I'm not sure if I'm using the wrong tools or misunderstood a step. But all I managed to do was scratch the inside of the magazine well to the point I became concerned and stopped. I tried a small flathead screw driver, I tried a dental pick, each time it would just fly off and scratch something. I'll just bite the bullet and take it too an armorer....
You don't need to take out the rod. You can gently pry the rod up with a pair of pliers or something and the old mag release will just slide right out. You can then put the new one in, let go with the pliers, and then hook the rod backwhere it was before you started. Great informative video regardless, thanks!
Use a 90 degree pick to lift it like he is showing you, why do you people make a big deal out of it. Move it out it of position raise it and slide out the catch , slide the steel catch in raise the spring over it and slide the new one in and the push it back in place The man is showing you best and easiest way. It’s spring steel and will go back it’s in original shape when you release it, it’s done and done. Iv changed out 17 on the G43x and had no problems. If got to rough and lost of bent one they are less the 4 dollars at the Glock store. I’m placing a order from the for a titanium guide extra spring and rod and trigger parts for a oops kit
Thanks! Your video is the only one I've found that goes step by step explaining exhaustively. I figured out my screwdriver wasn't quite long enough so I purchased a new one and the install went swimmingly!
Scratched up the inside trying to do this for 30 minutes with a screwdriver, so i bought some picking tools and did this in a couple minutes 🤦♂️. Well gotta give props to your video though it was helpful and quick.
Headed to the hardware store in a bit to find a pick set. Been trying for 30 min with a screw driver and all I've managed to do is scratch up the inside of my gun.
Installed mine chewed up a little bit of plastic on the lip where the tension rod leans to getting it to come loose but it’s not bad and everything is installed and works perfectly used a pic tool 👌
The last couple Glock Armorer courses I went to suggested using needle nose pliers to just pull the mag catch spring (straight rod) straight up & out. After you use a small flathead to pop the rod out of the mag catch detent. This is way easier. To reinstall, hold mag catch in place, push rod down in its hole all the way, then use the flat tip driver to slide the rod back in place in the catch. No chewing up your gun. I can swap these in about 2mins with no damage & not over bending that rod.
Thank you - Ive done this several times but the glock 48 I have was almost impossible to remove. Pair of bent needle nose pliers and it came out in 5 seconds.
I have to admit, at first I was wary of doing this. Especially since now where I live the glock 43x is like a winning lottery ticket, the big box sporting goods and camping/hunting stores have the 43x on their website but no one has it in the store and it's up to 2-4 weeks for delivery. I had an offer by a woman for $850 if I'd sell her the 1 in my holster, I declined. I purchased the s15 combo pack which came with 3 s15 magazines and 1 +5 spring and base plate and upon reading the suggestions, they reccomended changing out the mag release with their metal 1, it's not a must but for better results and not wearing the plastic 1 out I did. I will field strip my guns but I'd rather not mess with the trigger and firing pin mechanisms, however I do have the harbor freight pick set and watching this video made it super simple and I didn't leave 1 scratch or chip getting the spring out of its seat, and putting it back was super easy and simple since getting the pressure off the spring is the most difficult part, if you're like me and dont want to knick it or scratch it up that's all I could think about. Thank you for the video that caters to us laymen who aren't very mechanically inclined or patient. Task took around 5 minutes after watching this and that's being super careful to not mess it up. Now my 43x has new mag release, 4 s15 magazines in total and 2 of them have the +5 extension, I carry in a vertical shoulder harness with 2 extra magazines totaling 56 rounds when I walk out the door. I will be getting 2 more +5 extensions since everything was so simple to install. Those who knock the 43x because other brands have similar sized compacts that hold 12, with shield arms innovations the 43x is capable of carrying a lot of backup power now with glock reliability and peace of mind that comes with them. I have the 43 also and several other compacts but the 43x with these upgrades and efficiency of possible modifications is my go to carry now. Great products from both glock and shield arms, in which I have no affiliation other than just being a satisfied customer.
How have the mags been holding up for you? I’ve been having issues with the magazines + Glock mag release, but I just ordered a steel version from shield. Excited to try it out!
I feel bad for all the people that are following the second step and taking out the rod. It's not necessary to do that, just take the flat head and bend it outwards while putting in the new release..
I've got an even easier tool... One of those 6in1 screw drivers... take out the small sized screw end and use the tube of the holder to slide over rod spring and push/pull out of the way of the catch.
I can't understand why but it simply doesn't work for me on my 43x. I've got the nice thick pick set and don't have any problems with the same task on my g19. no matter how hard I twist and pull on my 43x it will not budge. I'm marring the hell out of the inside of my frame. This really sucks
Great video! I know it's hard to show the groove though where the spring rod is supposed to go so that was a bit hard to see. But, once I field strip my pistol, I'm sure I can figure it out. Thank you!
Like others have said, go to Harbor Freight and get their $2 mini pick set, and push the release from the back side as your are prying the pin. Make sure to press the hook on the end of the pick under the pin and it should pop out. Also, you can leave the pin in and just slide the new release in while prying the pin up. Super easy to push the pin back in place once it’s in.
Great Video, i followed step by step by step and I was able to actually do the opposite of what you are doing here. My shield arms mag and release aren’t properly feeding and causing a FTF or jam between rounds. I have switched back to the factory mag release and magazine until I get the issue resolved. Great video and thanks again!!
I had the same issue with the Shield mag catch and magazine, so I swapped back to the original as well. Just gonna run mine OEM and settle for 11 rounds.
After looking for installation vids, I came across lots of reputable vids that warn about and demonstrate FTF issues, especially with hollow point/defense ammo. This occurs with Gen1, 2, and 3 mags. It is not the mag release causing this. Shield has told people it is the loose tolerances of their particular gun. I'm returning the S15 set-up without installing it. Better to have an 11 shot that works 100%.
I just got mine today’s and tried to put it in with the polymer mag release and the s15 mag just falls off , I’m confused, I have not shot it , just wanted to put it in

Hey yes the tension rod is supposed to be pretty tight in there so it doesn’t come out easily/accidentally. Get a small pick set from harbor freight (it’s a 4 pack with orange handles for about $2) makes it much easier to get behind the rod to pop it out.
I tried to install the shield mag extensions on a glock Pmag and it wouldn’t work. Am I on the wrong here or are shield mag extensions only compatible with original glock mag ?
I could be wrong but , I pretty sure the Shield mag extension only work on the shield s15 mags. At least I’ve only ever seen there +5 extensions on the s15 mags.

Absolutely, I thought they would just clean it up and replace knife blade probably. or at most replace with a tinker or similar. but they went well above and beyond. Fantastic service above and beyond what they needed to do.
Hahaha yeah I have done multiple of these so it is very quick to "just do" but if someone is having trouble and looking for a little help I think its better for them to be able to see it step by step as much as possible. Thanks

Good Job... thanks for sharing - New Subscriber: The Glock OEM mag release will work with the S15 mags but, metal mags working against a plastic mag release will 'eventually' cause the the plastic mag release to fail. It just makes sense to dump the plastic for metal with your first order of S15 mags and never have to think about it again (IMHO). All my mags will be S15's from here on out and the two OEM mags being held back for "SHTF, Alamo Last Stand Do Or Die" duty anyway. - I run and EDC a (black) Glock 48 as well.
Yes it will eventually as it is metal on plastic, but the glock mags are pretty tough so will take some time. I will still use mine for range/backup just not for daily carry.
Yeah I have been trying to pull that pin out of there for about an hour now. Now the inside of my brand-new Glock is all scratched up and I still can’t get it out of there.
I think this was the hardest thing that I ever had to do on a Glock. Close second was removing the baseplate off the mags without the Glock Tool... Triggers, Slides, EZPZ! Mag Catch and Mag Plates? Not so much...
Yes they are very snug especially at first. Use the factory Glock magazine loader, I’ve found it works well. I think I used the one that came with my G19.
I just bought a brand new 43X 5 days ago. I got the shield arms mag catching today. I cannot for the life of me get the old one out no matter what I do. The one I have in my gun doesn't look anything like the one in this video or any other video. It is the most frustrating thing I have seen with guns here lately.
That’s weird. I don’t have a 43x so I can’t help ya there, not sure if the stock 43x one looks different than the stock 48 or not. But the shield arms mag release is for both.
True but if you don’t change it then you can’t use the S15 mags as it will damage the factory mag release. I plan on just using the s15 mags now as they have 15 rd capacity instead. But will have the 10 rd factory mags around as backups.
Yeah the metal magazine on the factory plastic mag release will work if you are not doing a lot of shooting with it you are correct. If you do a lot of shooting however the mag rocking back and forth slightly and changing mags by engaging/disengaging the mag release will wear out the plastic. Some people I’m sure won’t change it and that’s fine, but since it is my carry I don’t want to leave it to chance when the malfunction will happen. 🤷🏻♂️
Dude you don't have to pull the spring out to change the mag release. Once you remove it from the mag catch groove it slides right out. Get a clue before you mislead people
Haha nope it worked just fine. I have done several of these and they have all worked just fine. But do get a small pick set as it is easier than the screwdriver, but both do the job.
haha yeah sorry, for some time now I have taken peoples advice and begun turning the music level down and my speaking volume up. Some of these older videos still were a learning curve for that kind of stuff for me. thanks.
They work well for me as I have had zero problems with the 4 that I have. But my 4 is a small sample of the large number they produce. Also something to think about is the difference between each gun/maintenance/ammo used/moving parts of pistol and other factors that can affect the magazine. But it has to be dependable consistently for you to trust it. Thanks for watching.
@@HammerIIHammer Thank you for the content. Mine-both Gen1 & 2 fall out of my gun when I shoot. I use their mag catch too. Maybe they are delivering faulty mag catches and not mags... who knows. I went back to my 10 rounder's though. It is my carry.
What a pain in the ass this was. Took me straight up 20 minutes or more with a dental pick and sweat blood etc. finally got it out then putting the thing back in place took 4 seconds. Getting that little bitch out from under the factory mag catch is awful though.
Yeah cheap $2.99 pick set from harbor freight makes it easier for sure. I’ve done several with the screwdriver but prefer using the pick as it’s easier to hook under the rod with pressure.
I'm not sure if I'm using the wrong tools or misunderstood a step. But all I managed to do was scratch the inside of the magazine well to the point I became concerned and stopped. Yeah I have been trying to pull that pin out of there for about an hour now. Now the inside of my brand-new Glock is all scratched up and I still can’t get it out of there.
Don't pull the pin out. This video is stupid. It's not necessary, just follow the first step and then put the new mag release in.
@@PandasWeightloss is right that's what I did works perfect... you don't need to take the rod out!
Tha spring sucks. I scratch the side of the plastic when lift out
I think this was the hardest thing that I ever had to do on a Glock. Close second was removing the baseplate off the mags without the Glock Tool... Triggers, Slides, EZPZ! Mag Catch and Mag Plates? Not so much...
How the hell do you get the slide off so easy
Lol practice. :-)
Thanks!
Hey thank you, never new about the “supers”. 👍
Thank you kindly for this video
Your welcome! Thanks for watching
Just got the mags and getting 15 rounds in it is a little tough. Anyone else experience this?
Yes they are very snug especially at first. Use the factory Glock magazine loader, I’ve found it works well. I think I used the one that came with my G19.
@@HammerIIHammer thanks.
Get a uplula mag loader, only one you'll ever need, Glock mag loaders are bunk. Uplula can load any mag from 9mm through .45acp
@@seahawks1185 tight. Thanks
The mag isn’t bigger because of the material num nuts, it’s single stack vs double stack
@@HammerIIHammer How have the S15 mags been working for ya? Do you have Gen 1 or 2? Thanks. Have been hearing mixed reviews.
No need to remove that pin out to remove or install the mag catch
What ?
Just leave it the pin, move out the old release and put in the new one!!!!
Who makes that holster?
Crossbreed mini tuck
If you change the mag rls then u cant use factory mags anymore...
True but if you don’t change it then you can’t use the S15 mags as it will damage the factory mag release. I plan on just using the s15 mags now as they have 15 rd capacity instead. But will have the 10 rd factory mags around as backups.
Do you have proof of your theory that the mag rls will not work or get damaged?? Because its Not true. Your original mag rls will Work Just Fine
@@HammerIIHammer how many mags you run thru it so far?
Not sure a bunch tho, I shoot a lot.
Can deconstruct most guns, that s mag release is pissing me off, though I don't have the correct tools now.
I tried with a small flathead and gave up. Pick up a hook and pick set from Walmart or harbor freight for $2-5 and you can get it in 30 seconds.
you never inserted the new nag to prove that it worked or demonstrated how the stock mags behave with the new mag release...
It works. Stock mags work the exact same as the new.
Well done
Thank you
You don't need to take out the tension rod!!
I CANNOT get this damn spring out
Am I the only one having an issue with my standard mags getting stuck??
No issues here with mine, but I mainly use the s15 mags now. I keep the factory's for spares when traveling mainly etc.
Dude you don't have to pull the spring out to change the mag release. Once you remove it from the mag catch groove it slides right out. Get a clue before you mislead people
Lol get a clue…….you sound like a 12 year old girl!! 😂🤣😂😆.
Took me about an hour. Watched multiple videos & now the inside all scratched up lololol
Oh nooo. Lol good thing glocks are tools. :). A small dental pick works really well tho, can get a cheap set from harbor freight.
All that work and you don’t insert the mag to see if it works.
lmao, probably did not work and he cut that off
Haha nope it worked just fine. I have done several of these and they have all worked just fine. But do get a small pick set as it is easier than the screwdriver, but both do the job.
So easy. 2 minutes, no scratch and not a gunsmith. Idk.
Good, glad it went well!
👍🏾
Man I’m just scratching up this poor gun
it should not be difficult to do/take much pressure, if you begin scratching it/damaging, have a armorer/gunsmith look at it.
Thanks for the video, but that intro music is the worst noise ive ever heard.🤮
haha yeah sorry, for some time now I have taken peoples advice and begun turning the music level down and my speaking volume up. Some of these older videos still were a learning curve for that kind of stuff for me. thanks.
Your Intro Is WAY To Loud
Shield Arms has serious quality control issues and are not dependable!
Getting that little bitch out from under the factory mag catch is awful though.
not a fucking way my gun can be done with this shit screwdriver, been doing an hour, it's fkn stuck and has so much pressure to it
Yeah cheap $2.99 pick set from harbor freight makes it easier for sure. I’ve done several with the screwdriver but prefer using the pick as it’s easier to hook under the rod with pressure.
@@HammerIIHammer Thanks, but I do not live in US and A. :D I managed to finally do it with screwdriver but it was a painful process. xd
pain in the ass to get it out wth
Sorry,crappy video
If I did not know how to do it.
I would not be clear from your attempt
Not sure how much more clear the video can be but thanks anyway :-)
Ie
OMG 10 minutes for a 2 minute procedure
What an amateur, it’s not necessary to pull the rod out.
