I'm so glad you brought up the dude with the tail in alien and the jazz hands in aliens. Il admit I'm extremely late to the game as I couldn't handle gory movies still can't but now I can watch people like you talk me through things instead of watching it. However after seeing videos like this I realised the first one and the second one are OK in comparison to the gore in the later movies. It's easier to spot the special effects in the first movie which is wicked good for me as I can enjoy the movies without really getting grossed out but I can imagine if I'd have watched it as a teen like my friends did if of been terrified. Even with that being said those two moments were particularly ridiculous, the jazz hands I spotted straight away as alien in that moment looked like Louie Spence to me

This was entertaining as a creature feature for me.
But not as an entry in the Alien franchise.
Lots of good action & suspense scenes, great set designs & practical effects, and a few likeable characters & actors.
But the retconning/rewriting of what was revealed in Aliens (someone from the Weyland Yutani Corp. not believing Ripley's story) just kind of bothered me.
Too much nostalgia and callbacks had me rolling my eyes towards the end, too.
Overall it was just an above average to good film.

    About Romulus
I wouldn't mind the references to the past franchise in Romulus, but when you have the ' the unexpected main gal' strip down to her undies and take on the last Alien in a space suite...it's literally recreating the iconic last scene in Alien...and funny enough, Shaw in Prometheus!😂 Just a bit too much like the other films. Kinda wished it went in its own direction , but it's a tradition, I guess!😅

I always thought that the engineer homeworld that David and Shaw reach was the actual homeworld of that species. And that the engineer we see in Prometheus is to them the way the androids like David is to us. They are enhanced supersoldiers that they sent away for colonisation and other spacefaring missions. They are the best of the best of the engineers, and when David arrived and saw how primitive their origins looked, he was disappointed, like he was with humanity. So he exterminated them instead, playing God with their lives, and trying to play God again when he seeks to experiment with the xeno DNA and create life himself.

I think people should enjoy what they enjoy. A lot of people think I'm crazy for liking the movies that I do. But for myself, I feel like this movie is what we'll see when they start making more movies written by AI. It borrows so heavily from so many other movies and other media, not just the Alien franchise, that I can see where an AI could have created it. Especially when it's done line for line. It reminds me a lot of AI art I've seen. It's sometimes enjoyable

21:09-21:33 Writers, take note: this, ladies and gents, is what women are talking about when referring to representation in movies. Don’t make some big point out of your hero being a woman, like Captain Marvel, or purposely remaking movies to star women instead of men-that’s pandering and demeaning and can undercut the original movie’s message and themes. This is literally what we’re talking about-some everyday Jane Schmuck who turns out to be a hero not because she’s a woman, but because she’s a person who happened to win the lottery and had what it took to survive. She wasn’t right in her judgement because she, as a woman, was smarter than everyone else. She just happened to be a person who was right, and who got lucky.
This and Fargo are two of my favorite examples of female heroes done right. I’m really glad you summarized Ripley this way, Gil. Thank you.

Good review. But I actually enjoyed the fourth installation of the franchise. But I used to like the superhero and comic strip genre. Now I am fed up with Marvel and DC movies. Although I loved the first X-Men movies. Prometheus had all the necessary premises to be great, but if went in all the clichés that ruined the movie. They should have made the engineers team up with common danger or simply have the engineer all dead, keeping the mystery.

I will never understand the blind praise im hearing for Romulus. Everyone is praising Romulus for exact same issues that they constantly trash Prometheus and Covenant.
The characters are flat and forgettable. The writing for them is nonexistent most of the time. The acting is completely dispassionate... or talentless, however you want to look at it.
The fan service is completely inappropriate for a serious Alien film. Not even Resurrection stooped so low as to directly quote better, better movies in the franchise. As a fan, the "Get away from her you b****" line was completely insulting. How or why would they try to cheapen Ripleys glorious moment in Aliens??
This is how i rank the franchise:
    Aliens
    Alien
    Prometheus
    Alien Covenant
    Alien Resurrection
    AVP
    Alien Romulus
    Alien 3
    AVP: Requiem

BTW, Aliens is more timeless because it's more character driven than the original, especially the Special Edition. The Wizard of Oz could've been a wondrous 2001 acid trip of beauty in Oz. But no, it's more about Dorothy trying to get back to Kansas. In Star Wars, we follow Luke who loses his family to the evil Empire. In Gone With The Wind, we watch the most wonderful and challenging female character ever put on film as she takes us through a unique outlook of the Civil War. In T2, we follow the most unique family unit in the history of cinema as they try to save the future for John Connor and the rest of humanity.
In Aliens, Ripley is looking for second chances in this terrifying h**lscape. She goes on the mission to revisit LV426 as a way to reclaim her sanity and get a second chance at life. In Newt, she finds her second chance to be a mother and correct what she's done wrong with her actual daughter, Amy. By the end, we feel like Ripley has purged her PTSD and is now ready to live a new life with Newt... and maybe Hicks.
And that's why i loathe Alien 3 with a passion.

For starters, I watched your whole video from start to finish. I enjoyed you breaking everything up into parts and reviewing those said parts after completing each synopsis. Honestly, I appreciate and agree with most of your takes on the franchise. Alien and Aliens are both goated and masterpieces in their own right. Alien 3 and Resurrection were both dog water imho. Where I fully disagree with you is your take on Alien Romulus. This movie is more fan service than a solid addition to the franchise. I hated this movie. I wanted to like it but it just couldn't stick the landing, especially in that 3rd act. You and others giving it all the this praise confuses and frustrates me. There was nothing that felt original in it. I would put this movie up there with Alien Covenant. It tried but failed in the end. That all being said, I subscribed and look forward to to your next video.

It’s an interesting situation because I feel like both sides are confused by the other. I personally felt tense the entire movie because yes it’s an old formula with an old villain but thought it was executed well. So, it can’t even come close to competing with Alien and Aliens which not only had great execution but also originality, and a special “something” where you could feel a unique voice. Like you can feel James Cameron’s style in Aliens. I also have to admit after watching 3, resurrection, Prometheus, and covenant several times each before seeing this… maybe my bar was temporarily lowered 😆

@@OneTakeVidsThat's fair, Prometheus was the first movie I saw in the franchise which baffles a lot of people, but I grew up with parents who wouldn't let me watch rated R movies. When I eventually saw the first Alien I was filled with so much dread like when I watched John Carpenter's "The Thing" for the first time. I didn't know what to trust or how to process the situations the characters on screen were going through. I wish movies could capture that magic again.

I was thoroughly enjoying this video in your channel until you started to speak on Prometheus and covenant and then I understood that you are just another one of those “” OG fans that wants to see alien as nothing more than a scary monster movie, shrouded in some mystery if anything, Prometheus and covenant are the most interesting out of any of the movies they bring the story together they bring it meaning behind every single thing that happened but no because of some stupid dumb shit that you guys think is gonna ruin it because there’s no more mysteryyou guys think it’s shit but in reality you guys are just plummeting this series into the ground over and over and over again so I was here for a time but not a long time. I dont see any issue with her injecting the stuff in herself at all.
She thought she was going to die and decided if her would be rescuers were going to inject her with it, why not because it was probably better than her dying. She had exactly 0 knowledge of the events going on.
Overall I dont like the genetic engineering journey the franchise has taken. In my head and perceptions this was a species of life that had incredible evolutionary success with no origin backstory. The idea that essentially humans created what we know of today is disappointing. The Space Jockey race has long been fascinating and ended up the human origin story. No issue with that. I found it dissappointing that the one never sought to teach us what was going on but instead sought to destroy us but I guess that might be what could happen with interactions with an alien species. It would have been nice to understand WHY they took issue with our existence. So they meant to seed a planet but we were a step too far? Maybe they wanted a world more compelling then the one we saw in Covenant and that was supposed to be it? Was something going to happen that they couldnt stop and they needed a new home?
Either way having an android destroy them sucked and I would have loved to have learned more about their society. Their goals as a species since they do not have the travel constraints we do.
I think this movie was fine as a side story but as the future of how the alien species will he handled I dont like it much. That likely goes back to my perceptions of them though. Maybe I will become more fond of the movie in the future but its just eh for me. I feel the Aliens themselves were neutered in this movie. Typically speed is an attribute they have but they seemed to only stand there and casually jog towards the main protaganist instead of move in and kill them both as they should have been able to do. I guess the smart rifle has that ability in this movie but I dont recall that at ALL in the previous movies. Is the interpretation that it was developed later in response to Aliens? Do aliens behave differently without their queen?
A lot of the movies have never really invested in the limitations of aliens. The only time for example we see aliens show any fear of human firearms is when Ripley is in the queens chamber in Aliens and they clearly respond to her seemingly telepathic commands. Are they all mind linked? No clue. How do they cacoon like the one did in space? How did they track that one down?
Why didnt the android whose name I forgot simply take off in the ship to complete his primary directive? I have no doubt he could have quietly disappeared and just undocked and left. Or found some other convenient window to leave to complete his new mission.
That human beings would genetically experiment is not surprising at all but I would just like to see the franchise stop being about that specifically. I am not sure what else that would leave story telling wise but maybe thats why we have genetic experimentation instead.
The conveniently located gravity off button. Was it that section or the whole ship? Why would we put a feature like that there?
Also too often imo this franchise is only appearing to be capable of showing the Alien species on ships or corridors. Usually with a limited capacity of humans to respond or often not militarily capable. I guess the species does spend a lot of time ambushing and thats the easiest setting to use them in but something different would be nice. I think its all too late now with the last 3 movies.
I leave this feedback as someone who absolutely loves the Alien franchise. Rather what I know of it from 1 2 3 and Resurrected. The newer movies have taken it in a direction that is strange and interesting at the same time. I have 28 of the Alien novels.
Well that concludes this aimless rant. Thansk for the video.
