  • Here’s a quick tutorial showing you how to split a multitrack poly WAV file into separate tracks for easier editing or export in DaVinci Resolve Fairlight. Let’s see how it’s done!
    If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F6, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders. Perfect! Thanks. I always get 4 channels from my latest Panasonic MILC cameras, and wind up deleting 3 of the 4 tracks but I'm sure there will come a day when I want the separate files. Have a great Easter weekend and I'll try to make the livestream at noon your time.

    I don’t use this particular DAW, but there was some great general tips in the episode plus I always enjoy your videos. I watch them religiously when they drop on a Sunday evening (in the UK). Thanks Curtis.

    Since I am usually going to use a multitrack clip to create my edit, I like to take the stereo clip that my external recorder created, import it and make a duplicate. Then I change the clip attributes for these two clips to convert them to mono clips and select which embedded channel I want them to output. Then I select all my camera angles and these two audio clips and create a multitrack. Then when I am editing, I can switch angles for either audio or video or both. By the way, to make this work properly you have to select 'clip name' for the angle selection in multitrack. Otherwise the process will fail.

    Hi Judd, I’m currently deciding between the R-26 and the still-available Roland R-07 for some on-the-go Little Music recording work. Given your extensive experience I’d value your advice on choosing between the two.
    Thanks for your time and insights!

    Thanks for all you do Curtis. Out of curiosity is there any chance of doing another ‘top audio recorder’ video for 2024? I’m looking at recorders for an intermediate level setup for 1 person video as well as 2 person podcasting, and am wondering if the mix pre 3 ii is still the best option for quiet preamps and reliability or there are better options out there? (Or if it would be best to hold out for a bit in case they release a mark 3 soon) Keep up the good work!

      The MixPre is still the best option in my experience.

    Grt tx. Do you have a video on splitting multiple wave files within the same track? My Sony K3M adapter does this thing of saving 4 sound sources in one track. (Made more fun when they're in a multicam clip too!) I found some tricks but I suspect you may have more efficient ones!

      It seems Fairlight automatically puts them on separate tracks.

      Very serious. The A/V brain cells are protected by rubber netting that prevents information from getting in. The flip side is that I've never been afraid of a blank sheet of paper and have enjoyed a long career as a writer and editor.

    Is there a way to define a default behaviour that in case of a poly wav file just the first two tracks are imported to the timeline? Because I always have to delete manually track 3 and 4 from my cameras 4 track recorded audio which is anoying... Thanks and best.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  2 месяца назад

      Not that I know of…

    • @AnotherCameraChannel
      @AnotherCameraChannel 16 дней назад

      Not really a default behaviour fix for this scenario but here's something that could save you time:
      - Select your audio tracks in the Media Pool (you can do multiple at a time)
      - Right click and choose Clip Attributes
      - Under the Audio Tab you can just delete tracks you don't want (i.e 3+4) by clicking the Trash Can icon.
      - When you drag in the clip those tracks will now be gone :)
      I recommend to keep a safe version of the file in there, by Duplicating the clip before deleting the tracks you don't want.
      It doesn't affect the Original file, just how Resolve is interacting with that file.

      @@AnotherCameraChannel Thanks for the tip!

    Thanks, but here is the thing. When you record poly audio with timecode during a couple day (so you have more than 100 takes) and then give this source for editor who works in DaVinci resolve it might be tricky to do all this stuff for correct exporting AAF project. So anybody know how film editor working on DR should export AAF? Because its terrible when you receive just stereo files with erase metadata, instead 4-5 channels. Obviously film editor wouldn't split every single wave files for each channel per track

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 месяца назад

      That's a more advanced workflow we didn't cover here. But doesn't putting each channel on its own track help when it comes to exporting AAFs?

    • @Enjelss
      @Enjelss 3 месяца назад

      @@curtisjudd nope) Davinci Just owerwrite this poly file and making stereochannel without metadata, for example naming lavs from the set. So AAFs from the Davinci is a nightmare for sound on post)

      @@Enjelss Ok, interesting. I suppose Blackmagic Design's response might be something along the lines of, "Well, we integrated Fairlight into Resolve so you WOULDN'T NEED to round trip via AAF to another DAW..."

    I never worked in a davinci, but seriously, people need a tutorial on how to drag and drop and how to use right mouse click to figure things out?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 месяца назад +2

      In other DAWs, dragging and dropping into a timeline does NOT split the channels to separate tracks, so this should be helpful for those folks.

      @@curtisjudd DAWs tend to ask if you want to split the file when you’re uploading it into the project. Any way I don’t want to be over critical here. If it helps someone then it’s a good thing. Love your videos
