  • Hypertherm 85 - I had the feed rate turned back to get a better edge. AR plate is a different animal than mild steel...

    The powermax shows no mercy!

      AR plate is a tough cookie... I generally have to halve my cutting speeds to get a cut similar to mild steel....

    Sorry for bringing up this old thread but do you have a ballpark idea of how much more AR500 plate is than regular mild steel? I know steel prices right now are really high but in general is it 2x more, 3x more, 20% more?
    I'm in the military stationed overseas so i can't just stop by and ask a dealer. I am retiring after this assignment. I grew up on a farm and have always enjoyed tinkering. I have been designing a couple of tractor and skid steer attachments that i plan to build and a lot of companies use AR500 for the high stress areas of grapple buckets. Saw your video so i thought I'd ask.

      AR500 generally runs at least 2X the cost of A36 plate. It can be as high as 3X. The quick checking I just did comes out closer to 3X currently...

    Is this the hypertherm mini torch by chance?

    how fast are u running the feed rate with the 85? i have one of the new 65 sync's and having a hard time getting decent cuts

    • @joshuazimmerman8631
      @joshuazimmerman8631  2 года назад

      1/2" I typically run at 45 inches per minute. A 65 would be a bit slower than that.

      @@joshuazimmerman8631 my hypertherm book calls for 30ipm , but i'm not getting that. If i cut that fast, it doesn't cut completely thru at times. Could i also ask your kerf width your running? thanks

      My kerf on 1/2" is .084".
      If you are struggling with cutting the whole way through I would make sure that your ground is very good and your cut height is not too high. I like my cut height at .055"

      @@joshuazimmerman8631 thanks, my kerf is set the same, but i'll have to check the height.

    Curious.....have you tried cutting that material without the water bath?

    • @joshuazimmerman8631
      @joshuazimmerman8631  4 года назад

      No I haven't. I have had the water table from the very beginning. It makes it nice for the other people working in the shop; seriously cuts down on fumes and smoke.

    From watching a lot of these videos it looks like I'm going to have to get some sort of absorbent mat to catch all the water or clean up after each run lol

    • @joshuazimmerman8631
      @joshuazimmerman8631  5 лет назад +1

      I have a floor drain directly under my table which works quite well. However, you are correct, it will splash out while cutting. Running less water is not an option for me because I burned several holes through the bottom of my water table because the 85 amp has too much heat for such shallow water....

    What can you really make to earn a living or make any money with this toy CNC table??? Huh .. Come on now!! WTF!! Is the price of this toy really worth the money??? And how about the Plasma cutter... is it propitiatory to this CNC??? Or can you use any Plasma Cutter?? And what about the New Pro Version.... Do you have to use their Plasma cutter as well?? Because I seen a computer hook up on their plasma cutter for the controller???

    • @joshuazimmerman8631
      @joshuazimmerman8631  4 года назад

      The plasma cutter is not proprietary; it is a standard Hypertherm 85 with a machine torch. You can use plasma cutters from many different manufacturers.
      Whether you can earn a living or make money depends entirely on what parts you choose to make!
      Langmuir Systems makes an awesome entry level CNC table that puts precise cutting within the reach of normal people outside of an industrial environment. I use it for repair and maintenance items.
      And yes, because the CNC motion controller is a Windows program, you need a laptop or desktop somewhere in the vicinity of the table.
