In this video I describe what would be my favorite knife, if it existed. But, I do show some randall knives (my favorite maker) and how they are very close to my perfect knife.
In 1965 I was staging out of Camp Schwab in Okinawa headed for Vietnam. A friend showed me a Model 14 Randall he'd just bought, and I was "smitten". Ordered one for myself, paid $25 for it, and carried it with me for a year's tour in the Chu Lai theatre of Vietnam. (Spoiler alert - I never tested it in any "live" scenarios.). Fast forward 37 years; my older son was headed for the Iraqi War (2003 edition) and I gifted that Randall to him. My younger son very soon followed the older into Iraq. One Saturday I was lazily looking thru an on-line Randall catalog and on a whim texted Randall explaining that I had two sons "in theatre" and one had my old knife; I'd love it if the younger one could carry his own Model 14. Not an hour later I had a return text from Gary Randall inviting me to call him on Monday - "Your son is in military action - he doesn't wait in line!". Within two weeks my younger son was carrying his own Model 14. What'd I pay for the 2nd one? $375. (Oh, by-the-way - the "S" on the hilt of your knife means "Stainless Steel".)
Didn't use to be the best part of town but now they have new developments surrounding them. Just went there today and put a Trapper 25-5 on order. The "S" stands for stainless.
The knife Bo saw in use was a William Scagel. Had the good fortune to talk with him when he was the guest of honor at our knife show in Atlanta many years ago. The S on the blade stands for stainless steel.
Have owned several Randall's over the years. Many people don't realize that once, sometimes twice a year, Randall knives will do a one day stock sale where they sell all their unclaimed knives at regular price. In other words no wait time. You get them in a month.
Randall’s 0-1 steel is extremely good steel. I’ve field dressed deer and wild hogs with my 3-6 and 12-8 many years. Compared to other custom steels they hold an edge better in my experience. The “S” stands for stainless which I did not like. The 0-1 held an edge a lot longer skinning large game.
Really enjoy the video. Randall knives are also my favorite. S logo means "Stainless". Most of the Randall knives are made in carbon steel (O1) or stainless. Some are only made in stainless (as Model 28, the Fireman,...)
The two single hilt knifes you have are both model 5’s “ camp and trail”. The small one looks like a 5 inch blade and the bigger one looks like a 8 inch. Nice collection
I have my uncle's Randall that he carried in Vietnam for three tours. I believe it's a model 1. The blade is about 8 inches long. I haven't looked at it for years. I'm going to have to get it out and give it some love.
I have a 7.5 in model 18 that my dad bought in 1999 for the whole Y2K thing and he gave it too me and about a year later we had to go to an arthritis conference for my little sister who has arthritis anyway it was in Orlando and my dad found a website where ppl talk abt their Randall knives and this one guy who worked at nasa offered us a ride to the museum and invited us to see a launch at nasa he ended up being a great guy but I thought to myself this is how I die 😂
I have a Lile #19 hunting knife made in 1984. Lile used D2 steel and beautiful sambar stag handles. Lile made Stallone’s first blood knife. My Randalls hold an edge longer field dressing large game though.
I have several favorite knives, I'm no high end collector. I'm just a Blue Collared private citizen that loves knives. I'm on a waiting list for a couple of WTG knives because those are quite popular as well, I won't have to wait for 5 years though thankfully.
Had a mdl 8 4" in😅da sandbar stag. Currently carry gambler 4" w ivorite handle. Is 435 in cat. Bought form from ag russells. Paid 625 cuz wait list is almost 6 yr now

They look real nice. I will keep my eyes open for a pre-owned from a sale! How do they justify their high costs? For $700, i would rather buy something that goes boom. I really would like to get a cannon. Not to shoot cannonballs but just the concussion. Long time ago, our neighbors would shoot off their oxyacetylene cannon on the 4th o July. It was so loud over the lake! You probably have one. If not look into one. Probably legal down yonder
If you order from the catalog, you can get a model 1 all purpose fighter for about $470. I’ve ordered two for my sons. My personal Randall is a model 5, 6” camp and trail. These knives are all hand made by the Randall family. Having a waiting list of six years tells me that they probably aren’t charging more than the market will support.
Yep. Unless you can find one of the 5 dealers, and then you can get one in about 6 months. One of them happens to be here close by in Gulf Breeze, Florida.
My Randall Attack 14 came from a mysterious source. A freaking hippy in Nelson BC. So strange. I carry mine while upland bird hunting in northern Alberta. M37 Ithaca & my Randall. Personal security! Your third knife looks like an Attack 14. Border patrol grip?

I'm not sure why a Randall knife would be more valuable than any other hand made knife, there are plenty of knife makers that are just as good or better..

@@Robertbreaker3 we're currently living under Bidenomics and a double digit inflation rate. Savers of all types are being penalized. Put money in precious metals, if anything. Gotta put your money to work for you to get anything back, because just parking it will get it eaten up by someone else. The savings account with a half of one percent interest rate is a joke. The ponzi scheme stock market will take decades to recover and you don't have that long before retirement Robert. I don't either. The tree farm was a great idea. Now you gotta go harvest trees and plant new ones
Randall’s look and feel outdated. Way overpriced for the steel and materials. Their designs have choils that are too long, the guards are too big and get in the way, and the models that still use stick tangs are crap. It’s a < $200 knife being sold for 3x that or more.
Randall knives are junk. It’s the truth, it can’t be argued and that’s it. 54 HRC. Steels are 01 and 440B and in 2024 they are nearly $500 for a poor performing knife. Only brand I have had two warranty claims through.

I just got my custom Randal Filet Knife - well worth the 5 year wait! I have another model 1 I got from Ebay several years ago.
The double hilt knife you have looks like a model 16 “fighter” with a 7 inch blade.
The S on the knife stands for stainless. It is an option on most and standard on a few.
It tells you the model number and blade length on the back of the sheath.

You want a model 5, 6 inch stainless blade. Choose your handle. It is my favorite knife.
My favorite Randall is my 3-6. My favorite axes and hatchets are Gransfor Bruks.
I have a model 16 but Id like to trade it for a Randall Guardian or Gambler model. Great upload!
