KSP: How To Get to MINMUS for the first time (Science Mode)

  • By popular request, I'm redoing my tutorial series but won't be using any DLC, and will be limiting the amount of science I can get from planets/moons to ensure that we have to visit lots of destinations! In this episode, we launch our first 4 rockets, the final of which will be heading to Kerbin's mintiest satellite...

For those who want to do this at Career mode, a scientist with no levels has no SAS. To have an SAS, get a Probodobodyne OKTO, put it down the Mk1 capsule and hide inside it. This will give you a SAS module, and at the same time, you can use scientist kerbal.

Many Thanks to Lowne Aerospace... the inspiration and guidance is a perfect jumping into point for me, after stranding several Kerbins on Mun, and Minmus... I completely admire your philosophy of demonstrating what to do, and why, but not getting into the piece by piece by details, leaving some challenges, and plenty of room for imagination. after my first view of one of your videos, I was able to claim many overlooked science points, and used your inspiration for a new generation of spacecraft, and I was able to rescue Jeb and Valentina from the Mun. The downside is, I want to pause every video after about 30 seconds, and play KSP, and after about an hour of KSP, I want to watch another vid..... (smile, someone in Houston loves You!)

4:32 -> If you place the decoupler very close to the heat shield (with your mouse) it will join the parts without the decoupler shroud. It's kind of an ingame glitch but gives a nice uniform look to the craft. Just ignore that join green ball thingy and place the decoupler very close to the heat shield, you'll see that there's no empty space between the parts. And yes, it will work normally without problems.

am kinda curious as to why matt didnt put antennas on the ship.
edit: i did the mission myself and decided i’d get a cheeky mun encounter (and i didnt circularize at minmus first) on the way back and get some science from it too. I used the barometer, thermometer, mystery goo, crew report, eva report, surface sample, and science jr. and here’s where i got science from:
    All experiments high above kerbin
    All experiments high above minmus
    All experiments near minmus
All experiments in minmus greater flats
EVA report, surface sample in minmus lowlands
All experiments high above the mun
    All experiments near the mun
in the end i earned 1601.5 science from this one mission. I did this on console, not sure if pc is different. Also, by the end of the mission i had 39 experiments.

I really admire your no space junk philosophy... I had a science mode save, that started glitching really bad, and I thought it was because i had so many discarded boosters orbiting Kerbin and the Mun.... so i started again, only to discover, in the tracking station, there is a button to 'terminate' debris... you probably already knew, just throwing that out there, for those who read the comments.... ;)

May have initally gotten Bob stuck on Minmus with this setup. Then tried a two capsule setup, and foolishly jettisoned my half full second stage on the rescue mission only to run out of fuel a second time. (I swapped the science block for a second command module and added 4 more solid fuel boosters).
A quick reload later, I redid the Minmus rocket with 8 solid boosters and Bob did it fine.
Because I foolishly played with ComNet on, Bob couldn't create manuever nodes so my return to Kerbin was VERY accentuated and I used almost all my fuel (and a month in the Mk1 Capsule, poor Bob).
With your upcoming Duna mission in this playthrough, could you show how to align with the rotational/orbital path when you're disoriented? I mean, I have the 3 man capsule now so I can bring Jeb/Valentina as well, but for us newbies it'd be helpful to see I think.

I feel like this game is the ultimate "doesn't work that way for you" game. After copying his exact ship layout and following his exact launch instructions, I can't get the ship even into orbit. My launch also has much more wobble and difficulty controlling roll than his launch, but the main problem is that I just don't get the altitude. His altitude gain at 15:10 is way more than I am getting, so I don't even reach high enough to circularize and orbit. No idea why.

Matt, thanks for the videos you have posted so far. I have learned a lot about building rockets in KSP due to your tutorials. I've been thinking recently about your Lowne Aerospace 2 series and I'd like to request that if you do a third series, that it contain to the maximum extend possible, space probes. With this, you could have probe control points with pilots in them, but they can't be used to gather science themselves such as on landers, to plant flags, surface samples, etc. Those must be gathered by the probes when the tech tree supports that type of mission. Of course, I'd also suggest limiting yourself to one biome per planet/moon just as in the second series. I understand initially in the game that it is impossible to do probe only missions as the tech tree doesn't support such early missions. I thought it would force more creativity with communications networks while advancing the tech tree along in science mode. I appreciate your consideration! -Your fan, Bart!
