Cut-Rate Commander - Quick Precon Upgrade Guide for the Universes Beyond Warhammer 40K The Ruinous Powers Precon & its face Commander - Abaddon the Despoiler
#mtg #MTGxWH40k #commander #warhammer40k #edh
The Forces of Chaos have emerged from the Eye of Terror in the Universes Beyond Warhammer 40k The Ruinous Powers precon - with Abaddon the Despoiler leading his 13th Black Crusade deep into Imperial space to reduce it (along with our opponents life totals) to cinders.
In this quick precon upgrade, we’ll be aiming to wrangle the core build (which is a bit all over the place right out of box, which is fitting for a deck featuring the forces of Chaos) into a AOE Burn and damage direction - giving Abaddon plenty of damage to fuel his ability to cascade our spells. Of course that means we’ll be adding in lots of passive and repeatable table wide burn/drain effects so we can proc Abaddon reliable at no mana cost, as well as a decent number of payoffs for us dealing damage and cascading our spells to generate us value - allowing Abaddon to reduce our opponents life totals to cinders under his relentless cascade of spells.
Let me know if the comments below if you agree with my choices and/or what you would add to the deck instead. Also, let me know know who you would like to see next by voting on in the comments on the three choices of commander listed at the end of the video.

I just god done with upgrading my sauron deck with the help of your video. I have been struggling much with my abaddon deck ever since it was released having tried the demon tribal way, the planeswalker focussed way which both didnt turn out as i had hoped. So Im very excited to have found this channel and learn that you have done this Series back in for the warhammer 40k decks as well. Looking super forward to trying my newly creates Sauron build as well as turning my abaddon deck into this build and trying that as well. Thanks!
I like the way you make your videos! You actually suggest which cards to cut on top of which ones you add. I highly appreciate that as someone who's just getting into commander. Keep it up and may the lords of chaos bless our cascades!
Glad you like them and happy to hear that the vids have been helping out folks who are just getting into the format!
Great guide as always! Really looking forward to your Forces of Imperium guide. Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed the build and Forces of the Imperium is coming next week, so hang tight!
Bought this as my first foray into irl magic and have been waiting patiently for this installment 😄
Hope you enjoyed the build and hope you have fun with the deck!
Eagerly anticipating the Necron upgrade guide.
Hopefully it will be dropping next week, so hang tight!
Would not change anything in these decks because of flavour but fun to see ur budget upgrades
Fair - I honestly love these build out of the box for the flavor alone, so I understand completely!
At minimum, I would add a few better rocks. Otherwise, totally.
Unfortunately in this deck the flavor completely tramples the quality of the deck. The deck is just two halves smashed together: on one side you have a barely decent demon tribal and on the other a heavy cascade focused deck. In between you have all other small sub engines like Khorne-goad and Nurgle pestilence and revive. Chaotic doesn't mean "a janky mess of cards".
oof this makes me want to turn my Mogis Group slug deck into this, that deck has been keeping me and other entertained for years now tho, great vid, glad you are going through the Warhammer commanders.
Glad you enjoyed it! And hey, if anything there are some cards in here that would also go great in Mogis if you find yourself wanting to update your build!
2 weeks of ramen does sound better than 2 months. Enjoying the new series
Glad to hear it!
7:11 interesting so theyre really counted as 0 cmc? Good to know
Hey, are these upgrades still viable or would you switch some up?
Im also looking to upgrade ''the lost and the dahmned'' enchanted, i have used this 10+ times and never got any value out of it, any tips?
Thanks!
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE! CASH FOR THE STAPLES! TICKETS FOR THE FRONT ROW!
Was that chaotic enough? I think it was. Amazing video as always!
Also hey, Necrons are next! Gotta love them Egyptian Zombie Terminators from Space.
Day 420 (Ayyyyyy) of waiting for the Grazzet MTG face reveal. Do you have a favourite primarch? For me, it would probably be Mortarion, since his backstory is quite the tale, especially once you realise he was technically huffing copium right before Jaghatai Khan roasted him to high heaven.
Glad you enjoyed the content and thanks for the support as always!
As far as my favorite primarch goes, I think it would have to Magnus the Red - The Emperor did him dirty when all he was trying to do was warn him of Horus's treachery and was even willing to sacrifice himself and his legion instead of being a pawn to Chaos - but now he's a badass Daemon Primarch and has (in my opinion) the coolest Chaos Models on the Tabletop, so swings and roundabouts I guess!
I would really like Etherium-Horn Sorcerer in this deck just to have a repeatable 6 drop to cast each turn
Its certainly not a bad addition, but the curve was already high as (and I personally could not find a good card to cut for it) in this build. But if you want to add it in for your own build, by all means do so!
Abaddon, probably: "What happened to my deamon army??? Where in Tzeentch's name did all these weirdo's come from?!"
To be fair, probably not the weirdest things that's happened to him in the warp!
@@GrazzetMTG Fair, especially since Kaldor Drago is constantly flying around.
Varragoth is notably cheaper money wise than the last two upgrades whilst doing the same job as being decently reliable source of damage due to deathtouch and a decent source of removal due to…well, deathtouch
And a tutor to cascade into what you actually need!
Great suggestion! He certainly is a great budget way to set up our topdeck - though lets be real, he's probably going to get to do that once since, deathtouch or not, no opponent is going to let us stack out topdeck turn after turn in a cascade focused build,
Any chance could you do something similar to this with the secondary commanders? Like in this instance Belakor, I have this deck but I’m tryna make it demon tribal.
I may do a poll for the Alternate Commanders for either a shorter form build like this or a full episode - no promises since The Brothers War is almost here but its an idea I've been mulling around.
@@GrazzetMTG I’ll take what hope I can get, I only do tribal decks due to ✨ flavor ✨ so any and all tribal deck related stuff pleases me greatly. Keep up the good work!
Can you do a demon build instead??
Would Sunbirds Invocation and Vial Smasher work well in this deck?
Also i truly love your deck techs. They make for fun and entertaining videos.
Sunbird's Invocation would make a find addition with is psuedo-cascade to let us cast even more free spells alongside Abaddon and Vial Smasher the Fierce would be a solid include as well to tack on some additional build as well, but may may suffer a but since we want to burn our opponents before we cast our spells to get them cascade.
Good suggestions and happy to hear you're enjoying the content!
I thought about making a Tetsuo deck, then I see Abaddon. I wonder if it's doable with a Abaddon-voltron build.
I think it would be but the build would likely need to be done from the ground up rather than a precon upgrade. On the upside, at least Abaddon would be able to wield his sword in that version of the build!
I wish people that made these kinds of videos would just follow a format that put the cards to be cut in a separate section. A format like "Intro, strategy, Cards Cut, Cards Added, and finally Higher Value Upgrades". This would make the videos much more watchable.
nice list, however I noticed that abaddon is not very protected, and considering that it is the engine of the deck it is a shame, also because we have few cards that use the "cascade" mechanic
Fair, adding in a few more cheap means to protect Abaddon so we can cascade into them, would certainly make the deck more resilient - consider just how dependent the build is on him. Soul Channeling, Skeletal Grimace & Ring of Xathrid are good budget sources of additional regeneration, and Mask of Avacyn and Whispersilk Cloak provide solid targeted removal protection, as do Lightning Greaves if we want to up the budget.
why didn't you enter aurora phoenix? it seems like a great card for this list
Honestly, mainly due to the curve already being high and already having swapped 32 cards in the build (there was only so much I could fit in $35 worth of upgrades) - but it would certainly make a find addition if you want to swap out one the high cmc demons left in the core build for it.
Were you planning on doing all four?
Yep, all 4 are going to be covered in October - Necron's on 10/22 and Forces of the Imperium on 10/26 (and Tyranids is already out).
haha, I just saw the temur video

You took out Drach'Nyen!? But... but ... the flavor!? Of all the cards!?
Enjoyed the video. Thx Graz.
Magnus deck in the future? Pls?
Trust me, it hurt me too that apparently Drach'Nyen was better suited for a certain Dominarian Samurai than its actual wielder.... Glad you enjoyed the build though, despite the lore foul!
I'll see what I can do about Magnus and some of the other commander in the build (can't make any promises since The Brothers War is almost upon us though).
This deck is hard to make cuts for because I want to keep the cool 40k cards but also make the deck more powerful overall. Gotta kill your babies with upgrading this one :(
I feel you. The Warhammer 40k decks are all a love letter to the hobby and it honestly makes me feel bad taking them apart to make improvements.
Still, if you want a better chance actually winning games, we'll need to make some sacrifices. But if your all about flavor, then leaving them as is the way to go!
HOLYFUCK
IT IS LITERALLY TAKING MOST CARDS ... AND REPLACING THEM WITH OTHER CARDS
... it is building a new deck dude
wtf
That is a fair point but to counter, while Abaddon is probably the most powerful face commander in this set of precons, his deck is by far the most disjointed and unfocused of them as well - with hardly any cards being able to take advantage of his ability apart from turning sideways and too may of them wanting to do their own thing. So while replacing 32 cards of the deck is a lot - I still believe this is necessary to allow Abaddon to rise to his full potential as a commander.
basicly remove the 40k deck keep only a few Warhammer creatures and remove everyone else wel thats demoralizing
Trust me, I feel the same! Each of these is a love letter to 40k fans (me being one of them) and I honestly would not fault anyone for just running it as is for the flavor alone. That said, this build in particular has so much going on (which while thematic for Chaos is a bit too unfocused to make full use of in game) that we'll sadly we'll have to make some significant sacrifices if we want to improve it. Hopefully The Ruinous Powers will understand!
