aren’t good at chopping anyway. I don’t think Danial Boon would carry an axe in his travels if he had the steels we have now. It’s fine if you want to be nostalgic I have great respect for many of those guys.

    • @LoreTunderin
      @LoreTunderin 4 месяца назад +3

      Those 'frontiersmen' also didn't have access to modern tool, spring or powdered steels like CPM-3V, and the heat treatments were questionable if they existed at all. They HAD to take care of their knives because they were just as likely to break or rust away if they were abused in any way. Nowadays there's no excuse for a knife not standing up to batonning kindling if it's large and marketed to outdoorsmen.
